Back in August, Charli seemingly closed the door on her ‘Brat’ era while also teasing her appearance in the upcoming new A24 film.

Now, a new teaser of the film has been shared which was posted alongside the caption, ‘based on an original idea by Charli XCX’. The music for the project has been made by Charli’s long term producer, A.G. Cook.

Written by Zamiri and Bertie Brandes, Charli star in the film, which, as per the official synopsis, will follow “a rising pop star navigates the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut.”

The teaser also revealed more of the cast list, which includes Kylie Jenner and Rachel Sennett as well as Rish Shah, who appeared in Ms. Marvel, Isaac Cole Powell, who starred in Armando Iannucci’s HBO series The Franchise, Kate Berlant, who starred alongside Nicolas Cage in 2023 movie Dream Scenario and Stath Lets Flats’ Jamie Demetriou.

Previously-announced cast members include Alexander Skarsgård (Succession), Rosanna Arquette and Trew Mullen (Blink Twice).

In the comments of the teaser’s post on Instagram, director and co-writer of the project Aidan Zamiri, also hinted that the film would follow an unusual structure, writing: “Just checking – a movie is just like a really long video right? or is more like a blog post with pictures?”

You can watch the teaser, which features a re-mix of Icona Pop’s ‘I Don’t Care’, which Charli featured on in 2012, below:

In other news, Charli XCX recently shared studio footage, as her collaborator revealed she’s working on a “really different and fresh” new album.

Following its release last year, ‘Brat’ quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon, with the concept of ‘Brat’ summer even working its way into Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

Last week (October 5), Charli took to X to share a five-second clip from the studio. The audio features some horror soundtrack-esque strings building to a sharp crescendo before coming to a sudden halt.

It’s not clear if this is for the album, but the clip does come after Finn Keane, a producer who worked on ‘Brat’, gave an update on the record’s progress last Monday (September 29). Speaking to Music News at the BMI London Awards, he said: “We’re kinda deep in it now, and I think it’s gonna be really amazing… It feels really different and fresh at the moment.”

Back in May, Charli hinted that she’s expecting her next album to go in a completely different direction, which could result in a “flop”, saying: “You can never really do the same thing twice and my next record will probably be a flop which I’m down for to be honest.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve been told about what her next album could look like. In February, her producers A.G. Cook, Finn Keane and George Daniel – who is also Charli’s husband – teased that the follow-up is shaping up to be “anti-Brat”: “Some of the conversations we’re having and music we’ve been playing around with the last couple of months have been completely the opposite.”

‘Brat’ was named as the Album of the Year by NME, and awarded a four-star review that read: “It all paints a picture of who XCX is in 2024. Growing pains, grief and aching doubts come alongside self-confidence, celebration and the knowledge of the place XCX holds in the musical landscape – indeed, she kicks off ‘360’ with the knowing: “I went my own way and I made it / I’m your favourite reference baby”.

The subsequent remix album, ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat‘, received five stars from NME, with Aneesa Ahmed writing: “In some ways, ‘Brat And It’s Completely Different But Also Still Brat’ is a home run for its creator, letting her finish the game on her own terms.

“She has perfected the art of remixing, keeping the songs moving by giving them a brand new lease of life rather than letting them exist statically in their original form.”

Charli has provided the soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights and, outside of music, has taken on various acting projects lately. She’s starring in 100 Nights Of Hero, adapted from a graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg, the adventure-comedy Sacrifice alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans, Pete Ohs’ Erupcja, and the upcoming erotic thriller I Want Your Sex alongside Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman.

In other news, a new Taylor Swift track, ‘Actually Romantic’, is widely rumoured to be a diss track directed at Charli.

Singer takes on Brat standout before releasing Fancy Some More? remix album this Friday

PinkPantheress served up a cover of Charli XCX’s “Apple” during the singer’s appearance on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge .

Ahead of the release of her Fancy Some More? remix album, PinkPantheress delivered a rendition of the Brat favorite that upped the Nineties dance vibes. During the two-minute performance, PinkPantheress also attempted the viral “Apple Dance” while holding the microphone in one hand.

Fancy Some More? arrives this Friday with a stacked guest list that includes Kylie Minogue, Bladee, Seventeen, Nia Archives, Sugababes, JT, Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Rachel Chinouriri, Kaytranada, Jade, Anitta, and many more. The release serves as a companion album to PinkPantheress’ 2025 mixtape Fancy That, which was named one of Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 2025 So Far.

The mixtape features the hit single “Tonight” that she also performed during her Live Lounge visit.

Trending Stories

The Live Lounge performance and PinkPantheress’ recent Tiny Desk concert have served as a preview of the singer’s upcoming An Evening With PinkPantheress tour that kicks off later this month in Brooklyn.

That tour marks a return to the road for PinkPantheress, who previously canceled all of her scheduled 2024 appearances last year. “I was full up. There was something that I needed to address, and so I had to leave,” the musician told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 earlier this year. “And I did that for my own good. And obviously it was a very sad moment for people that wanted to see me but couldn’t see me. But obviously, what goes around comes around, and I’ll be back again.”

bitchy | Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Actually Romantic’ about Charli XCX’s ‘Sympathy Is a Knife’?

Just like The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl leaked online a few days before the album’s official release. People quickly became focused on one particular song, “Actually Romantic.” The first lines of the song: “I heard you call me “Boring Barbie”/when the coke’s got you brave/High-fived my ex and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me/Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face/Some people might be offended/But it’s actually sweet/All the time you’ve spent on me/It’s honestly wild/All the effort you’ve put in/It’s actually romantic.”

The backstory: Taylor used to date Matt Healy, the lead singer of The 1975. Charli XCX dated and is now married to George Daniel, drummer of The 1975. Charli and Taylor were around each other briefly because of that. Charli referenced that in the song “Sympathy Is a Knife” on her album Brat, which came out last year. The lyrics to “SIAK” include: “I don’t wanna share this space/I don’t wanna force a smile/This one girl taps my insecurities/Don’t know if it’s real or if I’m spiraling” and “’Cause I couldn’t even be her if I tried/I’m opposite, I’m on the other side.”

Charli’s song is about her own insecurities, and comparing herself unfavorably to Taylor. Charli’s message last year was very clear, and she even spelled it out in interviews and social media, that most of Brat was about not feeling good enough, comparing herself to other pop stars, and feeling societal pressure to both compete with other pop girls and be besties with other pop girls. And Taylor took that as a diss track and called Charli a cokehead. Is it possible that Taylor just… didn’t understand “SIAK”? Possibly. Is it also possible that Charli and Taylor had beef beyond “SIAK,” beef about Matt Healy? Probably. Charli is close to Healy’s fiancee, and I could absolutely see how Taylor is in her feelings about the Matt Healy of it all.

Incidentally, last year, Lorde understood the assignment. Lorde heard Charli’s “girl, so confusing” and she didn’t take it as a diss track or anything. Lorde immediately hopped on the remix, and it turned into the best song to come out of the Brat Era, with both Charli and Lorde owning their own insecurities and Lorde telling Charli that of course she still rides for her.

Updated to add Taylor’s new explanation for “Actually Romantic,” which is bonkers. Taylor really operates as if every single personshe encounters is obsessed with her.

Lmao the way she explains the track😭 pic.twitter.com/5d9NjDLwpN

Charli XCX’s ‘Erupcja’ role almost went to Clairo

Charli XCX has revealed that Clairo was also considered for her role in her upcoming independent film Erupcja.

In October, news emerged that the ‘360’ singer had filmed the movie in secret in Warsaw during the height of ‘Brat’ summer.

Director Pete Ohs confirmed that Erupcja, which means “eruption” in Polish, will tell the story of the combustible relationship between two women – a local Polish citizen played by Lena Góra and a tourist, to be played by Charli XCX.

In a new interview with Filmmaker Magazine, Charli and Ohs have spoken about their chance meeting in New York bar Clandestino in May 2024 where they were introduced by a mutual friend Said Harris.

Speaking about the improvised nature of the film’s production, Ohs spoke about developing Charli’s character Bethany. “Okay, we have a character named Bethany who’s shy and what is she doing in Warsaw?” he said. “That’s the fun of making movies this way, where it just all becomes about asking questions, finding what answers feel good, and just like moving through the story and discovering it as we go.”

Charli responded: “I remember quite early on, we were talking a lot about the singer Clairo in comparison with Bethany. You were like, ‘I really like Clairo.’ So we kept brining Clairo into the mix when we were thinking about who Bethany was, which is funny, because as a musician, she’s sort of like the complete opposite to who I am as a musician.”

While it appears that Clairo was in consideration during the development process, Ohs soon decided that XCX would play Bethany and they were filming three months later.

Although they tried to keep it low-key, the film’s “secrecy” was blown by the musician’s fame. “[Charli] definitely got recognized a bunch of times, Ohs said last year. “She was always really sweet. She took selfies with many a Polish fan…”

Erupcja will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday (September 4). No general release has been announced.

Charli is also starring in 100 Nights Of Hero, adapted from a graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg. That film is having its world premiere at Venice International Film Festival on Saturday (September 6), followed by a US release on December 5. A UK release date has not been announced. She is also set to star in the adventure-comedy Sacrifice alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans.

Charli has also proven herself to be an avid film fan too, making regular recommendations via TikTok, leaving reviews on Letterboxd, and pitching an It Girl edition of the Final Destination franchise. She also recently shared a scene from her upcoming mockumentary film, The Moment.
