Sitges 2025: Fascinating ‘Starman’ Documentary on NASA’s Gentry Lee

by Alex Billington
October 20, 2025

If you’re a space geek like me, who loves staring up at the stars 🌟 and wondering what’s out there, there’s always a lingering set of existential questions that will remain unanswered for a long time: “Are we alone in the universe? If there are trillions of planets where intelligent life could have evolved, then why have we not definitively seen or heard from anyone (yet)?” And what would life be like if you dedicated it entirely to this never-ending search for extraterrestrial life existing somewhere out there? This documentary does answer that question at least. Starman is a biopic doc from filmmaker Robert Stone (of Earth Days, Pandora’s Promise). Not to be confused with the 80s sci-fi classic also titled Starman starring Jeff Bridges as an alien – though I’m pretty sure any reference to this movie is on purpose. It’s also a reference to the classic David Bowie “Starman” song from 1972. Now we get a documentary version of “Starman” and it is indeed about a star man known as Gentry Lee – who spent his entire life working at NASA attempting to actually answer these questions about life elsewhere in the universe and how to find it – or at least find some evidence of it.

Directed by Robert Stone, and produced by Larry Franco, Starman is a documentary feature film profiling the life of Bert Gentry Lee – better known as Gentry Lee by his friends & colleagues. It premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival and I caught up with it at the Sitges Film Festival; though it’s not really science fiction – it’s all science non-fiction. I must admit I was not familiar with Gentry Lee before watching this but now I’m a huge fan. Most of all I just want to hang out with him and geek out about space, sci-fi, NASA, and everything else. One of the craziest parts of his story is that, just as his career at NASA was winding down, legendary sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke asked him to co-write a few books with him. Together they wrote the Rendezvous with Rama sequels & a few others. However, the doc still focuses on the bigger question on his mind. “Legendary NASA robotics engineer and best-selling science fiction author, Gentry Lee, has spent a lifetime seeking an answer to the ultimate cosmic question: Are we alone in the universe?” Well, there’s no definitive answer, though he does posit the possibility that the answer is no (meaning yes there are others) – we’re just unlikely to ever encounter them. You’ll have to watch the doc to find out the rest of his thoughts.

This is a seriously fascinating documentary to discover, I quite enjoyed it. It’s not really about the search for extraterrestrial life, it’s more of a biopic about this guy and his life and all that he achieved. He really, truly is one of the luckiest people alive who has lived such an astonishing life. It’s a portrait of someone who was blown away by and deeply inspired by the fervor for space exploration that thrived during the Apollo era – the 1969 Moon landing, the Mariner missions, and 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968, of course. He worked at NASA doing what most people dream of – figuring out real ways to actually find proof of life and visit other planets. He was friends with Carl Sagan and so many other genius minds of that era. I was inspired by his story but above all I just really love listening to super smart, super geeky people chatting about anything and everything. It provides this warm blanket of comfort & relief for me, like ahhh here’s another dude just like me, saying the same kooky, smart, crazy cool stuff that most people can’t stand, but here he is geeking out about it. And nerding out on these remarkable accomplishments and riffing on what humanity can do when it isn’t caught up in all this stupid shit down on Earth. Yeah man, I’m glad there’s a couple of us out there…

As is usual with most documentaries, if the viewer isn’t into the topic and isn’t intrigued by whatever he or she is talking about, they probably won’t enjoy watching the film. The filmmaking in this doc isn’t especially exciting or special – most of it is talking heads with archival footage, discussions, explanations, geek outs, and so on. But it kept my attention & entertained me nonetheless. The most interesting aspects are choices made to visualize certain concepts that Gentry Lee discusses, including using a set of light bulbs laid out in a big, empty warehouse to depict the concept of life existing elsewhere for a brief amount of time. The film is just the right length at around 85 minutes, but of course I would’ve happily listened to Gentry Lee go even deeper into theories, ideas, differently possibilities, stories about Sagan or NASA, and so on. Whether or not it was asked during the doc interview or just cut out in the final version, I’m not sure – but they don’t ever get into the recent interstellar object phenomena like the cylindrical ‘Oumuamua discovered in 2017 (that is eerily reminiscent of the spaceship in the Rendezvous with Rama books). Most importantly, I was moved by what he brings up at the end of the film and his final message to us all – let’s focus on saving this world first.

Is Asana Down Today? Update on the Tool Amid AWS Outage – Hollywood Life

Asana users faced unexpected downtime on October 20, 2025, after a major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage disrupted popular apps and tools across the internet. The project management platform was among several services impacted by the cloud provider’s technical failure, which caused login errors, syncing delays, and loading issues for teams around the world.

The outage began early Monday morning, when AWS reported a surge in “error rates and latencies” affecting multiple regions, leaving many workplace tools, including Asana, Canva, Slack, and Ring, temporarily offline. While Amazon later confirmed that the issue had been mitigated, users continued to experience sporadic interruptions throughout the day.

Below, get the latest updates on Asana’s service status and when the platform is expected to be fully back online.

What Is Asana?

According to the company’s site, Asana is described as “a leading work-management platform for human + AI collaboration,” serving more than 170,000 customers worldwide including major names like Accenture, Amazon, Anthropic and Suzuki.

Their mission: “To help humanity thrive by enabling the world’s teams to work together effortlessly.”

Is Asana Down Today?

Yes, Asana reported a widespread outage on October 20, 2025 that was tied to an underlying outage of AWS. Users around the world reported issues accessing the service, and Asana acknowledged the disruption via its status updates, linking it to the global AWS service disruption.

When Will Asana Be Back Up?

According to AWS, the core DNS and internal-network issue behind the global outage was “fully mitigated” early on October 20, 2025 (Eastern Time).

On its official status page, Asana confirmed that the “root cause has been fixed and we are monitoring recovery,” though some users in the U.S. continued to experience degraded performance shortly after. A later update reassured customers that “this incident has been resolved; error rates and latency have gone down and we’ve caught up on existing traffic.” The company also announced that a detailed postmortem report will be published within 72 hours.

What Apps and Services Were Impacted by the AWS Outage?

The AWS outage affected everything from workplace tools to entertainment and smart home devices. Popular apps like Snapchat, Reddit, Slack, Canva, Ring, and Venmo all went down or experienced major slowdowns, while gaming platforms including Fortnite and Roblox also reported connection issues. Several financial, e-commerce, and streaming services were briefly impacted as well, leaving users unable to log in or load content.

Why the App Isn’t Working & Its Status – Hollywood Life

Internet and social media users woke up to a mass outage on October 20, 2025, which was mostly attributed to an AWS failure. One of the services that was affected was the popular Ring Doorbell camera and its app, which provides customers with a live feed from their doorstep.

Below, get a status update on the Ring Doorbell service, and find out what happened to it today.

Is Ring Still Down?

Ring doesn’t appear to be completely down anymore for most users, but some are still reporting problems on Downdetector.

One user commented on Downdetector at around 10:00 a.m. ET, writing, “One of my cameras is showing as offline, but my doorbell camera is working. I unplugged the offline camera and plugged it back in and realized the “offline” camera was capturing static images before I unplugged it. Since plugging it back in, it is not.” Shortly thereafter, they updated their comment to note, “Unplugged it and plugged it in again and the snapshots updated for the time none were showing up. Security Camera is still offline. Doorbell camera is still working.”

At 11:37 a.m. ET, Ring acknowledged the problem in an X post, which read, “We are aware of a service interruption impacting multiple Ring systems. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to resolve the interruption.”

We are aware of a service interruption impacting multiple Ring systems. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to resolve the interruption. Please check for updates here: https://t.co/L6F0ilETk8

— Ring (@ring) October 20, 2025

Why Is the Ring Doorbell App Not Working?

The Ring service went down on October 20 due to the widespread AWS outage, which Amazon acknowledged. The company pointed to a “DNS issue.”

“The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now,” AWS said in a statement, per CNN. “Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution. Additionally, some services are continuing to work through a backlog of events such as Cloudtrail and Lambda.”

What Apps & Online Services Aren’t Working Today?

Quite a few online services went down today, October 20, including Snapchat, which is not owned by Amazon. Canva, Hulu, Disney and AT&T also faced problems, and airlines were even impacted. Delta and United airlines were impacted by the global online outage.

Major Internet Outage Status

The international online service outage even affected some of the U.K.’s banks in addition to the American airline companies, Delta and United.

According to University of Southampton’s computer networking expert Graeme Bragg, the problem was due to a DNS failure on Amazon’s part.

“This morning an issue affecting Amazon’s US East caused significant disruption, with the underlying cause attributed to a problem with DNS – the ‘phone book’ of the internet that helps computers find each other,” Bragg said, per The Independent.  “This has affected lots of services hosted in different regions because Amazon host a lot of their management infrastructure that other services depend on in that region. This is a significant outage because of how many companies rely on Amazon and the global scale of the impact.”

While the “underlying issue has now been resolved,” Bragg pointed out that it “will take some time to propagate across the internet.”

“Amazon’s servers also have a backlog of requests to work through, so it’s likely that we will see some disruption for the rest of the day,” Bragg added.

How Did Limp Bizkit Bassist Die? – Hollywood Life

Sam Rivers, the bassist and backup vocalist for the nu metal band Limp Bizkit, died on October 18, 2025. He was 48. His bandmates Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto and DJ Lethal announced the devastating news in an Instagram statement. While his death seemed sudden to some fans, many want to know what the cause was and whether or not he was battling any health issues in his final days.

“In Loving Memory of Our Brother, Sam Rivers,” Limp Bizkit’s Instagram tribute to Rivers began. “Today, we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat. Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound. From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced.”

Calling his talent “effortless,” the band added that Rivers’ “presence” is “unforgettable,” while his heart was “enormous.”

“We shared so many moments — wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones — and every one of them meant more because Sam was there,” they added. “He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human. A true legend of legends. And his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory. We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”

Below, learn what we know about Rivers’ final days and the legacy he built with Limp Bizkit.

Sam Rivers’ Cause of Death: How Did the Limp Bizkit Bassist Die?

At the time of publication, no official cause of death has been disclosed. However, he struggled with liver issues during his final years due to alcoholism.

Did Sam Rivers Live With Any Health Issues?

Yes, Rivers admittedly struggled with drinking. He took a hiatus from Limp Bizkit in 2015 to deal with his alcoholism and subsequent liver disease, he said in Jon Wiederhorn’s book Raising Hell (Backstage Tales From the Lives of Metal Legends).

“I got liver disease from excessive drinking,” Rivers said, according to the book. “I had to leave Limp Bizkit in 2015 because I felt so horrible, and a few months after tha,  I realized I had to change everything because I had really bad liver disease. I quit drinking and did everything the doctors told me. I got treatment for the alcohol and got a liver transplant, which was a perfect match.”

Did Sam Rivers Quit Limp Bizkit?

Rivers only left Limp Bizkit temporarily in 2015 to focus on his health.

The actress looked chic and sporty in black leggings and a long-sleeved blue crop top. Meanwhile, Joe rocked a white tank top and army-print shorts. The outing came about two months following Joe’s split from actress Sofía Vergara after eight years of marriage.

Official US Trailer for ‘Cactus Pears’ Romantic Indie Drama from India

by Alex Billington

“Any special friend in Mumbai?” “The special friend never lasts.” Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for an indie film titled Cactus Pears, a romantic drama about a lost young man connecting with another man. This first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then it went on to play at other fests including New Directors/New Films, San Francisco, Taipei, and Melbourne. Anand, a 30-something city dweller compelled to spend a 10-day mourning period for his father in the countryside of western India, tenderly bonds with a local farmer who is struggling to stay unmarried. When the mourning ends, forcing his return, Anand must decide the fate of his relationship born under duress. Described as “a poignant approach to unspoken sorrow.” The film stars Bhushaan Manoj as Anand, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap. After giving it a prize, the Sundance Jury stated: “This is the great modern love story. To say it’s an honor to award this tender film is an understatement. We cried, we laughed, and we wished to be loved in the same way. It is exactly what the world needs right now.” Another tender slice of cinema in 2025.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Rohan Kanawade’s film Cactus Pears, direct from YouTube:

Cactus Pears Film Poster

An Indian family consecrates the loss of its patriarch with a 10-day mourning period that strands Anand (Bhushaan Manoj) in the countryside he long ago deserted for Mumbai. Grief’s common phases (poring over old photos, sharing beloved memories) coexist with local rituals, all while Anand’s hidden desires materialize in a rekindled friendship with childhood companion Balya. Through these experiences, sensual discoveries, and Bhushaan Manoj’s ever-measured performance, [this] emerges as an exquisite character piece perfected by its heartrending finale. Cactus Pears is written and directed by the newcomer Indian filmmaker Rohan Kanawade, making his feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously. Produced by Naren Chandavarkar, Neeraj Churi, Mohamed Khaki, Sidharth Meer, Kaushik Ray, Hareesh Reddypalli, Rohan Kanawade. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the World Cinema Grand Jury prize. Strand Releasing will debut Kanawade’s Cactus Pears film in select US theaters starting on November 21st, 2025 this fall. For more info, visit their official site.

Meet His Son and Daughter – Hollywood Life

Ben Stiller has carved out a lasting legacy as one of comedy’s most enduring actors—from his early breakout on The Ben Stiller Show to blockbuster hits like Zoolander and Meet the Parents. At 59, and now behind the scenes as a director and producer, he has remained a beloved figure in Hollywood. Stiller has been married to actress Christine Taylor since 2000, and together they’re navigating parenthood with their two children, daughter Ella and son Quinlin.

At the 25th Anniversary Gala for Project ALS in New York in October 2023, he didn’t just walk the red carpet—he shone the spotlight on his wife. “Christine’s on the board, so she does the real work for a lot of years,” he told Page Six. “I’m a trophy husband. I’m riding her coattails, for sure. She has done so much and she’s been committed for so long.”

As a dad, Ben has often reflected on how his acting career influenced his parenting — especially when his kids were younger. In a 2008 interview with Chicago Parent, he explained, “I think every parent has to sort of be an actor with their kids when they’re doing that. You just sort of have to commit fully, and you don’t care, because you know the audience, and you want them to be happy. Kids love to be told stories, my son especially. So if you can make them laugh, or get them into that mode where they’re into it, then yeah, you use whatever abilities you have. And that’s fun.”

But in his candid new documentary, Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, which premiered at the New York Film Festival and launches on Apple TV+ on October 24, Stiller opened up about the ways he wasn’t a perfect parent. Reflecting on his upbringing and how it shaped his own parenting, he shared at the premiere, “They were very clear with me about what I got wrong.” In one emotional moment, he admitted that cutting Ella from his 2013 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was “probably the worst decision I ever made in my life.”

Find out more about both of Ben and Christine’s kids here.

Ella Olivia Stiller

Ben and Christine welcomed their daughter Ella in April 2002. The Night At The Museum star and his daughter made headlines when she was her dad’s date to the 2022 Emmy Awards. She stunned in a plunging black dress as she attended the award show with her dad. It probably won’t be the last award show she attends with her dad, as she’s decided to follow in her dad’s footsteps and become an actress.

Ella’s Instagram bio reveals that she’s a student at the prestigious Julliard Drama School. She’s also gotten to act in a few projects alongside her dad. She made her movie debut with a small voice acting part in the 2010 animated movie Megamind. She’s also appeared in Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014) and Hubie Halloween (2020), per IMDb. With her parents being actors as well as her grandparents, it’s no surprise that she wants to also work in movies. The Tropic Thunder star said he was happy for his daughter in a 2019 interview on Ellen. “She loves [acting], and she’s very passionate about it, and she knows what she wants to do,” he said. “I just want to kind of support her in it in any way I can.”

Aside from acting, Ben also revealed that he taught Ella to drive, but she taught him about Taylor Swift during their driving lessons, in an August 2022 interview on The Late Show. “What really helped her was if we just played her favorite artist on the iPhone, and we just played Taylor Swift,” he said. “I was a fan, but I think now I’m a total Swiftie.”

Three years after Ella, Ben and Christine had a son Quinlin in July 2005. It’s not clear if Quinlin will take the same path as his sister into the entertainment business, but he has dabbled in a bit of acting, having lent his voice to Madagascar 2 and Megamind, as a kid. More recently, he appeared in the 2021 rom-com Locked Down, per IMDb. Aside from acting, Quinlin has a love for basketball, as Ben revealed in the Ellen interview, mentioned above. It was revealed that his son had a knee injury from playing basketball in a February 2022 profile on Ben in Esquire.

While Quinlin rarely makes public appearances, he did tag-along with his mom and dad at the 25th Project ALS gala in October 2023.
