Coldplay asked fans to “send love” to conservative activist Charlie Kirk during their concert at London’s Wembley Stadium Friday night. Prior to the band’s performance of “Fix You,” frontman Chris Martin encouraged the audience to raise their hands and “send love anywhere you wanna send it in the world. There are so many places that might need it today.”

“You can send this to your brother or your sister, you can send it to the families of people who have been going through terrible stuff, you can send it to Charlie Kirk’s family,” Martin continued. “You can send it to people you disagree with, but you send them love anyway… You can send it to peaceful people in the Middle East, in Ukraine and Russia.”

Kirk was shot an killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. A 22-year-old Utah native identified as Tyler Robinson has since been arrested and charged with suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice.

If you know one thing about The Diplomats, the crew didn’t just have Hip-Hop on lock. The group’s influential legacy created a cultural movement and set trends in fashion, with their unapologetically flashy style. With New York Fashion Week (NYFW) taking the Big Apple by storm, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana reunited for the limited-edition launch of their eyewear with Vintage Frames Company.

On Wednesday night (Sept. 10), Hip-Hop and fashion lovers rolled through New York City’s ESSX to get a peek at the collaborative black sunglasses. As the Martell Dipset-inspired cocktails flowed, DJ Statik Selektah set the vibe on the ones and twos. ASAP Ferg, Fabolous, Maino, FoodGod, Laura Stylez, Jonathan Mannion, Ty Hunter, Kid Super, and Vandythepink were among the noteable attendees. To top off the occasion, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana tagged-teamed for a Dipset performance with DJ Self.

Jeff Tweedy Shares Video for New Song “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter”: Watch

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Jeff Tweedy is sharing one last single before he releases his new album, Twilight Override, on September 26. “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter” comes with a music video by director Austin Vesely that captures Tweedy and his bandmates playing a basement show. Watch it below.

“Lou Reed Was My Babysitter” is about “the joy in this dark music that Lou Reed made, and the beautiful conflict that it creates when you try and analyze it,” Tweedy said in a statement. “And how it was such a positive force for so many people. ‘My life was saved by rock’n’roll’—Lou Reed is saying the same thing. I was babysat by fucking Lou Reed, literally, in my bedroom as a 10-year-old, 12-year-old kid. His music was a more legitimate mentor to me than most of my teachers.”

Tweedy announced Twilight Override in July. The Wilco frontman has shared numerous tracks from the album, including “Enough,” “One Tiny Flower,” “Out in the Dark,” “Stray Cats in Spain,” and “Feel Free.”

There are more than 40 songs this year as usual, so be sure to keep an eye out for what could become your new favourite dance routine.

The series is having a party this year, as a brand new ‘party mode’ is being introduced that focuses on co-op play, hoping to expand a lot of the improvements and work that has been done in this area over recent years.

Interestingly, this year’s entry isn’t coming to Nintendo Switch 2, only releasing on the original Switch, but we could see a port shortly after launch, given the popularity of the new console. Some work may still be needed to improve the tracking on the new Joy-Con controllers, as well.

We will keep this article updated weekly as new sets of songs are announced. Just Dance 2026 releases on October 14, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.

Taylor Swift Deposition Ruled Off Limits to Justin Baldoni

Taylor Swift Deposition Ruled Off Limits to Justin Baldoni

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

A federal judge has denied Justin Baldoni’s last-minute bid to depose Taylor Swift as he prepares for an upcoming trial over Blake Lively’s claims she was sexually harassed and retaliated against during the filming of It Ends With Us.

In an order handed down Friday, U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman ruled that Baldoni and his co-defendants at Wayfarer Studios simply waited too long to seek the sit-down and missed their chance. The judge did, however, grant a 10-day extension for Lively to take the depositions of Baldoni and two others. He said the defendants dragged their feet in producing the requested documents, so Lively and her lawyers deserved the extra time to prepare. In the case of Swift, the judge said Baldoni and Wayfarer failed to show “good cause” to justify a similar reprieve.

“The only justification [Baldoni and the Wayfarer parties] have provided for the extension is their assertion that Swift’s preexisting professional obligations now prevent her from appearing for a deposition prior to October 20, 2025,” Judge Liman wrote. “Importantly, however, the Wayfarer parties have provided no discussion of when they began attempting to schedule the deposition. Discovery has been ongoing in this case for approximately six months.”

The judge noted that Baldoni previously requested Swift’s deposition in May 2025 before ultimately withdrawing that subpoena. “They have offered no evidence that they have served a renewed subpoena on Swift. Thus, at most, the Wayfarer parties have demonstrated that scheduling the deposition now presents logistical difficulties; that does not answer the question of why the deposition could not have been conducted earlier,” he wrote. “Having failed to demonstrate appropriate diligence, the requested extension is denied.”

The judge’s order followed after Baldoni’s lawyer, Ellyn S. Garofalo, claimed in a letter to the court filed Thursday that Swift had “agreed” to appear for deposition but was unable to do so before Oct. 20. The letter requested an extension of the Sept. 30 discovery deadline to accommodate Swift’s schedule.

Editor’s picks

On Friday, Swift’s lawyer stepped into the fray to set the record straight, refuting the claim that his client had agreed to answer questions under oath.

“As counsel for the parties know, since the inception of this matter, we have consistently maintained that my client has no material role in this action,” Swift’s lawyer J. Douglas Baldridge wrote in a letter to the judge filed in Manhattan federal court. He was clear that Swift “did not agree to a deposition,” but if she was “forced,” she had informed Baldoni’s camp that her schedule was too busy to accommodate it before October 20. Baldridge didn’t explain what the conflict was, but Swift has been a little busy lately, getting engaged to Travis Kelce and preparing for the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, set to debut Oct. 3.

Lively, 38, is suing Baldoni, 41, and Wayfarer Studios with claims Baldoni subjected her to “disturbing” sexual harassment during production of It Ends With Us and then engaged in a retaliatory campaign to “eviscerate” her credibility. Lively alleges the harassment included an incident during the filming of a slow dance where no sound was recorded. She says Baldoni improvised a scene where he “leaned forward and slowly dragged his lips from her ear and down her neck as he said, ‘It smells so good.’” Lively alleges Baldoni also tried to add a graphic sex scene where their characters would climax together on their wedding night. She says Baldoni then “intrusively” asked her if she and her husband, the actor Ryan Reynolds, climaxed simultaneously during intercourse.

Swift was initially ensnared in the fight when Baldoni filed a dueling defamation lawsuit against Lively that included claims Swift was present during a pivotal meeting at Lively’s Tribeca penthouse that involved Lively’s efforts to make changes to the movie script.

Related Content

In a separate response letter filed Friday, before the judge’s ruling, one of Lively’s lawyers blasted Baldoni’s camp for an “astounding” lack of respect for “Swift’s privacy and schedule.” The lawyer urged the court to deny Baldoni’s request for the late deposition.

“The Wayfarer defendants have repeatedly sought to bring Ms. Swift into this litigation to fuel their relentless media strategy. In this latest effort, the Wayfarer defendants assert – though, notably, without evidence – that Ms. Swift has supposedly ‘agreed’ to sit for a deposition sometime between October 20-25, some three weeks after the close of fact discovery in this matter,” Lively’s lawyer Michael J. Gottlieb wrote in his opposition.

“Ms. Swift is someone whose calendar should be presumed to be packed with professional obligations for months in advance,” he continued. “At any point over the past six months, the Wayfarer defendants could have noticed a deposition, served a subpoena, and negotiated an agreeable time and place for this deposition. But they did not. Instead, the Wayfarer Defendants previously noticed Ms. Swift’s deposition in May 2025, accompanied by a barrage of press stories covering the same, only to withdraw that subpoena to much fanfare.”

Gottlieb claimed Baldoni and Wayfarer did “not even attempt to explain their need for [Swift’s] deposition.” He further accused them of trying “to generate a media spectacle in this matter.”

Swift had a very public friendship with Lively prior to the legal war, but they have not been seen together in months. In his court filings, Baldoni claimed that Swift — originally identified only as “megacelebrity” — supported Lively’s edits to the movie script, as did Reynolds. Baldoni said after the penthouse meeting, Lively sent him a text message referring to Swift and Reynolds as her “dragons.” Baldoni said he interpreted the message as a suggestion Lively could tap Swift to “make things very difficult for him.”

“If you ever get around to watching Game of Thrones, you’ll appreciate that I’m Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have a few dragons,” the purported text from Lively read. “For better or worse, but usually better. Because my dragons also protect those I fight for. So really we all benefit from those gorgeous monsters of mine. You will too, I can promise you.”

Trending Stories

Back in May, a rep for Swift slammed Baldoni’s initial attempts to subpoena the singer. “Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she never saw an edit or made any notes on the film,” the rep previously told Rolling Stone. The rep said the subpoena was “designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.”

Lively’s battle with Baldoni first made headlines last year when The New York Times published a Dec. 21 story titled “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine.” The story revealed Lively had filed a precursor complaint against Baldoni with the California Civil Rights Department.

Snubs & Surprises at 2025 Caribbean Music Awards: Chronic Law Shut Out

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Although Shenseea dominated the night with five wins, including dancehall album, collaboration and song of the year, the third annual Caribbean Music Awards certainly spread the wealth. Hosted by Majah Hype at Brooklyn’s King Theatre (Aug. 28), this year’s Caribbean Music Awards honored performers and works across reggae, dancehall, soca, R&B, gospel, bouyon, zess-steam, konpa and more, highlighting the myriad styles that have helped Caribbean music and culture remain a global force.

Thanks to his collaborations with Shenseea (“Hit & Run”) and Romain Virgo (“Been There Before”), Masicka was the second most-awarded artist of the night with four trophies. Nearly every artist who earned at least three nominations took home something, except for Nailah Blackman, Chronic Law, Kranium, Bunji Garlin, Problem Child, Trinidad Killa and Jada Kingdom — all of whom were completely shut out. Notably, all three of last year’s female artist of the year winners repeated in their respective categories, with Shenseea taking home the dancehall honor, Lila Iké snagging the reggae award and Patrice Roberts winning the soca trophy for a third consecutive year.

In addition to over 40 competitive awards, several Caribbean music legends were honored for their towering contributions to the culture. DJ Khaled and Swizz Beatz honored Bounty Killer with the lifetime achievement award, Mýa presented Sizzla with the humanitarian award, and Buju Banton celebrated Busta Rhymes with the elite icon award. Additional special honorees included Austin “Super Blue” Lyons (calypso honors), Kerwin Du Bois (producer honor), Carimi (legacy award) and Shirley Ann Cyril-Mayers (gospel honors).

Here are six of the biggest snubs and surprises from the 2025 Caribbean Music Awards.

  • SNUB: Chronic Law

From spinning out hits like “NY Girls” to his ongoing clash with Malie Donn, Chronic Law has been one of the buzziest names in dancehall over the past year. His slick lyricism and slinky melodies have garnered him a faithful fanbase, and, according to Jamaica Observer, he was the most-streamed artist of 2024 in JA on YouTube with over 163 million views.

All that is to say, it was quite shocking to see Chronic lose all five of his nominations. The St. Thomas-bred star earned nods for dancehall collaboration of the year (“Higher Life,” with Kranium and “St. Thomas Native,” with Popcaan), dancehall song of the year (“Higher Life”), reggae/dancehall video of the year (“Higher Life”), and male dancehall artist of the year.

Considering Shenseea, Masicka and Di Genius’ “Hit & Run” swept every category that “Higher Life” was nominated in, Chronic’s best shot at a win was in male dancehall artist of the year, where he was unfortunately up against the legendary Vybz Kartel in his comeback year. Nonetheless, Chronic Law deserved to go home with something.

  • SURPRISE: Rutshelle Guillaume Beats Out Joé Dwèt Filé for Konpa Honor

Joé Dwèt Filé earned a global konpa smash — and a Burna Boy remix! — with “4 Kampé,” and that should have been enough to push him over the finish line in the race for konpa artist/band of the year.

Nonetheless, Rutshelle Guillaume, who earned a top 10 hit on World Digital Song Sales last year alongside Michaël Brun and John Legend (“Safe,” No. 6), emerged victorious. All was not lost for Filé, however, considering he took home French-Caribbean artist of the year, beating out stiff competitors like Maureen and Blaiz Faiyah.

  • SNUB: Bunji Garlin

Let’s be real: “Carnival Contract” alone should have secured Trinbagonian soca superstar Bunji Garlin at least one win. And that’s not to mention “Carry It” and “Thousand,” which placed second and third at Trinidad’s 2025 Road March competition, respectively. Even Nicki Minaj hopped on a remix of “Carry It!”

Despite four nominations — soca song of the year (“Carnival Contract”), male soca artist of the year, soca video of the year (“Carnival Contract”) and soca performer of the year – Bunji came up short in every single race. If we had to choose one category for him to win, male soca artist of the year would have been well-deserved — and Kes would still have taken home soca performer of the year!

  • SURPRISE: Trinidad Killa Shut Out Despite Major Chart Success

A select few soca stars made a resounding international impact this year, and Trinidad Killa was unquestionably a part of that crop. At the top of the year, he teamed up with fellow Trinbagonian Nicki Minaj for a remix to his hit “Eskimo,” which reached No. 2 on World Digital Song Sales this spring (chart dated March 15). He later appeared on Billboard’s monthly Reggae/Dancehall Fresh Picks column with the DJ Big Skipp and Moyann-assisted “Enjoy Yourself.”

This year, Killa earned nominations for zess-steam artist of the year, the 2025 soca impact award, and best new soca artist. Realistically, no one was going to beat out Yung Bredda for the impact award, nor was anyone going to best Lady Lava for zess-steam artist of the year. Nonetheless, one would think the Barbz would rally around Killa for best new soca artist.

  • SNUB: Jada Kingdom

After heating up the dancehall space at the top of 2024 with her clash against Stefflon Don, Jada Kingdom unleashed one of the year’s most popular dancehall hits in “What’s Up (Big Buddy),” which earned a nod for dancehall song of the year. Also nominated alongside Govana for “Pull Over” (dancehall collaboration of the year), Twinkle was unfortunately shut out at this year’s ceremony.

Truthfully, this was Shenseea’s year, and Jada was up against her in all three of her races. It’s hard to say which category she had the strongest odds in, but it would have been nice to see Jada get some kind of award recognition this year.

  • SURPRISE: Buju Banton, Bugle & Damian Marley Win Reggae Collaboration of the Year

On paper, this win wasn’t too much of a surprise; Buju, Bugle and Marley are three of the most lauded voices in contemporary reggae music.

But this was a very stacked category. Romain Virgo and Masicka’s “Been There Before” was a formidable competitor (and probably a more deserving winner), and considering both Virgo and Masicka won multiple awards this year, a triumph in this category definitely wasn’t out of the question. Three-time reggae female artist of the year winner Lila Iké was also nominated twice in this category, but she likely split her votes between “Fry Plantain” (with Joey Bada$$) and “Bruises” (with Mortimer and Kabaka Pyramid). The final nominee, Imeru Tafari’s Queen Ifrica-assisted “I Love Rastafari,” also had some steam, especially since Tafari was additionally nominated for the 2025 reggae impact award.

All in all, the triumvirate of Buju, Bugle and Marley proved unbeatable in this year’s reggae collaboration of the year race.

Daniel Day-Lewis "Never Intended" Retirement from Acting

Daniel Day-Lewis “Never Intended” Retirement from Acting

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t abandon his fans! That’s right, cinephiles, the elusive actor told Rolling Stone in a new interview that, despite earlier comments (and a genuine break from public life), he never actually intended to retire from acting. Guess he’s not so finished after all?

The about-face came as Day-Lewis and his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, are currently promoting their upcoming film, Anemone. The thriller is both the younger Day-Lewis’ feature-length directorial debut and the Oscar winner’s first film since 2017’s excellent Phantom Thread.

“Looking back on it now — I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut, for sure,” said Daniel Day-Lewis. “It just seems like such grandiose gibberish to talk about. I never intended to retire, really. I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work. I never, you know… Apparently, I’ve been accused of retiring twice now. I never meant to retire from anything! I just wanted to work on something else for a while.”

The man who played the greatest Abraham Lincoln ever went on to say that the decision to break from acting was likely a result of his being rather stubborn.

“I have a lot of pride, and I thought, ‘If I draw a line under this, I’ll be too proud to go back on that. Because I know there’ll come a day when I’ll be tempted again. But if I’ve said I’m not doing this, I won’t do it,’” said Daniel Day-Lewis. “This just shows I’m not as proud as I like to think I am! I don’t know if any of that makes sense, David, but I do feel it’s important to restate that the love of the work itself, that has never diminished for me.”

Rolling Stone’s David Fear delved a little deeper into the subject, referencing another interview together from the early 2000s where Daniel Day-Lewis said that a question regarding his work-life balance “suggests that there is no connection between the two.” This time around, Daniel Day-Lewis explained that as he gets older, his creative work simply requires more effort and personal resources.

“As I get older, it just takes me longer and longer to find my way back to the place where the furnace is burning again. But working with Ro, that furnace just lit up,” he said. “And it was, from beginning to end, just pure joy to spend that time together with him.” Moments later, he added, “I wish you’d been around to speak on my behalf during these times and just bring that quote up then.”

When the actor announced his retirement in 2017, it sent shockwaves across Hollywood. The actor seemed to be at or near his creative peak, and Phantom Thread earned Daniel Day-Lewis a nomination for Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards. (The film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, and Best Original Score.) Complicating matters was the abrupt, semi-frigid nature of the announcement.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” read a statement from his spokesperson. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

So, then, what exactly brought Daniel Day-Lewis back into the spotlight? As already mentioned, you can thank his son and collaborator. (The Day-Lewis men also co-wrote the Anemone script together.)

“I had some residual sadness because I knew Ronan was going to go on to make films, and I was walking away from that,” said Daniel Day-Lewis. “I thought, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn’t necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production.”

While he said he had “certain reservations about being back in the public world again,” ultimately, Ronan Day-Lewis “made it pretty clear that he wasn’t going to do it if I didn’t do it.” The things we do for our kids, amirite?

“It was just kind of a low-level fear, [an] anxiety about re-engaging with the business of filmmaking,” said Daniel Day-Lewis. “The work was always something I loved. I never, ever stopped loving the work. But there were aspects of the way of life that went with it that I’d never come to terms with — from the day I started out to today.”

He added that despite his years of acting experience, this “recovery” process still takes its toll.

“There’s something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the end of it,” said Daniel Day-Lewis. “I mean, I was well acquainted with it. I understood that it was all part of the process, and that there would be a regeneration eventually. And it was only really in the last experience [Phantom Thread] that I began to feel quite strongly that maybe there wouldn’t be that regeneration anymore. That I just probably should just keep away from it, because I didn’t have anything else to offer.”

Sure, you could get upset at the irksome nature of elite creatives getting to play career ping-pong. (Especially since most of us schlubs don’t have that choice.) Similarly, you could be mad that it was the scourge of nepotism that finally got him off the couch. But at the end of the day, one of the finest actors ever to live is back doing what he does best, so that’s worthy of celebration.

As the writer already hinted at, it’s not the first time Day-Lewis has “retired.” As Variety noted, he left acting in 1997 to “become a shoemaker in Italy” following The Boxer. He only returned in 2002 with a little film called Gangs of New York. (Daniel Day-Lewis’ 2017-2025 hiatus mostly remains a mystery, and he only made one public appearance in 2024 at a Martin Scorsese tribute event.)

Anemone opens in limited release on October 3rd before an expanded schedule on October 10th. The film also stars Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, and Safia Oakley-Green. Check out the trailer below.

Russell Wilson Convinced A Dying Teen To Stick With Treatment

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Celebrities oftentimes use their fame and notoriety for positive influence, but arguably nothing ranks above helping to save a life. Ciara recently opened up about a time her husband, Russell Wilson, convinced a teenager with leukemia to stick with his treatment, an act that wound up changing his story from coming to an end.

“You talk about being able to be a part of saving someone’s life essentially, right? It’s such a gift,” the “Lose Control” singer told Power 106 Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 10. She shared the story of the New York Giants quarterback’s experience with Milton Wright, who had just half a day left to live at the time.

The singer said Wilson “convinced this kid” to stick with stem cell therapy, explaining, ”This kid did not want to try it. He had twelve hours left to live.”

In an effort to connect with the patient, Wilson opened up about losing his dad and how that has impacted his life. Ciara continued, “Russ went in and talked to him and convinced him, ‘Hey, kid,’ told him his story about losing his father, everything. Before you know it, the kid changed his mind, got up and was like, ‘I want to do it.’ Now fast forward to this kid is in the hospital telling other kids to try it.”

“It’s such a blessing and we’re just really big on encouraging people to have a ‘why not you’ attitude because we still have to tap into that ourselves. We know the power of that, right? Why not you? It’s real special to us, real near and dear to our hearts.”

Wilson’s father, Harrison, died in 2010 at age of 55 from diabetes complications.

The football player wrote about his side of the story in 2016 for The Player’s Tribune. He reflected on how his father had lost his ability to walk and see, but when doctors told him he had 24 hours left to live, “he kept on fighting for two more years.”

“I told Milton to keep fighting like my dad did,” Wilson wrote. Wright went into remission after his treatment.

David Byrne: Who Is the Sky? Album Review

David Byrne: Who Is the Sky? Album Review

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

David Byrne’s American Utopia, released in 2018 as a resistance manifesto and rallying cry during the first Trump administration, was as ambitious as its title. Beginning as a songwriting reunion with his old partner Brian Eno, the album ballooned into a Broadway production that was eventually captured on film by Spike Lee. Every iteration and star collaboration positioned American Utopia as a major statement, a reckoning with the distance between the illustrious promise of the United States and its benighted reality.

Arriving after all that commotion, Who Is the Sky? feels like a sigh of relief, an exhale after such a gargantuan endeavor. The two albums, so different in feel, derive from the same premise: Joy is precious in the 21st century, so it’s worth celebrating the reasons to be cheerful. That phrase, lifted from an old new-wave hit from Ian Dury & the Blockheads, is the name of Byrne’s ongoing cross-platform positivity project, a kind of Buzzfeed for relentless optimists. It wouldn’t be a stretch to consider What Is the Sky? an extension of that publication: These songs are designed to help get you through the day—vivid, colorful tunes that place a premium on human interaction. But an album is a different beast than a daily dose of motivation. The line between positivity and platitude is a fine one.

Byrne certainly sounds tirelessly exuberant on What Is the Sky?, thanks in part to the assist he receives from Ghost Train Orchestra, a freewheeling ensemble that’s no stranger to ambitious undertakings. Prior to teaming with Byrne, the collective released a tribute to visionary polymath Moondog, performed in collaboration with avant-classical veterans Kronos Quartet. If any group can navigate Byrne’s buoyant polyrhythms and sly stylistic shifts, it’s Ghost Train Orchestra. But Who Is the Sky? is not intended as high art: It’s designed to be a bustling pop album, so Byrne has brought in producer Kid Harpoon—a British musician who’s helped Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus take home Grammys—to supply the requisite pizzazz.

Don’t take Kid Harpoon’s presence, or the cameo from Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the galloping “What Is the Reason for It?,” as a sign that Byrne is tempering his eccentricities in hopes of reaching a broader audience. Kid Harpoon’s sparkling production gives Byrne the freedom to live loud, pushing his eccentricities to the extreme, a shift that’s evident the moment “Everybody Laughs” launches the album on a note of aggressive happiness. Yelping a laundry list of banal universals (“Everybody laughs and everybody cries/Everybody lives and everybody dies”), Byrne sounds like an over-caffeinated busker desperate to get passersby to join the party. His zeal steamrolls any hint of the darker side of human nature (“Everybody knows what everybody does”), as does the zest of Ghost Train Orchestra: They’re all clashing primary colors.

Today (Saturday September 13) sees the opening of the new David Bowie Centre at London’s V&A East Storehouse, containing over 90,000 of the icon’s possessions to guide you through his artistic life and impact on culture. Check out our walk-through video below, along with our interview with the curator.

Opening back in spring, the V&A Storehouse is a new working store and visitor attraction in the new cultural quarter in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, and is home over 500,000 works, including the Glastonbury Festival Archives, costumes from PJ Harvey and Elton John, designer couture, vintage shirts, Samurai swords and many more. It will also house over 100 curated mini-displays. Now, David Bowie’s vast collection is part of it and available for public view.

Continuing their collaboration after the V&A’s acclaimed David Bowie Is exhibition in 2013, the new David Bowie Centre is now open – containing the Thin White Duke’s iconic costumes, musical instruments, make-up charts, stage models, Oblique Strategies card decks, personal notes, writings, lyrics and music, sketches, designs, photos and much more. So far it has revealed Bowie’s favourite songs in a note that he left, and work on an unfinished stage musical as part of the many ‘unrealised projects’ unearthed. There are also curated exhibitions of objects by Bowie collaborator Nile Rodgers and super-fans The Last Dinner Party.

NME headed down to an early press viewing, where we saw Bowie’s legendary Alexander McQueen Union Jack ‘Earthling’ jacket, outfits from the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Let’s Dance’ era, storyboards for plays, handwritten lyrics, instruments played by the star, the key to his and Iggy Pop‘s Berlin flat, and were allowed to leaf through notes made in preparation of his final album ‘Blackstar’.

“It’s really a very different experience from the ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition,” curator Dr Madeleine Haddon told NME. “First and foremost is the size – this is a smaller and more intimate experience. It’s not an exhibition, it’s getting behind the scenes to experience a working archive.

“That fits within the broader mission of the V&A Storehouse, where we have 250,000 objects from our collection that you can now have access to. We’re really peeling back the layers of the museum and how and why we do things here.”

From today, fans can now book tickets through the V&A website to visit the centre itself, or you go through the collection online and search for the Bowie material and make an appointment to view said items either in the V&A storehouse study room or within the Bowie study room.

Check out our full interview with Dr Haddon, where she unpacked the many discoveries for Bowie fans that await them.

NME: Hello Dr Haddon. How would you describe the overarching spirit of The David Bowie Centre?

Dr Haddon: “A major part of this was thinking about how can the David Bowie archive not only tell his story, but also be relevant to people today – particularly creatives of all different disciplines, and especially young people. We’re thinking about the next generation of museum visitors and potential Bowie fans.

“An angle that we emphasise is how Bowie was such a pioneer and a creative. He was not only a musician, but he was an artist, a writer, an actor, a designer. We have objects that speak to the breadth of his creative practice. He was endlessly making, exploring and experimenting. That speaks to creatives today that don’t want to be contained within a single genre or box. They want to see themselves as expansively creative. Bowie really paved the way for that.

“We also emphasise the breadth of his impact on popular culture: art, music, fashion. So many of the artists, creatives and designers that we love today wouldn’t be where they are today without David Bowie. There’s Lady Gaga, who we have a fan letter that she herself sent to David Bowie, talking about how important he has been for her career.

“The story of the many David Bowies is contained within this archive. You can think of how Bowie means something different to so many different people, but there’s also the story of his collaborators and influences. There are many people he worked with throughout the different stages of his career. You can also learn about the many previously unnamed collaborators who have not had the chance to be woven in the Bowie story before.”

What can you tell us about access you had to the Bowie archive and estate?

“We were incredibly lucky, first given the V&A’s relationship with Bowie and the family. Through the David Bowie Is exhibition we already had an indication of what was in the collection, but Bowie had an archivist and a cataloging team of his own. There was a database for it and stored within museum level storage in New York and Jersey. He had his own museum in that way.

“A lot of that work was done for us. We’ve cataloged everything so people can search for it online. The project itself of our level of research will be ongoing long after the centre opens.”

And what of these ‘unrealised projects’ from Bowie you uncovered?

“We have a number of them throughout Bowie’s career of different films, musicals, concerts, unrealised songs, TV shows, you name it. They really speak to his endless need to be creating and exploring while working on many different projects at once.

“We have films that are contemporaneous to ‘Young Americans’ and ‘Diamond Dogs’ albums, and you can see how he was thinking up ideas for those albums in the music but also exploring them in a different genre. We have notes and sketches for characters and storylines and really fantastic storyboards. We have a lot of drawings by Bowie. We have many sketches for these unrealised projects that he was thinking through.

“The projects weren’t realised for a variety of reasons: either he didn’t pursue them or they were blocked.”

Are there many more newly uncovered revelations? Most hardcore Bowie fans would thank they’ve seen it all…

“You definitely haven’t seen it all – there’s so much more to see. We discovered certain guitars that we didn’t know that he’d saved from early periods, costumes we didn’t know that he’d saved. So much of the archive is newly uncovered revelations.”

David Bowie Is felt very generous. This is next level…

“Yes. You can explore his notebook pages, we have lots of lists that he created, he has a lot of writing on thinking about the future of the internet and what it’s impact would be on the music industry and society more broadly, we have a display that looks at his fascination with science fiction and futurism and how that was such an important inspiration and catalyst, we have a look at how he became one of the first artists to release his music online and to create his own website with Bowie Net. He was speaking with fans online and in chat rooms long before social media and he was such a pioneer with technology.

“So many of the instruments that he worked with were new technology that he was the first to experiment with too. Another theme we explore is how Bowie was such a pioneer of gender fluidity in terms of the clothes and make up he wore, particularly in the ‘70s. The creative freedom and self expression we have today is in credit to how expressive and pioneering he was.

“We look at how Bowie used his platform for those who didn’t have a voice. For instance, he used the ‘Let’s Dance’ video to platform first nation Australians for the first time on global television.”

And what about random sketches done out of boredom?

“We have a setlist from ‘Station To Station’ that just has random doodles. You see them a lot too when he’s writing lyrics. That’s what’s so intimate and vulnerable about it all: there’s a lot of the banal in here. To do lists of things that he wanted to remember with everything from exercising to getting back to collaborators, it’s all mixed up together.”

Even shopping lists?

“No, but we do have a menu from when he was in Berlin with what he and Iggy Pop wanted to order. He saved even that.”

What can you tell us about the items on display?

“We have everything from the Alexander McQueen and Bowie designed Union Jack coat that Bowie wore on the cover of ‘Earthling’ and during that tour, some incredibly iconic costumes from the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane period, Bowie’s paint palette and brushes, notebook pages, letters, storyboards, and a lot of photography.”

Will the items on display alternate?

“Yes, 75 per cent of them will stay on view for the next two years and the others will rotate every six months or so. That’s where our guest curators’ display will be. Our first were Nile Rodgers and The Last Dinner Party. We’ll also have displays in line with broader themes that we’re exploring across V&A East. Our first theme looks at the influence of jungle and drum n’ bass on Bowie’s work in the ‘90s, and that’s in dialogue with our first temporary exhibition opening in 2026 in the V&A that’s on the history of Black British Music.”

You have his desk too, right?

“We do, we have his last writing desk. It’s not on view, but you can make an appointment to see it.”

Are there any other pop culture figures that you feel that you could do something like this for with this much depth?

“Bowie is very unique from the perspective of what a polymath he was. There aren’t many pop culture figures that worked so expansively across so many genres. The archive is not only a testament to Bowie’s music, but to all his creative practices. That’s a really important narrative for us, especially in a museum like the V&A. You’d also struggle to find one who saved everything. Not many pop culture figures have 90,000 objects they could donate to a museum. We have objects from the beginning of his career through to the end. He kept everything. It’ll be while before we find someone else like him to do this with.”

The David Bowie Centre at the V&A Storehouse is now open. Visit here for tickets and information.

Meanwhile, Kate Moss recently shared a podcast celebrating the “artistic evolution” of Bowie, while the ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’ box set celebrating the music he made in the final years of his life in the 21st Century is out now.
