“We Have To Stick Together”

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Howard Jones, the ’80s British pop star, was preparing to tape a performance of Things Can Only Get Better, and celebrity chef Cristiano Petroni had been cooking up meatballs and polenta all day when Jimmy Kimmel found out that he was set to be taken off of ABC two weeks ago.

It’s just after 3pm on September 17 and Kimmel gets a phone call from ABC executives. “They say they want to talk to me. This is unusual. They didn’t even know I was doing a show previous to this,” he joked on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “I have like five people working in my office with me, so the only private place to go is the bathroom. The ABC executives say, ‘Listen, we want to take the temperature down. We’re concerned about what you’re going to say tonight, and we decided that the best route is to take the show off the air’. I said, ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea’. Then there was a vote, and I lost the vote, so I put my pants back on, I walked out to my office, and I called in some of the executive producers and I said, ‘They’re pulling the show off the air’.”

Kimmel’s wife Molly McNearney, who is an executive producer on the show, said the comedian was “whiter than Jim Gaffigan” when he found out.

He admitted that he thought this was the end. “I’m never coming back on the air. That’s really what I thought,” he said.

Kimmel said that as he was heading home that evening, he was followed by 20 paparazzi cars as well as two helicopters. When he arrived home, his 11-year-old daughter told her father that she could sell her Labubus, while his son “got naked and started running around the house”.

Both Kimmel and Colbert heard from unexpected people when they became headline news. Colbert revealed that he heard from a high school girlfriend, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and James Taylor when his show was axed. Kimmel revealed that Taylor also sent him a text. “I want to see if JT did a cut and paste on us,” he joked.

Kimmel’s suspension was another watershed moment for late-night television, which two months earlier, had been hit by the fact that CBS was axing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Tonight, was another major moment for late-night. Kimmel was appearing on The Late Show on the same night as Colbert was appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which decamped to Brooklyn for its traditional run of shows.

Deadline understands that Colbert taped JKL! before Kimmel joined him at the Ed Sullivan Theater, a move that has never happened before in late-night. The closest recent stunt is when Kimmel hosted The Tonight Show and Jimmy Fallon hosted JKL! on April Fool’s Day in 2022.

Kimmel has regularly taken his show to Brooklyn over the years; in fact, it’s not the first time that Colbert has appeared on the show in New York. The Colbert Report star appeared alongside The Daily Show host Jon Stewart in 2012.

On The Late Show, Kimmel said to Colbert “we have to stick together” and called the experience an “emotional rollercoaster”.

The pair agreed that they both find themselves appreciating being on late-night more after their recent experiences. Kimmel joked that Colbert’s staff was asking if he was hiring. “I’ll be Guillermo’s side kick,” added Colbert.

Colbert asked Kimmel that when he was a radio DJ, did he ever think that the President would be “celebrating your unemployment?”

“That son of a bitch… I never even imagined there would ever be a situation in which the President of our country was celebrating hundreds of Americans losing their jobs, somebody who took pleasure in that. That, to me, is the absolute opposite of what a leader of this country is supposed to be,” he replied.

Towards the end of The Late Show interview, Kimmel asked Colbert, “When are you going to go nuts?” He didn’t answer, but Kimmel brought gifts including a Statue of Liberty bong and his sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez turned up with tequila shots. Told he only had a minute left, Colbert joked, “What are they going to do? Cancel me?”

Then, he raised a toast, “To good friends, great jobs and late-night TV.”

Over on JKL!, Kimmel joked that “it’s the show the FCC doesn’t want you to see” and he and Colbert “thought it might be a fun way to drive the President nuts”.

Colbert revealed that he was on stage shooting The Late Show when he received a text that Kimmel had been “pulled indefinitely by ABC”. Colbert brought a clip, where he says “Wow” a couple of times and then takes a break to figure out what went on. “There’s no signal in the Ed Sullivan Theater, so there was no rationale,” he said. “I generally assume it was your fault.”

Colbert then told the story about his own cancelation. He said his wife jokingly asked, “What happened, did you get canceled?”, not knowing that he had just found out his show had been axed by CBS.

He said that his wife convinced him to tell his staff the next day. He admitted that it took several takes to record his announcement message because he was so nervous.

Kimmel was also joined in Brooklyn by Seth Meyers (and his brother Josh, who plays Gavin Newsom on JKL!). “What happened with your show?,” he asked. “We’re back on the air,” Kimmel replied. “I was rooting for you, that’s really good to hear.”

written by jummy84

Free Solo climber Alex Honnold is reaching new heights in an upcoming Netflix special, Skyscraper Live.

In the new 2-hour live special, world-renowned American rock climber Honnold will attempt to become the first person to free solo one of the tallest buildings on the planet, named Taipei 101. The skyscraper, which is the tallest building in Taiwan and the 11th tallest in the world, stands at 1,667 ft tall and includes 101 floors.

“Skyscraper Live will kick off 2026 as our latest global must-watch live event,” said Brandon Riegg, vice president of nonfiction series and sports at Netflix. “Watching Alex Honnold free climb Taipei 101 will be an adrenaline inducing spectacle that you can’t look away from. Everyone will be talking about it as it happens.”

Honnold was previously featured in the Oscar-winning documentary, Free Solo. It followed his historic free solo of El Capitan’s 3,000-foot Freerider route in Yosemite National Park, which means he climbed it without a rope and alone. Directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the film won the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2019.

His other accomplishments include the free solo ascents of Zion’s Moonlight Buttress, Yosemite’s Half Dom and the Yosemite “Triple Crown,” which he completed alone and in under 24 hours.

Netflix’s Skyscraper Live is produced by Plimsoll Productions Limited (part of ITV Studios), with Al Berman serving as showrunner and executive producer. Honnold, Grant Mansfield, James Smith, Alan Eyres and Jonathan Retseck are also exec producers. Joe DeMaio will direct the special.

While an exact release date for Skyscraper Live has yet to be announced, the special is expected to premiere in early 2026.

Celebs Love Emi Jay’s ’90s-Inspired Claw Clips — Now the Founder Predicts the Next Nostalgic Hair Trend

Throwback with your hair back! Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Selena Gomez have all hopped on the ’90s claw clip revival — a look once made iconic by Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Aniston — thanks to Emi Jay.

Founded by Julianne Goldmark, the brand has become a go-to for It-girls wanting to sweep their hair up in seconds while still making a chic statement.

“It’s been so special to see claw clips come back in the way that they have, especially since they’re part of Emi Jay’s DNA,” Goldmark tells ET.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur sees her clips, headbands, pins, bows, and scrunchies as little jewels for your hair and the finishing touch that makes any outfit pop.

“Hair accessories are like your staple pair of small gold hoops. They pull everything together, even with jeans and a tee. A hair accessory makes the whole look feel more intentional and polished without trying too hard,” she notes.

And the best part? No heat or hours in front of the mirror are required.

Hailey Bieber/Instagram

“We all love a look that’s cute but doesn’t take forever. … There’s something satisfying about a quick, effortless updo that still looks intentional while keeping your hair out of your face.”

While the claw clip craze shows no signs of slowing down, Goldmark already has her eye on what’s next.

“Ponytail barrettes and tortoise barrettes are going to have a nice moment this fall and winter in an elevated way,” she predicts.

In addition to her signature accessories, Goldmark swears by her line’s Heavenly Hair Milk, Halo Hair Oil, Angelstick, brushes, and the new Toasted Sugar Aura Hair Mist to keep her strands shiny and strong.

“Healthy hair has always been so important to me because it just makes you feel yourself, but better. When your hair feels soft, shiny, and nourished, it’s amazing how much more confident you feel, even on a busy day.”

Harry Potter TV series | Release date speculation and latest news

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

These include not only the IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson playing Molly Weasley, but also Dexter’s John Lithgow playing Albus Dumbledore, and Nick Frost (the Cornetto Trilogy) taking on the mantle of Rubeus Hagrid.

Filming has already begun for the first season, adapting the Philosopher’s Stone book into eight episodes — making it four times the length of the first among the Harry Potter movies. However, for more on the Harry Potter series’, including the potential release date, more casting news, and the TV show’s plot, the rest of this watch guide below has you covered.

Harry Potter TV series release date speculation

JK Rowling.

HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation is currently expected to premiere in 2027, following comments by CEO & President of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav.

Originally reported by TVLine, Zaslav told reporters back in November 2024: “Oh, it could probably be [2027], something like that”.

“But don’t hold me to any of that, because we’re just getting started in the writing and casting process”.

Although an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, we’ll update this page as soon as we hear more.

A lot has happened since Zaslav’s comments, including the casting of the key actors, but the logistics still look like a 2027 release date for the Harry Potter show is doable.

Filming for the new Harry Potter began in July 2025, beginning what is intended to be a seven-season adaptation, taking place across the UK in locations like London Zoo, King’s Cross Station, and Hertfordshire.

If filming wraps by the end of 2025, that gives HBO a full year for post-production (which is likely to be quite complicated for a big-budget fantasy series), as well as getting started on season 2.

One obvious concern is making sure the show stays on track to release one new season per year, so the lead actors don’t end up growing too old for their roles.

Speaking about HBO’s plans to film new seasons as quickly and efficiently as possible, HBO CEO Casey Bloys, when talking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub at HBO press event, said: “From 11 to 13, is a big jump in kids’ lives. You can get away with 13 to 15, something like that. So we are going to have to think about scheduling and shooting so that they don’t grow too much between seasons. It is a consideration.”

“I think an annual schedule would be tough, but it depends on how much is written ahead of time.”

Bloys also confirmed that author JK Rowling is involved in the project, amid ongoing controversy regarding her views on trans rights, which have turned many former fans away from the franchise.

In response to these concerns, an HBO spokesperson said (via Variety): “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance”.

“J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

This has done little to quell concerns over Rowling’s impact as a public figure, and how her income from the Potter franchise may be used to facilitate anti-LGBTQ+ projects.

In recent years, the author was notably absent from the 20-year anniversary special of the Harry Potter movies, and the 2023 Hogwarts Legacy spin-off game faced boycotts. Meanwhile, several fan-run organisations have distanced themselves from Rowling, including the international association for real-life Quidditch, which has renamed the sport “quadball.”

Who will be the cast starring in the Harry Potter TV series?

Arabella Stanton smiling into camera

As mentioned above, the lead stars playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger have been confirmed. Back in September, there was an open casting call looking for the three kids, with Warner boss Channing Dungey admitting it would be “tricky” to allocate the roles (via Variety).

Now we know that, in HBO’s Harry Potter series, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione and Alastair Stout will play Ron.

Stanton is known for having previously starred in the West End production of Matilda, as well as the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Starlight Express. Stout has been seen in TV advertisements, while McLaughlin will be seen in Sky Original comedy Grow.

Following the lead actors being announced, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod said in a statement to Variety: “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron”.

“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

Meanwhile, HBO previously announced that John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter show.

Lithgow previously said of taking on the role: “It came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited.”

Elsewhere, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) will star as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds) will star as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) will appear as Rubeus Hagrid.

While those four series regulars had previously been rumoured to be joining the project, some other new additions have been more unexpected.

The more surprising additions are Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Argus Filch, who will appear in guest/recurring roles. Thallon is currently best known in the theatre world and most recently starred in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2025 Hamlet.

In June, a whole load of new additions were also announced to fill out supporting roles. Katherine Parkinson (Rivals) will play Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt (Lord of the Flies) will play Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn (Ripley) will play Lucius Malfoy and Bertie Carvel (The Crown) will play Cornelius Fudge.

Meanwhile, Leo Earley will play Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni will play Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah will play Lavender Brown, Bel Powley (Masters of the Air) will play Petunia Dursley and Daniel Rigby (I, Jack Wright) will play Vernon Dursley.

Unfortunately, those hoping for returns from the film franchise’s stars, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint, are out of luck – it’s not looking likely. Chatting to ComicBook.com, Radcliffe quashed any speculation about him making an appearance.

He said: “My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh, and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere.”

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

He continued: “So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way… but I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world, and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

Argus Filch star David Bradley told RadioTimes.com: “I think it’ll be very interesting to see what they will do with the extra time they’ll have to film more of the books than we could.

“The Goblet of Fire and the last two, they were quite chunky – how do you condense those into a two and a half hour film?

“Of course, you’ve got to sacrifice quite a lot of plot and characters. I’m assuming the reason they’re doing it is they’ll be able to include more of the story because they’ll have more screen time – a lot more than the films had. I’ll be interested. I haven’t had the call yet!”

Asked whether it felt strange to see a new adaptation in the works, Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy, mused: “It’s no weirder for me than for everybody else who’s seen the films. I happen to be in the films too.”

He continued: “They make a new Spider-Man every 15 minutes. You know, there was a ton of stuff in the books that we left out. Yeah, it’s an odd feeling, but it’s no odder for me than it is anyone else. I can’t wait to see them and see what they do.”

Behind the camera, we know that His Dark Materials writer Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner, while Succession director Mark Mylod is attached to produce and film some episodes.

Meanwhile, JK Rowling will executive produce the series, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” said Rowling.

Who is playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter series?

The actor who will be playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter HBO series hasn’t been revealed just yet, but well-known contenders like Matthew Macfadyen, Matt Smith, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hiddleston are in the running, according to Online Betting Guide.

However, known entertainment industry leaker Daniel Richtman recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Harry Potter TV show is “auditioning both men and women for Voldemort”, so there is a chance Tom Riddle could be portrayed by a female.

There is no confirmation of either claim yet, but we will be updating this guide as soon as we hear more.

What is the Harry Potter TV series about?

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Jones first voiced Dobby the House Elf in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Warner Bros

The series will be based on all seven books in the series, originally published between 1997 and 2007.

A statement from the newly branded Max explained: “The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for.

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

It continued: “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

The Harry Potter series will stream on HBO Max.

Scores, Performances, and Reviews for TikTok Night

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

[WARNING: This post contains MAJOR spoilers from Dancing With the Stars Season 34, Week 3.]

The competition is getting even more intense during Episode 3 of Dancing With the Stars Season 34. During the Tuesday, September 30, episode, the remaining 12 pairs hit the dance floor once again to perform routines to songs that have gone viral on TikTok. Judges Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli offered their critiques and gave the contestants their scores.

One person will be eliminated at the end of the episode based on viewer votes and the judges’ scores. Follow along as we live blog all of the performances and reveal the scores. Keep checking back as we update throughout the episode!

Jen Affleck — 19/30

For her Week 3 cha-cha-cha, Jen Affleck performed to “She’s a Bad Mama Jama,” which is the same song she previously went viral for dancing to on TikTok. She threw it back to that viral video by starting the routine wearing a fake baby bump and hospital gown, then ripping it off to show off her sexy gold costume.

“Mamma mia! That was an easy delivery, wasn’t it? In, out, cha-cha-cha-, down, next! I’ve never quite seen anything like it, I have to say,” Tonioli said. However, he said Affleck needed a little bit more foot action and to be a bit “cleaner on the finish.” Inaba gushed, “You are such a hottie!” and said it was “so impressive” that she did that routine so soon after pregnancy. “But, there’s a little bit hyperextension going on in some of your moves,” she added.

Hough concluded the critiques by telling Affleck she gave a “great performance,” and warned her she needed to have straight legs and the “proper Cuban motion” in this particular dance. “Overall, I think your performance is starting to evolve and come out,” he concluded. Inaba gave the routine a 7, but Tonioli and Hough scored Affleck with 6s.

Lauren Jauregui — 18/30

Lauren Jauregui hit the dance floor next with a cha-cha-cha to her band Fifth Harmony’s song “Work From Home.” Of course, they threw in some original 5H choreography to the routine, as well.

“The way you move, I really like the way you move, you’re very in tune with your body,” Inaba said. “I want to see a lot more pop in your step. I just want you to hit certain things harder. I want more dynamics. I think you have it in you.” Hough said there’s “something beautiful” about the way Jauregui moves, but agreed with Inaba’s comments that she needs more “power” in her Latin moves.

“They’re absolutely right,” Tonioli added. “You have a wonderful lyrical quality. When you dance Latin … sometimes you have to hit the beat. Flow your body as you would do with your voice.” She received 6s from all three judges, which was down from last week.

Danielle Fishel — 21/30

After getting her first 7 last week, Danielle Fishel had even more to prove this time around (especially since she’s battling an injury). She performed a foxtrot to “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter, her former Girl Meets World costar.

“You’re just so pleasant and refreshing. There’s a simplicity and a grace when you dance,” Hough said. “The control and the foxtrot fundamentals, thank you so much. One note tonight is that when you use your arms, use it from your ribcage. An extension from your ribcage. So your whole body moves.”

Toniolo praised Fishel for taking his past advice about watching her shoulders. He called the dance “lovely” and “elegant,” adding, “The TikTok did not take away from the style of the dance. It was incorporated beautifully.” Inaba agreed with her fellow judges and said the routine was “very beautiful,” but told Fishel she can “work a little bit on [her] body contact” in the future. She improved from her scores last week, earning 7s with all of the judges.

Jordan Chiles — 24/30

After her major improvements last week, Jordan Chiles returned with a tango to “Anxiety.” The response to the “really hard” routine was so overwhelming that Chiles got emotional afterwards.

“Don’t cry, your improvement has been astonishing. My baby has transformed into a stalking panther! Clean, clear, powerful, focused. Your best dance yet,” Tonioli raved. Inaba thanked Chiles for sharing her own story with anxiety. “That was an example of how to be smooth and fierce. Amazing again, my friend,” she added. Hough said he was “really impressed” with how Chiles kept her frame, despite her height difference with Sosa.

For the powerful routine, Chiles earned 8s from all three judges. The highest scores of the season so far!

Dylan Efron — 23/30

Dylan Efron’s dance this week was a foxtrot to Justin Bieber’s “Yukon.”

“I’m having a hard time scoring this. I am torn,” Inaba said. “There’s a beginner level group and then the advanced, showman entertain group. You are like the beginner group, but you are really learning the technique, and that’s the key to winning this season, in particular. You are really learning the technique.” Hough called the foxtrot “smooth as silk” and said he was impressed by Efron’s “control” and “stride” in the dance. “We do not see that. That was exceptional,” he raved.

Tonioli concluded the comments by calling Efron “smoldering” and said technically the dance was very impressive. Tonioli and Hough both gave Efron 8s, while Inaba scored the dance a 7, giving him his highest score yet.

What The Dark Hearts Are Based On

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Initially, the Dark Hearts, the fictional drug-dealing biker gang in the new HBO miniseries “Task,” was born out of plot necessity. As IndieWire previously covered, the narrative structure of “Task” was inspired by Michael Mann’s 1995 crime classic “Heat,” placing its audience in the position of rooting for both FBI Agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and the thief, Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), he is chasing.

“Robbie’s a good guy, and I always saw him as a good guy, and Pelphrey saw him as a good guy, so we needed someone to add danger to the story. It was a plot need early on,” said “Task” creator Brad Ingelsby on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast when discussing the origins of the Dark Hearts. “So, who’s closing in the walls around Robbie? The audience needed to be scared, and eventually you have to have a bad guy come in and the audience go, ‘Oh crap.’”

Glen Powell in 'Chad Powers,' the new Hulu series

One of the reasons “Task” is a success is that while it leans into conventions of the crime genre with tropes including a “Sons of Anarchy”-like biker gang, it is grounded in reality and regional specificity. Growing up 30 minutes outside Philadelphia in Chester County, just a stone’s throw away from Delaware County where “Task” is set, Ingelsby had heard tales of the legendary motorcycle club The Warlocks, but as he started to do his research to flesh out the details of his Dark Hearts bikers, he hit a wall.

“All the cops and detectives we talked to were like, ‘Dude, they’re all druggies. They’re all just selling so they can get high. And there wasn’t a loyalty, there’s no code,’” said Ingelsby. “And yet I didn’t want to lean into that stereotypical [gang].”

While the ruthless Dark Hearts were born of the need for an antagonistic force, Ingelsby wanted them to have the same complexity as his other characters, and for the audience to understand, if not sympathize with, the pressures being placed on the father-son-like relationship between Perry (Jamie McShane) and Jayson (Sam Keeley).

“In the early drafts, the bikers didn’t work as well, and Brad knew it,” said “Task” executive producer and director Jeremiah Zagar, who collaborated with Ingelsby in developing the project. “I felt like [what] was missing was the realism of that biker gang, and what they did, the specificity of how they did it, and the specificity of culture.”

When Zagar and his producing partner, Jeremy Yaches, came aboard “Task,” they started to help the research-driven creator find consultants who went beyond law enforcement’s narrow view of the regional MCs. It was during this period that Zagar, who grew up in South Philly, received an unexpected phone call from a friend he hadn’t spoken with in nearly 20 years.

“He was my closest friend growing up, my best friend when I was a kid. We basically lived together, and he moved in with my family for a summer. The closest thing I had to family that wasn’t blood,” said Zagar. “I hadn’t talked to him in forever and he said, ‘I’m a recovering drug addict, I’m involved with the church, [but] I was in this biker gang for years and all that’s over now.” And I said, ‘This is so crazy. I’m doing a show about a biker gang, do you want be a consultant on the show?’”

At the time “Task” was still being written, Zagar’s friend had reservations about officially consulting due to his pending legal matters stemming from his biker days, and decided to do so “somewhat undercover.” Those legal problems, though, are now resolved: His name, Carim Mow, officially appears in the “Task” credits, and IndieWire has been granted permission to print his name in this article, as his role in helping Ingelsby crack the Dark Hearts was invaluable.

‘Task’

“He expressed a love for this culture in this community, a sense of brotherhood and purpose that we didn’t get from the cops because he was inside that gang, and those were his family,” said Zagar of Mow’s contribution. Added Ingelsby, “We leaned on him a lot, throughout the series… He was such a great resource to call and go, ‘Hey man, here’s what we’ve written. You make it better. Tell us what’s not real and what’s real, and we’ll change anything.’”

The level of specificity mattered and went beyond Ingelsby’s scripts. Mow, who was a presence on set, also aided Zagar, his crew, and the cast in bringing authenticity to the gang’s relationship to motorcycles, guns, and drugs.

“When he spoke to the actors about the guns that they use or the drugs that they sold, or the way they sold those drugs, why they did that, and how they did it, was with such specificity and knowledge and intimacy. And I think it made the show great and I think it made those characters so great,” said Zagar. “And it was really cool — it was a moving way for me and my friend to reconnect.”

Episode 5 of “Task” airs on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, October 5.

Hollywood’s Top Agencies Asked To Boycott NYC Hotel

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Many of the major talent agencies across New York and Los Angeles, including the likes of CAA, WME and UTA, were hit with a letter Tuesday asking agents and their clients to boycott the Surrey Hotel in New York City, at least for now.

The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, the union that represents about 40,000 hotel and gaming workers across New York and New Jersey, sent the letter over an ongoing labor dispute with the Surrey’s management.

In it, the HTC asks agents and their clients not only to refrain from booking a stay at the Surrey for the time being but also “consider how your voice, values, and visibility might support workers at this moment.”

Read the letter in full below.

The ongoing dispute began in 2020 when, after the Surrey was forced into bankruptcy, the hotel closed for several years as it changed ownership and underwent renovations before reopening in 2024 under the management of Corinthia Hotels. HTC President Rich Maroko tells Deadline that, in the process, about 100 union hotel workers lost their jobs and were not offered the chance to return upon the hotel’s reopening.

“We tried to get them the list of [former] workers on several occasions, and they just ignored us,” Maroko says. “They chose not to interview any of them and not to hire any of them, and instead hired an entirely new workforce, with few exceptions.”

Maroko also says that the current staff is being paid “significantly less than what they would get if they were unionized, upwards of $10 an hour less, with no benefits or job protections or any of the rest of it.”

In addition to healthcare and pensions, the HTC contracts “provide a middle class living for our members,” Maroko says. While pay ranges depending on exact position, collective bargaining agreements across New York City hotels have secured upward of $40/hour for some positions, including room attendants.

Maroko posits that not only are Corinthia’s current actions unfair, it’s also against the local law. In 2020, New York City passed the Displaced Hotel Service Workers Act, which requires new hotel owners to offer employment to the seller’s hotel workers for at least 90 days after the sale or transfer of ownership.

Deadline understands the HTC has also filed a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board against the management of the swanky hotel. The workers, many of whom are seeking to retain their jobs, have filed a lawsuit against the Surrey as well.

The plea to the agencies is a calculated one, given the hotel’s reputation as a hot spot for A-listers and other media figures, as well as a popular event space. The Surrey has long been known to service celebrities and other high-profile clientele, with nightly room rates starting around $1,000.

“We know that significant portion of their clientele are in the entertainment and media industries, and a lot of them end up going to the hotel without having any idea about who these owners are, who the management company is, or the dispute, and we think that if they did, they would not be” staying at the hotel, Maroko says. “We’re actually quite hopeful that they would be supportive of the one hundred or so workers that find themselves on the street because of the hotel’s actions.”

Deadline has reached out to Corinthia Hotels for comment on the matter. This post will be updated if/when management responds.

The HTC has also planned several in-person actions so far, including a rally outside of the hotel with several hundred union members as well as some local politicians like mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. They also held a rally around the Met Gala as well as other events where hotel management is expected.

There are more in-person actions to come, Maroko assures.

“If you were to hear in detail the stories of some of these workers that are out on the street now, it would really break your heart. In some cases, gave 30 years of their lives to this hotel,” Maroko said. “It’s really heartbreaking that these folks that have spent decades and decades working for the hotel and serving the guests there have been treated so, so callously.”

Here is the letter sent to the agencies in full:

I’m reaching out on behalf of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (HTC), the union for hotel and gaming workers in New York and New Jersey. As the respected representatives of some of entertainment’s biggest names, I wanted to make you aware of an issue of gross injustice occurring at the Surrey Hotel in New York City.

We understand many of your clients have either stayed or participated in events at the Surrey, and we come to you on behalf of nearly 100 former employees of the hotel who are fighting to get their jobs back.

While the Surrey Hotel has a tremendous reputation throughout New York City, behind its façade of class and elegance exists a troubling picture of exploitation.

Prior to its closure in 2020, the Surrey operated as a union hotel for decades, with nearly 100 union- represented employees—many of them women, immigrants, and people of color.

When the hotel reopened under new ownership and management in late 2024, nearly all the original workers were not offered their jobs back, despite their years of service and the existence of a New York City law—the Displaced Hotel Service Workers Act—which requires hotels to retain existing staff following a change in control.

Nearly all of the former Surrey workers were denied the opportunity to return to their jobs.

Wages have been slashed. In some departments, such as in-room dining, wages have been cut nearly in half. Housekeepers at the property are getting paid over $10 an hour less than their union-represented counterparts in New York City.

The hotel brought in a subcontracting agency, MevRam, to run housekeeping. Subcontracting agencies are known for pressuring workers to cut corners, unsanitary conditions, wage theft, and other health and safety issues.

The former Surrey workers have banded together and filed a lawsuit in response. The workers seek to return to their jobs at the Surrey, and we ask that your clients join us in supporting them in their struggle.

We see this as a moment of education and coalition building with the clientele that allow The Surrey Hotel to thrive. We have three simple asks:

1. As you plan New York City travel for your clients, we ask that you do not stay at the Surrey Hotel and look into the many union hotels in New York. For your convenience, a list can be found here.

2. We also understand that the individuals or brands that your firm represents may already be staying at or affiliated with the Surrey Hotel, and we hope you will consider how your voice, values, and visibility might support workers at this moment.

3. Finally, if you have a client who would be interested in expressing support for the fair treatment and the right for these workers to return to the Surrey, we would be happy to speak with you about the issue and send you more information.

We will continue to show our support publicly for these workers through protests, social media campaigns and more, for however long it takes. If you show your support, we will be there to cheer you on and show our appreciation.

These workers are not asking for special treatment—they are asking for what the law provides and what basic decency demands. We believe in the power of coalition building, and we hope to work in partnership with you until the former Surrey workers have the opportunity to return to their jobs.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

In Solidarity,
Rich Maroko
President of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, AFL-CIO

Operatic Spanish Content, ‘Culpa Nuestra’: Banijay at Iberseries

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Steve Matthews is attending the fifth edition of Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid this week to bring a taste of superindie Banijay Entertainment, the France-headquartered international content production and distribution giant behind such hits as Survivor, Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, MasterChef and Big Brother, to the gathering for Spanish- and Portuguese-language content producers and other attendees.

Hired in early 2023 as content partnerships executive in the company’s central scripted department, the former executive of Octagon Films in Dublin and consulting producer on all three seasons of Showtime’s The Borgias was promoted to the role of head of scripted, creative — partnered with Johannes Jensen as head of scripted, business — in January.

In a Tuesday “Spotlight: Banijay” session, Matthews and Pilar Blasco, CEO of Banijay Iberia, will share insight into their content strategy and collaborations across markets.

Ahead of his Iberseries appearance, Matthews talked to THR about the appeal of Spanish-language content, its “operatic” quality, Banijay’s Spanish hits and what’s next.

Spanish-language content has, in recent years, shown such broad appeal around the world. How does it fit into Banijay’s scripted strategy?

At Banijay, we’re doing 1,000 hours across 60 labels as the biggest scripted producer in Europe. I have this helicopter analogy, which still prevails. There are now more people in the helicopter, and we’re a little bit tighter and a little bit more disciplined on what the helicopter is there to do. But the helicopter flies to a production banner, and we open the door and ask if they need anything. If they do, we try to help. If they don’t, we go on to the next banner.

So, to stick with this metaphor, we go across the labels, we open the door, we look down, and we say: “Hi, guys. Do you need some help with a tax incentive? Do you need some help getting that agent in New York to call you back about that book? Do you need me to help you set up a writer’s room? Do you need help to get that French format?

Banijay has made a very big thing out of lots of little things. So the game and strategy is all about maintaining the ability of the production companies to work in their markets, tell the stories that they’re specialists in, maintain their creative identities, and not get in the way too much, but help and connect if we can. It’s about [managing] the whole scale of it.

English-language content has certain advantages. The U.K. remains our biggest territory, but Spain and Italy are close behind.

There are four primary scripted companies that we have in Spain. There’s Pokeepsie Films, founded by [director, screenwriter and producer] Álex de la Iglesia, who I love, having already done 30 Coins with him. He makes big, bold, theatrical stuff. We also have Diagonal TV, which has done great premium stuff, such as The Patients of Dr. García. There’s Dlo [Producciones], which produces brilliant genre content, such as [Netflix series] The Gardener. And there is the lovely Portcabo up in Galicia, which is doing unpretentious, excellent, well-crafted crime stuff. So, our Spanish production businesses are not a homogeneous thing. It’s not just one thing, and I think that’s how it’s kind of endured.

What do you see as the drivers behind the global success of Spanish content in recent years?

For the rise of Spain over the last 10 years, distribution comes in. A third of the world speaks Spanish. So there’s an automatic advantage there for Spanish content. Also, in Spain, the regulatory environment is great, there is an excellent tax systems. All of these are conducive to encouraging the excellent storytelling in Spain.

It’s a pretentious thing to say, but I think any movement in art usually has elements of finance or technology. However, I think it’s never just that. There’s also been a burst of storytelling that’s come out of Spain. When I first started in Spain in 2016, I was reading scripts and saying to a colleague, “These scripts, they don’t have any subtext. And he said: “You don’t understand, Steve, we don’t have subtext.” And I said, “Oh, I see, you write in a different way.” There’s no ”set it up really slowly and hold back the motivations.” At the start of a Spanish story, you just go. You go to the front of the stage and sing.

It’s not like Tony Soprano where you wonder: “Is he happy or is he sad?” There’s something operatic in Spanish storytelling. And I think that’s something that has fit these times — of people wanting something a little bit less pretentious, a little bit brash. There’s an operatic storytelling that just fits the time.

That may explain why I have noticed friends getting fully drawn in and really caring about characters in more and more Spanish dramas. One recently mentioned that years ago they used to watch a Spanish show only here and there for the sun and fun and, I hate to say it, the pretty people. I wonder if more opportunities to watch such content has allowed a fan base to go deeper and look beyond the surface?

Yes, you can go beyond Spain to Mexico and Latin America and the telenovela. I have watched some of the shows from our colleagues in Brazil. With the telenovela, it’s wrong to think of it as bright and colorful, just pretty people, and that’s the only reason you watch. It does have all of those things, but it’s also got a joyful operatic story. Otherwise, you wouldn’t sit and watch 40 episodes of it.

So, pretty people and sunshine are a superficial symptom of something much deeper. I love working with these guys. They are great and have this boldness as well. As things were already slowing down and a bubble was about to burst heading into the run-up to 2020, I was working with Alex, and these scripts were coming through. Reading them, I was like: “We can’t do this, can we?” And you know, you’re in a good place when you’re reading a script, thinking that, and they are letting us do this. There’s a confidence there. And there’s a naughtiness about them as well, which I think is good.

‘The Gardener’

Since we just mentioned Latin America, and co-productions have been one key topic at Iberseries & Platino Industry, are there co-productions between Banijay production banners in Spain and Latin America in the works?

Over the last two to three years, co-production is very much back on the table, and you find it’s the Swedes, the Dutch, the Central Europeans. It’s the smaller companies and markets that have a kind of memory for what it was like before the streaming boom, because they have to as there isn’t enough money like in the bigger territories, which sometimes stay a little bit more within themselves.

However, that’s one of the things that we’re building. Are there a lot of developments between Spain and Europe and Latin America? No, not as many as I would like to see. But equally, it’s a mistake to assume that they are the exact same countries just because they share a language. Because their Spanish is actually different, and Brazil is, of course, Portuguese, so it’s a completely different language, a completely different thing. So you can make a kind of lazy assumption. But it’s not quite as simple as that. And that’s the game for us. It’s really about how much to push in, how much to encourage? How much glue should there be between the whole thing to get the balance correct?

What are some of the Spanish Banijay shows you can highlight?

The big one really is the third in the Culpa trilogy, which comes out [on Prime] soon from Pokeepsie. So that’s been for us, a really good example of a new [hit] from a company known for horror and psychological thrillers. I think the success comes from how they have worked with the same kind of theatricality. That is why they have been so successful. So that’s the big one coming up.

We’re also very happy with an important show for us, even though it’s relatively small compared to the scale of the stuff from Pokeepsie. Weiss & Morales is made by Portocabo. It is a cop show that we’re proud of because it’s a pure, old-fashioned, two-territory co-production with ZDF in Germany and RTVE in Spain. It’s a German cop and a Spanish cop investigating crimes. Again, it’s unpretentious, and there’s a lot of business entrepreneurialism there as well.

‘Weiss & Morales’

And Dlo has [psychological thriller series] La Caza, which has traveled to France and had remakes.

You know what I love about Spain? It’s not stuck. They do their book adaptations, but also more. Diagonal did Dr. García and those literary and historical things, but then Dlo did The Gardener, a cracking little contemporary psychological thriller with all this kind of Hitchcockian vibe to it, a big show on Netflix.

And there’s more coming from all those guys.

Beyond your on-stage appearance, any other big plans for Iberseries and Madrid?

They have asked me to meet with some young writers. I always meet with young writers and really read their pitches, so I’ll do some of those sessions. I take opportunities to be on the road, and I use those very much for face time with the labels. We’re very spread out, so the more we get to know each other, the better.

We do lots of panels and talks and discussions and pitches and showcases, but we also all get together and say, “Hey, you’ve got a thriller. Have you met the guys from the Nordics? These guys have got a great idea.” There are two projects in development right now between territories, which came entirely out of that. So I take any opportunity to go and see them and ask: “What do you need? What are you working on? Can I help you with that?”
