SNL Sticks to Politics, Addresses Zohran Mamdani’s Mayor Win

A man collapsed in the faux Oval Office during Saturday Night Live‘s cold open, parodying the real-life event that took place this week as President Trump announced his plan to lower the price of weight loss drugs.

“Oh, hi. I didn’t see you there,” James Austin Johnson’s Trump said as his introduction during the episode following a reenactment of the collapse. “Someone was dying in my office.”

“Each week, I like to create a big visual that sort of sums up how things are going. Last week, it was the demolishing of the East Wing. This week, it’s a medical professional almost dying in my Oval Office at the mere thought of charging less for drugs,” he continued. “Maybe next week a bald eagle will fall dead out of the sky and splat right on the White House lawn. And by lawn, of course I mean big outdoor concrete floor.”

Johnson’s Trump recounted a few hot tops topics in the country over the past week, including the government shutdown, grocery prices and the various elections across the nation.

“Hey, all in all, a great caper to an awesome week, except for election. The Democrats won. The lame stream media called the elections a rebuke of Trump’s policies,” he said. “Jokes on them: They’re Stephen Miller’s policies. I don’t read that stuff.”

He, too, addressed Zohran Mamdani being elected the new mayor of New York City, adding, “Can’t believe they elected Mamdani. You know, I’m torn because I like a winner, but I’m not crazy about a Muslim. Maybe he’ll convert, right? We’ll put him in line behind Usha Vance, and I hope I’m pronouncing that wrong.

In what he described as “our side” having “some wins this week,” Johnson’s Trump said, “the Supreme Court said we could stop feeding poor people. You can clap for that, SNAP!”

“And for those of you who can afford food, actually, no you can’t. I promised grocery prices would plummet, and they did — they plummeted straight up,” he continued. “And people are saying, ‘But sir, how will I afford my Thanksgiving turkey for my family?’ Well, good news is your family’s not coming because all the planes are gone.”

Nikki Glaser hosted the sketch comedy series for the first time on Saturday, where she was joined my musical guest Sombr, fresh off his Grammy nomination for best new artist.

During her opening monologue, the comedian joked that she was “in New York City, Epstein’s original island.” Glaser referenced the controversy again later by bringing up Ghislaine Maxwell. She was discussing the prevalence of sex trafficking awareness posters in public restrooms, noting that there is a “really a big fear of being trafficked, mostly for, like, Gen Z girls.”

“I’m getting scared, like, it’s rubbing off on me. I was out with them recently and I was like, ‘What if we get trafficked?’ And they’re like, ‘You’re good,’” Glaser continued. “They’re like, ‘We’re safer when you’re with us, because they think you’re our madam. You have resting Ghislaine face, so just keep that up.’”

Later in the night, former cast member Pete Davidson made a surprise appearance during the “Weekend Update” segment. There, he and Colin Jost addressed recent headlines about the Staten Island Ferry boat they bought together years ago, while subtly touching on a few topical events in his own life.

“So yeah, in case you’re wondering why I had to do a show in Saudi Arabia, we’re losing millions on this ferry,” he joked, referencing him partaking in the Riyadh Comedy Festival earlier this year. “I assume that’s what the article says. I can’t spend $5 on a paywall when I got a kid on the way.”

Glaser served as the second SNL host for the month of November, following Miles Teller’s Nov. 1 appearance. Next week, Glen Powell will make his hosting debut as Bad Bunny, Amy Poehler and Sabrina Carpenter have already previously led season 51 this year.

Bob Dylan’s Publisher Seemingly Responsible for Takedown of Zohran Mamdani’s “Times They Are a-Changin’” Ad

On the eve of his New York mayoral election victory, Zohran Kwame Mamdani posted an ad on social media soundtracked by Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are a-Changin’.” The video, like much of Mamdani’s campaign, went viral, as its “New York is a-changin’” slogan rapidly spread across social media. By the following morning, however, it had been removed from X with a takedown notice: “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright holder.” Unsurprisingly, this was not a snub by Dylan himself but an apparent decision by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), The New York Times reports. In a statement, UMPG, which acquired Dylan’s songwriting catalog in 2020, said, “As a longstanding policy, we do not license Bob Dylan compositions for projects involving political figures.”

The publishing company has previously denied a request by the Mamdani campaign to license the song, The Times reports, citing two anonymous sources briefed on the matter. UMPG did not explicitly say it had ordered the ad’s removal; copyright violations are sometimes detected electronically, prompting automatic takedowns. As of Thursday morning (November 6), the video is still available on Instagram and TikTok.

Zohran Mamdani appears at PinkPantheress show in Brooklyn ahead of New York mayoral election

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani appeared during PinkPantheress’ Brooklyn show just days before the mayoral election.

The left-wing candidate will be on the ballot on November 4 to be the new Mayor of New York City, in the contest to replace the outgoing Democrat Eric Adams, and just 10 days before the election, he popped up at the PinkPantheress concert to urge people to get out their vote.

On Friday night (October 24), the singer and musician kicked off her ‘An Evening With PinkPantheress’ North American tour with a show at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, and during a performance of ‘True Romance’ from her 2023 debut album ‘Heaven Knows’, the video backdrop behind her had a surprise for fans.

A pair of hands appeared on the screen, with “Our Time Has Come” and “Vote Nov. 4” written on the two palms. As the camera pulled back, it revealed Mamdani, who was greeted with loud cheers from the crowd.

Mamdani also popped up during Lucy Dacus’ show at All Things Go in New York last month. “This is what our city should feel like,” he told the crowd. “It should be a city where trans New Yorkers are cherished, a city where our queer neighbours are celebrated, and a city where each and every New Yorker can be the fullest version of themselves. And it has to be a city that all of us can afford.”

As for PinkPantheress, her latest studio album was ‘Fancy That’, which was released in May and later nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize. The album scored a four-star review from NME, with Kyann-Sian Williams writing: “With ‘Fancy That’, PinkPantheress is kicking down the door to her next chapter – one that promises to be more adventurous than ever. She’s no longer content with being the elusive girl behind the screen, proving she can shapeshift, push boundaries and still keep us hooked – all in under 20 minutes.”

The star-studded remix album ‘Fancy Some More?’ arrived this month, featuring the likes of SEVENTEEN, JADE, Kylie Minogue, Sugababes and Zara Larsson. NME awarded that one three stars, noting: “’Fancy Some More?’ is ambitious and kaleidoscopic, packed with heavyweight collaborators and wildly inventive reinterpretations, but it rarely recaptures the tight, unruly charm of ‘Fancy That’.”

Last month, NME attended PinkPantheress’ show at the O2 Academy Brixton and rated the gig four stars: “By the end, when the cast bowed and hugged onstage, the night felt less like a polished pop spectacle and more like a madcap show-and-tell with a superstar host. It may not have reinvented the live experience, but it proved PinkPantheress’ real gift: she knows how to turn a massive venue into something intimate, funny and unhinged.”

Zohran Mamdani Makes a Surprise Appearance

In 10 days, voters will head to the polls on Election Day for a bevy of elections around the country, including key gubernatorial and mayoral races. In New York City, Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has been busy hitting the campaign trail. Along the way, he’s made a few surprise musical stops, including his cameo at PinkPantheress‘ show on Friday at Brooklyn’s King Theatre.

At her first stop on her residency-style An Evening With PinkPantheress tour, the singer was in the midst of performing “True Romance” from her 2023 debut album, Heaven Knows, when she dropped a surprise. As she was singing, the video backdrop behind her flashed on a pair of splayed hands. Written in marker on one hand’s palm were the words, “Our Time Has Come,” and on the other: “Vote Nov 4.” As the camera panned out in the black-and-white video footage, it revealed a smiling Mamdani, whose surprise appearance drew loud cheers from the audience.

Meanwhile, PinkPantheress didn’t miss a beat, continuing to perform as she ascended the tiered platforms onstage to grab a marker and write something on the palm of her hand.  As she descended to the foot of the stage, she shared her own handwritten message for Mamdani, to which fans also responded positively: “We ♡ U!” PinkPantheress wrote.

Last month, Mamdani also made a surprise appearance at All Things Go 2025 during its New York edition at Forest Hills Stadium, joining Lucy Dacus onstage before she performed. In a campaign video back in July, he met up with Wu-Tang Clan at their purported final Madison Square Garden show. In the clip, he meets backstage with rap luminaries including Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Killer Mike, El-P, and Jadakiss to discuss his platform. “There are too many people for whom stability, space, raising a family, you can only do it outside of New York City,” he tells RZA in the video. “The whole campaign that we ran on is about ‘How do we make the most expensive city in the United States of America affordable?’”

On Nov. 4, Mamdani, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa will appear on the New York ballot for the New York mayoral race to replace incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who suspended his reelection campaign in late September.
