Rupert Wyatt’s Long-Gestating Middle Eastern Western

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

It is a tale nearly as old as time — but enough about the creative differences that have conspired to keep this ambitious Middle Eastern Western away from movie screens since it went into production four years ago. Looking at it now, and knowing what we know about the shooting conditions, it’s a miracle Desert Warrior exists at all, never mind some of the extraordinary images captured by director Rupert Wyatt and his cinematographer Guillermo Garza. In fact, it’s not immediately clear that it was ever a troubled production at all, but what starts with a very lean and entertaining B-movie gradually becomes something of a slog; after setting up a very simple, almost Sergio Leone-esque scenario — a bandit (Antony Mackie) and a bounty hunter (Sharlto Copley) — Wyatt’s film somehow becomes a stodgy, sprawling, feminist, pre-Islamic Ghandi.

One can only speculate, but it does feel that this two-hour cut is something of a compromise, and, if it is, it’s one that perfectly expresses what happens when too many people bring their concept of an action movie to the table. There are times when you can see unexpected flashes of inspiration, and there are echoes of John Ford’s Monument Valley in the location work. There’s even a little Kurosawa — from all the stages of his career — in the feudal set-up; while the decadent emperor Kisra (Ben Kingsley) holds court, his enemies are banished. This would seem to be the film Wyatt set out to make, and it would have been a good ’un.

And, for a time, it works. Mackie’s bandit is this film’s The Man With No Name, and we find him out in the desert with his camel when the story starts and a mysterious old man enters the frame. “Tell me who you are,” says the bandit. “In time,” says the stranger, who promises gold and a jewel-encrusted dagger in exchange for help. It turns out that he is the former King Numan (Ghassan Massoud), who has been deposed by Emperor Kisra and has escaped with his daughter, the Princess Hind (Aiysha Hart). If they return, Numan will be killed and Hind will be forced to become Kisra’s concubine, which is why the emperor sends the cruel mercenary Jalabzeen (Copley) to bring them back.

The bandit takes the pair into Shaybani territory, where he is treated with suspicion, to the extent that he is considered a traitor and condemned to die. Hind helps him escape, and this might be the exact point that the tension starts to dissipate. For one thing, Hind finds that Numan is gone in the morning, having returned to the city of his own volition. Needless to say, that doesn’t end well. Nevertheless, Hind decides that she must follow in his footsteps, enlisting the bandit as a traveling companion. “You will ride faster alone,” he tells her. “We will ride further together,” she says. (Yes, it’s that kind of script.)

So, here we are, and on her way back, Hind somehow becomes possessed of the kind of mystical messianic qualities that aren’t much seen outside of a Dune movie as her quest gathers support, galvanizing the put-upon castes of the region to come together while a traveling map of the country fills the screen. (Yes, it’s that kind of movie.) Before you know it, Desert Warrior has become a war movie, and quite a spectacular one at that, with elephants and wolves (awful CGI ones, mind) that seem to spring more from an all-hands meeting about what a film with a $150m budget could be missing than what it might actually need.

But to make the film Desert Warrior turns into at this point you need serious star power, and while the Arabic cast is especially strong, the leads needs need that extra bit of wattage that the film just doesn’t have. Even the usually reliable Kingsley can’t bring much more to the party, clearly just dropping in for a few days’ work to have a comfy, ’tache-twirlingly evil sit-down in the film’s much less interesting studio-set scenes. To make things worse, the film’s two most engaging characters — the bandit and Jalabzeen — become so consistently sidelined that it’s hard to get too excited when the inevitable showdown happens, simply because we haven’t spent enough time with either of them to care.

Anyway, it all sorts itself out, and the film sends you home with the helpful message that “there are many ways to fight a battle”. There are also many ways to sing a desert song, and it is in the film’s favor that, but for perhaps one single heat-hazy shot, it doesn’t even attempt to compare itself to Lawrence of Arabia. Tellingly, though, David Lean’s film still cost less than Desert Warrior in today’s money, and perhaps the lesson learned here is that the difference between a true cinematic masterpiece and a decent Sky TV pilot directed by Ridley Scott isn’t necessarily determined by the amount of cash you throw at it.

Keke Wyatt’s Son Says She Exploited His Cancer And Dubbed It “Karma”

Keke Wyatt’s 23-year-old son, Rahjah Ke’ Morton, is speaking out against his mother, accusing the R&B diva of exploiting his past cancer diagnosis for “personal gain” and “attention.”

Rahjah, who openly identifies as part of the LGBTQ community — or as he described it, the “Alphabet mafia” — claimed that while Wyatt has presented herself as supportive in the past, her behavior behind closed doors has been far from that.

Joining in on the “put a finger down” TikTok challenge, Rahjah posted a video to his Instagram on Friday (Sep 5) where he presented the personal prompt: “Put a finger down if you were diagnosed with cancer as a teenager and your parent decided to publicly announce your diagnosis for personal gain and attention, but behind the scenes saying that your diagnosis is karma for you being apart of the Alphabet mafia — and if they known that you were gonna turn out like this they could’ve kept their money.”

He then had only four fingers remaining with his thumb turned down. See below.

Social media had much to say, with one person commenting on X, “This is DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!! I’m GAGGGEEDDD!!! Not keke not liking the gays Chile ! I’m sorry her son had to go thru that. Smh!!!!!!” Another person remarked, “This is really crazy. I’m sorry to hear this RahJah. I’m gagging I didn’t know this was your mother.”

Keke Wyatt has yet to respond to Rahjah’s claims.

Back in 2017, Wyatt revealed her son’s cancer prognosis in an emotional Instagram video, asking fans for prayers as she prepared to shave her head in solidarity.

“Haven’t really said too much about my personal life, but my child has been fighting cancer and lost all of their hair that they loved. It hurts me so bad,” she wrote at the time. “I need a complete healing for my baby.” Her mother, brother, and aunt shaved their heads as well.

A year later, the R&B Divas: Atlanta star shared that Rahjah had officially beaten cancer. “NO MORE CANCER,” she captioned a celebratory YouTube video, where she and Rahjah opened up about his diagnosis and treatment journey.

Wyatt recalled noticing the first signs of her son’s illness during a trip to an amusement park, when she saw him struggling to walk. Soon after, he began losing weight at a concerning rate. “Because I was dying! I was literally dying, and we didn’t know,” Rahjah chimed in and recalled.

Following bloodwork, the “Nothing In This World” singer recalled receiving the devastating phone call from his doctor confirming her worst fear. “I said, ‘What is it? Like, cancer or something?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ Honey, my butthole fell on the floor. My throat hit my butt and my butt hit the floor. I couldn’t believe it,” she said. When doctors confirmed it was leukemia, the singer admitted her teeth began chattering in shock.

Wyatt also remembered the terrifying seizures Rahjah suffered while in the hospital. “Whenever something happens with you, the whole hospital pops up at your door,” she told her son. “Everybody had something to do on you. That was the scariest crap I had ever been through in my life. If there was ever a time in my life where I would lose my mind, that would be the day.”

Take a look at Rahjah’s video about his mother allegedly exploiting his cancer diagnosis for clout above.

Keke Wyatt’s Son Accuses Her Of Using His Cancer Battle For Attention

Rahjah Ke’ Morton jumped on TikTok’s ‘Put A Finger Down’ trend on Friday, September 5, seemingly airing out his mom, Keke Wyatt, for using his cancer battle for her own gain. In the video, Rahjah stands outside in what looks like a backyard and says his mom announced his diagnosis publicly for attention, but she doesn’t support him behind the scenes. Rahjah, who identifies as a part of the LGBTQ community, said his mom allegedly blamed his cancer diagnosis on his sexuality. From there, he said if she knew he was going to be apart of the “Alphabet Mafia”, she wouldn’t have helped him and would’ve kept her money. So far, Keke hasn’t responded, but folks online are definitely weighing in on Rahjah’s claims.

Social Media Weighs In On Rahjah’s Accusations Against His Mom

Meanwhile, folks in The Shade Room’s comment section were split over Rahjah’s comments about his mom. Some argued he shouldn’t have brought his feelings to the internet, while others questioned Keke’s parenting.

Instagram user @iamshanellll wrote, “Let’s normalize NOT coming to the internet to discuss family business with complete strangers who don’t care.”

Instagram user @jpowell06 wrote, “Her attention seems to be on having a man and having babies…..not actually caring and supporting them.”

While Instagram user @tracigross wrote, “This is his experience and no one should judge him.”

Then Instagram user @j.og wrote, “Publicly Bashing Your Parents on the Internet for what??? You said it already on tv.”

Another Instagram user @flavapfever wrote, “Mind you she out here singing for pride events 😂😂”

Instagram user @imitationbyjerell wrote, “Some people like being pregnant and having kids but not being a parent…….”

While another Instagram user @k.kardashian__ wrote, “Idk I don’t see Keke saying that..”

Instagram user @iam_londonnykole wrote, “Unfortunately, we all knew she was a loose cannon so I can believe this unfortunately!”

Finally, Instagram user @cal_the_artist wrote, “Put a finger up if your tired of family’s airing out dirty laundry via the internet take that 💩 to therapy.”

Here’s What Keke Previously Said About Rahjah’s Prognosis

Although Keke hasn’t responded to Rahjah’s current claims, she talked about his cancer prognosis back in 2017. The singer shared her thoughts in an emotional Instagram video, asking fans to pray for him during the tough time. She also wrote in her caption that she planned to have shave her head bald to support Rahjah through his hair loss.

Plz pray for my family… Haven’t really said to much about my personal life, But my child has been fighting cancer and lost all of their hair that they loved. It hurts me so bad. So to show Mommy’s support I’m going to get @keever_west to shave me bald today 😢😢😢I need a complete healing for my baby,” Keke captioned her post.

A year later Keke had revealed in a YouTube video that Rahjah was officially cancer free. The footage sees Keke and Rahjah in a doctors office discussing his diagnosis and recalling some of the trials they experienced.

Kimberly Wyatt’s marriage secrets

Kimberly Wyatt says the secret to a successful marriage is to “marry your best friend”.

Kimberly Wyatt’s marriage secrets

The 43-year-old singer has children Willow, 10, Maple, eight, and five-year-old Ford with her husband, model Max Rogers, 43, and Kimberly credits their strong friendship with making their marriage work.

She told The Mirror: “I guess, ultimately, you have to marry your best friend. Because you know, a relationship is work, and you have to be willing to go through the tough times as well as the good times, and work together to create the good times. Ultimately, we both want the same future and to create that loving family bond. I guess building a life that you both love and enjoy sharing brings longevity in your partnership.”

Kimberly also revealed she is still keen for a Pussycat Dolls reunion, after their previous tour was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said: “As many people know, we were set for a world tour before Covid, before everything crashed down. You never know what’s next. I think we’re in a time where women supporting women is what I’d like the brand to stand for, so I’ll sit and wait until the day that happens.

“I look back fondly on the fact we sold so many records. We empowered so many people to be and feel accepted and find pride in owning their space and being okay with who they are. What we did was just phenomenal, touring the world, and bringing that sense of confidence to fans everywhere. Each Doll represented something different, and to see what we were able to do in so many people’s lives is just epic.

“It was more than 10 years before we had a recording contract. It was the likes of Carmen Electra, Scarlett Johansson, Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera – all these incredible stars who came and performed as a Pussycat Doll that gave us enough clout in LA to finally get our record deal and become the band we were.”
