Toronto Film ‘Dry Leaf’ Finds North American Home with Cinema Guild

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Cinema Guild has bought North American distribution rights to “Dry Leaf,” Georgian filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze’s follow up to “What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” which competed at the Berlinale in 2021.

“Dry Leaf,” meanwhile, had its world premiere at the 78th Locarno Film Festival in August, where it
competed for the Golden Leopard.

The film will have its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will go on to play at the New York Film Festival. Cinema Guild will open the film theatrically in 2026,
followed by a national theatrical rollout.

Set against the quiet landscapes of rural Georgia, “Dry Leaf” follows Irakli (David Koberidze), a
father searching for his missing daughter, Lisa, a young sports photographer who vanished while documenting football fields in remote villages. Joined by Lisa’s enigmatic friend Levani
Otar Nijaradze), he embarks on a journey across the countryside, encountering strangers,
children, and fragments of Lisa’s presence. Their fruitless search gradually becomes a
meditative odyssey until a mysterious event offers one final clue, drawing Irakli and Levani into
the unknown and rekindling a faint glimmer of hope.

“Alexandre Koberidze is a filmmaker of rare vision and with a distinct voice that we are honored
to help bring to audiences”, said Peter Kelly, Cinema Guild President, who negotiated the deal with Ioanna Stais of Heretic, which handles international sales on the film.

Stais said The Cinema Guild is a “partner we deeply trust to bring Alexandre Koberidze’s singular vision to audiences with the care and commitment it deserves.” The sales executive said the film is “bound to connect with viewers in a memorable way” with its “distinctive style and deeply human storytelling.”

“Dry Leaf” was produced by Mariam Shatberashvili and Luise Hauschild at New Matter Films,
alongside Koberidze whose previous feature “What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?” won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale. His feature debut, “Let the Summer Never Come Again” won the Grand Prix at FID Marseille.

CBS News Implements New Interview Policy For ‘Face The Nation’

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

CBS News said that Face the Nation will only broadcast live or live-to-tape interviews following Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem‘s complaints over edits made to her appearance on the show on Sunday.

A CBS News spokesperson said, “In response to audience feedback over the past week, we have implemented a new policy for greater transparency in our interviews. Face the Nation will now only broadcast live or live-to-tape interviews (subject to national security or legal restrictions). This extra measure means the television audience will see the full, unedited interview on CBS and we will continue our practice of posting full transcripts and the unedited video online.”

Face the Nation has published full transcripts and unedited interviews online, but Noem complained that the broadcast “shamefully edited” an interview in which she made allegations about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the undocumented immigrant who has been at the center of much coverage about the Trump administration’s deportation efforts. She alleged that CBS News “shamefully edited the interview to whitewash the truth about this MS-13 gang member and the threat he poses to American public safety.”

More to come.

Kurt Russell Joins 'Yellowstone' Spinoff Series

Kurt Russell Joins ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Series

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Kurt Russell is saddling up for Yellowstone spinoff series, The Madison.

The Emmy and Golden Globe nominee has joined the forthcoming series, from Taylor Sheridan and starring Michelle Pfeiffer, as both a castmember and executive producer.

Previously announced cast includes Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Rebecca Spence, Danielle Vasinova and Kevin Zegers.

The Yellowstone universe has no signs of slowing down following the likely series finale of the flagship that aired back in December 2024. The Madison is one of several spinoff series currently in production, also including CBS’ Y: Marshals, starring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton in the fall, and Paramount+’s Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler spinoff, Dutton Ranch (working title), which returns Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser to their roles and doesn’t yet have a premiere date. Another prequel, 1944, is in development following the likely conclusion of 1923.

The Madison is a modern-day spinoff with little known about how the characters will relate to the main Dutton family of the flagship series. Here is the official logline: “The series is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”

Michelle Randolph, who married into the Dutton family on Dutton prequel series 1923 as Elizabeth, mused about if her character could crossover to The Madison, given how her story ended. “I don’t know a ton about The Madison,” she told The Hollywood Reporter after the 1923 ender, “but I know they come from the East Coast. I so I’m like, is there some sort of web [connecting] Elizabeth?”

Russell joins the growing list of A-list talent within Sheridan’s Yellowstone-verse, also including Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren on 1923 and Ed Harris, newly cast in Dutton Ranch.

The movie star known for Overboard, Tequila Sunrise and The Hateful Eight to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently starring in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alongside his son, Wyatt Russell. He is repped by UTA.

The Madison is executive produced by Sheridan, David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Christina Voros, Michael Friedman, Pfeiffer, Russell and Keith Cox, and is produced by Paramount Television Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions.

Erin Bates’ Husband Shares Worrying Update on ‘Bringing Up Bates’ Star After ‘Severe Seizure’

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

After the birth of her seventh baby with husband Chad Paine on August 25, Erin Bates developed a severe UTI and kidney infection, which sent her into septic shock. In the latest update from Paine, he revealed how things have recently taken a turn for the worse.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday (September 4), Paine shared how Erin “suffered a lengthy and severe seizure” on Wednesday night (September 3), leaving her “extremely weak” and “only half conscious.” He noted that his wife is currently in the ICU and “doctors are running scans and tests to determine the cause.”

“Up to this point, Erin’s infection was getting better, but we found ourselves back in a place of heartache, uncertainty, and tears,” he wrote in an emotional post alongside photos of himself by his wife’s bedside. “As her husband, it is one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced — to sit by her side and watch her struggle while being so helpless to ease her suffering.”

He went on to say he “can’t even imagine life without my best friend,” adding, “We hold on to faith that healing is coming, even in the midst of the unknown. Your prayers are felt and we are forever grateful.”

Erin, who now shares seven children with Paine, was one of the stars of the reality series Bringing Up Bates, the Up TV series that centered on the daily lives of Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, their 19 children, and their extended family. The show ran for ten seasons between 2015 and 2021.

Previously, Paine announced the arrival of baby number seven, Henry Blythe, born on August 25th after “a long and emotional labor,” according to his August 27 Instagram post. “Henry is doing wonderful, but we would so appreciate your prayers for Erin as she continues to recover from some complications,” Paine wrote at the time.

Fans, friends, and family jumped into the comments of Paine’s latest post to share their prayers and well-wishes.

“We are continuing to pray every day for a miraculous healing. Love you all,” wrote Erin’s brother, Lawson Bates.

Lawson’s wife, former Nickelodeon star Tiffany Espensen, added, “Our thoughts, prayers, and love are with you Paine Family ❤️ We love y’all so much!”

“Sweet Erin 😭💔 Praying right now for her complete healing, and will continue!” wrote another.

“Chad, we are upholding you all in prayer daily 🙏🏻,” said one commenter.

Another added, “Thank you so much for taking time to update us. I know this has to be unimaginably hard.”

“This is so hard to read. I’m praying for Erin,” added one user.

The Lost Ending of 'The Magnificent Ambersons' Is Being Remade with AI

The Lost Ending of ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’ Is Being Remade with AI

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The lost 43 minutes of Orson Welles‘ “The Magnificent Ambersons” is the holy grail of cinema. The legend goes that after a bad test screening, RKO tacked on a happy ending and chopped the film from 131 minutes to 88. The missing minutes were melted for their silver nitrate, but cinephiles have spent years seeking a print that retained the the footage; TCM even sponsored a trip to Brazil in pursuit of a complete print.

Like other efforts, Brazil didn’t pan out. Welles believed that the studio butchered a movie that would be seen as greater than his debut, “Citizen Kane,” but would he have used generative AI if it offered the possibility of recreating what he lost?

IndieWire's Alison Foreman at a special treadmill screening of 'The Long Walk' at Culver Theater in Los Angeles

Showrunner, which bills itself as the “Netflix of AI,” is either betting Welles would (or, has the hubris not to bother with the question). It is using “The Magnificent Ambersons” to develop its latest model, FILM-1, which Showrunner hopes will let people generate lifelike short films.

Working with Brian Rose, who spent the last five years trying to recreate the film with charcoal drawings, physical models of the sets, and researching storyboards and screenplay drafts, Showrunner will spend next two years to get as close as possible to Welles’ vision.

“Perhaps in its reconstructed form, we will all say, in the words of an audience card at the disastrous preview in Pomona that ended the film’s chances: ‘I think that this is the best picture that I have ever seen,’” Showrunner CEO Edward Saatchi said in a statement to IndieWire.

AI enhanced keyframe from ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’

Before you say “Why in God’s name would someone use AI to do this,” Saatchi would ask you to consider that “Ambersons” is about a family dynasty that failed to adapt to the rise of new technology and the invention of the automobile at the dawn of the 20th century.

Saatchi also suggested that if you’re going to train an AI model, why not train it on the best and aim to teach AI to move and think like a master like Welles?

“For FILM-1, which will unlock longer-form live-action stories on the Showrunner platform, we’re starting with Orson Welles because he is the greatest storyteller of the last 200 years,” he said. “So many people are rightly skeptical of AI’s impact on cinema — but we hope that this gives people a sense of a positive contribution that AI can make for storytelling.”

Showrunner will use AI keyframe generation for all major shots in “The Magnificent Ambersons,” using model motion and trajectory control to re-imagine Welles’ camera movements. Set photos of the lost 43 minutes will help generate the spatial setting.

Some scenes will be filmed with live actors and the team will use AI face transfer, pose transfer, and voice generation. Showrunner also hired Tom Clive, an AI and digital artist on Robert Zemeckis’ “Here,” to power the film’s look.

Showrunner, which already lets user generate their own TV episodes, gained attention when it developed AI-generated episodes of “South Park” without Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s approval. This summer, it received backing from Amazon.

Perhaps most crucially, Showrunner described the “Ambersons” remake as a “noncommercial, academic project.” The film won’t be released in theaters; it’s all in the name of academia and model research, which is how it got around the same issue with “South Park.” Warner Bros. owns the film rights to “Ambersons”; Concord, which recently bought the RKO film library, owns the derivative rights. Saatchi said if either see a market for re-releasing the film, more power to them.

Saatchi believes in the vision of “playable” feature films that allow you to explore the larger universe and world and build your own story within it. The company already does this with some animated series that let you use prompts to build 5- to 10-minute episodes; it hopes to extend that ability to realistic short films and features.

Saatchi noted that while AI can’t sustain a story beyond one short episode, it’s getting closer to prompting entire films. “The FILM-1 suite is a step toward a scary, strange future of generative storytelling,” he said.

Even his detractors can agree on that, although the cinephiles who feverishly pursued this particular grail may not support this resolution. To that point, Saatchi quotes “Ambersons” protagonist and ambivalent automobile inventor Eugene Morgan:

“With all their speed forward they may be a step backward in civilization. It may be that they won’t add to the beauty of the world, nor to the life of men’s souls. I am not sure. But automobiles have come, and almost all outward things are going to be different because of what they bring.’”

True Crime Gets Fresh Angles as FilmRise Expands Portfolio

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

FilmRise has inked deals for two true crime series that will explore the psychological elements driving fatal crimes.

The streaming distributor will co-produce “Murder in Mind” with CBS AMC Networks U.K. and Blue Ant Studios, while “Pushed to Death” represents a partnership between FilmRise, CBS AMC Networks and All3Media International.

Both 10-episode series will receive different treatment across markets. “Pushed to Death” will air under that title in North America via FilmRise, while U.K. audiences will see the same content as “Fatal Fall: Murder or Accident” through CBS AMC Networks U.K. All3Media International will shop the show globally using the British title.

The deals give FilmRise North American exclusivity across all platforms for both projects, continuing the company’s strategy of building its true crime brand.

“FilmRise has a strong track record of delivering true crime that resonates with North American audiences,” said Jonitha Keymoore, senior VP of content acquisitions at Radial Entertainment. “Viewers expect fresh angles into the genre, and both series deliver. ‘Murder in Mind’ examines the psychology behind killers, while ‘Pushed to Death’ uncovers a shocking pattern of fatal falls.”

The programming fits alongside FilmRise’s existing crime slate, which includes “Killers: Caught on Camera” and “Murdered at First Sight.”

“Much like our other popular series ‘Killers: Caught on Camera’ and ‘Murdered at First Sight,’ we like to develop shows that take a different angle from what’s already out there, keeping audiences engaged,” Keymoore added. “‘Murder in Mind’ dives into the psychology of what might make a ‘murderer,’ while ‘Pushed to Death’ shines a light on a lesser-explored type of crime.”

Sam Rowden, VP of content team at AMC Networks International U.K., called the U.K. version “a gripping and emotionally charged series that explores the intriguing mysteries behind these tragic deaths.”

“We’re thrilled to co-produce with FilmRise and collaborate with Coming Up Roses and All3Media International to bring this powerful narrative to U.K. audiences,” Rowden said.

The first series focuses on criminal psychology, examining what drives ordinary people to commit murder through case studies featuring interviews with investigators and those who knew the perpetrators. Back 2 Back Productions will handle production.

The second series investigates deaths involving apparent falls from heights — examining whether victims were pushed from locations like balconies, cliffs and bridges. Coming Up Roses is producing, with Oliver Wright serving as executive producer and Matt Gillbe as series editor.

“Working with the fantastic teams at both the CBS AMC Networks U.K. Channels Partnership and FilmRise on this dynamic series has been a complete joy,” Wright said. “Beautifully and sensitively produced, with access to key voices, and featuring extraordinary archive, every episode of this series gets under your skin.”

All3Media International’s Rachel Job highlighted the central mystery element: “We are delighted to be working with the brilliant team at Coming Up Roses and to partner with AMC and FilmRise on this true crime series.”

“With its gripping central question — was it a fall or a push — the show delivers an incredible hook through which to explore compelling, edge-of-your-seat true crime stories that will resonate with audiences worldwide,” Job said.

FilmRise operates more than 600 FAST channels and maintains a content library exceeding 30,000 titles spanning multiple genres including established true crime series like “Forensic Files” and “Unsolved Mysteries.”

Piers Morgan ‘Uncensored’ YouTube Show Heading To Channel 5

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

In what has been described as the “worlds-first collaboration between a YouTube current affairs show and a legacy broadcaster,” Piers Morgan’s Uncensored show has found a fresh linear home on Channel 5 (now 5).

Piers Morgan Uncensored will be shown as a 90-minute highlights show on the Paramount UK network each week, 5 has just revealed, with the first airing next Friday at 11 p.m. GMT (3 p.m. PT).

Uncensored features Morgan’s take on the week’s news along with high-profile interviews with the likes of Donald Trump, Cristiano Ronaldo and the ‘real-life Martha’ from Baby Reindeer. The show was previously the flagship for Rupert Murdoch’s now-defunct linear network TalkTV, but Morgan took it YouTube-only last year, claiming that he could get far more viewers on that platform. He says that it has picked up more than one billion views in the past three years. Today’s surprise move marks a return to linear for the ex-CNN host who also used to present a morning show on ITV.

Traditional TV gatekeepers leveraging YouTube was one of the big topics at last month’s Edinburgh TV Festival. However, Morgan’s move certainly marks the first time a show has left linear to YouTube, only to return to a different linear platform.

Morgan said: “I’m really excited our show will be crashing onto British TV screens in a game-changing partnership with 5, bringing viewers the most explosive debates,  jaw-dropping interviews, and headline-grabbing moments every single week.”

5 commissioner Federico Ruiz added: “Being thrilled to have Piers Morgan on 5 doesn’t scratch the surface. Uncensored will be an excellent fit: our viewers love straight talk, big opinions, and unapologetic personalities—and Piers delivers all three and then some. A linear, terrestrial broadcaster partnering with a current affairs YouTube channel is the sort of exciting cross-cultural handshake that marks where the industry is heading. The fuse is lit. We’re braced for impact … Piers is coming to 5.”

With rumors around its future in the Paramount-Skydance era swirling, 5 has had a good week, having struck a new deal for NFL rights last week. Commissioned by Ruiz, Commissioning Editor 5 and Paramount +, Piers Morgan Uncensored is a  Wake Up Production. Executive editor is Alex Campbell.

Norman Lear Awards to Honor ‘The Pitt,’ ‘Dying for Sex,’ ‘Shrinking’

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The Norman Lear Awards for TV That Makes a Difference, formerly the Sentinel Awards, will honor The Pitt, Dying for Sex, Shrinking and other series for their powerful storytelling this October.

The additional series being recognized for their depictions of meaningful issues like racism, cancer and climate change are Chicago Med, Grey’s Anatomy, Matlock and Paradise.

The Pitt will receive the Culture of Health Award for its first season. Chicago Med is being recognized for its exploration of racial disparities in health care in its “Trust Fall” episode. Dying for Sex will be honored for its approach to breast cancer in the episode titled, “It’s Not That Serious.” Grey’s Anatomy will be recognized for its exploration of advances in medicine/clinical trials with its “Ridin’ Solo” episode. Matlock’s look at addiction and recovery in the “Claws” episode is being awarded, as is how Paradise tackled climate change in “The Day.” And Shrinking‘s second-season “Last Thanksgiving” episode will be recognized for how it explored caregiving.

The honors, presented by the Hollywood, Health & Society program at USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center, are being renamed in honor of the late, trailblazing writer and producer behind All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude and One Day at a Time.

“Norman would be thrilled that this award carries his name,” said producer Lyn Lear, his wife of 37 years, in a statement. “He loved what HH&S does, as do I, and he loved celebrating the creative community’s passion for making a difference.”

The Lear Center founding director and Lear chair in entertainment, media and society at Annenberg, Marty Kaplan, added, “Writers and actors love being on a hit show. These awards remind us they also love being on a show that matters.”

As for The Pitt, the awards said in Thursday’s announcement that the Emmy-nominated medical drama provides “an unflinching look at the embattled healthcare system coping with staff shortages and deep cuts.”

“We were delighted to connect the writers of The Pitt with experts on a range of topics,” HH&S director, Kate Folb, said in a statement. “It’s what we can do for any show.”

Scripted shows from network, cable and streaming services were reviewed by awards judges twice: for accuracy of information and then for entertainment value and potential benefit to the viewing audience.

The 2025 Norman Lear Awards for TV That Makes a Difference will be presented at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on Monday, Oct. 27.
