Beaches to snowy mountains: 3 Indian destinations to explore in January 2026

January in India has a way of surprising you. After the New Year frenzy, the country feels calmer, the air feels lighter, and every place seems ready to welcome a fresh start. Over different years, I wandered quiet streets in Goa, sipped kadak chai while Jaipur markets buzzed, and watched snowflakes settle outside my window in Gulmarg.

January in India brings calm beaches, colourful markets, and snowy escapes, offering unforgettable moments for every traveller’s senses to savour.(Hindustan Times)

Each destination has its own rhythm and charm, and experiencing them in January makes India feel extra inviting. From sun and sand to royal heritage and snowy slopes, this is the season to explore with all your senses alive.

Goa: Golden beaches, perfect weather, and the ultimate January escape

January in Goa is magical. Once the New Year crowds head home, the city turns calm, and beaches are blissfully quiet. The weather is just right, and a gentle evening breeze makes it a joy to be out and about. I spent my days wandering Fontainhas on a culture walk, hopping between beach shacks, and exploring spice gardens and cashew farms where feni is made and tasted fresh. Forget cars with AC and hop on a scooter. The January weather makes every ride feel like part of the experience. Booking in advance is key as the month is growing in popularity. My tip is to stay in an Airbnb in Siolim or Vagator, and for groups, a private pool villa adds a touch of effortless fun.

Quick facts

AspectDetails
WeatherDaytime highs around 28°C, cool evenings with a gentle breeze
AccessibilityGoa International Airport (Dabolim); well-connected trains and buses from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru
Best Travel TipPre-book accommodation and pick a scooter for easier beach and market access

  • Fontainhas Latin Quarter, spice gardens, and cashew farms for feni tasting.
  • Beaches at Morjim and Vagator for a mix of energy and calm.
  • Seafood shacks, cafreal dishes, and feni tasting.
  • Private pool villas for groups, and mornings on the scooter are unbeatable.

Jaipur: Royalty, food, and low-key explorations in the pink city

Jaipur feels alive in January. The sunny days are bright but not hot, and the evenings have a crisp chill that makes street snacks irresistible. From Hawa Mahal to City Palace and Amber Fort, there is plenty to see. Wandering the colourful markets adds a layer of joy. I loved dedicating a full day just to exploring the local bazaars, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells at my own pace. Food is at the heart of Jaipur, and a hot pyaaz kachori with kadak chai is the perfect way to cap off a walking day. LMB in the middle of the markets is ideal for a mid-shopping pit stop, with lassi and aloo tikki that deserve every bite. Jaipur in January invites culture lovers and foodies to wander and taste at ease.

Quick facts

AspectDetails
WeatherDaytime highs around 22-25°C, evenings can drop to 8-12°C
AccessibilityJaipur International Airport; well-connected trains and buses from Delhi, Mumbai, and Agra
Best Travel TipBook a hot air balloon ride for a morning view; plan a full day for markets and food exploration.

Food and exploring tips

  • Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace, and local artisan markets.
  • Pyaaz kachori with kadak chai, LMB lassi, and aloo tikki.
  • Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar for souvenirs and local shopping.
  • Walk during the day and enjoy evening street food in cosy temperatures.

Gulmarg: Powder snow, skiing, and cosy winter moments

Gulmarg in January is quite magical. Snow blankets the landscape, and the stillness feels restorative. I loved curling up with a book and a steaming cup of Kahwa while watching snow settle outside the window. It’s a perfect pause in a region overflowing with stunning visuals. Highlands Park stands out for its warm hospitality, and skiing lessons in January turn it into a family-friendly playground. Evenings around a bukhari, sharing stories and laughter, feel cinematic. The snowy slopes, cosy resorts, and quiet walks make it one of India’s most underrated winter destinations.

Quick facts

AspectDetails
WeatherDaytime highs around 2-5°C, nights can drop to -5°C or lower
AccessibilitySrinagar Airport, followed by a scenic 2-hour drive, is well-connected by road from Srinagar city
Best Travel TipCheck Gondola operations before visiting; pre-book snow gear rentals

Food and exploring tips

  • Skiing, snowboarding, and Gondola rides with breathtaking views.
  • Relax with a Pheran and hot Kahwa, spend evenings by a bukhari.
  • Sledging with locals and quiet walks through snow-laden meadows.
  • Reserve accommodations in advance and layer woollens for comfort.

Over different years, I found that booking ahead made every stay easier and left more time to wander, taste, and soak it all in. Each destination has its own rhythm, and visiting all three across separate trips turned January into a month for travelling with all senses awake. A sunny morning in Goa, a chai break in Jaipur, or snow falling in Gulmarg becomes a memory that lingers long after the trip.

Alia Bhatt’s Diwali Look Is Pure Magic – Check Out Her Stunning Golden Saree! | Glamsham.com

Kareena Kapoor’s Diwali 2025 celebrations included a star-studded party at home in Mumbai, and the party was a red-carpeted Kapoor family affair. Married to Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt was one of the attendees. The actress of Jigra wore a striking golden saree and jacket ensemble, sharing glimpses of the evening on Instagram as “fam jam x diwali glam.”.

Alia was standing alongside her sisters-in-law Kareena and Karisma Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Anissa Malhotra, and Alekha Advani. She also shared close-up photos of her elaborate ensemble, which had been styled by Rhea Kapoor.

The stunning saree, a vintage fashion design from Ritu Kumar’s collection, is a recreation of a design done more than 30 years ago. The attire, termed by Rhea as a tribute to the “Silk Road,” has its usual silver tikki embroidery on rose gold silk. “A fashion history, frozen in thread,” she penned.

The saree featured lacy floral embroidery on the drape and pallu. Alia folded the pallu at the front, letting the craftsmanship take the spotlight. She teamed it with a sleeveless bustier blouse, which featured a plunging sweetheart neck, broad straps, and ornate silver threadwork.

With a dash of royalty added, Alia draped the ensemble in a full-sleeved, open-fronted jacket hand-worked to match the saree. Her accessories included a gold choker, statement mang tika, bracelets, and rings.

Alia had a light but festive makeup look — rose gold eye shadow, feathered brows, dewy skin, rosy cheeks, mascara-loaded lashes, and rose lips. She had her hair done in a simple centre-parted, loose do.

With her mix of vintage sophistication and modern styling, Alia’s Diwali look was a perfect homage to timeless Indian fashion with a fashionable twist.

Annakut: A tradition of abundance and devotion on Govardhan Puja

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

The morning after Diwali smells of incense and ghee, not fireworks. As homes trade sparkle for sanctity, devotees prepare for Govardhan Puja, a celebration of faith and food. Rooted in Krishna’s legend and the spirit of gratitude, the day sees the Braj region come alive with the grand 56 bhog, an offering of abundance and devotion.

Annakut celebrations at Maa Annapurna Temple, Varanasi and ISKCON Temple, Vrindavan

The word Annakut literally means ‘mountain of food.’ On this day, devotees prepare an elaborate feast — the 56 Bhog — comprising freshly made vegetarian dishes offered to Lord Krishna. The ritual expresses gratitude for protection, prosperity, and a good harvest.

Story behind the feast

Shailendra Goswami, a 16th-generation priest at Shri Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan, explains, “The Shrimad Bhagwat recounts how young Kanha, at age eight, lifted the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger for seven days to shield villagers from Indra’s wrath. As gratitude, the Brijwasis offered him food, eight meals for seven days, and thus began the tradition of 56 Bhog.”

Temple traditions

“Bajre ka bhaat and kadhi are essential,” Goswami adds, saying, “At the Giriraj Temple in Govardhan, the largest bhog features an array of rice dishes, curd, ghee, butter, sugar, leafy vegetables, sweets, and pickles, all cooked fresh on the day of the puja.” People also do parikrama of Govardhan Parvat on foot and then offer bhog to the parvat. As per tradition, they carry the bhog on their head.

At the Maa Annapurna Temple in Varanasi, which opens only for five days each year and closes after Annakut, devotees offer 111 quintals of bhog to the Goddess of Food. “The spread includes 50 varieties of sweets and six kachcha-pakka dishes, and nearly 500 quintals are later distributed among devotees,” shares temple representative Kashi Singh. In Namisharanya (UP), similar traditions continue, with temples categorising the 56 dishes — rice, puris, vegetables and sweets, before distributing the mahaprasad among devotees, says Govind Lahiri, Prabhu Jagatbandu Sunder Ashram.

Across India, especially in ISKCON temples, the Annakut display is recreated with elaborate artistry. Gaur Das Prabhuji, vice president of ISKCON Dwarka, says, “We combine scriptural authenticity with devotional creativity, from colourful rice and halwas to laddus, pedas, and sandesh. The Annakut hill is shaped on a large platform with rice as the base, ringed with sugarcane ‘trees’ and sweet-water lakes symbolising Radha Kund and Shyam Kund.”

Modern touch

In urban homes, the emphasis today is on quality over quantity: a smaller, sattvic spread prepared with purity and intention. “It’s more like a beautifully balanced thaali than a 56 bhog now,” notes chef Davinder Kumar, president, Indian Culinary Forum, adding, “The essence, gratitude through food, remains the same, adapted to modern lives.”

Even abroad, the devotion travels with those who celebrate. “Someone in London may use kale or broccoli instead of Indian greens, or in New York, make quinoa khichdi in place of rice,” he says and adds, “It’s not about the ingredient list, but the intent.”

In Lucknow, chef Ajay Avasthi of The Piccadilly Hotel adds, “This is the season of the start of new vegetables, which are now available in abundance. For grahast (family), like us, 56 varieties of vegetables (including various saags) are chopped together and in mustard oil do a tadka with jeera, rai and sabut-laal mirch. That is how we do, and those who want elaborate can display 56 sweets, but annakut bhog is done with 56 vegetables prepared in one go.” He further adds, “This is how it’s done at Khatu Shyam Temple in Lucknow as well. However, in temples, people cook 56 different items as a bhog. In Brij, khadi, bajra and churma are a must in the bhog as it is of religious significance.”

In Haryana and Rajasthan, too, homes prepare bajra, kadhi, and mixed seasonal vegetables, celebrating the harvest with flavour, faith, and heartfelt gratitude.

The Internet Is Buzzing About Kim Kardashian’s Mysterious Mask At The Academy Museum Gala! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

When Kim Kardashian arrives on a red carpet, subtlety is never part of the plan — and her appearance at the Fifth Annual Academy Museum Gala was no exception. Held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, the star-studded event saw Kim embrace high fashion drama in a striking look from Maison Margiela Fall 2025 Couture.

Kim wore a nude-toned gown that clung elegantly to her silhouette, with a strapless, corset-inspired bodice and fluid draping that cascaded into soft folds at the hemline. Long, flowing sleeves added a dramatic, goddess-like flair. But it was her face-covering mask that truly stole the show.

The sheer fabric, wrapped around her head and obscuring her face, was an unexpected twist that turned heads and sparked conversation online. In a chat with Variety, Kim revealed that the mask was a last-minute addition — after completing full hair and makeup with longtime collaborator Mario Dedivanovic, who flew in from New York just for the event. “I’m sure he’s not so happy with it,” she joked.

Speaking about her look, Kim shared her admiration for the designer: “Margiela couture… You know, I love Margiela.” She also noted how the design reminded her of her own brand: “It does look very Skims-y… That’s why I was drawn to it when I saw the couture show.”

Kim paired the gown with an oversized, crystal-embellished choker and chunky green rings, adding sparkle and contrast to the soft-toned dress.

Reactions online were divided. While many fans hailed it as a “serve” and praised her boldness, others weren’t impressed, calling the outfit “boring” or “hideous.”

The gala, presented by Rolex, welcomed stars like Selena Gomez, Sydney Sweeney, Viola Davis, and Bruce Springsteen, raising key funds for museum programming and exhibitions.

Endocrinologist shares 3 'healthy' foods that spike blood sugar levels faster than a chocolate cake

Endocrinologist shares 3 ‘healthy’ foods that spike blood sugar levels faster than a chocolate cake

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Sugar spike is often viewed to come from ‘visually unhealthy’ foods. Based on sight, it usually includes chocolate, cake, pastries, or anything that appears too ‘sugary.’ Because of this appearance’s sake, one may be cautious of foods like these, which appear overly sweet, limiting the intake.

Many healthy foods too spike blood sugar, sometimes even more than chocolate cake. (Picture credit: Freepik)

But here’s the oversight, conventionally healthy-looking foods escape the scrutiny, even when they raise blood sugar just as rapidly.

ALSO READ: Endocrinologist shares best and worst fruits for blood sugar spikes: Know where berries, grapes, bananas, apples stand

Addressing this, New Jersey-based endocrinologist, Dr Alessia Roehnelt, shared 3 healthy foods that raise blood sugar faster than chocolate cake and how one can modify them to make them better. She revealed that a chocolate raises blood sugar in the range of 38–45, which is low to moderate. But the other ‘healthy foods’ which she highlighted spike the blood sugar much higher, in the range of 60s to as high as 90s.

1. Instant oatmeal packets

The first one she warned about is the instant oatmeal. Oats are often the first pick for a healthy breakfast, but which one makes all the difference? As per the endocrinologist, the ones which are instant oats are highly processed, and they cause a very rapid blood sugar spike.

How do you make it better then? Here’s Dr Roehnelt’s suggestion,”If you combine the instant oatmeal with maybe some milk, instead of water, you are gonna add some fat and protein that is gonna slow the blood sugar rise.” Instant oatmilk’s spike level is one of the highest among the foods she mentioned: 79–83.

2. Oatmilk latte

Oatmilk is chosen over dairy products widely, but how risk-free is it, especially when used for a latte?

“Oat milk is made from enzymatically broken down oats, which actually gives them a very high glycemic index,” Dr Roehnelt said. “When you combine that type of milk with some possible sweeteners in your latte, that’s gonna lead to a very high blood sugar afterwards.”

For the uninformed, glycemic index is a scale which evaluates how quickly a food raises blood sugar after eating it. Turns out a latte made with oatmilk is high on this scale. Dr Roehnelt shared the score of 65–75 spike, which is moderate to high. The endocrinologist’s recommendation to make this drink healthy was to replace oatmilk with almond milk to lower the glycemic index.

3. Acai bowl

Acai bowl is a thick smoothie bowl with a lot of fruits on top. Visually, it appears very healthy, but shockingly, the blood sugar spike after eating it is one of the highest. The endocrinologist revealed it to be in teh range of 70–90, which is labelled as high.

“These have a very high fruit-to-protein ratio, and then when you add on any type of juices or granola in there, it’s gonna raise blood sugar even more,” Dr Roehnelt explained why it is high on the glycemic index.

To make acai bowl more nourishing and less prone to spike blood sugar levels, Dr Roehnelt recommended adding a scoop of yoghurt or having some nuts.

So what happens if you continue with these supposedly healthy breakfast picks regularly? Starting your day with them can trigger a rapid blood sugar spike, followed by a crash, as per the endocrinologist. One feels tired throughout the day then.

Chandigarh, People in droves celebrated Diwali with gaiety and enthusiasm across Punjab and Haryana on Monday, with devotees queuing up in front of temples and gurdwaras, and citizens thronging market places for last-minute shopping across the two states and their twin capital Chandigarh.

Festive spirit takes over Punjab, Haryana on Diwali

Candles, ‘diyas’ and electric lights dotted houses as people exchanged sweets and gifts to ring in the festival of lights.

People thronged the market places for last-minute shopping as a festive spirit pervaded the two states and their joint capital Chandigarh.

Security was tightened across the region, especially in and around the vital installations, markets and places of worship, officials said.

Governors and chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana extended their warm greetings to the people on the occasion.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria, greeted people on Diwali, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also extended his warm wishes to the citizens.

Kataria said the festival of lights symbolises the victory of peace over conflict, good over evil, and light over darkness, and appealed to people to celebrate Diwali in an environment-friendly manner.

Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh said, “I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Haryana and the nation as a whole. May this festival of lights illuminate everyone’s life with courage, vigour, sagacity and enduring good health!”

Ghosh also said that as the nation celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, “let us work harder to drive India towards a future rooted in harmony, inclusiveness and compassion”.

The governor expressed hope that the festival would inspire citizens to strengthen the bonds of unity, fraternity and goodwill, and to contribute meaningfully to the progress and prosperity of the state and the nation.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said Diwali symbolises prosperity, harmony, and enlightenment, as he appealed to the citizens to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly manner, and fulfil their responsibility towards cleanliness.

Earlier in the day, Saini extended Diwali greetings to Governor Ghosh and his wife Mitra Ghosh, and exchanged sweets with them.

“It is a matter of great joy and pride that under the guidance of the Honourable Governor, the state is moving forward with new momentum and energy in its development,” Saini said in a post on X.

Haryana Police, meanwhile, took up the task of spreading happiness on Diwali, with many of its personnel visiting orphanages, old-age homes, slums, and the homeless.

Under a special initiative, police officers across the state selected areas in their respective jurisdictions, lit lamps with children and the elderly, and distributed sweets among them.

This Diwali is not just about lights, but also about human compassion and shared smiles, a statement issued by the police department said.

In Palwal, SP Varun Singla and his family celebrated Diwali with orphans and the destitute, lighting lamps, singing songs, and distributing sweets among the children.

“A true Diwali is when we can bring light into the lives of those in need. Sharing happiness with the underprivileged sections of society is the true meaning of this festival,” Singla said.

Katy Perry’s Heartwarming Gesture: Bringing Joy To Young Fans In Need! | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Katy Perry made her London stop on the Lifetimes Tour unforgettable — not just with music, but with compassion. During her October 13 show at The O2, the 40-year-old singer shared a touching moment with nine seriously ill children, a gesture captured by ITV’s This Morning.

Before taking the stage, Perry met each child backstage, taking time to learn their names, ages, and favourite things. Dressed in bright, colourful outfits, the children waited patiently for the pop star, their excitement visible. Katy posed for photos, offered warm encouragement, and created deeply personal moments with each of them, according to People.

One of the children was nine-year-old Florrie Bark, a cancer survivor who also founded a charity called Bemorefab, supporting other children battling the disease. Her mother, Stacy, described the experience as “one day where they weren’t just patients worrying about their next treatment,” adding, “This will stay with us forever.”

This gesture aligns with Perry’s ongoing charitable work through the Firework Foundation, which she has supported since 2018. The foundation runs Camp Firework, a creative sleep-away camp designed to inspire and uplift middle school children.

Perry’s Lifetimes Tour began in April in Mexico City, in support of her latest album 143, and has since spanned North America, Australia, and Europe. Her global tour has been a resounding success — shows in China sold out within minutes, with extra dates added in Shanghai. Due to overwhelming demand in Paris, two more concerts were added and quickly sold out. In South America, Perry will perform three consecutive stadium shows for the first time in her career.

The London concert demonstrated that Katy Perry’s tour is more than entertainment — it’s about making a difference. By taking time for children facing health battles, she created memories that will last a lifetime, reinforcing her commitment to using her platform for good.

Received mithai and namkeen boxes as Diwali gifts? Things to know before your soan papdi, kaju katli binges

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Diwali 2025: Diwali is not complete without homes filled to the brim with staple mithai boxes, featuring classics like soan papdi, kaju katli, besan or motichoor ladoos. Likewise, namkeens, such as chakli, murukku, and mathri, also earned a spot in gift boxes. After Diwali, the namkeens and sweets are munched on for days and weeks, casually making up for snacks without a second thought. But it is important to maintain caution as the favourite festive treats come with serious health risks. To understand more about these risks of popular sweets, HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to learn about their nutritional drawbacks and what the labels may hide.

If you have mithai boxes like this, think twice before you scarf down their contents. (Picture credit: Gemini AI )

Unhealthy nutritional value

The popular sweets and namkeens are all laden with sugar, oil and sodium. (Picture credit: Gemini AI )

Dr Reshma Aleem, senior clinical dietitian at Rela Hospital, Chennai, told us that these sweets and namkeens should not be consumed in excess. Often, this is an instinct when one is presented with such a wide array of tasty snacks, but the dietician urged that control should be exercised.

“Popular festive sweets like soan papdi, kaju katli, ladoos, and namkeens often contain hidden sugars, fats, artificial flavourings, and preservatives. These can also be made using palm oil, which can harm your health when consumed in excess. Further, many traditional snacks that we usually bring home have high sodium, which can raise blood pressure, especially for seniors,” Dr Asleem said, shedding light on the harmful ingredients your favourite Diwali snacks are made of.

The dietician warned about health issues like sugar spikes, bloating, and indigestion. It is riskier for ailing people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

Healthier alternatives

You can mindfully enjoy snacks this festive season. The dietician reminded that moderation is the key that keeps all your consumption healthy.

Revealing some of the safe choices, Dr Aleem shared, “Choosing homemade or freshly prepared sweets with less or a moderate amount of sugar and better ingredients can reduce the risk. Eating baked snacks over fried snacks and keeping your body hydrated can support digestion.”

Not all sweets have the same quality; some may be made with low-quality ingredients. The dietician highlighted how one can spot the genuine ones, “ Pure milk solids (khoya), sweets are made with cheap, dangerous mixtures containing starch and detergents. In place of pure ghee, they may use vanaspati or even animal fats. Synthetic milk made with urea, caustic soda, and shampoo and silver foil used to decorate sweets, is replaced with a cheaper alternative made of aluminium.”

Avoid sweets like these with shiny, silver foil. (Picture credit: Gemini AI )

One of the reasons these snacks require caution is because of the presence of harmful ingredients and preservatives that can disrupt safe health parameters if eaten regularly.

Beware of labels

What about healthy sweets? Some sweets come with labels and tags that contain nutritious components. But how truthful are they?

Dr Saurabh Arora, PhD in Pharmaceutics, Managing Director at Auriga Research, revealed that often people don’t read labels and their choice is based on taste and value for money instead. He shared a big red flag that most of the seasonal, festive products lack proper nutritional labelling. Most importantly, gift packs flood the market this time, like Diwali, Bhai Dooj, so there’s a lack of verification regarding their content as well.

It is vital for people to exercise their discretion because ‘healthy sweets’ may contain incorrect labels. He said, “A challenge is that when so many new products and varieties are coming up, most of the companies are just blindly picking up, copying the nutritional value from someone else’s label. They are not even putting effort to get their own product tested and establish the nutritional value, or even analysing the recipe to come up with some rationale. They are just randomly publishing. I have seen the Jalebi product labelled as having 70% protein.”

This is why it is important not to trust flashy nutritional claims on seasonal sweet products during the festive season, as it may be more of a marketing hack than being actually nutritious.

How to read labels?

Dr Reshma Aleem revealed these two easy steps for checking labels:

  1. Look for FSSAI certification: Always check for proper FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) certification on packaged sweets.
  2. What to see: Check sugar levels, hydrogenated oils, calories, preservatives, and expiry dates.
