Jane Goodall’s Cause Of Death Revealed

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Dr. Jane Goodall, the pioneering primatologist, chimpanzee researcher and animal-welfare advocate, died of cardiac arrest, TMZ reports, citing her death certificate from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Goodall’s death was announced Oct. 1 by The Jane Goodall Institute, which revealed Goodall passed away of natural causes while on a speaking tour in California. She was 91.

Born on April 3, 1934, in London, Goodall would later say that a toy chimpanzee she received as a child was the start of her fascination and love for the animal, a toy she kept throughout her life. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden early this year after being a presence on television for decades.

She was the subject of Jane, a 2017 feature-length documentary that was nominated for seven primetime Emmys and won two, for Brett Morgen’s directing and for cinematography. It also won a PGA Award and was named Best Documentary by the National Board of Review, among many other accolades.

Goodall was 26 in 1960 when she traveled from native England to what is now Tanzania and ventured into the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. It was the start of more than 60 years of groundbreaking work in a male-dominated field. She emphasized the need to protect chimps from extinction while redefining species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment.

Later she became a familiar face on intercontinental television. Her hundreds of TV appearances over the decades began with guesting on The David Frost Show in 1970. Three years later, she was featured in the TV documentary special Jane Goodall and the World of Animal Behavior: The Wild Dogs of Africa. Other specials would include Jane Goodall: A Life in the Wild (1990) and Jane Goodall: My Life with the Chimpanzees (1995). Just between 2004 and 2005, she appeared in three TV specials: Jane Goodall’s State of the Great Ape, Jane Goodall’s Return To Gombe and Jane Goodall: When Animals Talk.

More recently, she teamed with Leonardo DiCaprio on Howl, a live-action film about a dog and wolf’s survival journey told from the animals’ perspective.

Sam Keeley Breaks Down Jayson v. Robbie and the Ending

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

[This story contains major spoilers from Task’s series finale.]

Even Sam Keeley is surprised that his Task character lasted as long as he did.

The Irish actor’s villainous role of Jayson Wilkes — the President of the Dark Hearts’ Delaware County motorcycle club chapter — has felt the walls closing in on him all season. Robbie Prendergast (Tom Pelphrey) and Cliff Broward (Raúl Castillo) have recently been undermining his outfit’s fentanyl trade at every turn. Consequently, Perry Durazo (Jamie McShane), the father figure who took Jayson in as a troubled teenager and championed his rise to power, is being pressured by the Dark Hearts’ governing body, the Mother Club, to eliminate Jayson.

Perry then scrambles to protect his surrogate son, but in doing so, he discovers that Jayson killed Robbie’s brother, Billy, over his affair with Eryn (Margarita Levieva), Jayson’s romantic partner and mother of his two children. Perry subsequently confirms that Eryn has been aiding Robbie and Cliff’s revenge plot to destabilize Jayson’s reign in the Dark Hearts. Along the way, Jayson sets a trap to catch and ultimately kill Cliff, adding further fuel to Robbie’s quest for vengeance.

The concluding episodes of creator Brad Ingelsby’s follow-up to his HBO smash hit, Mare of Easttown, essentially became a duel between Jayson and Robbie over the remaining stolen fentanyl and any ill-gotten gains it yields. Robbie wants to sell the product to provide a better future for his two motherless children, while Jayson wants it for himself so he can buy back good standing with the Mother Club and hopefully stay alive to raise his own two motherless children.

The Salli Richardson Whitfield-directed sixth episode is when the blood feud came to a head, and despite everyone that Jayson had already taken from Robbie, he still emerged victorious in a fatal showdown.

“I had no idea that was coming, and I had no idea [Jayson] would be responsible for even more pain in Robbie’s life and death. So it was a surprise to me as well,” Keeley tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Jayson may have twisted a knife into Robbie’s gut, but Robbie still managed to gain the upper hand by having Jayson and co. chase after a duffel bag of newspapers, not fentanyl. Prior to his death, Robbie sold the Dark Hearts’ fentanyl for a handsome sum that his niece, Maeve (Emilia Jones), could use to raise his kids far away from Delaware County. In the Jeremiah Zagar-helmed finale, Jayson still made a last-ditch effort to recover the funds at Maeve’s home, but Grasso (Fabien Frankel), the dirty FBI task force member who’d been Jayson’s informant all along, finally put him down.

“At that point, you’re seeing a very desperate man. Retrieving that money was a way to provide for his family and avenge his own honor and stay good with the club,” Keeley says. “Robbie won the war, and he checkmated everybody.”

Before his own demise, Jayson also ended the life of his surrogate father, Perry. He received a phone call that Eryn’s dead body was found in Bangor Quarry with Perry’s signature chain wrapped around her hand. In episode five, Perry confronted Eryn over the chaos she’s created for the Dark Hearts, and when she took off running and screamed for help, he strangled her into silence.

So the question that remains is whether Jayson would’ve also condemned Eryn to death for her second betrayal that effectively made him a marked man in the eyes of the Mother Club.

“To be honest, I hadn’t gone there in my head, in terms of what would’ve happened if Jayson had to deal with Eryn himself. He’d probably do it, wouldn’t he?” Keeley asks. “[Perry] took away Jayson’s choice for either outcome, but he also took away an essential part of his family unit. So Perry fell into Jayson’s crosshairs in a way that Jayson justified to himself as, ‘You live by the sword, you die by the sword. You’ve taken this from me, and it’s a life for a life.’”

Below, during a recent spoiler conversation with THR, Keeley also discusses the resources he relied on in order to create the character of Jayson.

The assumption throughout the season is that Robbie Prendergast (Tom Pelphrey) would avenge his brother Billy and eventually his best friend Cliff by killing Jayson. But he, too, lost his life to Jayson. Before you received the sixth script, did you also assume that Robbie would inevitably take Jayson’s life?

I got three scripts to begin with during the whole auditioning process, and by the end of episode three, I was unsure as to what the future held in store for Jayson. But by the end of episode four, once we got into shooting it, I saw that horrific ending [with Cliff] up close in the warehouse. That’s when I thought, “There’s no way people can let this guy live. He seems to be the center of pain for everybody, certainly for Robbie, but also for Maeve.”

He’s in this really weird spot. He is a family man who loves the people around him, but because he goes to great and very violent lengths to protect that circle, a lot of people suffer as a result. In terms of the big showdown in episode six, I had no idea that was coming, and I had no idea he would be responsible for even more pain in Robbie’s life and death. So it was a surprise to me as well.

It’s one of those scenarios where Jayson won the battle against Robbie, but Robbie won the war against Jayson.

Absolutely. Robbie knew what he was doing when he went into the woods with the bag of what we thought was fentanyl. It turned out to be newspaper clippings of his dream scenario in Canada. I’d be curious to speak to Tom about it now, as well as Brian Davids Brad [Ingelsby] and directors Salli [Richardson-Whitfield] and Jeremiah [Zagar]. But I wonder if Robbie was resigned to losing life. I don’t think he necessarily anticipated that the FBI were going to be there, but he certainly anticipated that the Dark Hearts were going to be there. And it’s quite poetic and beautiful that he would give up his life for the greater good. So, in that sense, I totally agree with you. Robbie won the war, and he checkmated everybody.

Sam Keeley’s Jayson and Jamie McShane’s Perry in Task.

Peter Kramer/HBO

In the finale, Jayson kills his Dark Hearts mentor and father figure, Perry (Jamie McShane). It was in response to Perry killing his girlfriend Eryn over her latest betrayal. Does this imply that Jayson would not have killed Eryn himself for her helping Robbie and Cliff? Or did he kill Perry for taking either choice away from him?

That’s a really good question. With regards to Eryn’s fate in Jayson’s hands, oof. He’s a dark character. He’s got this incredible ability to cause destruction through his rage. But to be honest, I hadn’t gone there in my head, in terms of what would’ve happened if Jayson had to deal with Eryn himself. He’d probably do it, wouldn’t he?

I didn’t want him to be a cookie-cutter evil guy. I wanted him to have a code of honor. And when that honor is besmirched or betrayed by even the people who are closest to him — like Eryn’s lover, Billy — it’s met with destruction and revenge of the most brutal kind. So, yeah, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that she could have lost her life either way. As to how that would’ve gone down, only Brad can enlighten us there.

But in terms of killing Perry, that blade cut in a very specific way. As you so eloquently put it, he took away Jayson’s choice for either outcome, but he also took away an essential part of his family unit. She’s [basically] his bride. And in this tiered code of honor that he has, that goes beyond everything for him. So Perry fell into Jayson’s crosshairs in a way that Jayson justified to himself as, “You live by the sword, you die by the sword. You’ve taken this from me, and it’s a life for a life.”

And as we saw at the end of episode four with Cliff, he doesn’t always think through his actions. A lot of the times his rage can take over, and we’ve seen that happen to him time and time again in the show.

Sam Keeley’s Jayson and Margarita Levieva’e Eryn in Task.

Peter Kramer/HBO

Jayson still stayed with her after he killed her lover, Billy. So I did wonder if he gets some sort of twisted satisfaction by punishing everyone except her. But Eryn being the mother of his two kids is certainly justification for why he might continually spare her.

Yeah, absolutely. There’s a sense of denial coming from him as well. He’s willing to swallow a lot and let a lot of things slide in order to keep his family unit intact and protect the things that he loves. But to essentially hold this woman who you claim to love hostage — in her own home and against her will, and kill her lover — it doesn’t get much darker than that.

Even up till the end when Grasso (Fabien Frankel) shoots him, Jayson was still dead set on recovering the drug money. Did he figure it was his best and only chance to re-ingratiate himself to the Mother Club and potentially stay alive for his kids?

Yeah, at that point, you’re seeing a very desperate man. You’re seeing him at the end of his tether. There’s the financial benefit, but I think you’re right in the sense that this would be a way for him to stay within the Dark Hearts and keep his identity and to continue on with his vision and his goal. In my mind, his secret goal was always to move up the ranks and be part of the Mother Club eventually.

It’s also the principle. He’s a man of principles. He’s somebody who doesn’t like to be betrayed. And as we’ve seen and heard, when someone makes a public show of him in a very negative way, he doesn’t respond very well. His reputation and his identity are everything, and that is through the club. Without the club, he’s just a guy. He’d have to go get a regular job and partake in the world just like the rest of us. And I don’t know if he fits into that mold.

A character like Jayson belongs in a different time. He doesn’t really fit in with the rules of modern society, and the club allows him a way to act on his basic needs and instincts. So retrieving that money was a way to stay in that and provide for his family and avenge his own honor and stay good with the club.

Sam Keeley’s Jayson in Task.

Peter Kramer/HBO

This industry is smaller than people think, and there’s often a belief that actors from the same small country all know each other. So did you and Alison Oliver ever cross paths before this in Ireland?

No, I met her on Task, but we have a lot of mutual friends in common. As you’ve just mentioned, the industries are small, but the Irish industry is particularly small. There’s not that many of us, and certainly, for those of us who are doing international work like most of us are now, we’ve met at some stage or another.

But myself and Alison had never actually crossed paths until we both got to Philadelphia, which was lovely. I was delighted when I saw her cast because she’s so unbelievably talented, and she’s so great in the show. So it was just nice having another Irish person around to vibe off of and enjoy the moment of being on this incredible job together.

Did you vent to each other about the transition from Irish to the Delco accent?

She loved it! She was amazing at it as well. She took to it like a duck to water. But I found it tricky; I’m not going to lie. It was a hard accent for me to nail, because I didn’t have any context for the accent. I had been working on it for three months prior with Susanne Sulby, our dialect coach, and she had helped Kate Winslet out on Mare of Easttown, Brad’s previous show. So I knew I was in good hands, and those three months were great. I also had incredible references and recordings of people from Philly.

But it didn’t fully click for me until I got my boots on the ground. I went out and talked to people. I hung out in bars and restaurants, and I would chat to people to get the cadence of the action and the rhythm of the city. So that’s when it finally made sense for me, and it worked out great. But leading up to that, I was like, “I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this.” (Laughs.)

Jayson is responsible for Lizzie’s (Oliver) death as well, but even if he slammed the brakes or swerved, there wasn’t enough reaction time to change her fate, was there?

No, absolutely not, especially in a vehicle of that size and at that speed. The timing of that is so brutal and so awful to watch. It’s just as she steps out, and she is in a total blind spot [on top of being temporarily deafened]. So even if Jayson had the best intentions in the world to not add more bodies to his count, I don’t think there was a whole lot he could have done in that situation.

I read a piece about director Jeremiah Zagar’s childhood friend, Carim Mow, who spent time in a biker gang and consulted on the show. Did you lean on that guy quite a bit?

Absolutely. In the buildup before we got to Philly, I had several conversations with Carim about the life. It was a combination of Carim and several books that I ended up reading. I read two books by Sonny Barger, who was a notorious president of The Hell’s Angels. I also read two books by Junior Ereckson, who was a notorious president of the Mongols. I then read Hunter S. Thompson’s book, Hell’s Angels. Then I read a book by George Christie as well, who was another notorious president of The Hell’s Angels.

So being able to have that context through literature and also corroborate with Carim was just unbelievably helpful. He was able to zero in on what was real and also what was current, because a lot of those books I read were from a bygone era of this culture. So Carim was able to help me close the distance and zero in on something that felt authentic and genuine to the time. So he was invaluable, and he’s a great guy.

A lot of the Sons of Anarchy actors caught the motorcycle bug from being in a fictional club. Did it grab you as well? Or does the fact that you’re doing this interview from inside a car suggest otherwise? [Note: Keeley made time for this interview while on the set of another production overseas.]

(Laughs.) I’ve certainly been bitten by the bug. You sit on one of those Harleys, and there’s no feeling quite like it. So I have restrained myself over the past 12 months by not buying a bike, and I think my partner and everybody else in my life is probably very thankful for that. (Laughs.) But I don’t think that bug is going to go away in my future. I love bikes, and I can ride. So it is something that I definitely see in my future as a leisurely kind of thing to do, and this show has definitely nudged me in that direction.

Sam Keeley’s Jayson, Jamie McShane’s Perry, Fabien Frankel’s Grasso and Mark Ruffalo’s Brandis in Task.

Decades from now, when you’re reminiscing about the making of Task, what day will you likely recall first?

There are too many to count because this is the single greatest professional experience I’ve had. Everybody from the ground up who worked on this job strived to make the best show possible. And I think you can see that on the screen.

My very first day with Jamie McShane certainly sticks out. We shot a very small scene from episode five where Jayson picks Perry up outside Donna’s house after he’s just killed Eryn. He gets in the car, and Jayson is like, “The fuck happened to you?” And he tries to hide his wounds and all that. So I remember being like, “Okay, here we go. We’re motoring. This is real.” And it just clicked the second they called to action. We all knew who we were. [Writer’s Note: Keeley’s pleasant demeanor is polar opposite of his character, and it was honestly a bit chilling to see him slip into Jayson for a moment during this answer.]

But another day that really jumps out at me is actually a night at Lefty’s Bar, which is where the Dark Hearts hang out. Everybody was playing pool, and it felt quite jovial and fun. The set decoration was incredible, and we were all smoking fake cigarettes and drinking fake beer while music was playing. And when they called action on that, I felt like I was one of the characters in the books that I had read to study for the role. It felt real, and I remember getting goosebumps on every part of my body, thinking, “Oh my God, this is my job. I’m getting paid to be here.” I believed it, and I bought everything about it. So Task was just filled with jaw-dropping moments like that day after day.

CBS News’ Bari Weiss Shocks ’60 Minutes’ Staff With Question About Why Country Thinks They’re ‘Biased’

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Just days after taking over as editor-in-chief of CBS News, Bari Weiss has reportedly already rocked the boat with some of her staffers. The New York Times published a report on Sunday, October 19, about alleged tension between Weiss and the staff of 60 Minutes following a meeting on Tuesday, October 14.

Weiss reportedly asked the staff, “Why does the country think you’re biased?”

“The inquiry was met with stunned awkwardness, according to three people who recounted details from the private session in Midtown Manhattan,” Michael M. Grynbaum and Benjamin Mullin wrote in the New York Times piece. “The staff of 60 Minutes, the nation’s most-watched news program, view their coverage as firmly nonpartisan and reject criticism from President [Donald] Trump and his allies who argue that it has a liberal slant.”

President Trump sued CBS News’ parent company, Paramount Global, in 2024, claiming 60 Minutes deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris in her favor. Trump and Paramount Global reached a $16 million settlement earlier this year, which has brought the media company under much scrutiny.

Weiss just became the editor-in-chief of CBS News on October 6, but has wasted no time making waves. According to the NYT report, there has been a mixed reaction among CBS News staff to their new leader.

“Some staff members are hopeful that Ms. Weiss will bring some needed energy and ideas to a news division that has struggled to adapt to the digital age,” Grynbaum and Mullin added. “Her interest in big interviews and bigger audiences has buoyed some CBS journalists, who think their network, which has cycled through five presidents in five years, needs a shake-up.”

The journalists also reported that Weiss is “impressing” some top executives at CBS, while “confounding” others. Plus, they noted, she has already been personally involved in some interview bookings with subjects who are right-leaning.

“Ms. Weiss, an ardent supporter of Israel … helped book an interview with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister,” the report said. “She later worked with 60 Minutes producers to land Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, the architects of President Trump’s Middle East peace plan, for this Sunday’s episode.”

‘The Perfect Neighbor’ Heads for the Best Documentary Oscar

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

We’ve seen police cam footage on many true crime shows. But we haven’t seen a movie like “The Perfect Neighbor,” which goes back in time to stitch together a chilling portrait of a murder.

When the film won the Sundance 2025 U.S. Documentary Directing Award, editor-turned-director Geeta Gandbhir knew “there was probably nothing like it,” she said last week on Zoom. Already, the film has earned six nominations for the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, as well as a spot on the Oscar-predictive DOC NYC Short List.

When Gandbhir first found out about the murder of Ocala, Florida resident Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens, 35, who left four children motherless on June 2, 2023 when her white neighbor, Susan Lorincz, shot and killed her, Gandbhir was mourning a family friend.

“It was grief work for us,” she said. “It was my way of processing what had happened. Ajike was close to two of my husband’s cousins, we’re all very close. That connection felt personal. The making of the film, because I have no other skills, frankly, and I don’t know how to do anything else, was what I had to offer the family, and also a way of processing. I wanted to understand how this could happen: how does someone pick up a gun and murder their neighbor over such a trivial dispute, over some nonsense like kids playing in a yard?”

While the filmmaker had edited many film and TV documentaries, and turned to directing fifteen years ago (winning Emmys for “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Two Acts” and “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama”), she often shared directing credit. Not this time.

When Gandbhir first got her hands on the video footage in September 2023, it was overwhelming. “All the material that pertained to the case came to us through the lawyers for the family.” Everything came from the police on a thumb drive: Ring camera, dash cam, cell phone, and body camera footage, detective interviews, 911 calls from both Susan and the community.

‘The Perfect Neighbor’

“It came in a jumble,” said Gandbhir. “It was not organized in any way. I took it upon myself to string it out. We were able to watch through it in pieces, but we didn’t understand how many police were on scene. Sometimes there were two, sometimes there were 15, or some much larger number. We needed to figure out the chronology. I’d never seen any footage proceeding a crime like this, material that went back two years. So I took that material and strung it out into a timeline and spent a couple of weeks literally syncing it. It was detective work. I felt compelled, I had to know. There was this need to understand.”

Once the material was stretched out in a line, Gandbhir saw a movie in it. “We got the footage in September,” she said. “By October, which is when I had strung it out: ‘Holy shit, we could do this.’”

Gandbhir and fellow producer Nikon Kwantu both saw how to use the police cam footage: “It functioned inadvertently, like multi-camera,” she said. “One would split off and talk to this person, another would split off and talk to that person. And, we’ve all been obsessed with films like ‘Paranormal Activity’ or ‘Cloverfield’ or ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ where it’s that first-person POV. It looked immersive. After those two months: ‘There’s a film. I know how to make this.’”

First Gandbhir got permission from Ajike Owens’ mother, Pamela Diaz. “She wanted her daughter’s name not to be forgotten. She takes a lot of strength from Mamie Till, Emmett Till’s mother, who opened the casket at the funeral for him after he was lynched, and told the reporters to come and take pictures, because she really wanted the world to know what happened to her baby,” she said. “[Pamela] wants to push back, turn her pain into purpose, and hopes that this gun violence wouldn’t happen to another family. We thought we would try to do something quick.”

Recognizing the daunting task ahead, Gandbhir brought in her own editor, Viridiana Lieberman. “We started together and made the commitment to live in the body camera footage,” said Gandbhir. “The body camera footage is undeniable. There’s no reporter on the ground. I’m not on the ground. We’re not there influencing things, in this time period where people are constantly questioning the media, and what bias there might be. Sure, you have the cops who are an institution in themselves, but this is an interaction free of a journalist being there. It’s just what happened, right? So we felt that for an audience, the footage would be undeniable.”

What the filmmakers were able to do was recreate two years of incidents leading up to the crime. “These crimes unfortunately happen like every week,” Gandbhir said. “You get gun violence, but you only see the aftermath. You never get to see the community as they were before, in such detail. And again, police body camera footage is for people of color: it’s a violent tool of the state, right? It’s often used to criminalize us, dehumanize us. It’s used for surveillance. It’s used to protect the police. But I wanted to subvert that.”

The movie, somewhat surprisingly, reveals a multi-racial Florida community raising children together, mostly in harmony, except for the one single white woman who keeps calling the cops. “You do see this in Florida,” said Gandbhir, “having this social network, a safety network for their children. You see the father who says, ‘I take care of all these kids like they’re my own,’ the mother who says, when the cop [asks], ‘Which kid is yours?’ she [says], ‘They’re all mine.’ You see the kids are safe. They feel safe. They feel secure. They know that they have multiple parents watching out for them. … It’s not a wealthy neighborhood by any means. But again, that safety network where the kids can just play safe in the street.”

And “The Perfect Neighbor” shows the cops in a southern state behaving in relatively benign, empathetic ways. “The issue of the police is fascinating, because it evokes different things for different people,” said Gandbhir. “The police, we don’t see them come in guns blazing, beating people or anything. But they never see Susan as a threat. Susan weaponized her race and privilege, and she tried to weaponize the police against the community. Susan used hate speech against children. She waved a gun at them. She was constantly harassing and threatening her neighbors. She called the police. She kept abusing the 911 emergency services. By the third time she called, she should have been flagged, right? They just treated her as this nuisance.”

While the police put in an awful lot of time on these calls, “they didn’t protect the community from her,” said Gandbhir. “They didn’t tell the community what they could do: you could also file harassment charges against her. They didn’t tell Susan: ‘Your behavior is actually inappropriate, your behavior is threatening. You need to stop.’ The police are not trained in mediation. They’re trained to deal with crime. And if they could not manage it, then the social workers should have been called in. But instead, they left it to fester, even though Susan also showed erratic behavior. She drove her truck into a gate multiple times, then claimed that she had a panic attack. And yet, she was able to buy two guns. What we see is that the system failed the community, but it also failed Susan. It didn’t save her from herself. She’s in prison for almost the rest of her life because of this. The police were kind, the majority of them were polite, as individuals. But it’s the system. The system is not equipped. The system failed.”

What would Gandbhir change? Among other things, the Stand Your Ground laws that led to the death of Trayvon Martin and people shooting strangers approaching their front door. “People are emboldened by this law,” said Gandbhir. “They essentially commit crimes and then claim that they were fearful of their life. And particularly for Black and Brown folks who are so often criminalized and perceived as a threat due to implicit bias, racism, that makes it really dangerous. And the laws exist in different forms across about 38 states under the Castle Doctrine: You have the right to protect your castle. But unfortunately, like so many things in this country, reform is deeply needed.”

The film avoids labeling Susan Lorincz as “crazy” or “mentally ill.” “There was a psychiatric assessment of her prior to the trial to see if mental illness played into her committing this crime,” said Gandbhir. “They found there was none. The judge ruled that she shot more out of anger than fear. We are careful around the mental illness thing, because the majority of people who have mental illness harm no one. Often, when people commit violent crimes, that is raised, ‘Oh, the person is mentally ill.’ But it was not a factor in the case.”

So her aberrant behavior was anxiety-driven? “The judge ruled that he gave her five years off because he thought she may have had some PTSD from a traumatic childhood,” said Gandbhir. “You can see this in the trial. She’d never committed a crime before of that gravity. So the maximum is 30 years. She got five years off for manslaughter.”

There is some supplemental new footage in the film to give the audience a rest. “We shot some stuff on the ground, for sure, when we were first there,” said Gandbhir. “We shot some vigils. But we didn’t do sit-down interviews. We shot B roll, and under that we put the police or detective interviews. Those were meant to be interstitials, to give people a break, because the body camera footage is relentless. And we needed the community to weigh in. There is a lot of Susan, obviously, and her complaints, and there’s some of Ajike, but in order to get the full picture, the community was really important. So we wanted them to have a voice.”

When Netflix picked up “The Perfect Neighbor” out of Sundance, after they recouped their costs, the filmmakers put the lion’s share of the licensing fee into a fund for Diaz and the kids. “We need a groundswell around this issue,” said Gandbhir. “We need a global audience. I made the film to be a piece of art, but I’m hoping to inspire people to take action.”

Will the film set a new narrative video trend, much like the Oscar-nominated short “Incident” or even the fictional scripted “Adolescence”? “We’re living in a world where it’s familiar,” she said. “You look at Tiktok, you look at all the social media, it’s all user-generated content, right? We live in a world where it is not just that cinema reflects the world and the world reflects art. We’re like cinema. Certainly, in this doc genre, they’ll be demanding more as we have maybe set a trend in that way, but it’s something that exists all around us.”

“The Perfect Neighbor” is now streaming on Netflix.

Next up: For the series “Katrina: Come Hell or High Water,” which has played well on Netflix, Gandbhir and Spike Lee both directed episodes. And a short just came out on HBO: “The Devil Is Busy,” partnered with Soledad O’Brien productions.

‘Hello Betty,’ True Story Behind a Swiss Icon, Boarded by Picture Tree

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Berlin-based sales company Picture Tree Intl. has acquired worldwide sales rights including Germany and Austria from C-Films to “Hello Betty,” the upcoming feature from director Pierre Monnard, who also directed “Winter Palace,” the first Swiss series co-produced by Netflix.

The film centers on the true story of Emmi Creola, the visionary advertising pioneer who created the Swiss culinary icon Betty Bossi in 1956 — a fictional figure who went on to become a household name across generations and language regions in Switzerland.

“Hello Betty,” which stars Sarah Spale, portrays a woman navigating ambition, creativity and the limitations of a male-dominated society. What began as a clever marketing idea became a cultural phenomenon, shaping the way a nation cooked and viewed modern domesticity.

Producer Peter Reichenbach of C-Films said, “Everyone in Switzerland knows Betty Bossi. This film finally tells the story of the brilliant woman behind the name. It’s a story with humor, heart, and universal resonance.”

“ ‘Hello Betty’ is a rare mix of strong emotional storytelling and commercial accessibility,” added Andreas Rothbauer, managing director of Picture Tree Intl. “It has all the ingredients to travel widely — a charismatic female lead, a fascinating real-life story, and broad audience appeal.”

The film will premiere on Nov. 4, 2025, and will be released nationwide across all language regions of Switzerland starting Nov. 20, through Ascot Elite Entertainment.

“Hello Betty” is produced by C-Films in co-production with SRF Swiss Radio and Television, SRG SSR and CH Media TV AG, with support from the Federal Office of Culture, Zurich Filmfund, Cinéforom, Loterie Romande, Stage Pool Focal/Ernst Göhner Foundation and Suissimage, in collaboration with Ascot Elite Entertainment.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 ending explained - every twist broken down

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 ending explained – every twist broken down

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Like its titular zombies, The Walking Dead continues to live on as a shadow of its former self. That is, except for the Daryl Dixon spin-off.

While other spin-offs have failed to capture what made the flagship show so popular, Norman Reedus and his fan-favourite character have endured for three seasons to much greater success.

With a season 4 already confirmed, the future’s looking good for Daryl and his bestie Carol who’s accompanied him for the past two seasons. Except, everyone’s favourite mulleted hero hasn’t exactly had it easy this time around.

Trapped in the Spanish town of Solaz del Amar, Daryl and Carol are caught up in all kinds of drama with the show’s new Big Bad, Fede. Plus, Carol’s been catching feelings for a local named Antonio. It’s a shame then that Fede has kidnapped Antonio and is currently torturing him for info on Daryl.

Will Carol find love at last? Will Daryl ever make it home? And will someone finally cut Daryl’s mullet down to size while he’s sleeping? These questions and more all come to mind watching the seventh, final episode of Daryl Dixon season 3.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 ending explained

The finale begins with a callback to a callback. Remember when Daryl placed Laurent’s Rubik’s Cube at a memorial to honour him a few episodes prior? (Laurent was the French kid Daryl looked after in seasons 1 and 2.)

Well, we’re back there now with another familiar face from previous seasons. Yep, the mysterious eyepatch guy is actually Stéphane Codron, who started out as a villain in season 1 before he switched sides.

The last time we saw him was at the end of season 2 when hallucinogenic bat poop in the Channel Tunnel caused him to see visions of his brother, during which he stabbed Daryl with a bayonet. Yep, really. That encounter ended with Stéphane running off to who knows where and he hasn’t been seen since. Until now. More on that later.

While Antonio is being tortured by Fede, Carol tries to convince his ungrateful son Roberto to help save him. She tells him to wait for Daryl and Justina to return from their mission and board the boat as she goes it alone. Carol’s smitten!

Fede makes an example of Antonio, stringing him up on a torture device in the town square as Carol watches in horror from the shadows. Only when he reveals where the Americans are hiding will Antonio be freed. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to scapegoat them in front of the town to assert Fede’s dominance further.

When night falls, Carol comes to free Antonio while avoiding gun fire from Fede’s henchmen in the distance.

Meanwhile, Daryl and Paz go undercover at a royal banquet, working as masked servants right under everyone’s noses. This is where the people with power gather in luxury, the same people who demand villages offer up their women to Spanish royalty in a ritual known as “La Ofrenda” (“The Offering”).

As they wine and dine in luxurious finery, the royals watch a special show on stage where walkers are dressed up fancy and strung up like marionette puppets to dance for them. The symbolism isn’t exactly subtle, but it’s a unique, striking image still, which has become somewhat of a rarity in the Walking Dead franchise these days.

The King dedicates a speech to his son Guillermo, and his “beautiful future wife” Elena, who was snatched away from her girlfriend Paz earlier this season.

Daryl ain’t having it, so he cuts the walkers free and opens the curtain, unleashing them on the crowd. He also starts a few fires for good measure as Paz heads off to rescue Elena.

The pair reunite with a hug in Elena’s place, where Paz finds out her love has a son named Pablo. They plan to run off together, but then a guard knocks Paz out, who wakes up to Guillermo threatening her.

“You want my wife?” he shouts. “Now you’ll be together every night because I’ll mount your head on her bedpost.”

As murderous threats go, that’s a pretty good one, but Elena then quite literally stabs him in the back to save Paz. They get the boy and run.

At the same time, Daryl saves Justina from the man who chose her at “The Matching” ritual before all hell broke loose. In doing so, Daryl saves some other women, because that’s just the nice guy that Daryl is.

Carol also received a welcome dose of human kindness from Antonio who’s prepared some tea for her in a brief safe spot. And not just any tea either, but with milk and honey. That’s how you know he’s one of the good ones.

Of course, it’s not long before Fede’s men show up pounding at the door. Luckily, the local women who hid them away show them to a convenient escape route concealed down in their basement.

One brief walker attack later and all our faves are reunited safely above ground. Paz thanks Daryl for all his help and then bounces while he and Justina take the scenic route back to the lighthouse on his motorbike.

They stop off briefly to share some thoughts which are supposed to sound deep, but come across a bit basic as they point out how the apocalypse turned some people bad and others good.

Eventually, they arrive back at the lighthouse but are welcomed by two intruders who attack and take Justina hostage. Valentina saves them quite quickly though, revealing that Roberto had her hide after she was injured in the initial attack.

Daryl runs off back to the village again in order to rescue Carol who went back for Antonio again. Fede has captured them both, but decides to immediately let them go…

Of course, there’s a catch. The catch being that Antonio’s son Roberto has been chained to two of his dead friends who are about to transform just as more walkers are led into the courtyard.

Carol and Antonio try to remove the chains but it’s too late. A local named Alba throws a knife to Carol, but Fede’s men shoot it away with startling accuracy. Unfortunately for them, said accuracy escapes them just moments later when Daryl arrives and starts shooting at them from a balcony nearby.

Daryl quickly picks off his aggressors as Carol picks up the knife and gets stabby stabby with the walkers. Justina arrives then, casually strolling through the mini-horde as both Daryl and Fede shoot at the zombies trying to eat her.

Remember, Fede is Justina’s uncle, so he does care about her safety still, despite how poorly he’s treated her up until now. This works against Fede though when the villagers emerge to hear Justina’s claims that Fede has been lying to them all.

She also announces that El Alcazar “is in ashes” thanks to Daryl, which means The Ofrenda is over for good.

Instead of torturing Fede like he did Antonio, Justina suggests taking him to the dungeon. To hurt him would mean they’re not better than him.

The evil cartoonish mayor then screams “This is your fault!” at Daryl as he’s led away. “You’ll pay!”

Do Daryl and Carol make it home?

Back at the lighthouse, Daryl and Carol finally get around to sharing those hot dogs they’ve been hankering for all season. Instead of sailing off immediately, using the boat to find their way home, the pair recuperate and open up to each other on the beach.

“This whole time I’ve been trying to get home,” says Daryl. “Why the f**k did I leave in the first place? Why did I have to get in a fight with the guy in Maine? Why didn’t I leave France when I could have? This makes no sense. My whole life I’ve been running, just running and fighting. That’s all.”

Carol says he did it to survive, but Daryl worries this has become a habit now, that he might arrive home and feel the urge to leave again still.

The pair hug it out, reminding us that this show is always at its best when Daryl and Carol are actually together instead of getting separated on endless side missions.

Meanwhile, Fede’s mama brings him food in jail. He asks to be freed, telling her that the town will obviously kill him as soon as Daryl and co sail away. “You already lost one son. You don’t want to lose another…”

The Spanish matriarch doesn’t say anything, but it’s not long before we find out what she did next, because Fede suddenly shows up on the beach, holding a gun to Daryl in a bid for revenge. But he doesn’t just run up and shoot him. No, that would have been the smart thing to do.

“I let you into my town,” he cries. “I gave you food and shelter and you took everything from me. Do you really think you can just sail home now?”

Just before Fede pulls the trigger, Carol appears and knocks him to the ground. A bullet’s fired off in the struggle, which somehow starts a fire in the ship. Others join in to help Carol, including Antonio who knocks Fede out with a rock.

The fire quickly devours the ship in a series of explosions, which means the gang aren’t going anywhere. A Spanish version of Johnny Cash’s Hurt plays as Daryl and Carol watch their ride home go up in flames.

It’s all very dramatic, and then Stéphane shows up again, watching the explosions from a distance using his one remaining eye.

With a fourth season already confirmed, it was inevitable that Daryl and Carol wouldn’t make it home just yet. But it seems that after bouncing around America, France, and the UK (briefly), the showrunners aren’t done with this Spanish setting just yet.

Let’s just hope the siesta they take between seasons is enough to inject some new life into this spin-off before it shuffles on into the horizon for good. Since Daryl and Carol left France, the show has lost some of its “je ne sais quoi”.

In the UK, Daryl Dixon season 3 will be available to stream on Sky and NOW from 24th October.
