‘Boondocks’ Creator Aaron McGruder Joins ‘Last Friday’ Writers Room

In an exciting turn for fans of the Friday film franchise, legendary cartoonist and writer Aaron McGruder has joined the writers’ room for the long-rumored final installment of the series, tentatively titled Last Friday.

Actor and comedian Mike Epps, who has featured in the franchise’s previous entries, revealed the news during his recent interview with Big Boy.

“I just was with Ice Cube, DJ Pooh, and Aaron McGruder, sitting in the room writing this movie,” Epps said of the addition of McGruder, creator of the cult-savvy comic strip and subsequent animated series The Boondocks. “We’re writing it right now, and it’s gonna be crazy.”

Epps further noted that the occasion was the first time that all of the writers of the film were in a room together to trade ideas about the script. “This is the first time we all got together,” the Indiana native said while providing the latest update regarding Last Friday.

McGruder’s arrival is significant: his groundbreaking work began with The Boondocks comic strip—debuting in the student newspaper of the University of Maryland and later syndicated nationwide—then evolved into a sharp, socially conscious animated series for Adult Swim.

Known for its biting commentary on race, politics, and culture, The Boondocks earned a dedicated and critically appreciative fan base. McGruder’s unique voice and fearless satire have long earned him a reputation for mixing humour with provocative reflection.

At the same time, the Friday series’ lead—Ice Cube—has been waging a protracted battle in the background.

Although the original film premiered in 1995 and spawned sequels Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002), Cube has repeatedly lamented that he cannot bring the new movie to fruition because the studio currently holding the rights, Warner Bros. (via New Line Cinema), continues to stall.

“I don’t know. Warner Bros is weird right now… They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back,” Cube said in a 2022 podcast appearance, adding bluntly: “I ain’t putting sh*t up for it. F**k no. They need to give it to me.”

He also revealed that two scripts for Last Friday had been submitted and rejected, further fueling speculation that the project was mired in development limbo. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the film is moving forward under the production of Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

With Aaron McGruder now at the table alongside Cube, DJ Pooh and Mike Epps, the new draft for the film appears to be gaining fresh momentum. Epps also took a moment to honour Cube’s legacy.
“Shouts out to Ice Cube, the Don Mega,” the comic said while saluting his longtime co-star.

“I always give Ice Cube his props, man, because not only did he walk me in the business, but he walked a lot of young brothers and sisters in the business.”

In short: a landmark cultural creator is stepping into a landmark franchise at a crucial juncture — and if this latest writers’ room has its way, fans of both The Boondocks and Friday might finally get the chapter they’ve awaited.

Alan Partridge writers on “awful” Katherine Kelly role in How Are You?

For Alan, life is something of a mixed bag at the moment, having lost his cushty BBC presenting gig (see This Time), but finding companionship with new girlfriend Katrina (Kelly).

Speaking at the press launch of the series, How Are You? co-writer Neil Gibbons explained that the team has moved on from the era of Alan as a “kicked puppy”, as seen in the travel tavern days of I’m Alan Partridge.

But they’ve found a “new flavour” of torment for the character from Katrina.

“On the face of it, he sort of has everything. He’s got quite a good house, he’s got quite a good car. He’s getting a lot of low-level, but quite lucrative work,” continued Neil, who co-writes with brother Rob Gibbons and Coogan himself.

Steve Coogan plays Alan Partridge in How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) BBC / Baby Cow / Ollie Upton

“And he’s got a girlfriend who’s younger than him, who’s beautiful, who’s quite a figure in the community. But [she’s] just an awful, awful woman. And as the series goes on, you do see Alan struggling with what – on paper – is clearly a good deal for him souring quite badly.”

Coogan added that they were looking to create a female character who would be able to easily deflect Alan’s misogynistic tendencies and challenge him in ways neither Lynn (Felicity Montagu) nor ex-girlfriend Sonja (Amelia Bullmore) ever could.

“Alan bullies Lynn quite a bit, although Lynn does actually get the better of Alan sometimes,” explained Coogan. “But we wanted someone who would have Alan on the back foot in a way he’s not with Lynn.

“We wanted someone who ‘wore the trousers’ and who he was obviously attracted to, but she was mercurial to him [and] he couldn’t quite understand who she was.”

Coogan went on to praise his modern Partridge collaborators, Neil and Rob Gibbons, for their work transforming Alan from a fairly broad comedy character to a more “three-dimensional” figure.

“Rob and Neil are really, totally comfortable with poignancy or pathos,” he concluded.

“Alan evolved under their stewardship to be more three-dimensional. So sometimes you can actually feel sorry for Alan, feel compassion for him and that is a much more humane execution of the character. That’s given it longevity.”

How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 3rd October 2025.

Jimmy Kimmel Writers React to ABC Show Return After Charlie Kirk Joke

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

After ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week following the host’s remarks about the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, even those who have been part of Kimmel’s inner circle were unsure that the show would ever return.

“I’m truly shocked,” Ned Rice, a former writer for the late night program, tells The Hollywood Reporter about its planned return to the air Tuesday. “I would have bet a lot of money that this was over. After saying you’re suspended, I didn’t think everybody could make nice and [decide,] ‘Let’s try again.’”

Kimmel, a frequent target of President Donald Trump‘s ire for his quips lambasting the administration, commented during his Sept. 15 episode that MAGA Republicans were focused on distancing themselves from Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. After FCC chairman Brendan Carr fanned the flames of dissension during an appearance on Benny Johnson’s podcast — leading TV affiliate conglomerates Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group to threaten to pull the show in their markets — ABC announced Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be suspended indefinitely.

The show’s Tuesday return was presaged by a firestorm of pushback, ranging from protests at the Disney studio lot to viral social media posts from Hollywood figures encouraging others to cancel their subscriptions to such Disney-backed streaming services as Disney+ and Hulu. Even former Disney CEO Michael Eisner voiced concern over the suspension.

Among those protesting at Disney was Joe Strazzullo, a Kimmel writer for six years before his exit in 2021. “As a WGA member, I know the importance of solidarity,” Strazzullo tells THR about why he was compelled to make his voice heard. “We’re used to fighting back against bullies. Bullies are the reason many of us became comedy writers. I’m thrilled my friends at Jimmy Kimmel Live! are headed back to work.”

Although Kimmel’s supporters have heralded the return as a victory for freedom of expression, the fact remains that broadcast late night programs are perceived as increasingly less financially viable amid dwindling ratings. Over the summer, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert was the first of the current core group of late night shows to get canceled, which spurred speculation about the axing being politically motivated ahead of the recently completed merger between Paramount and Skydance Media.

Rice has plenty of experience with the late night landscape, having written for numerous titles, including Bill Maher’s Real Time and Politically Incorrect, Jay Leno’s Tonight Show and Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show. “People just don’t watch those shows anymore,” admits Rice, who last wrote for Kimmel in 2009. “So I thought this was a convenient way of ABC unloading Jimmy. It killed two birds, you might say. [Tuesday’s] show is going to be pretty hot. That will be a real television moment, for sure.”

Of course, not everyone who might want to watch Kimmel’s return will get a chance to see it, as Nexstar and Sinclair will not air the show, making it dark on roughly a quarter of ABC stations. Assesses one former Kimmel writer, who asked to remain anonymous: “The Tonight Show premiered 71 years ago. [Since then,] late night has told jokes about 13 presidents, and only one has tried to take down all of late night.” The scribe adds about Sinclair’s politically conservative leanings, “People can just google Sinclair and see what they’re about.”

As for Kimmel’s future, his ABC contract expires in May, and he has previously hinted at looming retirement. For now, Rice expects the host to deliver the same barbs that he always has — “It would be crazy to try to change now” — but still worries about a cultural landscape losing its ability to poke at those with power.

“Americans love topical humor,” he says about late night TV. “We love to hear jokes about the president, about celebrities and so on. Something will have to replace it.”

“Be the first one to find God, and you can rewrite your fate.” CMC Pictures in China has revealed the main official trailer for a big action fantasy sequel called A Writer’s Odyssey 2, the follow-up to the hit movie A Writer’s Odyssey from 2021. “Reality is being overwritten by fiction…” Can he stop it? The writer is back again for another epic story. “Before you step into the theater, make sure you’re not his next character. The story isn’t finished yet… but the NPCs are already off-script! Plot is spiraling out of control—return to reality while you still can.” Struggling novelist Lu Kongwen gives in to a powerful temptation, plunging himself and his fictional characters into an inescapable crisis. Through rediscovering his purpose, he joins forces with his creations to heroically resolve the dual-world catastrophe. The movie stars Deng Chao, Dong Zijian, Lei Jiayin, Wang Shengdi, and Ding Chengxin. Just like the first movie, this looks like a crazy action-packed, CGI-filled adventure with tons of creatures and characters and fights and everything else. Have fun.

Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Yang Lu’s action sequel A Writer’s Odyssey 2, from YouTube:

In the novel’s world, the protagonist Kongwen embarks on a journey of resistance to defy his predetermined fate. In the end, the novelist confronts his own dark side, regains his faith, and joins forces with his characters to save both worlds from impending doom. A Writer’s Odyssey 2, also known as 刺杀小说家2 or Ci Sha Xiao shuo jia 2, is once again directed by Chinese filmmaker Yang Lu, director of the films My Spectacular Theatre, Brotherhood of Blades 1 & 2, The Sacrifice, and the first A Writer’s Odyssey, plus the series “The Wind Blows from Longxi” & “The Mutations”. The screenplay is by Zelin Li. Exec produced by Hongwei Wang. The film opens first in China starting in early October this year. CMC Pictures will also release A Writer’s Odyssey in select US theaters starting on October 3rd, 2025 coming up. Who’s down?
