Apollo cardiologist says pollution worsens health for children born with heart defects; suggests 5 ways to protect them

The air quality is getting worse in Delhi-NCR, becoming a growing concern year after year. Toxic air is a major cause of many illnesses and affects more than just lung health. Recent reports show that it can also harm children with heart problems. Each year, as smog increases and air quality declines, children become more vulnerable to its effects. Their developing bodies may be at risk for heart defects. This concern worsens because air pollution can harm their health and make them more sensitive to harmful particles such as PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone.

What are the side effects of pollution for children with heart defects?

When pollution increases, more young patients have trouble breathing or recovering from illnesses. Children with heart defects, whether they were born with holes in their hearts or had surgeries to fix these issues, already face challenges, Dr Vikas Kohli, Pediatric Cardiologist, Founder of the Child Heart Foundation (CHF), tells Health Shots. Their hearts need to work harder. When air quality gets worse, it puts even more pressure on these fragile systems.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation. This thickens the blood and irritates blood vessels, potentially reducing oxygen flow. “Healthy children can adapt to these environmental stressors, but this is not true for kids with heart problems”, shares the pediatric cardiologist. For them, the stress from PM2.5 builds up slowly and can worsen their health over time.

What causes heart problems in children?

What can we do to help keep our kids safe from this danger? Here are five strategies that can really help.

1. Monitor air quality regularly

One important step parents can take is to stay informed about the air quality in their area. “Checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) is easy, as many apps and websites provide real-time updates”, shares the doctor. If the AQI enters the red zone, children with heart defects should stay indoors.

Pollution levels are highest in the morning and evening when traffic is heaviest. To protect your child, consider changing your family’s schedule during these times. You can delay outdoor play or adjust school drop-off times to help reduce their exposure to harmful pollutants.

2. Make your home a sanctuary

Many parents mistakenly think their homes are free of pollution. But indoor air pollution can be just as harmful. Daily activities like cooking, burning incense, or even dust from carpets can make the air unhealthy. To keep your home safe, follow cardiologist’s advice: “ensure it’s well-ventilated and close it off during periods of high outdoor pollution.”

Simple habits can improve your home’s air quality. Use exhaust fans when cooking, dust and vacuum regularly, and avoid burning materials indoors to keep your space clean. “Consider installing HEPA-filtered air purifiers, especially if you live in a polluted area”, shares the expert. Reports show that children who sleep in cleaner rooms wake up with better oxygen levels, leading to healthier mornings.

3. Emphasise regular check-ups

In a world where pollution harms health, regular check-ups are important. Many families do not realise how crucial these visits are during months with high pollution levels. Even small drops in oxygen levels can put extra strain on a child’s heart, often without showing apparent symptoms.

The expert recommends that “parents regularly check their child’s oxygen levels, blood pressure, and heart rhythm”. Many parents now use pulse oximeters at home to monitor oxygen levels. If the readings drop, it’s important to contact a healthcare provider quickly to prevent problems. Also, scheduling check-ups during the smog season can help doctors adjust treatment plans promptly. Remember, it’s easier to prevent issues than to recover from them.

4. Boost immunity to guard against infections

Lung health and heart function are closely connected, but this link is often ignored. Children with heart defects are at a greater risk for serious problems from respiratory infections, especially when the air quality is poor. “During periods of pollution, even a slight cough can develop into a severe chest infection, which may lead to hospitalisation”, shares the expert.

Choose warm water instead of cold drinks, eat balanced meals with plenty of vitamins, especially vitamin C, and make sure to get enough rest. These simple choices can help boost your child’s immune system and provide protection against common health challenges.

5. Advocate for cleaner communities

While people should take precautions, community efforts can improve air quality. Parents of children with heart conditions can play a key role in pushing for cleaner environments. “You can help by joining or starting neighbourhood campaigns to reduce pollution”, shares Dr Kohli. Consider initiatives like tree-planting, carpooling, and lobbying against harmful practices such as burning waste. These actions can make a big difference in your community.

Schools have an important role in helping children deal with air pollution. They can adjust schedules to keep kids indoors when the air quality is poor. Schools can also hold workshops to teach everyone about pollution and its health effects.

Fishing lures. Pet toys. Art supplies. Advent calendars offer personalized ways to count down

Not so many years ago, a typical advent calendar was a basic cardboard box containing some chocolates or other candies behind little daily windows.

Fishing lures. Pet toys. Art supplies. Advent calendars offer personalized ways to count down

Today, advent calendars have evolved into creatively designed collections that dispense items ranging from pet toys to soaps, fishing equipment to art supplies. They make for festive decor, and appeal to our love of ritual, surprise and small things.

Of course, if you’re gifting an advent calendar, you’ll want to give it early, in time for your recipients to count down the days to Christmas or a milestone.

Here are some countdown calendars that cater to different interests when promising daily doses of joy.

Because they’ve been good boys and girls this year, consider a daily treat calendar for the household’s pets.

Petco’s got Merry Makings’ feline calendar, with 12 days of catnip goodies and toys behind the doors of a cute cottage. There’s one for dogs, too, with biscuits, chewies and small plush toys. $25-$30.

New York-based dog-snack maker Bocce’s Bakery has a 12-day calendar containing their signature wheat-, corn- and soy-free treats, made with ingredients like peanut butter, banana and chickpeas. $14.

A cat calendar at Trader Joe’s has freeze-dried sweet potato and salmon treats, while their dog version is all about the chicken — also freeze-dried. $7.99.

What nature lover wouldn’t love a pretty calendar with different kinds of flower seeds? Terrain has a box of seven seed bombs, each packaged in a decorative ornament — bees, butterflies, bunnies and birds among them. Hang them on the tree until planting season, then watch your pot or garden as chamomile, clovers, coriander, marigold and other pollinator-friendly wildflowers greet the spring. $48.

Needlecraft artist Amanda Watson in Bend, Oregon, created a calendar you stitch yourself — one new design each day from Dec. 1 through Christmas. It’s an embroidery project even newbies can handle, and the finished artwork could be framed, or turned into a tote or pillow. $45.

A fun one for crafty kids: Mondo Llama’s 25 Days of Christmas Crafts calendar, with all the sticks, foam and felt pieces, mini markers, googly eyes and more to make a bunch of cute holiday crafts. $30.

Slots in Uncommon Goods’ Craft Project calendar hold your finished buildings so you can assemble a colorful village to display throughout the holidays; the kit includes paint markers, watercolors, glittery gel pens and more. $95.

Kids 8 and up would have a great time messing around with the Experiment a Day Science Advent Calendar from Thames & Kosmos, a science education-focused toys and games company. Supplies are included for chemistry, biology and physics experiments. Uncommon Goods. $40.

Also from Thames & Kosmos is an advent calendar version of its escape-room board games. Exit: The Game involves an intergalactic race, and each day offers a clue to get to the end. $49.95.

Colitt has a calendar for fishing fans: 24 reusable lures come in a calendar box featuring a fierce denizen of the deep on the cover. $54.99.

The Purple Cow’s 24 Family Games calendar has brainteasers, dice, and outdoor and nostalgic activities for the gang to enjoy. $40.

And for those who love “Wicked,” there’s Centric Beauty’s “Wicked”-themed advent calendar, with sparkly, shimmery balms, powders and stick-ons for lips, eyes and nails. $16.49.

Jennifer Lawrence Proves There Are So Many Different Ways to Style Bangs

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Jennifer Lawrence has been rocking bangs for the better part of a year, and she’s showing no signs of letting them grow out as she continues the press tour for her latest film, Die, My Love. The star of Lynne Ramsey’s new movie (which is looking like a strong contender in the 2026 Oscars race) has become a standard bearer for those who defend bangs tooth and nail.

While the 35-year-old is blessed with one of those chameleonic faces that looks amazing with any hairstyle, she’s proof positive that bangs don’t have to look exactly the way they did when you left the salon in order to be cute. In fact, they’re one of the most versatile hairstyles a person can have.

In mid-October last year, Lawrence debuted a version of bangs that seemed to be influenced by the by style icon Jane Birkin. They were thin front bangs with a blunt edge that was not blended into the rest of her hair. Since then, she’s played with many different styles while promoting Die, My Love, in which she stars opposite Robert Pattinson. At the Cannes Film Festival she styled them side parted like a boho diva; at the London Film Festival she gave them the voluminous touch of Brigit Bardot; at the New York premiere she kept them slicked to one side; and at the CFDA Awards she wore them wavy with a side parting.

Thus, Lawrence proves that there’s not just one way to wear straight bangs. Depending on your mood and the occasion, there are many styles you can alternate between. Got a summer wedding coming up? Leave them natural. Going to a formal event? Give them soft volume. Having a bad-hair day? Style them with a fine bristle brush. Going out with friends for a casual dinner? Add a little mousse for movement.

3 Ways to Style Banana Republic’s Leather Jacket

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Every great fall wardrobe starts with outerwear that works overtime—pieces that go the distance, from everyday commutes to weekend escapes. The leather jacket is one such staple that quickly earns its keep: timeless yet trend-forward depending on the silhouette, it can instantly pull any outfit together while adding a subtle dose of edge.

One of my daily favorites this season has been Banana Republic’s aviator jacket. Crafted from soft distressed leather and finished with a cozy shearling collar, it’s the kind of investment where you easily maximize its price per wear. Throw it over jeans and a white T-shirt or style with a dress, it transcends utility to help define your look. Think of it as your most versatile layer: Go full moto with baggy denim, biker boots, and a vintage graphic tee, or take a page from Saint Laurent’s fall runway and pair it with a voluminous maxi skirt to test out the “wrong coat” theory.

Three ways how I’m styling it myself, from work to weekend, below.

The Day-to-Night Look

When the morning rush hits, I like to rely on an outfit formula that is equal parts comfortable and polished. A voluminous midi dress layered under a V-neck sweater feels effortlessly cool, while a statement necklace adds a hint of boho charm. Banana Republic’s shearling-lined bomber completes it the idea.

The Daily Uniform

For off-duty moments, I like to keep it simple but intentional. I’ll start with classic blue denim, a vintage-inspired tee, and cowboy boots—a mix that feels at home on a Montana ranch or downtown on Lafayette St. Topped with a leather bomber, the look borrows from ’90s grunge while remaining chic enough for coffee runs and gallery hopping.

The Unexpected Pairing

When getting dressed for a night out with the girls or a romantic date night, Banana Republic’s leather bomber rises to the occasion. I love it layered over a silk slip dress to strike the balance between elegant ease and rugged cool.

After bonding over Jays, fans find ways to cope

by jummy84 November 5, 2025

When the Blue Jays’ season ended in heartbreak on Saturday, Khela Maquiling was surprised to find herself sobbing outside a Toronto bar.

The 30-year-old web designer had only started watching the playoffs to bond with her baseball-loving partner, but somewhere along the way she fell for the game — and for the nightly ritual that brought them closer.

As the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-4 win in 11 innings to capture Game 7 of the World Series against the Jays, Maquiling watched from the Drake Hotel with her boyfriend, caught up in the anguish that rippled across the city. The game drew an average audience of 10.9 million viewers on Sportsnet.

“I just started crying and I shocked myself because I didn’t think I was a sports person until that moment,” the Toronto resident recalls.

“And then my boyfriend turns to me and he’s like, ‘I am so grateful that I got to experience this entire post-season with you,’” she adds, choking up.

With her partner moving to Switzerland soon for work, watching the Jays’ playoff run had become a cherished routine, making the loss especially bittersweet.

“I’ve been coping in not the smartest way, because I keep watching videos of Vladdy (Guerrero Jr.) looking sad after the game.”

For many Toronto fans, the Jays’ post-season was more than baseball — it was a reason to gather with friends, family and partners night after night. Now, with the season concluding in crushing defeat, fans like Maquiling are left navigating the quiet, reflecting on the shared experience and figuring out how to fill the sudden void.

For Guy Felicella, a 56-year-old Vancouver father of two, the post-season became a multi-generational ritual, sparking a newfound love of the game in his youngest son, five-year-old Leo.

“He’s just became a fanatic. He loves Bo Bichette. He started asking all these questions about how to play the game. It was such a good bonding experience for me,” says the public speaker.

Felicella watched every game with Leo and his 11-year-old brother, Noah, with the kids even staying up through the 16th inning of Game 3’s 18-inning thriller against the Dodgers.

When the Jays lost Game 7, Felicella says he was “devastated.”

“I just turned the TV off. I didn’t want to see any of it.”

Thankfully, his sons have taken the Jays loss pretty well. They’ve been filling the void by watching NHL games. But Felicella says he can’t get invested in any sport quite like baseball: “It’s 162 regular season games a year, hockey’s like 82. When you get locked into that, it takes a physical and mental toll.”

Leo, meanwhile, is optimistic about next season. He’s looking forward to attending his first Jays game.

“After the loss, I tucked him into bed and he still had his Jays hat on. He told me he loved me. I mean, that’s it right there. He’ll be a Jays fan for life, but the most important thing is it brought us so close.”

While Leo is just discovering the thrill of playoff baseball, Cecilia Reyes has been there for it all. At 94, she’s been following the Jays for decades, attending games whenever she could and watching every post-season since she moved to Canada in 1973. She saw the Jays win back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993, and was hopeful they could recreate that magic.

“I’ve been watching the game a long time and I love the Jays very much, but I’m so disappointed that we lost,” says Reyes, who was born in Trinidad.

She followed all the playoff games with her daughter and son-in-law, cheering when the Jays hit dingers, and quietly mourning with them when the team fell behind.

“Whenever we won, we would laugh, jump up, clap our hands,” she says.

“We were very, very sad when we lost. But I told my family, ‘This is how games are. You have to have a loser and a winner.’”

Reyes says she’ll be occupying her time by rooting for the Toronto Raptors and Maple Leafs.

“I love sports. Any game that they have on the TV, I’ll be looking at it.”

Still, the Jays hold a special place in her heart. She’s already counting down the days until spring training.

“I hope that the good Lord gives me life to see them play again next year,” she says.

“If they keep practising, learn from their loss and put in their best efforts, I think good things will happen.”

Harvard doctor shares 7 science-backed ways to upgrade daily coffee: ‘Those who drink before noon are 16% less…’

Coffee is often an integral part of several people’s morning routine, as the caffeine boost helps improve alertness and focus. Though a hot cuppa holds many benefits for your overall wellbeing, taking your coffee the wrong way can do more harm than good.

What we do with our coffee – how we brew it, when we drink it and what we put inside it – can have an outsize impact on our health. (Adobe Stock)

So, how can you best optimise your daily dose of coffee so that it not only satisfies your cravings but also is not bad for your health? Harvard doctor-scientist Trisha Pasricha, MD, MPH, shared 7 science-backed tips in an October 22 Instagram post to upgrade your coffee. Here’s what she suggests:

7 best science-backed ways to drink your coffee

Dr Trisha highlighted that according to National Health and Nutrition Examination survey data, around 75 percent of US adults drink coffee. Therefore, it is vital to know the best way to consume it.

According to the expert, what we do with our coffee – how we brew it, when we drink it and what we put inside it – can have an outsize impact on our health. Why? Because those habits form part of a ritual, many of us enjoy them multiple times a day. Here’s her advice:

1. Add no more than 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup

“A major 2022 study found that people who drank unsweetened coffee were less likely to die than those who didn’t drink coffee-for them, even drinking more than 4 ½ cups per day was linked to living longer,” Dr Trisha noted.

But don’t worry, according to the expert, people who lightly sweetened their coffee with just a single teaspoon also experienced a mortality benefit.

2. Think twice about artificial sweeteners

Citing another 2022 study, Dr Trisha highlighted that “artificial sweeteners seemed to negate the positive pattern seen among drinkers of sugar-sweetened or unsweetened coffee, even after accounting for the presence of diabetes and other factors.”

She added, “The data are still emerging, but a growing body of literature suggests that we shouldn’t assume sugar substitutes are a healthier choice for everyone.”

3. Avoid ultra-processed coffee creamers

If you use creamers in your coffee, beware, because the primary ingredient in many popular, seasonally flavoured creamers is usually some form of vegetable oil, like palm or soybean. Dr Trisha noted that they also have another 1 to 2 teaspoons’ worth of added sugars per tablespoon.

So, next time you’re standing in the dairy aisle, read the creamer labels carefully, she suggested. “If you’re still craving cosy #PSL (pumpkin spice latte) vibes, try adding a dash of cinnamon to your cup.”

4. Use your French press sparingly

Drinking 3 to 5 cups of espresso daily or 6 or more cups of French press coffee daily, according to Dr Trisha, was associated with elevated cholesterol levels due to diterpenes. “Diterpenes can raise cholesterol by decreasing the liver’s ability to remove low-density lipoproteins. Paper filters better trap diterpenes and keep them out of your cup,” she explained.

5. Instant and decaf coffee are still great

According to a 2022 study, Dr Trisha noted, ground coffee, instant coffee, and decaffeinated coffee were all similarly beneficial. “Instant coffee and coffee pods are technically filtered. Instant coffee is brewed filtered coffee that gets industrially dried into granules, and coffee pods contain a small filter on the inside,” Dr Trisha added.

6. Get your coffee in early

Referring a 2025 study of over 40,000 American men and women, Dr Trisha noted that those who drank their coffee primarily before noon – as opposed to sipping throughout the day, including the afternoon or evening – were 16 percent less likely to die of all causes.

“Heavy consumption of coffee in the afternoon and evening blocks the secretion of melatonin by about 30 percent. But the health risks of chronic disturbances to our circadian rhythm are far-reaching – and may be more related to inflammation than simply sleep quality,” she explained.

7. Plan on that bowel movement

Lastly, she noted another benefit of drinking coffee, pointing out a bodily function known as gastrocolic reflex: It’s a physiological phenomenon by which substances enter the stomach and, within minutes, trigger contractions in the colon.

She explained that because of it, people often experience the urge to have a bowel movement shortly after meals, which, of course, can cause some social discomfort but is perfectly healthy and normal.

“Coffee is a potent trigger of the gastrocolic reflex in many people. If this describes you, plan your routine accordingly,” Dr Trisha highlighted.

Fortis orthopaedic surgeon shares 4 ways older adults can protect their shoulders: ‘Do low-impact activities such as…’

With age, the bones grow old, and movements become challenging. The joints, in particular, are responsible for all the movements, both big and small. But as one grows old, the once easy motion may feel painful. Out of all the joints, there’s one joint that doesn’t get as much attention as the knee or hip joint.

The shoulder is one of the most affected joints among older adults. (Picture credit: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Orthopaedic surgeon shares 5 tips to protect spine if you have a desk job: Don’t sit cross-legged, get up every 45 min

Dr Manit Arora, orthopaedics and sports medicine surgeon at Fortis Hospital in Mohali, shared with HT Lifestyle that the shoulder joint is one of the most vulnerable joints.“The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, which makes it prone to wear and tear”, Dr Arora explained.

Movements become severely limited, reducing one’s ability to move independently. Even small tasks start to feel overwhelming. He added, “Ignoring the shoulder joint and its associated issues can make even simple tasks, like dressing, cooking, or reaching for objects, difficult.”

That’s why your shoulder joints require as much attention as your knee or hip joints. Including simple exercises that strengthen and stretch the shoulders can help improve flexibility, prevent stiffness and keep you independent as you grow older.

Dr Arora listed these 4 things older adults need to do, from which exercises they can incorporate in their routine to what they should avoid:

Improve your shoulder joints by adhering to these. (Picture credit: Made with Chat GPT )

1. Gentle stretches

  • During your daily walks, include gentle stretches and strengthening exercises, such as arm raises or resistance band pulls.
  • They can help keep your shoulders flexible and strong.

2. Watch posture

  • Maintain good posture while sitting and standing.
  • They prevent extra strain on the shoulder joints.

3. Stay active, safely

  • Do low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or yoga.
  • They keep overall mobility intact while being gentle on the shoulders.

4. Avoid repetitive overhead movements

  • Lifting heavy objects or repeated overhead motions can increase the risk of injury.
  • Reorganise your home so daily necessities are within reach, or ask for help with heavier tasks.

Your shoulders take care of most of the upper body movements, from lifting to pulling. As the doctor revealed earlier that it is the most mobile; stiffness can show up in the shoulders. However, with a little daily care, from limiting certain types of movements or adding gentle exercises, you can safeguard your shoulder joints and prevent long-term pain and restricted mobility.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness coach shares 3 ways to control your evening cravings

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

The urge to reach out for a snack is very tempting in the evening. These cravings can be overwhelming as one may go overboard and overeat unhealthy junk to get rid of hunger pangs. But if you are on a calorie-deficient plan or general weight loss journey, it may derail your goals.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness trainer revealed how you can curb your cravings. (Picture credit: Instagram)

Addressing this common issue, Celebrity fitness coach Siddhartha Singh, who has worked with stars like Tamannaah Bhatia, shared 3 ways one can curb their evening hunger pangs.

ALSO READ: Fitness trainer reveals 5 things that made her weight loss journey easier: Walk a lot, fix sleep and more

Here are the three ways one can reduce cravings as suggested by the fitness coach:

1. Increase protein and fibre intake in nutrition

First up is to ensure your day’s nutrition is not falling short. This means you need to start by modifying your diet and adding two key essentials: protein and fibre.

The fitness coach explained about the value they bring to your life, “Number one, increase protein and fibre intake in your nutrition. Have more protein, have more fibre. This is going to keep you fuller for longer.”

2. Are you really hungry

The second point Siddhartha drew attention to was to understand the reasoning behind the cravings, and whether they are genuine or not.

“Ask yourself, are you craving because you are hungry? Or are your cravings because you are just bored or stressed? In those cases, think about standing up and walking around for ten minutes,” he said. “Even if you are in a small room, usually 99.9 per cent of the time after that ten-minute walk, you won’t be craving anything anymore.”

Recognising the difference between real hunger and emotional eating is the first step to controlling hunger pangs. You may be confusing your psychological hunger with a physiological one. As the fitness coach revealed, walking is one way to reduce the intensity of emotional hunger. Walking helps reduce stress, so after a good walk, you get better clarity.

3. Pre-planning

When you are hungry, you reach out for anything and everything nearby. But if you plan, you take control of the situation before the craving takes control of you. Often, one doesn’t think straight when they are hungry; logic and reasoning are the last things that come to mind when those hunger pangs hit hard.

Instead, the fitness coach suggested pre-planning. He explained, using his own experience as an example, “If you know, like me, that you are going to crave something at around 5:30 PM in the evening, my cravings are usually crunchy and sweet so I plan my snacks around something like a Greek Yoghurt bowl with some berries and maybe some granola in it. It’s going to give me high protein, it is going to be healthy, in my nutrition plan, and it is going to make sure my cravings are conquered.”

When you are planning ahead, you start to become more careful about what you eat, instead of impulsively scarfing down anything.

Watch Tame Impala Perform ‘My Old Ways,’ ‘Dracula’ for A24 Live Series

by jummy84 October 22, 2025

The set, directed by filmmaker Sean Durkin, featured three songs from the group’s new LP, Deadbeat

Tame Impala showcased three songs off their new album Deadbeat for A24‘s “Sound Check” live series. The set, held at New York’s Cherry Lane Theatre and directed by The Iron Claw filmmaker Sean Durkin, featured renditions of “My Old Ways,” “Dracula,” and “Loser.”

The Australian group, led by Kevin Parker, set up on the empty theater’s stage in a circle to perform the sprawling tracks. The performance stayed largely true to the album, released last week, focusing on its psychedelic rock vibe. Durkin gave the clip a moody feel with low lighting that kept the musicians in the shadows on the stage for some of the performance.

Deadbeat is Tame Impala’s highly-anticipated fifth studio album. Last week, Parker and company visited NPR’s Tiny Desk to deliver the band’s first-ever all-acoustic performance. Armed with six acoustic guitars — one of which was used as the percussion — Tame Impala played four songs over 20 minutes, opening with The Slow Rush’s “Borderline” before performing two tracks off Deadbeat, “Loser” and “Dracula.”

Parker previously described his long-awaited follow-up to 2020’s The Slow Rush as “kind of a future primitive rave act,” and an accompanying press release for Deadbeat reiterated that compelling musical aesthetic, citing Western Australia’s rave scene and bush doof culture as inspiration.

Tame Impala will hit the road later this month on their six-city U.S. tour in support of Deadbeat, beginning Oct. 27 with a four-night stand at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and concluding Nov. 17 with the third of three gigs at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum.

Build your mental resilience with the help of these 5 stress reducing techniques that calm you down.

With the relentless pace of life these days, from chasing deadlines at work to fretting over what to make for dinner, stress inevitably creeps in. Regardless of the scale of stress, you find yourself in a state of distress. In simple words, stress is a biological and emotional reaction to any perceived threat. Life tends to throw curveballs, making stress appear anytime and anywhere.

Letting stress bottle up and stay for extended periods may have unintended effects on physical health, making stress management a key priority for mental wellbeing.

To uncover some easy stress-bursting techniques, Aakriti Bhanjo, Counselling Psychologist at Rocket Health, shared with HT Lifestyle how to de-stress efficiently.

She shared an interesting analogy on why stress management is essential and explained, “In today’s fast-paced world, our minds are often overwhelmed and overstimulated. Just like a car cannot keep running smoothly without regular servicing, our minds also need intentional pauses to recharge so they can continue steering us through life’s journey.”

Aakriti revealed these 5 quick ways to de-stress anytime, anywhere:

1. 4-7-8 breathing technique

  • To practice this method, begin by breathing in for 4 seconds, then hold your breath for 7 seconds, and finally breathe out for 8 seconds.
  • Repeating this cycle 3-5 times can help activate your body’s rest and digest system.

2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation

  • This technique involves contracting and relaxing different muscle groups of your body in a specific order.
  • Begin by sitting in a quiet place and focus on a set of any area, such as flexing your calves. Slowly hold the tension for a few seconds and then let it go.
  • Continue this for different muscle groups to increase your sense of relaxation awareness.

3. Doodling

  • Doodling is a great tool to help you return to the present if you find yourself engrossed in stressful thoughts.
  • Simply take 5 minutes to draw endless loops, spirals, or patterns.

4. Squeeze Hug

  • Start by wrapping your arms around yourself, hugging yourself, and gently squeezing for 20- 30 seconds.
  • Breathe slowly while doing it. You can also rock yourself back and forth.

5. Purposeful walk

  • A 10-minute mindful walk can make a lot of difference.
  • This practice involves walking slowly, focusing on the feeling of your feet touching the ground while synchronising your breath with your steps if comfortable.

When you make stress management a part of your daily routine, you become more resilient and can navigate stressful moments in your day better without getting too overwhelmed.
