Bess Wohl and Whitney White on the Radical Relevance of ‘Liberation’

A look into America’s political past, Liberation is also a personal story, inspired by Wohl’s own mother, who worked at Ms. magazine during the playwright’s youth. But the Tony-nominated playwright, who made her Broadway debut in 2020 with the comedy Grand Horizons, did not imagine her latest work would be quite so relevant today.

When Liberation opened off-Broadway in February 2025, directed by Tony nominee Whitney White, reviews were rapturous. The women’s fight against the patriarchy resonated with audiences reeling from the rollback of reproductive rights, and whose algorithms were flooded with tradwife content.

“I knew what we had, but you never know,” White says of the play’s reception. “Someone can have a message, but you have to deliver the right message at the right time. And I was like, ‘Is this the right time? Are people ready to hear this? And will they enter the story the way we’re entering the story?’ And as it turns out, it was.”

Audiences related to the story in many respects—to the anger at inequality in the workplace, the fear of losing bodily rights, the frustration with the sluggish pace of progress, and the exhaustion from the ongoing fight. In one scene, a character declares, “I am so hopeful, but I am burned the fuck out,” a line Wohl pulled from one of her interviews.

“She said, ‘By the 1970s I was burnt out on women’s liberation,’ and I thought, wow, the arc of history is so much longer than we realize,” Wohl says. “Already in 1970 women were feeling frustrated, like, ‘When is this gonna happen?’ And I think that that urgency really powers so much of the story of the play.” Present-day activists can relate: While the first Women’s March, held after Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, counted more than half a million attendees in Washington D.C.—the largest single-day protest in US history—the 2025 People’s March, after his second victory, peaked at approximately 50,000 people.

As the Season 34 finale approaches, Dancing with the Stars fans rooting for Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas were met with some unfortunate news

One day after announcing they would give away tickets to the live show, the pair shared an update that ABC and BBC have pulled the plug on their giveaway, but they are working on another opportunity.

“So, we have some bad news,” said Leavitt in a TikTok video. “We just got out of rehearsal, and we were both informed that we actually can’t do a giveaway for the Dancing with the Stars live show.”

Ballas noted that the decision “has come directly from ABC and BBC, and is completely out of our hands.”

Leavitt added, “It just really sucks because Mark and I just want to do something really special for you guys that have shown us so much support and love, for us and the show. We’re gonna get creative and we’re gonna think of something else to give away.”

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star and her dancing partner have impressed during their Season 34 run, most recently stomping out the competition with a combined score of 72 for Weeks 5 and 6.

Airing Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC, the Dancing with the Stars live show scheduled for Nov. 25.

Whitney Cummings Shrugs Off Saudi Comedy Fest Criticism as “Just Racism”

Whitney Cummings has heard the criticisms for performing at the controversial Riyadh Comedy Festival, which the comedian has dismissed as “just racism.”

Cummings spoke up on her Good for You podcast, where she responded to the ongoing disapproval being leveled at comedians like herself who traveled to Saudi Arabia for the fest.

“I guess I’m this weirdo. I don’t operate under, you know, the idea that every government and their people are the same,” she said. “Like, you think that the people of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi government all share [the same values]? So you also believe that the Chinese government and the Chinese people are exactly the same? It’s just racism. I think it took me a second, because when people are going like, ‘You’re doing something unethical,’ I’m like, ‘Oh, these must be ethical people, let me listen.’ And then you’re like, ‘Oh no, you’re just racist.’ But these are also, by the way, the same people that would go like, ‘Trump’s not my president! I am nothing like our government.’ But other countries are?”

Cummings is the latest in a line of comedians who’ve defended their decision to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival. Aziz Ansari faced off against Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night talk show about it recently, saying that while it’s “a complicated issue,” he still wanted to perform, and that “there’s people over there that don’t agree with the stuff that the government’s doing, and to ascribe like the worst behavior of the government onto those people, that’s not fair.”

Bill Burr popped up on a live taping of the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast to say that he believes the controversy isn’t genuine, and is being inflamed by bots.

While comedian Jessica Kirson has apologized for her appearance at the fest, Louis C.K. defended his decision to perform there, calling it “a good opportunity.”

Dave Chappelle used his set at the event to say that “it’s easier to talk here than it is in America.”

Marc Maron, Shane Gillis and Zach Woods have all spoken out against the comics who chose to participate in the comedy festival.

Whitney Cummings Defends Performing At Riyadh Comedy Festival

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Whitney Cummings is speaking out on the criticism of those who performed at Saudi Arabia’s debut Riyadh Comedy Festival.

Cummings defended her performance at the festival and those of others on her “Good for You” podcast Monday.

“It’s just racism,” she said of the criticism. “I think it took me a second, because when people are going like, ‘You’re doing something unethical,’ I’m like, ‘Oh, these must be ethical people, let me listen.’ And then you’re like, ‘Oh no, you’re just racist.’”

She continued, “I guess I’m this weirdo,” she said. “I don’t operate under, you know, the idea that every government and their people are the same… You think that the people of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi government all [share the same values]? So you also believe that the Chinese government and the Chinese people are exactly the same? It’s just racism. I think it took me a second, because when people are going like, ‘You’re doing something unethical,’ I’m like, ‘Oh, these must be ethical people, let me listen.’ And then you’re like, ‘Oh no, you’re just racist.’ These are also the same people who would go, ‘Trump is not my president! I am nothing like our president.’ But other countries are?”

She also pointed out the hypocrisy of comedians who opposed the festival and of those who performed.

“When you get a sec, google ‘Saudi Arabia Live Nation’ so you can be informed on the fact that anyone who has worked with Live Nation, every stand-up comic, has taken Saudi money,” she said. “Or bought a ticket through Live Nation, went to a Live Nation event, all the actors who are represented by William Morris Agency, which is all of them. If you want to send them notes too.”

Aziz Ansari was among the A-list comedians who defended the controversial decision to perform at the fest and said he planned to donate a portion of his fee to organizations like Reporters Without Borders and Human Rights Watch.

Other comedians who performed at the fest, which ran from Sept. 26 to Oct. 9, include Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson and Andrew Schulz, among others.

Dancing with the Stars is back in the ballroom!

The ABC dance competition kicked off its 34th season on Tuesday night, signifying 20 years on air. Celebrity contestants ranging from reality stars to Hollywood legends hit the stage where they were tasked to dance to their self-proclaimed anthems.

The slate of celebrity contestants includes Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Jen Affleck , author/influencer (and wife to Alec Baldwin) Hilaria Baldwin, Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, retired NBA star Baron Davis, social media personality Alix Earle, The Traitors season three winner Dylan Efron and actor/musician Corey Feldman.

Also rounding out the cast are Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel, The Parent Trap and Freakier Friday actress Elaine Hendrix, Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying, conservationist (and son to Steve Irwin) Robert Irwin, Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui, fellow Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Whitney Leavitt and comedian/actor Andy Richter.

In a turn of events, Carrie Ann Inaba missed the show due to an illness. No guest judge stepped in to fill Inaba’s shoes, leaving only Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough on the judges panel. Contestants were scored out of 20 points, instead of the traditional 30 with three main judges.

Leavitt and Irwin walked away from the night with the highest scores, both earning a 15/20, respectively. Notably, Tonioli held up a “seven” paddle when scoring the reality TV star, but actually inputed an eight into the show’s system, so she was awarded a 15 as her overall score. In the audience, the full cast of Mormon Wives was in attendance to cheer Affleck and Leavitt on.

Later in the night, competitors revealed their triumphs to make it to DWTS, with Fishel reflecting on beating cancer, Feldman noting he was competing with scoliosis and Baldwin making her return to dance after a hip injury. When asked why Richter wanted to take part in the show, he joked that it was for the “paycheck” that comes along with competing on the reality show.

However, the standout moment of the night likely arrived after Irwin delivered the final performance and judge Hough proclaimed that he gave “the best first dance I’ve ever seen on the show.” Irwin is competing on the show 10 years after his elder sister, Bindi Irwin, competed and won with Hough during season 21.

In tune with past seasons, no one was eliminated during the premiere. However, it was revealed that during next Tuesday’s show, two couples will be voted off in a double elimination.

Returning professional dancers include Gleb Savchenko, Ezra Sosa, Britt Stewart, Val Chmerkovskiy, Daniella Karagach, Jenna Johnson, Pasha Pashkov, Alan Bersten, Rylee Arnold, Witney Carson, Brandon Armstrong, Mark Ballas and Emma Slater, alongside newcomer and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour dancer Jan Ravnik.  Former celebrity contestant and champion Alfonso Ribeiro and previous professional dancer Julianne Hough returned as co-hosts.

See the full list of scores for the season 34 premiere of DWTS below.

Jordan Chiles and Ezra Sosa: 10/20
Dylan Efron and Daniella Karagach: 10/20
Elaine Hendrix and Alan Bersten: 12/20

Season 34 of DWTS will air and stream simultaneously on ABC and Disney+ on Tuesdays, with new episodes available to stream on Wednesdays on Hulu.

Final Trailer for ‘Swiped’ Film Starring Lily James as Whitney Wolfe

“Fight for what you’ve built!” Never let them take you down! Hulu has debuted a final official trailer for a movie titled Swiped, another story of tech success in America. But instead of being a cautionary tale, this is framed as a story of great achievement in saying F you to The Man. From filmmaker Rachel Lee Goldenberg, it’s premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival this week and will be streaming on Hulu to watch later in September. Swiped is inspired by the story of Whitney Wolfe (now Whitney Wolfe Herd), founder and former CEO of the dating app / platform known as Bumble. It was created when she was ousted from Tinder and she decided to create an alternative version where women are the only ones who can starting talking with a match. Lily James stars as Whitney, along with Clea DuVall, Dermot Mulroney, Pierson Fode, Joely Fisher, Myha’la, and Dan Stevens playing Badoo founder & CEO Andrey Andreev (who was a key investor in Bumble which allowed them to start). I’m still not sure why all of this is being spun into a more positive story, when it’s still yet another corporate tech biz / cautionary tale just like the others before.

Here’s the second & final trailer (+ poster) for Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s film Swiped, via Hulu’s YouTube:

“Disrupt an industry… create an empire.” 💕 Inspired by the provocative real-life story of the visionary founder of online dating platform Bumble, Swiped introduces recent college grad Whitney Wolfe, played by Lily James, as she uses extraordinary grit & ingenuity to break into the male-dominated tech industry and launch an innovative, globally lauded dating app (two, actually), paving the way to becoming the youngest female self-made billionaire. Swiped is directed by American producer / filmmaker Rachel Lee Goldenberg, director of the films Valley Girl and Unpregnant previously, plus numerous music videos, short films, and lots of TV work including episodes of “Tiny Beautiful Things” & “Minx” most recently. The screenplay is written by Bill Parker & Rachel Lee Goldenberg, and Kim Caramele. Produced by Lily James, Jennifer Gibgot, Andrew Panay. This is premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival in September this fall. Disney then debuts Swiped streaming on Hulu / Disney+ starting on September 19th, 2025 coming soon.
