If there’s one thing I have way too much of in my closet, it’s elevated basics. I can’t resist pieces I can mix and match endlessly and rewear without ever getting sick of them. Another benefit of having a foundation of neutrals I love is that it makes me feel I have more space to bring in playful elements.
Recently, Bettina Looney, a editor in residence, wrote about how “cost per wear” is the girl math she lives by—which I relate to. My Filippa Hagg wool coat and cashmere sweaters are perfect examples. The amount I’ve worn them already makes them feel beyond worth it.
There are a few brands I always check first when I’m in the mood for elevated basics—Geel, Brooke Callahan, Kotn, Paloma Wool, Flore Flore, J.Crew, Cou Cou, Loulou de Saison, and Gap. I’ve also been eyeing the Intimissimi Boat Neck Modal Cashmere Ultralight Top and the Samsoe Samoe Sajeanne Cardigan, both of which feel perfect for colder weather.
Below, a roundup of staples to wear on repeat.
