For at least 3.500 years, Indians have celebrated the rice harvest with a festival of renewal.

The festival of lamps, light and new beginnings is celebrated from the first new moon day of the month of Kartika (this generally falls in October or November, in the Gregorian calendar), and marks the beginning of a new harvest year.

The earliest records of it date to the 3rd century CE, with Sanskrit texts of the time mentioning a festival then called Yaksharatri or Night of the Yakshas. Interestingly, it was celebrated with lamps, gambling, and the worship of Kubera, lord of the yakshas and god of wealth.

By the 6th century, the festival was featuring in Sanskrit plays.

By the 11th century, travellers to India such as the Iranian scholar and traveller Al-Biruni were writing of a festival in the month of Kartika, describing lamp-lighting, gifting and homes adorned with rows of lamps.

* c. 3000 BCE: THEYYAM ANCESTRAL WORSHIP, INDIA

This festival has roots in the ancient tribal and Dravidian cultural practices of the Chalcolithic Age (named after the Ancient Greek words for “copper” and “stone”, this period extended from about 3000 to 1500 BCE).

Theyyam is considered one of the oldest living ritual traditions in the world.

It combines ancestor worship, fertility rites and myth, and is believed to have originated among indigenous tribes in the Malabar region of present-day Kerala.

By the 12th century, royal patronage had helped create a formal structure for the ritual dances, performed in elaborate costume.

There are now over 400 variants of Theyyam performed in Kerala and parts of Karnataka. Vibrant colours and trance-like movements typify the dance form. Performances are typically held overnight, from October to April (thus avoiding the monsoon), between dusk and dawn.

* 3000 BCE: SED JUBILEE, EGYPT

Musicians and dancers accompany a procession carrying an idol of Amun-Re, Ancient Egypt’s king of Gods, from Karnak to Luxor, in a recreation of a temple carving.
Musicians and dancers accompany a procession carrying an idol of Amun-Re, Ancient Egypt’s king of Gods, from Karnak to Luxor, in a recreation of a temple carving.

This is probably the earliest recorded iteration of a jubilee.

The Sed was a feast held 30 years into a pharaoh’s rule, and every three years after.

Carvings and paintings in the Step Pyramid complex of Djoser, in Ṣaqqarah, paint an elaborate picture of the king presenting offerings to the gods before being anointed with a white crown representing Upper Egypt, and a red crown for Lower Egypt, signifying also the unification of the two regions.

Wearing a costume something like a kilt, and an animal tail, the king was then carried in a great procession, to be presented at the temples of deities across the region.

Fast-forward to the Opet festival, dated to at least 1500 BCE, and the bond between the pharaoh and the gods had been solidified.

A procession by boat, down the Nile, took the king and an idol of Amun-Re, the king of gods, separately to a temple in Luxor. There, the pharaoh was “wedded” to the deity, reinstating his claim as intermediary between all deities and Egypt. Depictions of the festival indicate the procession was accompanied, on its journeys to and fro, by singers, musicians and acrobats.

.

* 1600 BCE: THE SPRING FESTIVAL,CHINA

The Spring Festival (now better known as the Chinese New Year) dates to at least the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE).

It began as a new year celebration involving sacrifices to honour the gods and ancestors, and pray for a good sowing season and harvest in the year ahead.

The festivities began with rituals to send the kitchen god Zao Jun to heaven as emissary, with rice wine and sacrificial offerings of lamb. Today, the festival is celebrated over 15 days, with firecrackers, lanterns, incense and the worship of household deities, to ward off evil spirits and pray for good fortune in the coming year.

.

* 665 BCE: GYMNOPAEDIA VOCAL OLYMPICS, SPARTA

A sort of naked vocal Olympics, this was an annual festival to honour Apollo, god of music, poetry and the arts; Artemis, goddess of the hunt; and Leto, goddess of motherhood.

It consisted of war dances and choral singing in teams or age cohorts, with each group striving to outdo the others in lyricism, rhythm and physical grace.

The festival is thought to have lasted for 10 days.

Traders, travellers and people from nearby regions gathered to watch the festivities, which unfolded in Sparta’s central agora or marketplace. The celebration served as a rite of passage for young Spartans. underlining the important of discipline and unity, in a highly militarised society.

* 250 CE: THE O-HARAE CLEANSING RITES, JAPAN

For centuries, periods of distress in Japan, such as epidemics, earthquakes and natural disasters, have been marked by purification rituals involving salt, water and fire.

One of the oldest known ones, O-harae, has been traced to the Kofun period (250-538 CE). These rites were conducted twice a year, or more often, as needed, in attempts to purge the country of disease or ill luck.

By the 9th century CE, an epidemic of the plague had Kyoto in its grip, and a lavish new ritual was born.

Still celebrated in July in that province, Gion Matsuri was an attempt to appease vengeful spirits and stop the spread of this disease. This purification ritual involved crafting 66 stylised battle-axes representing Japan’s provinces, which were then paraded through the city on palanquins and eventually deposited at the sacred Yasaka Shrine.

The festival is still celebrated every July. One key difference: the palanquins have evolved into motorised festival floats.

.

* 1400 CE: INTI RAYMI, A CELEBRATION OF THE SUN, PERU

Among the Inca, the sun god Inti is responsible for warmth, light, growth and life.

This deity is honoured in a nine-day festival in June that involves colourful costumes, traditional dance forms and rituals animal sacrifices.

The Spring festival is believed to date to the Inca emperor Pachacutec (1438-1471 CE). It is now celebrated as the Inca new year.

Across parts of Peru and Ecuador, indigenous peoples visit rivers and springs for a ceremonial bath marked by songs and revelry. Villagers eat foods made only of maize, say prayers of thanks for the recent harvest, and pray for a good harvest in the year to come.

One of the biggest surprises at New York Comic Con on October 11 came during the Mortal Kombat II panel, where co-writer Jeremy Slater announced that work has already begun on the third installment in the franchise. Slater revealed that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema were so impressed with the upcoming sequel’s momentum that they’ve already hired him to write Mortal Kombat III, teaming up once again with series co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so convinced there’s a giant fanbase out there that they already brought me on to start writing the next film,” Slater told an excited crowd. He encouraged fans to show up strong for Mortal Kombat II when it hits theaters, saying, “We want to keep making them for you.”

Slater was joined by director Simon McQuoid and cast members Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford. Boon, who co-created the original video game series, moderated the panel.

Mortal Kombat II introduces Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), who must fight to bring back Earthrealm’s protector against the villainous Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). Returning stars include Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. New characters include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.

Originally set for release in October 2025, the sequel has been pushed to May 2, 2026. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster,” said McQuoid. “It’s going to feel huge.”

Urban teased Johnny Cage’s arc: “He starts as a broken man, forgotten by the world. But across the film, you’ll see him transform into a true Earthrealm hero.”

Travel Tips: How to find the best last-minute flight & hotel deals

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Planned a holiday at the last hour and looking for last-minute deals on flights and hotels? Last-minute deals can be tricky – there is no textbook rule about how to snag the cheapest flight ticket and hotel. Most experts would tell you that planning a month – ideally, two weeks or more – is the best both in terms of availability and price. However, you can still get last-minute deals depending on various factors – season, dates, and destination. Flexible travel dates and off-peak seasons can lead to significant savings on flights and accommodation.

How to get best student flight discounts(Canva.com)

Will last-minute deals be cheaper? Possibly. It’s all down to supply and demand. If you’re booking a hotel in a quiet destination at a quiet time of year, there’ll likely be a steady stream of rooms available, so a last-minute booking will be cheaper. If you’re booking somewhere in a busy destination at a busy time of year, booking in advance will likely save you money, according to Skyscanner.

Here are some tips to get the best last-minute deals, including flights, hotels and holiday packages:

• Be flexible: If you are planning a trip just days in advance, the more flexible you are on dates, times and even destinations, the more likely you are to get a good deal.

• Try ‘anyhwere’ on search engines: Search engines like Google Travel and KAYAK let you search for flights to “anywhere”, a bonus when looking for cheap last-minute deals.

• Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’: Try Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’ search that lets you find some of the cheapest fares out there for your chosen dates. To find last-minute tickets, just pop your chosen dates in and hit ‘search’ to see a list of the cheapest last-minute flights to anywhere in the world.

• Skyscanner’s ‘Whole Month’: Skyscanner offers a “Whole Month” search feature that allows travellers to find the most affordable dates to fly within a specific month, along with additional deals.

• Keep checking: If you do need a very last-minute flight, don’t give up! Keep checking back on fares – they could suddenly drop in the days before the flight departs.

• Low-traffic days: Travelling on low-traffic days (Wednesday or Thursday) might be easier on your wallet.

• High-frequency routes: Look for high-frequency routes, for example, New York, Bangkok, for last-minute deals, as they usually have more flight availability at a moment’s notice.

• Nearby airports: To find cheap last-minute flights, try expanding your search to include nearby airports. The nearby airport might be a few miles away, but that distance can turn into great savings. The nearby airport options are now offered on most online search sites.

• 21-day rule: Heard of the 21-day rule? Best prices tend to drop off once the flight is less than three weeks out, which is usually referred to as the 21-Day Rule.

• Frequent flyer miles: Burn your frequent flyer miles for last-minute flights because airlines sometimes release unsold seats as cheaper-than-normal mileage tickets. Don’t just check online for these deals; talk to the airlines’ customer care or initiate a chat with a representative online.

• Booking hotels: Booking hotels is different from booking flights. Hotels generally offer last-minute discounts on rooms, especially in big cities or during off-peak seasons.

• Price drop websites: For the best last-minute hotel deals, try HotelTonight, which specialises in discounted last-minute stays; or Hopper, which predicts when hotel rates are about to drop.

• Call the hotel directly: Another very good option for getting last-minute hotel deals is to call the hotel directly – front desk staff might have access to exclusive last-minute discounts.

• Travelpricedrops.com: For last-minute hotel deals, go to travelpricedrops.com, which searches hotel and travel booking sites across the web to find the world’s lowest prices.

• Bundle deals: Packages that include both a hotel room and a flight can offer amazing last-minute travel deals. Check ‘vacations’ or ‘package deals’ option on airline websites, as well as with online travel agencies.

• Check fares before Cancellation slot: Most airlines allow you to cancel a flight within 24 hours after you have booked the flight. Check fares one more time 23 hours after you book, just in case you find a better deal.

• Expedia: When you’re searching for last-minute hotel deals, you’ll be able to see the discounts on the thumbnail for each hotel. Look above the price, and you’ll see a green section that states the percentage you’ll be saving by booking last-minute with the hotel in question. For example, you may find a hotel in Delhi with a green section saying ‘Save 20% now’.

• Check blackout dates: Most luxury hotels have blackout dates; check that before booking.

• Can you cancel last-minute deals?: If you need to cancel your holiday rental or hotel for any reason, you’ll find several cancellation options available. In fact, some of the hotels come with free cancellation. When you’re searching for hotels, ones with free cancellation will say the words in green text just above the review rating, according to Expedia.

• Bank deals: Check whether the airline or OTA is offering deals on the bank through which you intend to pay. For example, on the Deals tab on MakeMyTrip.com, you will find a Bank Deals sidebar that mentions how much discount you can get on payment through a particular bank.

Jung Yong Hwa Breaks Silence On Wedding Rumors – The Answer Will Leave You Speechless! | Glamsham.com

In the perpetually buzzing world of K-pop, gossip tends to live on of its own accord—and this time, CNBLUE member and actor Jung Yong Hwa was in the midst of wedding rumors. On October 15, a post on an online community went viral after saying that the 36-year-old celebrity was set to wed next year.

With no recent news of dating and his status thought to be unmarried, the rumour surprised fans, generating confusion and intrigue. The cryptic post was simple with the words, “My friend told me that Jung Yong Hwa will be married next year,” and soon spread through all social media platforms.

Faced with the whirlpool of rumors head-on, Jung Yong Hwa went on a livestream to reach out to fans and lay the speculations to rest. Speaking in his characteristic tranquil and sarcastic tone, he replied, “Normally, next year’s itinerary comes up by June. As it is now, my calendar for next year is already filled [with work]. I don’t see a ‘wedding’ on it.”

Brushing aside the rumors, he added, “No wedding on the agenda—so do stop DM’ing me with questions about it. It felt weird even to comment, so I kept my mouth shut.”

With this blunt remark, the singer conclusively refuted the rumors and calmed fans that he has no plans for marriage in the near future. He underscored that his priority at the moment is his hectic professional engagements for the rest of the year.

Jung Yong Hwa’s candid but lighthearted answer came as a welcome relief to fans, who had been spamming his inbox with messages. His blunt message has set the rumors straight, telling fans that not all online gossip must be taken seriously—particularly when it is presented without facts.

Furry friends join festive season in sherwanis, sarees and lehengas

The second half of the year in India brims with lights, colours and the usual festive excitement. As webring out our traditional best, from shimmering sarees to tailored sherwanis, our furry friends are no longer being left behind. Across India, pet brands are now designing intricate sherwanis, tiny lehengas, and cute blouses, ensuring that cats and dogs can celebrate the season in equally stylish fashion.

Furry friends join festive season in sherwanis, sarees and lehengas

Thechowmeow, a Rajasthan-basedbrand delivering pan India, dresses furry babies in blouses, lehengas, and sherwanis. “For me, including pets in festivals by making them wear traditional outfits is just a way of showing love to your furry friends that they are also our family members. I have gotten many orders for matching outfits this season, like lehenga choli, sherwani with dhoti, and anarkali dresses, all under ₹1,000,” says founder Vandana Suman.

She uses laces for detailing and matching fabrics. For shimmery or other fabrics, they always use a lining inside, along with velcro and straps to adjust, so the pet feels comfortable while walking and sitting.

Shreya Goyal, founder of Delhi-based Furrvanity, tells us that they often get colour swatches, outfit pictures, and even design references from clients who want their pets’ looks to match theirs perfectly. “This year, we’re really going all out with variety and craftsmanship. We have some unique pieces like Maharashtrian sarees, kurtas with half jackets, intricately embroidered lehengas, anarkalis, and angrakhas. Our sarees have been an absolute hit this year, catching everyone’s eye,” she adds.

The festive range starts from ₹999 and goes up to ₹5,000, depending on the design, detailing, and level of customisation.

WRAPINFUR, an online pet brand, lines their outfits with pure cotton to protect sensitive pet skin, with prices starting from ₹649 “We use cotton lining inside if we are using fabric and make sure it is designed in such a way that it doesn’t irritate the pet. We also provide a hassle-free size exchange, since many pet parents are often unsure about their pet’s exact measurements,” says founder Chinmaye Agarwal.

It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with pet parents as well. Mumbai-based Simran Singh dresses her beagle, Poppins in festive clothing in a new colour each year to see which one suits him best. “We think he looks the cutest in a bandhgala kurta. Diwali just feels incomplete if Poppins isn’t wearing a sparkly kurta for the evening puja,” she adds.

Delhi-based Priyanka Kapoor dresses her golden retriever, Alex, in matching outfits, often customised by her local tailor. “I love dressing him up, but his comfort comes first,” she says.

Prime Video has officially released Red, White & Royal Wedding, the long-awaited sequel to its worldwide LGBTQ+ rom-com success Red, White & Royal Blue. After the original received a tidal wave of fan affection, the follow-up will further explore the touching romance of Prince Henry of Britain and Alex Claremont-Diaz, the United States’ First Son.

Actors Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine will reprise their fan-favourite roles as Alex and Henry, while director Jamie Babbit — known for But I’m a Cheerleader — steps in to helm the project. Matthew López, who directed the original film, returns as co-writer and producer, alongside bestselling author Casey McQuiston and screenwriter Gemma Burgess.

The original movie was a cultural hit, admired for its humor, emotional resonance, and affirming queer portrayals. Viral moments, fan illustrations, and TikTok edits propelled Red, White & Royal Blue into one of the most-viewed Amazon Prime romantic comedies, particularly in India.

Red, White & Royal Wedding follows the next chapter of Alex and Henry’s journey to forever as they dive into royal customs, self-discovery, and the scrutiny of life in the public eye.

Director Jamie Babbit stated, “After But I’m a Cheerleader, I’m delighted to return to queer love stories. We all need this type of optimism and gay joy.” López further stated, “It’s been a pleasure to co-write the next chapter. Jamie brings the perfect mix of wit and heart.

Author Casey McQuiston revealed, “Jamie has the sensitivity to care about Alex and Henry’s tale. I am waiting for the fans to see what’s next.”

As a celebration of love without borders set to be, the sequel reiterates that romance, even between politics and royalty, is always worth fighting for.

Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Travis Barker Rumors: What She Said Will Surprise You! | Glamsham.com

written by jummy84

Kim Kardashian has officially addressed — and shut down — long-standing rumours that she once had a romantic relationship with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. Speaking on the October 15 episode of Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, the 44-year-old reality star clarified that she has never hooked up with Barker, who is now married to her sister, Kourtney Kardashian.

“I never have, and that really sucks that that has gone on,” Kim said firmly, putting the rumours to rest once and for all. When asked directly if she had ever been involved with Barker, Kim responded, “No. Absolutely not. I never have.”

She went on to explain that her connection with Barker began through mutual friendships. “He dated Paris [Hilton], and we were all friends. I’d be with Paris, and we’d go to their tour in Amsterdam. I’ve been friends with him… and never hooked up with him,” she said.

Travis Barker himself echoed similar sentiments in his 2015 memoir Can I Say, where he called Kim “hot” and “eye candy,” but stressed that “Kim and I never touched each other.”

During the podcast, Kim also reacted to being mentioned in Barker’s book. “No, I didn’t get a heads-up,” she said, but added that it didn’t bother her because it confirmed they never had a relationship. “It was nothing weird. Everyone was just friends.”

Kim also opened up about her past relationships, including her marriage to Kanye West, with whom she shares four children — North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. “A relationship that lasted over a decade and gave me four beautiful children is not a failure,” she said.

Restaurants give Diwali a matcha needed twist

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

The matcha mania isn’t dying down anytime soon. Cafes and restaurants across cities are giving matcha an ethnic twist by introducing Diwali specials that include festive flavours.

Friends indulge in motichoor matcha

Adding sweetness to the festivities

Matcha teamed with kulfi is a blend of the nostalgia of malai kulfi – a caramelised sweetened milk flavour that’s balanced with the sharp flavour of matcha. Annie Bafna, founder of Noa by the Nutcracker says, “We wanted to add something with an Indian twist which would appeal to a larger audience and with the festive season coming up, what’s more nostalgic than a kulfi flavour! Matcha and kulfi come together to bring changing flavour sensations to the palette with each sip ranging from nostalgia to contemporary. Matcha’s popularity has been driven by social media and global lifestyle trends, with Gen Z leading charge. And as a result, we’re now seeing growing curiosity even among the 30–50-year-old audience who want to understand what the hype is all about.”

Diwali isn’t complete without the popular motichoor ladoos. Keeping that in mind, motichoor matcha pairs the mithai with matcha’s earthy bitterness to create something familiar yet unique! Meher Kohli, co founder of Tokyo Matcha Bar says, “Diwali is all about joy and indulgence and we wanted to capture that spirit with Indian sweets being integral to the celebration, we wanted to bring the festive sparkle to the cafe and our community by creating a matcha drink inspired by Indian mithai. We took the iconic motichoor ladoo and crafted a motichoor matcha to create a collaboration between Indian heritage and Japanese culture. The motichoor matcha is layered with a base of desi ghee motichoor ladoo, milk of choice, ice, topped with our delicious vegan cold foam & a motichoor ladoo on top. The mithai pairs beautifully with matcha’s earthy bitterness to create something familiar yet unique.”

The gulab jamun matcha turns the festive sweet into a drink you can’t stop sipping. “The drink’s got this harmonious balance of sweet, milky, floral notes of gulab jamun, which perfectly compliment the earthy notes of matcha. The gulab jamun hits you first and then the matcha cuts through with its earthy freshness,” says Ryan Soarwatefounder, Spill the Tea.

Fruits add festive flavours

For those looking for a feel-good indulgence, that celebrates wellness without missing out on flavour or festivity, Café Delhi Heights has come up with fruit matchas on their festive menu. Chef Ashish Singh, culinary director, says, “From a drink that pairs matcha with the richness of fresh mango puree, to blending it with coconut water the flavours evoke tropical, familiar notes of Indian celebrations. A blend of matcha and strawberry purée perfectly captures the spirit of Diwali. Much like the festival itself, it’s bright, joyful, and full of contrast where the earthy depth of matcha meets the sweetness and vibrance of strawberry. The drink’s lush pink-green hues mirror the colours of celebration, while its flavour profile balances calm and indulgence, a reflection of how we celebrate togetherness and lightness during the festive season. It’s our playful take on Diwali in a cup refreshing, cheerful, and delightfully unmatched.”

Nutty and aromatic notes

The festive Iced pistachio matcha lets nutty and aromatic notes shine through. “The aim is to blend innovation with nostalgia crafting experiences that feel celebratory, comforting, and truly reflective of Diwali’s spirit. – a celebration of flavour, nostalgia and togetherness. The drink blends timeless Indian traditions with modern cafe craftsmanship adding a touch of indulgence to every celebration,” says Rajat Luthra, CEO of Third Wave Coffee.

This holiday season, buckle up for a holiday movie with a spin — when romance, revenge, and robbery meet under sparkling lights and tinsel. Payback for Christmas, a fresh holiday heist rom-com, teams up Olivia Holt and Connor Swindells in an uplifting yet high-octane tale against the hectic background of London on Christmas Eve.

Olivia Holt plays Sophia, a quick-witted, street-smart shopgirl who’s done playing by the book. Sick of corporate greed and desperate to escape her soul-sucking job, she targets a daring heist — a robbery of London’s most notorious department store on its busiest night of the year. But Sophia’s not the only one with a plan.

Enter Nick, played by Barbie and Sex Education’s Connor Swindells — a dashing but hapless handyman also in dire need of an economic boost. When the two burglars collide during the middle of the heist, they’re compelled into a tenuous partnership. The reluctant union soon turns into something more as sparks fly amidst stolen jewels, security cameras, and festive mayhem.

As their scheme unfolds, secrets lurking in the shadows look to sabotage not only the job, but also their developing relationship. With time running out and trust in jeopardy, Sophia and Nick have to determine what is more important: the flawless score or the potential for real.

Directed by a soon-to-be-announced director, Payback for Christmas combines the sentimentality of a traditional Christmas romance with the excitement of a caper heist. Featuring snappy dialogue, surprising turns, and loads of holiday pizzazz, the movie is a fresh twist on the holiday movie genre.

Payback for Christmas will become the holiday movie of the season to watch — where love could be the biggest score of all.
