Ø: Sysivalo Album Review | Pitchfork

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

In 1994, on an album called Minimal Nation, Detroit’s Robert Hood stripped Motor City funk to its bones. Most of its tracks were made of little more than lithe, swinging drum programming and solitary synth patches that glistened like oil slicks; it’s generally considered the origin point for what came to be known as minimal techno. In February of the same year, more than 4,000 miles away, a taciturn young Finn named Mika Vainio took an even sharper scalpel to the same ideas. His debut album, Metri, couldn’t be more skeletal if it were a laboratory specimen. Where there are drum machines, they merely thump and hiss; his custom-built tone generators glisten like icicles and roar like buzz bombs. If Hood’s album represented minimal techno’s ground zero, Vainio’s was its ground Ø.

Vainio would go on to become best known as one half of Pan Sonic, a duo (with Ilpo Väisänen) that, from the early 1990s until its dissolution in 2009, waged a scorched-earth campaign against electronic music’s staid conventions. But it was Vainio’s Ø alias—after a symbol signifying absence in a number of contexts, from math and geometry to linguistics—that would be his longest-running project, evolving from those brutalist techno origins to encompass a wide array of electronic techniques and soundscapes.

In addition to many solo and collaborative albums under his own name, Vainio released eight albums as Ø until 2017, when he plunged from a cliff in France. He had been at work on a ninth Ø album for three years at the time of his death. Working from notes he left behind, Tommi Grönlund, his friend and founder of the Sähkö label, and Rikke Lundgreen, Vainio’s former partner, compiled the material into Sysivalo, his final album. (According to Lundgreen, Vainio had already decided upon the album concept, title, track order, and even cover art.) The title—a portmanteau meaning something like “charcoal light”—is evocative and fitting. Vainio’s music often felt like an apocalyptic clash between being and nothingness, but on Sysivalo, darkness and light flow together in ways that are unusual for his work, evoking a dynamic mixture of vulnerability, tenderness, and grace.

Vainio’s music could sometimes sound like he had jacked directly into an electrical substation, but his palette here is soft and tufted. Distant thunder takes on a purplish pastel hue, misted with white noise. There are few hard attacks and even fewer moments where the levels bleed red. A bite-sized quality distinguishes these 20 tracks, which run shorter than he typically worked. Vainio’s enduring interest in capturing the vastness of sound is distilled into pieces that feel both atmospheric and tactile, like cupping small clouds of colored smoke in your hands. Yet there’s little doubt that Sysivalo is envisioned as an album—a single, overarching work, rather than a collection of stray pieces. A ruminative mood pervades the hour, and tones and themes frequently repeat. The drawn-out foghorn blast that opens the album with “Etude 1” reappears, whittled to a fine point, in “Etude 5,” and turns up again nine tracks later in “Aine” (“substance”), threading the album with a faint sense of deja vu.

Miles Kane shares “rock n’ roll creeper” new single ‘Without You’

by jummy84 September 25, 2025

Miles Kane has shared a new single called ‘Without You’ – listen below.

  • READ MORE: Miles Kane tells us about new Dan Auerbach-produced album ‘Sunlight In The Shadows’ – and the chances of a Last Shadow Puppets reunion

The song marks the fourth preview of the singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album, ‘Sunlight In The Shadows’, which is due for release on October 17. Pre-order/pre-save here.

“For me, the track is a rock n roll creeper,” Kane explained of the vintage number. “The underdog of the album that has that ’70s dark vibe to it. It was one of the very first tunes Dan [Auerbach] and I wrote together and it’s still got that rawness to it.”

Black Keys frontman Auerbach produced Kane’s full upcoming album, including the previous singles ‘Love Is Cruel’, ‘Electric Flower’ and ‘I Pray’. He is also credited as a co-writer, singing backing vocals and playing on every song.

Listen to ‘Without You’ here:

Speaking to NME over the summer, Kane explained of his new album: “I’m absolutely obsessed with it. You’ve got your T-Rex glam rock-y ones that are like, ‘Wow!’, then there are slower moments. There are two songs called ‘Always In Over My Head’ and ‘Walk On The Ocean’ which have almost a bit of a crooner-y Burt Bacharach vibe – they’re a bit [Last Shadow] Puppets-y as well.

“It’s got all the elements that I’ve shown over 20 years of making music and stuff. I feel it’s all combined into one.”

When asked about what Auerbach brought to the table, the musician told NME that the pair “hit it off so well” after meeting “last summer for the first time”. He said: “It sounds so fucking cheesy, I know, but the connection was something really special.”

Kane continued: “Then he said, ‘I’d love to produce you and I’d love to sign you’. It was this opportunity that happened out of nowhere; it wasn’t the plan at all. Even our Jay was like, ‘Man, you’ve got to do this – this is special’. For once in my life, it all fell into place.

“I was still touring that last album [2023’s ‘One Man Band’] until December, then in January I went over to record with Dan and this incredible band that we put together. We recorded the album in five days, we did it all live, and I just felt so comfortable and respected. The result is so good that I’m still pinching myself about it all.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Kane was asked whether he wanted to make another album with his friend and Puppets bandmate Alex Turner. “Well, I would, but we’ll just see where it goes,” he said. “I’m always up for anything, me.”

Kane will play two special stripped-back solo UK in-store shows at London’s Rough Trade East on October 16 (find more information here). Details of a headline tour are set to be announced soon.

In other news, Kane is set to open for Kasabian at their huge gig in London’s Finsbury Park next summer. He appears on the line-up alongside Razorlight, The K’s and more.

Metro Boomin Testifies, Gives His Side at Civil Rape Trial

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Hip-hop producer Metro Boomin told jurors at his civil rape case on Wednesday that he had two consensual encounters with his accuser in 2016, always wore a condom, and couldn’t wait for his trial to start so he could testify and give his side.

“Were you wrongly accused?” his lawyer, Lawrence Hinkle, asked inside a federal courtroom in downtown Los Angeles.

“Absolutely. I’ve been thinking about this day for a year,” the producer, whose legal name is Leland T. Wayne, told the jury. The influential producer, songwriter, and DJ said he found it “preposterous” that plaintiff Vanessa LeMaistre had accused him of raping her in a hotel without a condom in 2016 after handing her a drink that allegedly caused her to “black out.”

“I really don’t know where to start. This is crazy. I can’t even believe I’m up here doing this right now,” he said. “For her to accuse me of something like this, it’s something I could never fathom. I can’t even say what I think should happen to people who rape people.” Wayne testified that he lost his mother to domestic abuse and believes sexual abusers “should be tortured and killed.”

Asked point-blank if he ever sexually assaulted LeMaistre, he said, “Absolutely not.” Asked again minutes later, he said, “No way in the world.”

Wayne, 32, took the witness stand as his friend and fellow Atlanta-based artist Young Thug watched in the courtroom gallery. “I’m just here to support him,” Young Thug told Rolling Stone as he walked into the courthouse during the lunch break. “He’s a longtime friend.”

Earlier on Wednesday, LeMaistre finished her own testimony in the case, telling jurors she was still reeling from the recent loss of her newborn son in 2016 when she visited Wayne at a Los Angeles recording studio after ingesting half of a Xanax. She said Wayne handed her a shot that she sipped shortly before she passed out. LeMaistre said she later found herself drifting in and out of consciousness in a hotel room with Wayne on top of her, penetrating her vaginally and then performing oral sex on her. When she finally woke up completely hours later, Wayne allegedly ushered her out of a side door and pointed her to a car that returned her to the studio to retrieve her car, she testified.

Editor’s picks

“I was confused,” she told jurors of her immediate reaction. She said she didn’t go to the police right away or confront Wayne because she was still processing what happened. “It was very foggy for me waking up the next day,” she explained.

LeMaistre, who was 30 when she first met a 22-year-old Wayne in Las Vegas earlier that year, testified that she spoke about the alleged assault with a mental health professional she was seeing at a treatment center called Prototypes in the fall of 2016. She later discussed it with professionals again when she called a pair of rape hotlines in 2024, she said.

“Having lost my son, and the defendant assaulting me, have been the two, by far, worst things I’ve ever experienced in my life. It has been excruciatingly painful,” LeMaistre said on the witness stand. “This stole the past nine years of my life. I haven’t been able to have any healthy relationships. I want to get married one day.”

During a fierce cross-examination by Wayne’s other lawyer, Justin H. Sanders, LeMaistre defended a series of handwritten notes she wrote that were turned over to the defense in discovery. In journal entries dated June 14, 2017, LeMaistre used two different pen colors as she authored what appeared to be a conversation with someone named “Chrisie.” “All of it was me just self-soothing,” she testified.

Related Content

“When should I hit back Metro?” she wrote in the journal. “Will I sleep with him again?” Then switching to Chrisie’s voice, she wrote, “Yes, and it will be beautiful, great, amazing.” Asked what she meant by “again,” LeMaistre said “technically” she already had slept with Wayne, but “the conditions were rape.”

Sanders then turned to notes LeMaistre wrote during a 2024 trip to Peru, where she engaged in an extended “Ayahuasca ceremony,” a spiritual ritual involving the ingestion of a psychoactive plant used by indigenous cultures in the Amazon. In the notes titled “Plan Ayahuasca Gave Me,” LeMaistre wrote that she intended to “blow the whistle on Metro Boomin.” She also wrote that she planned to contact the law firm that singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura used to sue music mogul Sean Combs, and further planned to publish her “date rape” allegations in a post on social media. “We’re asking for 3.4 million to 3.7 million,” she wrote in her sometimes admittedly illegible handwriting.

“That was the number given to me,” Le Maistre testified about the amounts. Asked if she meant that the numbers were “given” to her during the Ayahuasca ceremony, she said, “Correct.”

With eight jurors listening intently, LeMaistre said that when she first heard the Wayne-produced song “Rap Saved Me” in 2017, she believed the lyrics were about her. In the chorus, artists 21 Savage and Offset rap, “She took a Xanny, then she fainted. I’m from the gutter, ain’t no changing. From the gutter, rap saved me. She drive me crazy, have my baby.”

LeMaistre also testified that she found out she was pregnant after visiting a Planned Parenthood in late 2016. As Sanders walked her through her medical records from Planned Parenthood, he showed jurors forms listed her last menstrual cycle had been on Oct. 1, 2016, and her “most recent unprotected sexual intercourse” as having been on Oct. 13, 2016. She denied experiencing any instances of “coercion” or intimate partner violence, the medical records said. Another record dated Nov. 7, 2016, said the gestational age of the fetus was five weeks and two days. LeMaistre, who had a non-surgical abortion to end the pregnancy, later contacted Planned Parenthood on Feb. 10, 2025, asking to amend the reported dates in her records and remove her “denial of coercion.”

“You knew when you tried to change those records that it was the only way you could make your story stick,” Sanders challenged LeMaistre. “You had to change the dates of the last unprotected sex, correct?” Sanders asked. LeMaistre denied the allegation. Sanders appeared to be suggesting that LeMaistre wanted to link her pregnancy to Wayne because it would support her claims that Wayne had unprotected sex with her and a reason to allegedly pen the lyrics “have my baby.”

In his own testimony, Wayne said he “never” has sex without a condom because he’s not ready to be a father. “Even at that time, my high school sweetheart and I were still using condoms. There was no way this girl I just met in Las Vegas, that I had unprotected sex with her,” he testified.

Asked if there was any truth to the allegation he personally authored or even “suggested” the cited lyrics in “Rap Saved Me,” Wayne replied, “None whatsoever. I just made the beat.”

Trending Stories

While LeMaistre was the sole witness for her entire case, Wayne called a clinical psychologist to the stand to testify about her assessment of the plaintiff. Dr. April Thames, chief psychologist at UCLA’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, told jurors that she reviewed LeMaistre’s medical records and conducted her own 90-minute to two-hour exam with the plaintiff. She said she personally diagnosed LeMaistre with “borderline personality disorder with psychotic features.” Under cross-examination, she admitted that LeMaistre had not formally received that diagnosis before, though she previously had been diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

Both sides rested their cases on Wednesday afternoon. Closing arguments are set for Thursday.

‘America’s Got Talent’ Crowns Season 20 Winner

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

After all the tears, the cheers, the confetti and the fireworks, America’s Got Talent has a new champion — Jessica Sanchez.

The Texas native’s name was called out during the finale Wednesday night (Sept. 24) on NBC, completing a decades-long dream that a scriptwriter would be proud of.

With her win, Sanchez collects the $1 million champion’s check, an all expenses paid trip to Universal’s new theme park Epic Universe, and a special place in the hearts of a nation.

Sanchez is the comeback kid, for real. She auditioned for the first season of AGT back in 2006, when she herself was a child. Now aged 30 and married, she’s the hero of AGT 2025, which she aced while nine months pregnant with a daughter of her own.

On Tuesday night’s (Sept. 23) live final, Sanchez nailed her rendition of “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Wearing a delicate all-white ensemble, Sanchez was all power and precision. “It’s perfection,” remarked Sofía Vergara, after the singer’s final performance. “You look like a little pregnant angel. I mean you look beautiful, your voice, I’ve never heard anything like that. Bravo Jessica.”

It was Vergara who, during Sanchez’s audition, gave the singer her Golden Buzzer, and a direct pass to the live round of the competition.

Viewers agreed. When America voted for the final time, it was Sanchez who came out on top.

Earlier, Sanchez joined forces with aerial specialists Sirca Marea for one last performance of “Golden Hour” by JVKE, returning to a song that earned her a spot in the Finals.

Performing in front of the acrobatic pair, “I feel like they made the song come alive,” she later told AGT host Terry Crews. “I mean, they’re just so amazing.”

Sanchez came out ahead of a 10-strong Finals field that included Mama Duke, Micah Palace, Steve Ray Ladson, Team Recycled, Chris Turner, LightWire, Jourdan Blue, Leo High School Choir and the high-flying Sirca Marea.

For the record, second place went to freestyle rapper Chris Turner, and singer Jourdan Blue completed the podium in third place. Chicago’s Leo High School Choir came fourth, and visual artists LightWire snagged fifth position.

Watch Sanchez’ final performance below.

More to come.

South Park Dumps on Brendan Carr With Cat Feces, Kyle’s Mom Heads to Israel

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

*Warning: This article contains spoilers*

Where to even begin with tonight’s episode of South Park? Following a week-delay — officially attributed to Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s inability to finish the episode on time, but likely also intended to create some distance from the events surrounding Charlie Kirk’s murder — it was anyone’s guess what direction the comedy duo would take. Parker and Stone have never shied away from touching the third rail, but the heightened rhetoric around political violence, underscored again today by the targeted shooting at an ICE detention facility in Dallas, Texas, made for a backdrop the South Park creators likely weren’t ready to confront. Instead, on Wednesday, they opted for a path far less divisive and politically fraught: the war in Gaza.

For the first time since Israel’s invasion of Gaza began two years ago, Parker and Stone tackled the crisis head-on — but in the way only they could. The episode opens with the students of South Park Elementary placing bets on prediction markets like Kashi and Polymarket, with one of the most popular props being whether Kyle’s mom would strike Gaza and destroy a Palestinian hospital. Shockingly, Cartman isn’t behind the prop itself, but after realizing the lucrative potential in driving up its odds, he hatches a scheme.

“Ever since Kyle got all pissed off, the odds are going up that his mom will attack Gaza,” Cartman explains. “We can influence Kyle to get the odds raised more. It’s a conflict of interest, it’s a way to make more money. All we have to do is make sure Kyle stays angry and talk anti-Semetic shit about his mom to goose up the odds more… It’s obvious rage bait.”

Related Video

And go begins Story B involving Donald Trump Jr., who is portrayed as Strategic Advisor for Predictive Markets, chair of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission, and Special Advisor to Israel. Kyle soon finds himself in a game of telephone with Trump’s eldest son as he tries to get the wager removed from the app.

“If it’s offensive, you should talk to the FCC… talk to Brendan Carr,” Trump Jr. tells Kyle, setting the stage for the episode’s biggest highlight.

But first, let’s cover what Daddy Trump is up to this entire episode. After realizing his life is about to change after knocking up Satan, Trump becomes determined to get rid of the baby. Unfortunately for FCC commissioner Carr, he shows up at the wrong place at the wrong time and stumbles into each of Trump’s plots, seriously injuring himself in the process. By episode’s end, Carr has contracted a case of toxoplasmosis from exposure to cat feces. “If it reaches the brain, he may lose his freedom of speech,” the doctor warns Vice President JD Vance.

As for Kyle’s mom? She never does end up bombing Gaza, but she does travel to Israel to berate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “Just who do you think you are, killing thousands and flattening neighborhoods, then wrapping yourself in Judaism like it’s some shield from criticism?”

Following its premiere on Comedy Central, Season 27, Episode 5 of South Park — “”Conflict of Interest” — will be available to stream on Hulu beginning Thursday, September 25th.

Portugal. The Man Tease New LP With Two Singles

Portugal. The Man will return this fall with their 10th studio album, SHISH, which will arrive Nov. 7 on the band’s new label, KNIK. The singles “Tanana” and “Mush” are out now and can be sampled below.

“‘Mush’ is survival, connection and ambition,” frontman John Gourley says. “Rural life with moments of danger and absurdity, like dirt bikes, smokers, gunfire and video games. The repeated line ‘we can be family’ pushes against isolation, reaching for something solid. This is a repeating theme on the record — build a life, support your people, buy land and grow something lasting. The message is simple: don’t give up, want more and fight for it.”

As for “Tanana,” Gourley says it “voices a generational sadness, searching for fleeting meaning in a world on edge.”

The 10-track SHISH follows the surprise June EP uLu Selects Vol #2 and is Portugal. The Man’s first studio album since 2023’s Chris Black Changed My Life. It will be supported on a previously announced North American tour, which begins Nov. 6-7 in the band’s adopted home base of Portland, Or.

Portugal. The Man will also visit the U.K., Ireland and Europe next year, with dates running from Feb. 23 in Dublin through March 17 in Vienna.

Rihanna, A$AP Rocky Welcome Their Baby Girl, Rocki

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky finally have their baby girl.

The Bajan mogul announced the birth of their daughter on Wednesday (Sept. 24) with Rih cradling her newborn. The second photo features a pair of baby pink boxing gloves.

She also revealed that their daughter is sort of named after her father. Rocki Irish Mayers was born on September 13, according to Rih’s Instagram caption.

In a recent interview with ELLE, Rocky admitted that he and his lady have been “praying” that their third child would be a little girl.

“I hope it’s a girl. I really do. We’re praying for a girl,” the rapper told the outlet. “Our first time, we wanted to know the sex of the baby. The second time, we didn’t want to know. Third time, we don’t want to know until, you know.”

He later confessed, “I feel like it’s going to be a girl. This pregnancy is so different from the other two. You can tell from the experience. I hope it’s a baby girl, man. I need that.”

Meanwhile, Rih has been discussing having a little girl since her second pregnancy, despite her love of being a boy mom. “Having a house full of boys, I thought I was a girl mom, but I’m a boy mom. I love this. I love it. I don’t know what God wants, but I would go for more than two. I would try for my girl,” she told Interview.

In the same conversation, Rocky praised his lady and described their children as their “best creation.” He gushed, “I think we do a real great job at collaborating, making children. I think that’s our best creation so far. Nothing’s better than that out there, any design.”

Deradoorian Joins Spotify Exodus, Pulling Music From Platform

Deradoorian Joins Spotify Exodus, Pulling Music From Platform

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Deradoorian is the latest artist to pull music from Spotify. The singer-songwriter and former Dirty Projectors member cited chief executive Daniel Ek’s weapons investments—the main motive for the recent exodus—and alluded to recent online content accusing the platform of expanding its music usage rights. Spotify clarified in a statement that Spotify for Artists terms have not changed, and said those terms do not govern artists’ music rights.

Many of Deradoorian’s albums have already been taken down from Spotify but, she noted, remain available to stream and buy elsewhere. Her statement begins, “Since Spotify came along, I have always felt skeptical and opposed to their platform. Because it became the norm, I felt like I had to just put up with it and take what I could get. Perhaps that was true more so in the nascent stages of my solo career, but it doesn’t feel that way now.” She added that Ek’s investment in the artificial-intelligence weapons contractor Helsing prompted her to dig into other issues around the platform, such as the way Spotify uses artists’ music. The “slow erosion,” she wrote, of “our perceived ownership over our music—and the way its profits were used—was now too egregious to ignore.” Deradoorian admitted she did not conduct intensive research but said, “We all know that Spotify practices bad business. So, I just made the choice to stop it.”

In an email, a Spotify spokesperson said: “You might be seeing some misinformation online about a ‘change’ to the Spotify for Artists’ Terms of Use. These claims are false.” The spokesperson clarified that confusion about music usage rights revolves around a phrase that appears prominently in its terms of use: “user content.” That refers not to artists’ music but to listener content: “things like listener-created playlist covers, podcast comments, and playlist titles,” according to the statement. Terms of use for listeners—not artists—were recently updated, the spokesperson added.

Last week, Massive Attack became the biggest artist yet to announce its departure from Spotify, primarily citing Ek’s investment in Helsing. They also shared a separate statement about joining No Music for Genocide, which calls for artists to geoblock their music in Israel. (Spotify for Artists has clarified that Helsing is not involved in Gaza.) The band joined an exodus that includes Hotline TNT, Young Widows, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, WU LYF, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Xiu Xiu, and Deerhoof.

For the avoidance of doubt, Deradoorian concludes her statement, “I do not support AI technology that’s built to spy on us, create weapons to kill us, and utilize psychological tactics to dumb us down to the point of not questioning our reality and devolving our neural connections. It’s important to employ your mental faculties and ability to question in these times and I am trying harder to do that more consistently.”

Mariah Carey ‘Flowers’ Interview With SZA: Watch

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Mariah Carey got her Flowers on Wednesday: She appeared on Apple Music’s Flowers as the series’ first guest, where she was interviewed by SZA for the livestreamed event.

The pair were in the studio the night before, SZA revealed during their conversation, where they listened to Carey’s new album and also discussed Carey’s secret “grunge” album she recorded back in the late Nineties, Someone’s Ugly Daughter, which she recorded under the name Chick and recorded as she was making 1995’s Daydream.

As for her new material, Carey revealed her favorite song from the new effort is the title track from Here for It All. “That’s my favorite, and that’s why I named it Here for It All ‘cause I didn’t want people to pass it by,” Carey said. “Because I was going to put it as the end song, and then I did, just to make sure people heard it.” Later, the played a snippet of the track, with SZA commenting about the gospel breakdown in it.

They also discussed Carey’s faith and the track “Jesus I Do,” which features the Clark Sisters, who Carey said she had been “worshipping for years and years.”

SZA asked about Carey’s note choices, which Carey said comes as she’s writing. “It’s interesting, because a lot of it’s born when I’m writing the song, you know. And there’s a melody that is just come to me,” she said. “And it stays in the song and it, you know, when the song becomes whatever it’s going to become, that’s it.”

As for her ad-libs, she added: “I don’t know that I think about it. It’s just something that comes to me during the the moment of creating the song. So it’s all one thing is what I was trying to say before. … But, yeah, it’s all one moment for me most of the time.”

At one point, SZA asked Carey what “the most important thing that your mother taught you about life and about music and singing in general?” Carey’s mother Patricia was an opera singer and vocal coach. Patricia died in August 2024, the same day Carey’s estranged sister, Alison, died. “We had a very interesting relationship, and then she just passed away last year,” Carey said of her mother.

“I think one of the main things that she said, the one thing she said to me, and it was clear, and it was right there, she said, ‘Don’t say if I make it, say when I make it,” she continued, which brought tears to her eyes.

The full taped livestream is currently available to Apple Music subscribers. Carey’s 16th studio album, Here for It All, arrives on Friday.
