Charlie Kirk, the outspoken conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, died in September 2025 at the age of 31. In the aftermath of his sudden passing, many have been reflecting not only on his work and influence but also on his personal life and family.

Born and raised in Illinois, Charlie often credited his upbringing for shaping the values that fueled his activism, yet details about his relatives remain less widely known. With questions circulating about his parents, wife, children — and whether he had any brothers or sisters — here’s what we know about the family behind the controversial activist.

Where Is Charlie Kirk From?

Charlie was born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He grew up in Prospect Heights, Illinois, in what has been described as a “politically moderate household,” though he later became one of the country’s most outspoken conservative activists. During his school years, he attended Wheeling High School, where he played football and basketball, joined the marching band, and became active in the Eagle Scouts, per his LinkedIn.

Arlington Heights Mayor Jim Tinaglia paid tribute after Charlie’s death, noting in a statement that he shared “deep ties to our community.”

In the wake of Charlie’s death, public reporting has consistently focused on his parents, wife, and children, with no confirmed mention of siblings.

Who Is Charlie Kirk’s Wife?

Charlie was married to Erika Lane Frantzve Kirk, crowned Miss Arizona USA in 2012 and later known as a podcaster, entrepreneur, and ministry leader. Erika played college basketball, studied political science and international relations at Arizona State University, and went on to earn a Juris Master in American Legal Studies from Liberty University. She launched BIBLEin365, a program designed to encourage daily scripture reading, and created Proclaim Streetwear, a faith-based clothing line. Erika and Charlie met in 2018, got engaged in 2020, and married in May 2021.

“I understand the need to find yourself, find your family… I simply said: Frances, this is your grandpa, Jim. But he thought grandpa sounded too old so he gave himself a new name: Jimpa.” Kismet down in Australia has unveiled the first official trailer for a lovely film about family called Jimpa, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It’s the newest film made by the Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde (following Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and has no US release set yet. Jimpa will have its Australian premiere as the Opening Night film at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival in October. Hannah and her non-binary teenager Frances visits her gay grandfather Jimpa living in Amsterdam. Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather for a year, challenging Hannah’s parenting beliefs and forcing her to confront past issues. Starring John Lithgow as Jimpa, Olivia Colman as Hannah, Aud Mason-Hyde as Frances, with Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Kate Box, and Daniel Henshall. “With warmth, humour and joy, Jimpa reminds us that, in every family, there are stories that don’t add up.” I’m very happy to be quoted in this trailer from my Sundance review. I still think it is a wonderfully warm, tender, worthwhile film… Enjoy.

Here’s the first official Australian trailer for Sophie Hyde’s film Jimpa, direct from Kismet’s YouTube:

Jimpa Trailer

Jimpa Trailer

Jimpa is an uplifting multi-generational family story starring favourites Olivia Colman & John Lithgow. Hannah (Colman) travels to vibrant Amsterdam with her non-binary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to reconnect with her politically-engaged, gay father—affectionately known as “Jimpa” (Lithgow). Frances is besotted with Jimpa and announces they wish to stay with him for a year – to Hannah’s apprehension. Jimpa is fiercely independent, so it is a shock when his declining health is revealed, upending Frances’ plans and bringing Hannah’s sister in from the UK. As the siblings negotiate what happens next, Hannah must confront her past & stories she has told about her family. Jimpa is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde, director of the films 52 Tuesdays, Animals, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is written by Sophie Hyde and Matthew Cormack. Produced by Liam Heyen, Bryan Mason, Marleen Slot, Sophie Hyde. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). The film opens first in Australia coming up after playing at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival. No US release is set – expected in early 2026. Who’s interested?

Inside Ricky Hatton’s Health & Drug Struggles Before His Death – Hollywood Life

Just two months before he was supposed to make his boxing comeback, Ricky Hatton died at 46 years old. Naturally, fans and friends in the sports world were heartbroken and wanted answers regarding his cause of death, which has yet to be confirmed. However, some may recall that Hatton opened up about health struggles during his final years — specifically, with mental health and drugs.

Below, Hollywood Life is breaking down what we know about Hatton’s life before death.

Ricky Hatton’s Mental Health Struggles

In August 2023, Hatton sat down with Daily Mail to discuss the aftermath of his fights against Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, both of which he lost.

“After the Mayweather fight, I started drinking a lot more heavily, and ultimately, I fell out with my parents, and that was difficult for me and I did not care if I lived or died,” Hatton said, before admitting, “I contemplated suicide many, many times. I started thinking of different ways to get through it, and I thought I could drink myself to death.”

Hatton elaborated by confessing he “couldn’t walk down the street” after his defeats because he was “so embarrassed,” adding, “I didn’t want to show my face. I know that seems a bit strong but that’s what was in my mind.”

“I thought everyone was looking at me saying, ‘He told us he was going to beat Mayweather and he didn’t,’” the late world champion explained. “It’s a shame really but was the start of my mental health struggles.”

Hatton was also concerned that his son, Campbell Hatton, could inherit his late father’s struggles.

“There’s a possibility Campbell could experience the same mental health problems as me,” Hatton said. “I have said to Campbell, ‘If there is anything on your mind, come to me.’ I nearly wasn’t here to enjoy the things that I am loving today. Spending time with my grandfather and seeing Campbell turn professional. Seeing my girls turning into the young ladies they are today. I nearly wasn’t here to experience that, as I was suicidal. So, I will hammer him every day asking if he’s OK.”

Ricky Hatton’s Drug Use Before Death

In that same interview with Daily Mail, Hatton pointed to his past drug use in addition to drinking. “So, consequently I got more depressed, and I ended up taking drugs to enable me to drink more, and it was a vicious circle,” he said.

In mid-2018, a video of Hatton’s cocaine usage surfaced, and he entered rehab, according to multiple outlets.

How Did Ricky Hatton Die? His Cause of Death

Hatton’s official cause of death has not been determined by the time of publication. Authorities were called to Hatton’s Hyde, Greater Manchester, England, home, where he was found dead. Greater Manchester Police noted his death was not considered “suspicious” in a public statement.

If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Why Is ‘The Bear’ Considered a Comedy? Its Emmys Category Explained – Hollywood Life

The Bear has invited countless viewers into the world of running a restaurant. For better or worse, each character of the show goes through their own emotional rides in their personal and work lives. So, why would such a dramatic series be considered a comedy at the Emmy Awards and other awards shows?

Hollywood Life breaks down the reason behind The Bear’s category, below.

Why Is ‘The Bear’ Considered a Comedy?

The show encompasses a wide variety of categories, as it’s widely considered to be a psychological comedy-drama. However, the show focuses on dark humor. Even with difficult topics such as mental health, breakups, abusive bosses, and more dramatic situations, The Bear implements enough dark humor to elicit some uncomfortable laughs out of its audience.

Take the season 1 finale, for example. Viewers have wondered how on earth that wild — and aggressive — scene could be considered funny. Ayo Edebiri‘s Sydney stabs Ebon Moss-Bachrach‘s Richie with a kitchen knife, and they get into a tense altercation. Meanwhile, Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmy screams over the cacophony of kitchen chaos while struggling to hold down the fort. Then, to make matters worse, Sydney quits.

By seasons 2 and 3, viewers have more backstories to unpack, from Carmy’s trauma to Sydney’s anxiety. However, the show manages to inject enough sarcasm, wit and irony to make it funny.

After fans watched Carmy unknowingly break his girlfriend Claire’s heart, the aftermath still has its humorous moments. Toward the end of season 3, Carmy is asked whether or not he thinks about Claire anymore, to which he nonchalantly responds that he thinks of her every day.

Come season 4 is even more drama! Between Carmy and Claire’s argument to his mother’s admission of abuse, viewers learned how much pain he’s been living with.

Who Is in ‘The Bear’ Cast?

Apart from Ayo, Jeremy and Ebon, the rest of The Bear cast includes Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliot, Matty Matheson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Edwin Lee Gibson, Oliver Platt. Molly Gordon and several others.

“Oh boy ladies & gentlemen, have I got a treat for you!” Black Bear Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for Christy, hot on the heels of its successful premiere at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival last week. Christy is now set for a US release in theaters nationwide starting in November later this fall. “What does it take to become a legend?” The sports movie tells the story of of Christy Martin, the most successful female boxer of the 1990s. From the TIFF description: “Featuring a career-best performance from Sydney Sweeney, the latest from David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) chronicles groundbreaking boxer Christy Martin’s fierce story of self-actualization in the face of terrifying adversity…” They also add: “Dealing with themes of misogyny, domestic violence, and sexual identity, the film does justice to Christy’s journey by being frank about the obstacles she overcame.” Critics have been saying Sweeney is awards worthy in this, with a strong emotional lead role as Christy. The cast also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad Coleman, Bryan Hibbard, and Gilbert Cruz. It looks like yet another cliche boxing movie like so many others before it, but it also seems to throw some strong punches of its own. Take a look.

Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for David Michôd’s movie Christy, direct from YouTube:

Christy Trailer

Christy Poster

Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life. Christy is directed by Australian filmmaker David Michôd, director of the films Animal Kingdom, The Rover, War Machine, and The King previously, as well as a few shorts. The screenplay is written by Mirrah Foulkes and David Michôd; story by Katherine Fugate. Produced by Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel, Justin Lothrop, David Michôd, Sydney Sweeney. This just premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Fest this month. Black Bear Pictures releases Michôd’s Christy movie in US theaters on November 7th, 2025.

What We Know About His Daughter – Hollywood Life

Malcolm-Jamal Warner is survived by his family, whom he kept as far away from the limelight as possible. The late actor, who was famous for playing Theo on The Bill Cosby Show, died in July 2025 while on a trip to Costa Rica. He was 54. His cause of death was ruled to be asphyxia from drowning. As fans grapple with the loss of Malcolm-Jamal, many are wondering if he had children with his wife, Tenisha Warner, whose identity was kept private.

Below, learn about Malcolm-Jamal’s family.

Who Is Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Wife?

Malcolm-Jamal’s wife’s name is Tenisha, which she announced in September 2025. He chose to maintain his family’s privacy through the end of his life.

Did Malcolm-Jamal Warner Have Kids?

Yes, Malcolm-Jamal shared one daughter with his wife. While he rarely discussed his child, the 9-1-1 actor opened up about meeting his wife for the first time and how she changed his mind about having kids during a May 2025 appearance on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast.

“So, after being in a relationship for six years, I spent the next two years like a man who had been in a relationship for six years. … I went on this hiatus, like I was cold turkey — like not dating, not relationships, mostly not sex,” Malcolm-Jamal recalled. “So, I was in this space, and I met my wife through a mutual friend. And because I was on this hiatus, I was like, ‘I’m not really dating.’ And our mutual friend was like, ‘Well one date won’t hurt. You know, she could be a really cool friend or a really cool spiritual connect.’ I was like, ‘That’s cool.’”

After pointing out that he was “at peace with not having kids,” Malcolm-Jamal said his future wife told him on their first date that she was “definitely having kids.”

“So, it was great. We are not on the same page at all,” Malcolm-Jamal joked about their date. Less than six months later, he realized he only wanted to start a family with her.

Who Is Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Daughter?

Warner and his family have kept the identity of his daughter away from the public eye. Therefore, her name is unknown.

Though he never revealed his daughter’s name, Warner occasionally shared family photos via Instagram. In June 2018, he rang in Father’s Day by sharing a picture of himself holding his baby girl.

“So, there’s this girl. She kinda stole my heart. She calls me Daddy,” Malcolm-Jamal wrote, adding, “(And sometimes her mom does too. I mean she did steal my heart first. … As I look back at my wonderful journey thus far, look at my beautiful life right now, and look at the still bright future ahead of me, I know that I am Hands Down one of the luckiest and most blessed men alive. Happy Father’s Day to the Dads doing the damn thing outchea [sic] and to the Moms who have to be Mommy and Daddy to theirs. You rock!”

Days after Malcolm-Jamal’s death, early reports claimed he had died trying to save his daughter from drowning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. Elberth León, head of the Tourist Police for Costa Rica’s Atlantic region, initially told Us Weekly that both Malcolm-Jamal and his daughter had been dragged by the ocean current, and while nearby witnesses were able to rescue his daughter, they couldn’t reach him in time. However, PEOPLE and other outlets later clarified that his daughter was not actually in the water during the incident.

“Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend of his entered the sea,” a statement from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), translated from Spanish to English, said.

When Was Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Daughter Born?

Malcolm-Jamal’s daughter was born in 2017.

How Much Does a NBA Agent Make in 2025? Complete Guide to Salary, Commission, and Career

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

An NBA agent usually earns 4% of a player’s NBA contract and 10–20% from endorsements. That means a rookie agent might make around $30,000–$50,000 from a first contract, while mid-level agents often earn six figures. The real money comes at the top super-agents like Rich Paul can make $50M+ per year by managing stars and handling major endorsement deals. On average, sports agents across all sports earn about $61,000 yearly, but NBA agents typically earn far more because of the league’s massive contracts and global marketing power.

When an NBA superstar signs a deal worth hundreds of millions, people often wonder who made it happen. The spotlight shines on the player, but behind the scenes, an agent is the one negotiating every detail.

Take LeBron James for example. When he signed his $154 million contract, his agent earned millions just from that single deal. It sounds like a dream job, but the truth is not every agent lives at that level.

Many fans search for answers because the money in basketball is huge and mysterious. How much does an NBA agent really make? What does the job involve? And how do you even become one?

This guide walks you through everything. You will learn how agents earn their money, the commission rules, what their daily work looks like, and even who the richest agents in the game are. By the end, you will have a complete picture without needing to look anywhere else.

NBA Player Agent Salary Breakdown

So how much do NBA agents really earn from their players? The answer depends on the size of the contract, the level of the player, and the endorsements that come with it. Let’s break it down step by step.

Commission from NBA Contracts

NBA agents make their money mostly from player contracts. The NBPA sets a 4% cap on commissions. That means if a player signs a $1 million contract, the agent gets $40,000. If the deal is $100 million, the agent takes home $4 million.

For rookies, the numbers are much smaller. A first contract might pay an agent around $30,000 to $50,000. Still, every career has to start somewhere, and these deals help agents build relationships with future stars.

When a player reaches veteran or superstar level, the numbers explode. A max contract can give an agent a payday in the millions just from one negotiation.

Endorsements and Marketing Deals

Endorsements are often where agents earn even more. While contracts are capped at 4%, marketing deals allow agents to take 10% to 20% commission.

Think about shoe deals with Nike, or sponsorships with brands like Gatorade. These can be worth tens of millions. For some agents, endorsements bring in more income than contracts.

For example, if a star signs a $50 million shoe deal, the agent could pocket $5 million to $10 million just from that single endorsement.

Average vs. Top Agents

Not every agent is Rich Paul or Jeff Schwartz. The average sports agent across all leagues makes around $61,000 per year. NBA agents, because of the size of contracts, usually earn much more than this.

Mid-level NBA agents often make low six figures. They represent solid players but not household names. On the other hand, super-agents who manage global stars earn tens of millions every year.

It’s a world of extremes. Some agents struggle to stay afloat, while a few control billion-dollar deals and live at the very top of the sports business.

Salary Comparison Table

Player LevelTypical Contract ValueAgent Fee (4%)Endorsement Cut (10–20%)Estimated Agent Income
Rookie$1–2 million$40K–$80K$10K–$50K$50K–$130K
Veteran$10–50 million$400K–$2M$200K–$2M$600K–$4M
Superstar$100–200 million$4M–$8M$5M–$20M+$10M–$30M+

This breakdown shows the huge gap between new agents working with rookies and the super-agents negotiating for NBA’s biggest stars.

NBA Agent Commission Percentage Explained

Every NBA agent earns money through commission. But the percentage is not random. It is set by the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association).

The rule is simple. An agent can only take up to 4% of a player’s NBA contract. No more. That means if a player signs a $100 million contract, the maximum agent fee is $4 million.

It sounds huge, and it is. But this cap also protects players from losing too much of their income.

Outside of contracts, agents can earn more through endorsements. With shoe deals, commercials, and sponsorships, they can take 10% to 20% commission. This is why deals with brands like Nike or Adidas sometimes bring agents more money than the player’s actual NBA salary.

Compared to other sports, the NBA is very agent-friendly. NFL agents are limited to about 3% commission. In MLB and the NHL, there is no official cap, but contracts are smaller on average.

This makes basketball one of the most profitable sports for agents. A single superstar contract can change an agent’s career overnight.

What Do NBA Agents Do?

An NBA agent is more than just a middleman. Think of them as the player’s business manager, lawyer, and career coach all rolled into one. Their job is to protect the player’s interests and make sure every opportunity is maximized.

Here is what they actually do:

  • Negotiate contracts: Agents fight for the best salaries, bonuses, and player options. They know the rules of the league and use them to give their client the strongest deal possible.
  • Secure endorsements: From shoe deals to commercials, agents connect players with global brands. These endorsements often make players, and their agents, more money than NBA contracts.
  • Guide careers: Agents help players make smart choices about trades, team fit, and long-term goals. They look at the big picture, not just the next season.
  • Manage image and PR: Many agents assist with media relations and branding. A good public image increases endorsement value and career longevity.
  • Provide legal and financial advice: Agents connect players with lawyers, accountants, and financial planners. This ensures players protect their wealth and avoid mistakes.
  • Recruit new talent: Agents are always looking for the next star. Building a roster of players keeps their business growing.

Day to day, an NBA agent is on calls, in meetings, and negotiating deals. One moment they might be finalizing a shoe contract, and the next, advising a rookie on which team could be the best fit.

In short, NBA agents make sure players can focus on basketball while they handle everything else.

How to Become a NBA Agent

So, you want to become an NBA agent? Imagine sitting courtside, watching your client sign a multi-million-dollar deal that you helped negotiate. It sounds exciting, but the journey takes patience, education, and the right connections.

Here’s how the process works, step by step:

  1. Get your degree
Most agents start with a bachelor’s degree. Common choices are law, business, or sports management. These fields teach you how contracts, negotiations, and marketing work. If you want an edge, an MBA or law degree makes you even more competitive.
  2. Apply through the NBPA
To represent NBA players, you must be certified by the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). This is the official union for players, and they regulate agents. Without this certification, you cannot legally represent anyone in the league.
  3. Pay the application fee
The process isn’t free. Expect to pay around $1,500 just to apply. Once approved, you’ll also need to cover annual fees, which can be $2,500 or more depending on how many clients you represent.
  4. Pass a background check
The NBPA wants agents with a clean record. They’ll check your financial history, legal standing, and overall credibility. Any red flags can end your chances.
  5. Take the NBPA exam
Next comes the big test. The NBPA exam covers contract rules, salary caps, collective bargaining agreements, and ethical responsibilities. You’ll need to study hard because this exam is tough.
  6. Maintain your certification
Passing the exam is just the beginning. Every year, you must renew your certification, pay your fees, and stay updated on rule changes. The NBA is always evolving, so you need to keep learning.

Becoming an NBA agent isn’t just about paperwork and exams. It’s about building trust, networking with players, and proving that you can handle high-stakes negotiations. The path is demanding, but for those who make it, the rewards can be life-changing.

Richest NBA Agents

Some NBA agents earn more in a year than many players make in a lifetime. They handle superstar clients and huge contracts, making them power players behind the scenes.

Rich Paul, founder of Klutch Sports, manages stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He can earn over $50 million a year from contracts and endorsements.

Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports has negotiated deals worth over $100 million for multiple players. Agents like Bill Duffy and Mark Bartelstein also represent elite talent and handle contracts totaling billions.

The gap between average agents and super-agents is huge. Most earn six-figure incomes, while the top few make tens of millions. Success requires skill, trust, and strong relationships with superstar players.

Sports Agent Income vs. Sports Agent Salary

Many people get confused between a sports agent’s income and salary. Here’s the truth: NBA agents don’t earn a fixed salary. They work on commission. That means their earnings depend entirely on the deals they negotiate.

The average “sports agent salary” in the United States is around $61,000 according to government data. But NBA agents usually make much more because basketball contracts are huge. Even a single rookie contract can bring in tens of thousands, while superstar deals generate millions.

Endorsements add another layer. Agents can earn 10–20% from shoe deals, sponsorships, and commercials. In many cases, these endorsement commissions exceed the agent’s earnings from the player’s NBA contract.

Compared to other sports, the NBA is the most lucrative league for agents. NFL agents earn less due to lower commission caps, while MLB and NHL contracts are smaller on average. This makes basketball the top choice for agents who want to maximize income.

In short, a sports agent’s income is flexible, commission-driven, and often much higher than the average salary suggests. The bigger the client, the bigger the paycheck.

Key Takeaways

  • NBA agents earn by commission, not a fixed salary.
  • They receive 4% from player contracts and 10–20% from endorsements.
  • Rookie contracts provide smaller fees, while superstar deals can generate millions.
  • Average sports agent earnings are around $61,000, but NBA agents usually earn much higher.
  • Only a few “super-agents” like Rich Paul make tens of millions annually.
  • Becoming an NBA agent requires NBPA certification, including education, exams, and background checks.
  • Success depends on skill, trust, networking, and managing elite players effectively.

Review: Romain Gavras Goes All-Out with His ‘Sacrifice’ Eco Thriller

by Alex Billington
September 12, 2025

Screening at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival. What does it take to really change the world? And who must make a sacrifice if that is ultimately what it takes? These are the foundational questions at the core of this bonkers new eco-thriller film titled Sacrifice, a world premiere at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival playing as a Special Presentation. By the time I watched the film and started writing this review, it has already been lambasted and torn apart by many critics at the festival, some even calling it one of the worst films at TIFF. I couldn’t disagree more. I can say it’s certainly not the best film of TIFF 2025, as it is a bit crass & obnoxious, though that’s on purpose. Yes there are tons of eco-thrillers being made these days, tons of new films about climate change and saving the planet and caring for nature, though few of them are actually making a real difference (unfortunately). What makes Sacrifice unique is it fully leans into the fantastical side of its story, a totally made-up, unrealistic tale of rebellion that is somehow still engaging and entertaining – even if it is ridiculous. But this is a refreshingly different vibe compared to all the more depressing, realistic eco cinema.

Sacrifice is co-written by Will Arbery and Romain Gavras, directed by French filmmaker Romain Gavras. It’s Gavras’ 4th feature film (following Our Day Will Come, The World Is Yours, and Athena) so far and his first in English. Like many filmmakers, he’s clearly pissed about climate change and the state of the world, he’s clearly upset about how little change is happening, though this film also shows he’s clearly tired of all the performative activism that doesn’t result in much of anything except clips “going viral” on social media. Sacrifice starts out with an disquieting premise: a bunch of other wealthy people go to an uber-wealthy tech idiot’s special charity event / party being hosted inside of a marble mine somewhere in Greece. One of the invited guests is Mike Tyler, a washed-out, falling-apart movie star played by Chris Evans. The uninvited guests are a group of eco warriors from a nearby island where a volcano is located, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy as their leader Joan. They take over the event and demand 3 people to be used as a sacrifice to stop the volcano from erupting and killing off all life. Damn, okay. Scary. Similar to Bugonia’s premise, these people seem totally nuts and their claims can’t be real – but maybe they are right? After another breakdown at the event, Mike gets mixed up with them and becomes their sort-of-spokesperson as they carry on with the plan.

This film rocks. It’s bold, wild, and brash yet still highly entertaining and all-out ambitious in its concept. I dig it. I dig what Gavras is going for here, even if it doesn’t all work. I really dig the way he sticks to the wild & crazy vision of a tribe of volcano warriors abducting people then bringing them to the volcano in order to fulfill their prophecy of saving the world from this volcano. This is not how it starts out – the first act feels like something closer to The Menu. But at some point their work there is done, it’s time to move on. And so Gavras keeps going, onward following Sam & Frodo & Gollum towards Mt Doom. It’s stylish & visually bold with an eye for wide angle, open lens cinematography to capture the grandeur of the doomsday story. Some of the negative reviews I’ve read claim Gavras’ execution is “muddled”, but I don’t know where that’s coming from. If anything, his execution & willingness to follow through is one the best parts about this. He doesn’t cut corners or stray or decide that maybe nah things will just end at this party. Perhaps there’s something to be said about how loud & annoying it often is, but this is often why many viewers do not connect with most eco cinema these days – they dislike all the preachiness. The good thing is this one is not actually preachy, because the point of the script is to mock the very people being so preachy (e.g. the character of Mike Tyler).

There is a meaningful point to this story, and I do think it’s a strong message that we should consider in the real world. Yes, it hits all the usual cliches about how rich people are the worst, how eco warriors are usually jerks, how the craziest people are often the most sane in this crazy world we live in. However, it takes us on a wild ride in the meantime. It’s not meant to be realistic. There isn’t really a volcano threatening the planet (🌋 or is there?) and this tribe of eco warriors isn’t an accurate presentation of any activist movement. It’s cinema. It’s purposefully brash, this is what Gavras enjoys when he makes films. Sacrifice is very clear and specific in its execution and premise, especially with regards to the volcano as the centerpiece. But it’s also big and loud and crazy in a way that I not everyone will be into – as evident with the polarizing reviews at TIFF. Anya Taylor-Joy is just having fun playing this more kooky role (she’s always good). Evans, though, is the best performance in this. He’s playing a complex character who is dealing with a boatload of emotions weighing on him at once. And he’s the one we’re meant to consider, to think about in relation to our actions and what we’re doing – or not – in hopes of helping solve the very real, very bad problem of climate change.

Kat Velasco Is Turning Chaos into Country Pop Gold – Hollywood Life

Kat Velasco has a talent for finding beauty in the unpredictable. The rising country-pop star doesn’t shy away from life’s chaos. She turns it into music that feels both deeply personal and instantly relatable.

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Velasco grew up in a home where music was always present. At just eight years old, she signed with a small agency and began performing in musical theatre and pageants. These early experiences taught her stage presence long before she ever stepped into a studio.

Whether it is small-town drama, heartbreak, or the thrill of chasing big dreams after moving to Nashville on her own, Velasco transforms it all into songs that stick. Her lyrics hit with the honesty of a late-night conversation, wrapped in melodies that belong on repeat.

“The best songs come from the real stuff,” she explains. “The good, the bad, the parts you think you will never get through — that is where the gold is.”

Her catalog shows a writer unafraid to take risks. The breakout single “Kitchen Sink,” inspired by growing up with three older brothers, taps into the unspoken rules of small-town life. “Burning Man” leans darker without losing its heart, “Paper Boy” turns personal moments into cautionary tales, “Leave Me Wild” reads like a mission statement, and “Let It Ride” confronts her own insecurities head-on.

Most recently, she released “Breaking My Own Heart,” a raw and emotionally charged anthem about self-sabotage and bracing for disappointment even when everything feels right, showcasing her powerhouse vocals and a bold step into darker territory.

Velasco’s life offstage carries the same spirit as her music. She embraces the unfiltered and the magical in equal measure, finding stories in late-night writing sessions at home, long beach days, and nights that turn into mornings. She says she writes best when she is surrounded by the little pieces of life that remind her of home.

That blend of authenticity and star power is why her fan base keeps growing. People see their own lives reflected in her music, and they connect with the way she tells her story.

Hollywood loves a personality who owns their narrative, and Kat Velasco is doing just that. With each song, she is proving that chaos is not something to hide. It is the secret ingredient that makes her shine.

The Brothers are back! Universal Pictures + Illumination have just announced the official title for the next Super Mario Bros movie animated sequel – it will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and arrives in theaters April 2026 around the world. This follow-up sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023 is a continuation of this story and these characters. But it sounds like they’re mixing things up just like the original video games. The first NES game was called Super Mario Bros. (1986) with two sequels – it wasn’t until 2007 that Nintendo released a game called Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features the same co-directors from the first film back again. The voice actors include Chris Pratt as Mario again, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. With more characters to be revealed before the release next year. Hopefully this turns out even better than the other movie! Crossing my fingers.

Yippee! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023 which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is co-directed by filmmakers Aaron Horvath (director of Teen Titans GO! To the Movies) and Michael Jelenic (a producer on Teen Titans Go!, ThunderCats Roar and other animated series) both of the first Super Mario Bros Movie. The screenplay is again written by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru). Based on the video game series from Nintendo, originally created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi in 1983 as an arcade game. Produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto. Made by Illumination Animation. Universal debuts The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in theaters worldwide on April 3rd, 2026 next spring. Excited to watch?
