Saturday Night Live went through a cast shakeup two months ahead of its season 51 premiere, and while some departures are shocking, the NBC sketch comedy series cycles through different comedians every year. So, who’s actually returning for SNL in 2025, and who’s part of the new cast?

Following SNL50 and the show’s season 50 finale, the show’s longest-running cast member, Kenan Thompson, teased to Page Six that “bittersweet” changes were imminent.

“Especially this year where it feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year,” the Nickelodeon alum said. “You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions this summer. It’s always like you want your kids to stay young.”

Hollywood Life has the latest updates on who’s in the SNL season 51 cast and who’s leaving.

Was SNL Canceled?

No, season 51 of SNL will still air on October 4, 2025. The show has not been canceled.

Who Is Returning to the SNL Cast for Season 51?

At the time of publication, these names are presumably still part of SNL for its 51st season:

Who Are the New SNL Season 51 Cast Members?

The following were announced as new cast members of SNL season 51:

  • Tommy Brennan
  • Jeremy Culhane
  • Ben Marshall
  • Kam Patterson
  • Veronika Slowikowska

Since multiple cast members have left the show, this list can change at any point before season 51 airs in October 2025.

Who Is Leaving SNL? 2025 Cast Departures

The following cast members are leaving SNL ahead of season 51:

Why Is Heidi Gardner Leaving SNL?

Heidi has not publicly commented on her shocking exit from SNL at the time of publication. Her departure comes eight years after she made her debut, and the actress became the longest-running tenured female on the show.

Was Anyone Fired From SNL?

It’s unclear who was fired and who left on their own accord, but Devon and Emil seemingly hinted that they were released from SNL.

Devon was the first to comment on his departure, sharing a screenshot from a computer Text Edit note to his Instagram carousel post in August 2025.

“Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes, it was really cool,” Devon wrote in his statement. “Sometimes, it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a f**ked up lil family.”

The top of Devon’s note was labeled, “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?”

As for Emil, the comedian also confirmed his exit via Instagram, implying that he was released upon receiving a phone call.

“I won’t be returning to SNL next year,” Emil confirmed via Instagram in late August 2025. “It was a gut punch of a call to get, but I’m so grateful for my time there.”

Sheinelle Jones has remained absent from the Today show in recent months, leaving fans concerned after she stepped away earlier this year due to what was initially described as a “family health matter.” Her absence began around January and included Hoda Kotb’s farewell episode, prompting questions about when she might return.

On May 23, 2025, it was revealed that Jones’ husband, Uche Ojeh, died following a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. During a heartfelt tribute on Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie remembered Ojeh as “a man whose joyful spirit and quiet strength complemented Sheinelle in every way.” Craig Melvin added, “He was that dad on the sideline at every soccer game, at all the concerts and recitals. He was that guy.”

As she navigates this difficult time, here’s what to know about the longtime co-host, her career, and her life away from the camera.

Sheinelle Jones Is from Pennsylvania

Sheinelle was born on April 19, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Sheinelle Jones Is Married

She has been married to Uche Ojeh, a consultant, since 2007.

Sheinelle Jones Is a Mother

The journalist is a mother to three children, whom she shares with Uche: son Kayin and twins Clara and Uche.

Sheinelle Jones Met with President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden

In an Instagram post on December 16, 2024, Sheinelle shared a photo of herself with her son Kayin as they posed alongside the 46th president of the United States, Joe Biden, and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. She captioned her post, “This moment with my oldest son Kayinand @potus and @drbiden transcended politics. I got emotional as the president kindly complimented his attire and then said these words to him with the most sincere eyes – ‘Son, I want to tell you the most important thing. Remember I told you this: always, take care of your mother.’ Kayin replied, ‘I will. Yes sir.’ -It felt like Biden stopped the clock for a second… so we could take it in. I got a little teary when we left that beautifully decorated room. It was a night we’ll always hold dear.”

Sheinelle Jones Began Working for Today in 2014

Sheinelle began her career with Today in 2014, starting on weekends and gradually working her way up to co-host, allowing her to appear several times a week.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published April 30, her Today co-hosts addressed her ongoing absence from the show. “I don’t know anything about when or the timeline [for her return], but we always think about her,” Carson Daly told ET, adding that they “talk about [Jones] probably every day.”

Daly, who also hosts The Voice, added, “We’re wishing her well, and she’s spending much-needed time with her family. That’ll just take its course. There’s so much love going out to her.”

Venice 2025: ‘Kim Novak’s Vertigo’ Reexamines the Actress’ Legacy

by Alex Billington
September 2, 2025

This is the story of a beloved Hollywood actress and her life off screen outside of her movies. Kim Novak is the award-winning star of Hitchcock’s all-timer mystery thriller classic Vertigo, and tons of other classic movies like Pushover, Picnic, The Man with the Golden Arm, Pal Joey, Jeanne Eagels, Strangers When We Meet, Kiss Me Stupid, and many others. She’s now 92 years old and still going strong. Kim Novak’s Vertigo is a brand new documentary featuring Kim Novak reflecting back on her life in Hollywood before she left the film business for good in the 1970s. She got tired of being treated as simply a pretty woman. It’s the latest creation from Swiss doc filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe, known for his many acclaimed doc films about cinema history – including 78/52 (about Hitchcock’s Psycho), Memory: The Origins of Alien, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist, Lynch/Oz, and this year’s Chain Reactions. Alexandre was lucky enough to befriend Kim – she literally talks about how she feels connected to him when he sits down to interview her in her home. This fascinating film is about identity and how Hollywood steals it. And about how she was able to discover herself in roles, even if she ended up getting tired of acting after decades of acclaimed work.

Novak’s original name was Marilyn Pauline Novak (her parents were of Czech descent); she took the name “Kim Novak” as a stage name when she entered Hollywood in 1954 after signing with Columbia Pictures. The film comes in at a brisk 77 minutes, and starts out with a fairly quick biopic look at her early days and life before arriving at Vertigo. Alexandre O. Philippe is not known for making linear, straight-forward docs and this is no exception. His narrative bounces around from Kim telling stories and leaving voice messages for him in modern times, to her work on Vertigo which was the first film Alexandre fell in love with while growing up, to her early days in Hollywood and acting legacy. Not much time is spent outside her film career – it never really explains what she has been doing since she left Hollywood in the 1970s. The real focus of Alexandre’s film is on her identity, which is especially unique because it’s also related to the three different characters she plays in Vertigo: Carlotta, Madeleine, and Judy. Novak reveals that she actually does not like being looked at and hated being the beautiful blonde of cinema, but of course did her best to play the roles anyway. She also discusses how she felt like more of a “reactor” than an actor. Alexandre is best at working in hundreds of film clips that perfectly depict whatever she is explaining about herself or her performances.

Many actresses, especially from this era, have talked about how much they despised the “beautiful starlet” status they were assigned as Hollywood actors controlled by studios. And ultimately this is what she got so tired of & why she left, which she repeats often. She also repeats over & over how much she had to fight to stay true to herself, and be herself, and stick to her own values & identity. The only problem is that for all this film gets into, she never actually explains what those values are and what “being herself” really means. Other than the fact that she is a huge animal lover – at one point she had a pet goat, and also a pet bluebird and dogs. Nonetheless, Kim Novak’s Vertigo is a heartfelt, touching, wholesome film featuring Novak being wonderfully honest about her life and her choices and her performances. There is obviously plenty of time spent on Vertigo, analyzing everything about her character & costumes. And most importantly, she explains how making this film with Alexandre allowed her to finally appreciate who she is all of these years later. it’s rather beautiful to see. This doc may only be enjoyed by die-hard film geeks and Kim Novak fans, but there’s still something endearing about watching her open up & speak freely about being a movie star. She seems so creative & charming. And I hope her life’s choices will inspire more woman to stay true to who they are, too.

Full Trailer for Coppola’s ‘Megadoc’ About the Making of His Latest

by Alex Billington

“No one I’m working with realizes how weird of a movie this really is…” Utopia has debuted the full official trailer for a crazy wacky making of documentary film titled Megadoc, from director Mike Figgis. This mega documentary is trying to be the Hearts of Darkness (which was a look at Coppola’s troubled Apocalypse Now set) for Megalopolis, which opened in theaters last year. The only problem is that Megalopolis not only flopped big time, but it’s just not a good movie by any measure, and Coppola doesn’t get this. Oh well. Yes he spent tons of money on it (and comments on that in here), and he’s trying to be bold and provocative again, but it’s a complete mess. This Megadoc look at the chaos of filmmaking features appearances by Francis Ford Coppola (but of course!), Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, Chloe Fineman, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, Robert De Niro, and more. It just premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival & Telluride Film Festival last week, and will be out to watch in limited theaters later this month. Not long of a wait at all! Who wants to watch this?

Here’s the main official trailer for Mike Figgis’ making of doc film Megadoc, direct from YouTube:

Megadoc Trailer

Megadoc Trailer

You can rewatch the teaser trailer for Mike Figgis’ Megadoc film right here for the first look again.

This September: A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, Megalopolis. The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ compelling portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis. This isn’t a record of a production on the brink, it’s a personal memoir unfolding in real time. Megadoc is directed by British indie filmmaker Mike Figgis, director of many films including Stormy Monday, Internal Affairs, Mr. Jones, The Browning Version, Leaving Las Vegas, One Night Stand, Miss Julie, Timecode, Hotel, Cold Creek Manor, Love Live Long, Suspension of Disbelief, and Somebody Up There Likes Me previously. Produced by Tara Li-An and James Mockoski. This is premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival coming up this fall. Utopia will debut Figgis’ Megadoc in select US theaters starting on September 19th, 2025 for everyone to watch. Who’s in?

Cardi B is one of the biggest rappers in the world, but for her, being a mom is the most important. The “I Like It” hitmaker adores her three children — Kulture, Wave and Blossom — and has continued to balance motherhood with a thriving career in music and entertainment. Since welcoming her first child in 2018, Cardi, whose full name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, has been open about the challenges of juggling fame and family life. In a January 2022 Vogue cover story, she admitted that it can be “hard to balance” but added, “If I’m playing with my daughter, I forget about the issues.”

Now officially dating NFL star Stefon Diggs and in the middle of a public split from husband Offset, Cardi is entering a new chapter—one that’s come with renewed attention on her personal life. Though she previously called off a 2020 divorce for the sake of her family, her latest filing signals a more permanent break. Still, she remains deeply committed to raising her kids and embracing her role as a mom.

To learn more about Cardi and her kids, keep reading!

Kulture Kiari Cephus

It was big news when Cardi announced she was pregnant with her first child back in 2018. She courted baby rumors for months before debuting her baby bump in a major way during her Apr. 7 performance on Saturday Night Live. While rapping to her track “Be Careful”, the camera panned out to show the beauty’s belly wrapped in a tight, white Christian Siriano gown.

The fashionista didn’t stop with the fabulous maternity looks. During the next month’s 2018 Met Gala in May, she rocked a glorious Moschino gown inspired by the evening’s theme “The Catholic Imagination.” Cardi also let slip she was having a girl during the soiree.

Beautiful little Kulture was born on July 10, 2018. Cardi announced the news with a stunning shot of her nude and pregnant. Keeping the message simple, she shared, “Kulture Kiari Cephus 07/10/18” and tagged Offset.

Kulture’s birth wasn’t a cakewalk for Cardi. Talking about her post-partum healing process during a stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Oct. 2021, she was blunt. “It was totally harder [than I expect],” Cardi said. “She broke my vagina.” The hilarious star asked the audience, “Why nobody tells you about those things? Nobody told me they were gonna stitch my vagina!”

Now that Kulture’s a bit bigger, she’s totally taken after her parents’ stylish ways. The toddler, who has over 2.2million Instagram followers, regularly shows off matching looks with mom and dad on social media. So cute!

Wave Set Cephus

Cardi waited three years to give Kulture a little brother. The star announced her 2nd child’s birth on Sep. 4, 2021 via Instagram, sharing a sweet photo of herself wrapped in a Louis Vuitton blanket while cradling her little one from her hospital bed.

“We are so overjoyed to finally meet our son. He is already loved so much by family and friends and we can’t wait to introduce him to his other siblings,” Cardi and Offset said in a statement via email to Hollywood Life. Offset also posted a sweet candid photo cuddling the baby boy. “Chapter 5,” he wrote in his caption.

The star’s 2nd pregnancy reveal was even wilder than the first. She debuted her belly during the Jun. 27, 2021 BET Awards, singing her hip “Type S***” in a sheer, mesh catsuit covered in crystals everywhere except a cut-out on her tummy.

The Invasion of Privacy artist was more private about Wave’s welcoming than her first baby. She strategically avoided sharing his face and his name until over 7 months after his birth, waiting for Apr. 2022 for the big reveal.

Cardi was so excited to give Kulture a little sibling. In a June 2021 maternity shoot with her daughter, the Grammy-winner hoped the kids’ future relationship would mirror her connection to sister Hennessy Carolina. “I just know these two will love each other so much and argue so much since they’re three years apart, just like me and [my sister]. But one thing for sure is they’ll have each other’s back like no one else ever will.”

Still, the star took her time before thinking about her 2nd kid. Back in 2019, a source close to the rap queen revealed EXCLUSIVE details to Hollywood Life. They told the site, that while Cardi “definitely wants to grow her family at some point,” she wanted to take her time. “[She] really wants to make sure the time is right before making a big leap like that,” the insider explained.

Blossom

Cardi revealed she had welcomed a baby girl by sharing the first adorable photos of her newborn with her older children. The star was reunited with Offset in the delivery room and posted more images of the family doting on the new baby—whose name has yet to be announced.

“The prettiest lil thing 🌸🌸 9/7/24 💖💖💖,” Cardi wrote via Instagram on Thursday, September 12, alongside a slideshow of photos and videos from her hospital room.

The rapper announced her pregnancy on Instagram in August 2024, sharing her excitement and gratitude: “With every ending comes a new beginning! I am so grateful to have shared this season with you; you have brought me more love, more life, and most of all, renewed my power! Reminded me that I can have it all!” she wrote, addressing her third child. “You’ve reminded me that I never have to choose between life, love, and my passion!”

She continued: “I love you so much and cannot wait for you to witness what you helped me accomplish, what you pushed me to do! It’s so much easier taking life’s twists, turns, and tests lying down, but you, your brother, and your sister have shown me why it’s worth it to push through!”

Cardi B’s Stepkids

Not only is Cardi a great mom to her own kids, but she was also a stepmother to Offset’s three other children. The “Motorsport” rapper shares son Jordan with Justine Watson, son Kody with Oriel Jamie, and daughter Kalea with Shya L’Amour.

The rapper loves her stepkids and told Vogue, Offset’s other children were anything but a dealbreaker. “When I was pregnant with Kulture, a lot of people [were] like, ‘Oh, he has three kids already; why would you have a kid with somebody that has three kids?’” she wondered back in Dec. 2019. “It’s like, how is that such a bad thing?

“My dad has eight kids, and we all get along, and it feels better, fuller. And with Offset, I feel like his kids just bring a pop of fun to life when they’re in his house. I actually love it. It brings out a different side of him that I like to see, and I love to see my baby interacting with her siblings. The more the merrier.”

Offset gushed about Cardi’s parenting skills in 2021 during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “My other kids who ain’t hers… [she] gives them love the same way,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

Offset and Cardi, however, split in 2024.

Venice 2025: Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘A House of Dynamite’ is Staggering

by Alex Billington
September 2, 2025

Whoa. Kathryn Bigelow just made a surprise sequel to Oppenheimer. This is one of the most intensely thrilling movies of the year. Goodness gracious. My palms are still sweaty writing about it now hours after the screening. A House of Dynamite, which should’ve kept the original title as stated in the dialogue, A House Filled with Dynamite, is the first feature film made by Kathryn Bigelow since making Detroit in 2017. She’s back with a fury, with a vengeance, with a story that is going to stir things up and get people talking. But of course – that’s the point. The whole movie is designed to get people to start discussing, well, everything about the state of the world right now. It’s not really a sequel to Oppenheimer but it actually kind of fits because it’s the most vivid continuation of the second half of that masterpiece movie. Nuclear fears are back and more powerful than ever in the real world. And this movie wonders: what would we do in only 20 minutes if there was a single nuclear missile fired towards a major American city? How would the US respond? What would happen? Would the President “push the button” and retaliate with more nukes? It doesn’t actually give any answers but it does get us thinking about the actual answers to all these questions.

Directed by gritty military thriller mastermind filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow, A House of Dynamite features a screenplay written by former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim (also writer of the scripts for Jackie & “Zero Day”). The concise setup: When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible & how to respond. The film also features a Rashomon narrative concept – three different storylines presented as a triptych. In each, we follow a group of people in various American government / military positions figuring out what to do and how to respond within the 20 minute ticking clock countdown after discovering the missile, verifying it, and tracking it as it flies on towards the continental US. A House of Dynamite is actually very specifically not political, it’s rather neutral, telling a mechanical “how would a government realistically respond” procedural thriller story. It’s all a fantasy, with Idris Elba as the current US President. It is not commenting on real world politics, nor is it commenting on America or its imperialism or jingoism or anything like that. It’s ultimately a story about how any nation would be on edge, how the entire world would be completely fucked, if anyone sends a missile towards any other nation. It’s meant to get us thinking but not comment on America’s issues aside from stockpiling our own nukes. The only thing it does want to remind us: we cannot fuck this up if this ever does really happen.

The first segment of A House of Dynamite focuses on White House staffers in the situation room, featuring Rebecca Ferguson, as well as military men at a base in Alaska (featuring Anthony Ramos) that are the first to notice the missile and then fire off the preventative countermeasures meant to intercept and stop the missile. It’s the most intense of the segments because it sets up the story. By the time the 20 minutes runs out you’ll be shaking with fear, trembling with trepidation realizing how realistic of a “holy shit” situation this really would be. The second segment follows the Secretary of Defense and higher up military, providing a more hard-edged POV showing them realizing that they think the only right way to respond to this is to fire off preemptive response nukes before this one hits. It’s just as thrilling but in a much different way. The third segment, pulling everything together, focuses on the President himself & his POV as he’s the one who, at the end of the 20 minute countdown, must decided how to respond and what to do. Let’s just be honest – if there really was a missile fired and we couldn’t stop it and it was about to strike a city, there’s no way any evacuation would work and nothing could be done. We’d (meaning the military & gov) have to respond after no matter what. But do you wait & find out? This is what makes this story such an intense examination of modern nuclear fears. This ain’t the days of the atomic bomb anymore, these are massive, scary, fast nukes.

Just as with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty before this, the filmmaking is exceptionally realistic. This is what Bigelow is extraordinary at thanks to years of understanding real government & military inner workings. So many Hollywood movies are cheesy, making everything from the situation room to the missile buttons look fake, but in this movie everything is specifically accurate. Almost too real. It’s about a realistic response (give or take what is currently happening with the fascist takeover in the actual US government in the real world) to this possibility. Including the idea that 20 minutes is an extremely limited amount of time and Hollywood loves to make 20 minutes look like 2 hours when that’s just not the case. There’s a line of dialogue where within minutes of the missile striking, the US President says “give me a minute” and it cuts the clock and the audience let out a very cathartic, loud chuckle because it very seriously is “holy shit we don’t have a minute, Mr. President.” I deeply appreciate this portrayal of realism because it’s exactly what made got my heart racing. I haven’t been this wrecked watching a movie in a while. One of the big questions on my mind: will this be just as thrilling to watch knowing how it all plays out? Once people have figured it out, will they be sitting at home watching it and still feeling the intense thrill of the story? Or not? I’m lucky I had a chance to watch this film on the big screen without knowing anything before it began – because that experience was unforgettably breathtaking. I was literally wiping away sweat on my brow for nearly 2 hours.

The other remarkably clever trick in this is Bigelow’s cast. There’s a huge ensemble of so many recognizable actors. One of my favorite meta tricks is that she casts actors playing the very same character they’ve played in other series or films already. Idris Elba just played the UK Prime Minister in the streaming movie Heads of State. Actor Gabriel Basso plays a secret agent at the White House who gets involved in a conspiracy when an attack happens in the very successful series The Night Agent on Netflix. In here he is also playing almost the same character – a person working in a top secret role at the White House. Whether or not she made all of these casting choices consciously, I’m not sure, though I have to believe she did. But the point is that they ultimately connect to the bigger idea of what she’s trying to do with A House of Dynamite. The film is making us rationalize and realize the scariness of modern, real world nuclear fears, and using these actors playing similar roles forces viewers to pull themselves out of the fantasy of these other stories and, for two hours, seriously think about real world implications of us vs them. Oppenheimer ends with the exact same message. The great fear of nukes in this current day & age is that, if anyone ever actually fires one, the world will be changed forever. There’s no going back then. But if that happens, we (meaning whomever is actually pushing buttons) must carefully decide how to respond without obliterating the rest of the planet. Will they?

Sheinelle Jones isn’t just a familiar face on Today — she’s also a devoted mom. Earlier this year, she stepped away from the show to focus on her family when her husband died. So, how many children does Sheinelle have, and what has she shared about raising them?

Learn more about Sheinelle’s family below.

How Many Kids Does Sheinelle Jones Have?

Sheinelle Jones shares three children with her late husband, Uche Ojeh, whom she met at Northwestern University. They share children Kayin, Clara and Uche.

Unfortunately, Sheinelle’s husband, Uche, died in May 2025 from an aggressive form of brain cancer known as Glioblastoma. He was 45 years old.

Kayin Ojeh

Kayin is the oldest of her children. On his 14th birthday, Sheinelle captioned her social media post: “14 years in 14 seconds. The years are flying by! I love you Kayin. Happy Birthday!” This past holiday season, the beaming mama bear took her son to the White House’s holiday party, where he got to meet President Joe Biden. In April 2023, all three of her children visited the TODAY studio and appeared on-air, as their mother smiled in awe. Her son is passionate about broadcast journalism, just like his successful mom. In 2021, Kayin had the surreal experience of interviewing one of his favorite authors, Jeff Kinney, who wrote the notorious book, Diary of A Wimpy Kid. But it wasn’t just for an impressive school project. Instead, it was for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt: Kids Edition, according to Yahoo! While Sheinelle was broadcasting for Today, the gushing TV host said his on-air interviewing was a “proud mama moment.”

Clara & Uche Jr.

The fraternal twins are very passionate about pickleball. Just like their older brother, they also had Instagram-worthy moments with celebrities that they look up to. In 2023, they both visited the U.S. Open and had the chance to play a pickleball match with tennis pros. Sheinelle posted a slideshow of her twins posing next to tennis legends such as Venus Williams. She jokingly captioned her post: “So normally when you watch the U.S. Open, you don’t hear a mom in the audience cheering for the ball kids…but this mom did for her twins. It was all in good fun for a kick-off event with a friendly match of pickleball between some of the world’s top tennis champions. Fun night of fellowship before these guys get down to the real business!”

The TV star enjoys celebrating her children’s milestones and took the twins to New Jersey’s DreamWorks Water Park for their birthday in 2023. The doting mother loves sharing her favorite moments on social media. She captioned another post: “I can’t remember the last time I was on a water slide! We had so much fun. An early 11th birthday celebration for the twins before their friends spread out over the summer! The parents had just as much fun as the kids. Cheers to the summer!”
