Apollo Hospital cardiologist shares warning signs of sleep trouble that may harm heart health: ‘Loud snoring…’

Sleep is the cornerstone of good health, and cutting corners means compromising on your well-being extensively. While getting adequate sleep is an essential health habit, sometimes your rest still gets interrupted, irrespective of your efforts. These interruptions can hint at underlying conditions that require prompt medical attention.

To learn more about these red-flag sleep interruptions, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Rajesh Matta, consultant interventional cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. He emphasised that if someone frequently experiences sleep disruptions, it should not be taken lightly. A proper evaluation should be scheduled, as he noted that sleep is closely tied to heart health, and any unresolved sleep problems may lead to serious cardiac issues in the long run.

Signs you need to pay attention to

Dr Matta revealed that sleep-related problems can show up in various ways: some occur during sleep, some appear immediately after waking up, and others affect your health more gradually over time.

As soon as you wake up, your own body gives clues that sleep wasn’t as restorative as it should have been. Dr Matta urged that everyone should pay attention to how they feel after waking up in the morning, as some signs of poor sleep may also indicate heart-related concerns.

“Pay attention to morning symptoms. If you’re waking up with headaches, feeling unrested despite adequate time in bed, or experiencing a racing heart or palpitations, these could be red flags,” The cardiologist explained. “Excessive daytime fatigue that interferes with daily activities isn’t normal; it often indicates poor sleep quality that’s stressing your cardiovascular system.”

While post-sleep signs are usually more subtle and sometimes may be confused with tiredness, there are some sleep problems which show up as major disturbances during the night. The cardiologist shared, “Loud snoring, gasping, or choking during sleep are warning signs of sleep apnea, which dramatically increases risk for hypertension, arrhythmias, and heart failure.”

The other warning signs include difficulty controlling blood pressure despite medication, unexplained weight gain, or increased anxiety and irritability, as per Dr Matta. These are more long-term in nature, in contrast to the immediate signs mentioned earlier. But they all affect metabolic and cardiovascular health, and the cardiologist warned against ignoring them.

How to improve sleep?

Dr Matta recommended these 4 habits, which help to improve your sleep quality. Try adding them to your daily routine:

1. Establish a fixed wake time: This is more important than a fixed bedtime because it anchors your circadian rhythm. Within a week or two, one will naturally start to feel sleepy at an appropriate time.

2. Sunlight exposure: Get morning sunlight exposure within 30 minutes of waking; it sets your internal clock and improves sleep quality that night.

3. Do physical activity: Incorporate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days, but finish at least three hours before bedtime. Exercise is one of the most powerful sleep aids, and it directly benefits the heart.

4. Create wind-down routine: 15 minutes of light reading or gentle stretching.

South Korean actor Lee Dong-Wook has come out with a strong warning against continued invasions of his privacy, such as unauthorized visits to his home and leaking of personal details. On October 14, his agency, KINGKONG by Starship Entertainment, issued an official statement dealing with these horrifying incidents.

The 43-year-old actor, who had appeared recently in The Divorce Insurance, has been subject to repeated intrusions into his personal life. The agency says that people have tried visiting his house, ventured into private areas, left improper letters, and followed his unofficial itineraries. Others have gone to the extent of obtaining his flight information through improper sources or taking the same flights in order to meet him during international travel.

These acts are blatant infringements on privacy,” the agency said. “We will take firm legal action against all types of infringement, including unauthorized visits, stalking, and leaks of information.” They also emphasized that according to South Korean law, this kind of behavior is not just immoral but illegal, including stalking charges and illegal entry charges.

The declaration was a stern warning to those ignoring individual limits and legal boundaries. Lee’s agency left it in no doubt that any such occurrence in the future would be addressed via the law courts with no mercy.

Most famous for his memorable role as the Grim Reaper on the popular fantasy drama series Goblin, Lee remains among South Korea’s greatest and most admired actors. With upcoming productions in preparation, his agency has called upon fans to respect his privacy and provide support through due and legal channels.

World Alzheimer’s Day 2025: Neurologists share 8 early warning signs of Alzheimer’s to monitor in ageing parents

Look for early signs of Alzheimer’s in your ageing parents. Finding these signs can help you provide support and manage the disease as it gets worse.

On World Alzheimer’s Day 2025, it is important to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and its early signs. Recognising these symptoms can facilitate early intervention, leading to more effective management of the condition. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour over time. The early symptoms are often subtle and can be easily mistaken for normal ageing, making early detection critical. Family members should watch for key warning signs in their ageing parents. These symptoms can help caregivers seek timely medical advice and support.

What are the 7 Alzheimer’s warning signs?(Adobe Stock)

What are the warning signs of Alzheimer?

The Alzheimer’s warning symptoms to watch for include:

1. How memory loss affects daily life

Memory lapses can happen as we get older. However, some types of memory problems are concerning and need attention.

  • Loss of new knowledge: One of the most common early signs is difficulty retaining new information. An individual might repeat questions or stories multiple times, even after receiving answers. This confusion can be distressing for both the individual and their family.
  • Forgetting significant dates and events: “While forgetting a meeting’s date or recalling it later is typical for many people, Alzheimer’s can cause individuals to forget crucial events entirely, never recalling them in future discussions”, Dr Santosh Sontakke, Consultant Neurologist, Ruby Hall Clinic, tells Health Shots.
  • Over-reliance on memory aids: As Alzheimer’s progresses, a person may increasingly depend on notes, reminders, or the help of family members to recall everyday tasks and events. If you notice your parent frequently requiring these aids, it could indicate a deeper issue.

2. Difficulty with familiar tasks

Challenges with routine activities often emerge as the disease progresses.

  • Complexity in daily tasks: What was once second nature can become increasingly complicated, such as following a recipe, paying bills, or managing finances. If your parent struggles with tasks they’ve excelled at for years, it may be time to seek advice.
  • Losing track of place: An individual with Alzheimer’s may lose their sense of direction, even in familiar surroundings. If your parent seems confused about how to get home or can’t recall a way around their neighbourhood, it may be a warning sign.

3. What are the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s can lead to significant challenges in problem-solving and planning.

  • Concentration issues, such as difficulty keeping track of grocery lists or struggling with mathematical calculations, indicate a worsening of cognitive function. If your parent can’t focus on multi-step tasks, this could be a surefire sign to investigate further.
  • Poor judgment: Uncharacteristic decisions, such as inadequate financial choices or inappropriate attire for the weather, can be a cause for concern. If your loved one seems to be making unusual decisions, it’s worth looking into.

4. Does Alzheimer’s affect the concept of time?

Alzheimer’s often distorts a person’s understanding of time and location.

  • Loss of days and seasons: Individuals may forget the day of the week or the current season. If your parent appears disoriented at times, it may be a sign of cognitive decline.
  • Disorientation: Confusion about their present location can be disconcerting. If they appear to think they are back in an earlier stage of their lives or are unsure of where they currently are, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.

5. Does Alzheimer’s cause vision changes?

Changes in visual and spatial skills are also indicative of Alzheimer’s, which can cause difficulty in estimating distances or recognising familiar faces in mirrors. “If your parent struggles visually with tasks they previously managed, take heed”, Dr PS Naga Srinivas, Neurologist, Kailash Hospital, tells Health Shots.

6. What are the communication difficulties of Alzheimer’s patients?

Communication difficulties can be preliminary signs of Alzheimer’s. If your loved one stops mid-sentence or repeats themselves frequently, it can indicate cognitive challenges. “They may also have difficulty finding the right words to express their thoughts, leading to frustration for both parties”, shares the neurologist.

7. Do people with Alzheimer’s misplace things?

A common symptom of Alzheimer’s is misplacing items. Your parent might start placing everyday items in odd locations, like car keys in the fridge or glasses among random kitchen tools. If they struggle to retrace their steps and find lost items, it’s crucial to take notice.

8. Behavioural and mood changes

Changes in behaviour and mood can also indicate Alzheimer’s.

  • Sudden mood swings: Mood fluctuations can occur without apparent reasons. If your loved one seems anxious, angry, or agitated unexpectedly, it might be an essential sign to consider.
  • Social withdrawal: Alzheimer’s patients often withdraw from activities and hobbies they once enjoyed. “They might become embarrassed by their cognitive changes, which could drive them to isolate themselves further”, explains the neurologist.
  • Personality changes: Increased suspicion, anxiety, or fearfulness can also indicate the onset of Alzheimer’s. If you notice these changes in your parent, seek professional advice.

Oncologist says ‘persistent back pain’ can be early warning sign of lung cancer; shares when you should worry

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints and is usually linked to strain, poor posture, or lifestyle habits. However, experts caution that in some cases, it could point to something more serious. HT Lifestyle has reached out to experts to know the possible hidden causes of persistent back pain, including when it may signal underlying conditions such as lung cancer. (Also read: Oncologist says ‘men over 50’ should never ignore these early warning signs of prostate cancer )

Persistent back pain? It could be a sign of lung cancer, experts warn. (Shutterstock)

Back pain and lung cancer: When to worry

“Back pain is a day-to-day complaint often invariably linked to heavy lifting, posture issues or ageing, mattress issues, which are usually relieved with OTC pain killers, muscle relaxants, but when it persists, then you need to think. It can be an early indicator of cancer. Lung cancer is a disease characterised by uncontrolled, unregulated, unchecked growth of cells in the lungs, which might spread to other parts of the body, including the axial system (spine, pelvis and other bones), causing back pain,” says Dr. Sunny Jain, Sr. Consultant and HOD, Oncology, Accord Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad NCR.

As per a 2024 study by H. Haryati et al., in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 30–40% of patients develop bone metastases, with vertebral involvement being among the most common, often leading to spinal cord compression. Research suggests that lung cancer accounts for about 15% of all cases of cancer-related cord compression. Pain is also a frequent complaint among lung cancer patients.

For instance, a Canadian study involving over 13,000 stage IV NSCLC patients reported pain in approximately 68.5% of cases. Similarly, another study that enrolled 533 lung cancer patients found that nearly 240 patients (45%) experienced pain during the course of their disease.

Warning signs that should not be ignored

According to Dr. Sunny, here’s when you should worry:

• If you have constant, deep, and worsening pain at night or during rest that is not relieved by routine treatments like physiotherapy or painkillers.

• If the pain is accompanied by other warning signs of lung cancer, such as chronic cough, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, breathlessness, or coughing up blood.

Early diagnosis of lung cancer can greatly improve outcomes. As the saying goes, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know.” So, keep your eyes and mind open, stay informed, stay fit, and don’t hesitate to see your doctor if needed.

How lung cancer can cause back pain

“When lung cancers grow, they sometimes invade nearby structures or spread to the bones, especially the spine,” explains Dr Kamran Ali, Principal Consultant, Lung Transplant and Thoracic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

“Tumours can irritate nerves, compress vertebrae, or put pressure on ribs. Pancoast tumours near the lung apex may affect nerves running through the shoulder and upper back, causing pain. Once cancer reaches the bones, the pain may worsen at night, resist painkillers, and progressively increase,” Dr Kamran.

While most back pain is harmless, you should seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Pain that is persistent, lasting more than a few weeks, especially new or worsening upper back pain.
  • Pain that doesn’t improve with rest, physiotherapy, or usual care.
  • Pain with other lung cancer warning signs — chronic cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue.
  • Shoulder pain, hoarseness, arm swelling or numbness, which may indicate tumour involvement of nerves.

Unfortunately, lung cancer is often diagnosed late in India, when treatment options are limited and outcomes poorer. Early diagnosis can allow for surgery, targeted therapies, and better survival rates.

As Dr Sunny points out, “Eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know. Awareness about less obvious symptoms like back pain can make the difference.”

If you or someone you know has persistent back pain combined with respiratory symptoms or unexplained weight loss, don’t ignore it. Consult a doctor for:

  • A detailed history and physical examination
  • Imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan, MRI)
  • Bone scan if required

“Early evaluation helps rule out serious causes and ensures timely treatment if needed. Back pain is rarely a sign of lung cancer in its early stages. But when it follows certain patterns, persistent, unexplained, and accompanied by other warning signs, it must not be dismissed as “just ageing” or “work strain.” Staying attentive, asking the right questions, and seeking timely care can make all the difference,” concludes Dr Sunny.

bitchy | Alexandra Grant posted a birthday message for Keanu Reeves warning against scams

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

A belated happy birthday to one of Canada’s best exports, Keanu Reeves! Keanu turned 61 on September 2. As is his style, Keanu celebrated his birthday privately. We didn’t get any pap shots or reports of him going out to dinner with friends. We were, however, treated to a birthday post that Keanu’s longtime girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, dedicated to him. Alexandra posted a picture of Keanu’s birthday cake along with a really sweet message thanking him for his “love and partnership.” She also thanked fans for their well-wishes and assured them that he was “well-celebrated.”

On Sept. 2, actor Keanu Reeves turned 61 years old, and while many fans and friends shared tributes online, the star kept any birthday celebrations under the radar, leaving fans wondering what he did for the occasion.

Thankfully, Reeves’ longtime partner, Alexandra Grant, shared a glimpse of how they celebrated the exciting day, along with a special message for the Matrix star. Grant took to Instagram to post the rare update, sharing a photo of a cake that read, “KEANU,” with an “X” underneath.

“Thank you to everyone for sending over sweet wishes for Keanu’s birthday yesterday… he was well-celebrated!” began Grant’s message in the caption, with the artist thanking fans for all their love.

Grant concluded her birthday tribute with a sweet note just for Reeves, writing, “And to Keanu – who saw this post as a draft! – I am so grateful for your love and partnership. Now back to painting! xo.”

The 52-year-old also took the opportunity to emphasize to fans how her partner, Reeves, doesn’t have any of his own social media, warning people not to get tricked by anyone pretending to be the actor: “If you, or anyone you know, is being taken advantage of online by someone pretending to be Keanu, please seek out help from the social media platform or your local law enforcement.”

[From Parade]

It sounds like Keanu had a great birthday. His cake looks good, too! If I had to make a guess, I’d go with it being a peanut butter and chocolate cake. Just looking at it is making me hungry. I’m normally a vanilla/vanilla (I know, the jokes write themselves with that one) or mint ice cream cake kinda gal, but if it mimics a Reese’s, then I’m all in. I also appreciate that Alexandra went out of her way to assure us that Keanu knew that she was going to make the post. He probably gave his blessing. I hope 61 brings Keanu more happiness, success, and peace.

There was also a portion of Alexandra’s post that reminded people that Keanu is as offline as they come. Here it is:

As many of you know, Keanu isn’t on any social media platforms and doesn’t see posts or memes unless someone who is shows him. If you, or anyone you know, is being taken advantage of online by someone pretending to be Keanu, please seek out help from the social media platform or your local law enforcement.

That’s a reference to a terrible scam that’s been prevalent over the past few years in which scammers pretend to be celebrities to romance their marks. They extort money from people and then promise that they’ll run away together. It’s happened with people using Keanu, Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, and more. The way these scammers prey on vulnerable or naive people is just disgusting. There is a special place in hell for those types of people. I’m glad Alexandra made sure to publicly educate fans about this scam.

Guillermo del Toro insists his forthcoming film Frankenstein is not a warning about artificial intelligence

The 60-year-old director – whose earlier work The Shape of Water won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2017 – addressed questions about AI at the film’s official press conference on Saturday (30.08.25) afternoon ahead of its world premiere, when his $120 million monster movie, starring Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac will debut in competition for the festival’s top prize.

Revealing his new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel is about humanity, imperfection and power rather than technology, Guillermo said: “It’s not intended as a metaphor for that (the dangers of AI.)

“We live in a time of terror and intimidation, certainly.

“And there’s no more urgent task than to remain, in a time where everything is pushing towards a bipolar understanding of our humanity.

“The movie tries to show imperfect characters and the right we have to remain imperfect, and the right we have to understand each other under the most oppressive circumstances.”

He added with a smile: “I’m not afraid of artificial intelligence. I’m afraid of natural stupidity.”

In the new version of Frankenstein, Jacob plays the creature locked in conflict with his creator Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar.

Guillermo added he imagined the film not as a conventional horror story but as a layered family drama. He said: “I’ve been following the creature since I was a kid.

“I waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions, both creatively in terms of achieving the scope to make it different, and to make it at a scale that you could reconstruct the whole world. I’m in postpartum depression now that it’s finished.”

Jacob was asked at the same event who in society he views as monstrous.

He answered: “Men in suits.”

Guillermo interjected: “Very well tailored (suits.)”

Oscar was also at the event and recalled his first conversations with Guillermo about taking the role of Victor.

He said: “I can’t believe that I’m here right now. I can’t believe we got to this place from two years ago, sitting at (Guillermo’s) table eating Cuban pork and talking about our fathers and our lives, to him saying, ‘I want you to be Victor,’ then not really being sure if it was true or if I was just dreaming. It just seemed like such a pinnacle.”

No Mercy For Paparazzi: Deepika Padukone’s Stern Warning To Fan Recording Dua At Airport | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 August 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Bollywood couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have been in the middle of a huge social media controversy after a video of their one-year-old daughter Dua was leaked online. The video, allegedly shot at Mumbai International Airport, captures Deepika with Dua on her lap in a buggy. The video, which gained traction online, has resulted in widespread outrage, with fans and netizens lashing out at the privacy invasion of the family.

Unconsented Recording Sparks Backlash

Deepika is seen visibly distressed and is noticed requesting the person behind the camera to put a stop to the recording but that doesn’t happen. This action has been criticized by fans who have always appreciated the couple’s strong decision of keeping Dua out of the media’s sight. Until now, the paparazzi and news outlets had largely respected the couple’s request for privacy when it came to their child.

One viewer posted, “Please remove this video. The parents have always indicated they do not want Dua’s photographs posted.” Another viewer chimed in, “It isn’t right to post this if the parents haven’t agreed. It’s a definite invasion of their privacy.” The episode has opened up wider debate surrounding the morality of taking pictures of children of celebrities without their parents’ permission.

Pattern of Paparazzi Overreach

This is not the first time that celebrity parents in Bollywood have expressed concern over their children’s privacy. Previously, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor had asked photographers not to click pictures of their daughter Raha after having first introduced her at a family event. The couple went on to reiterate that they would keep her away from the limelight owing to fears of her safety and mental state.

In like manner, Deepika and Ranveer, who brought home Dua on September 8, 2024, have balanced their approach. They had invited some paparazzi to get to know their daughter but did not publish her photos. On Diwali, they shared her name with a sentimental message: “Dua: meaning a prayer. Because she is the answer to our prayers.”

What’s Next for the Couple

On the work front, Ranveer Singh is all set to release Dhurandhar on December 6, followed by much-awaited Don 3. Deepika Padukone, who’s on maternity leave, is getting ready to roll back into the movies with director Atlee’s next film opposite Allu Arjun.

While the controversy rages online, the incident has sparked heated debates about boundaries, consent, and the right to privacy even for India’s most publicized families.

Vascular surgeon explains chest pain isn’t the only warning sign of blocked arteries: Don’t ignore leg pain or numbness | Health

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Blocked arteries can manifest in various ways beyond chest pain. A surgeon has explained that it’s crucial to recognise these signs to prevent severe complications. Dr Sumit Kapadia, a vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist, took to Instagram on August 1 to share a post about these warning signs. Also read | Cardiologist explains 10 signs of heart disease you ignore but should not: Irregular heartbeat, swollen feet, jaw pain

Blocked arteries can cause chest pain. However, blocked arteries can also cause symptoms beyond chest pain. (Freepik)

‘Most people wait until pain becomes unbearable’

In it, he said, “After treating thousands of patients with blocked arteries, these are the things I wished more people knew before it was too late.” Dr Kapadia highlighted how blocked arteries often exhibit symptoms beyond chest pain, and it’s crucial to pay attention to these warning signs.

“Most people wait until the pain becomes unbearable. Until they can’t walk without discomfort. Until breathlessness becomes a daily struggle. Or worse… until they land in the Emergency Room,” he said.

Here are some warning signs to watch out for

He went on to share a list of things he ‘wish every person would understand early on’:

⦿ Dr Kapadia said, “Chest pain isn’t the only warning sign — pain in the legs, numbness, or discolouration can also point to artery disease.”

⦿ He added, “Family history matters — if your parents or siblings had heart or vascular issues, don’t wait for symptoms to show up.”

⦿ According to Dr Kapadia: Smoking and diabetes are a deadly combo for your blood vessels.

⦿ Dr Kapadia said, “Routine check-ups save lives. A simple Doppler scan or ABI test can detect early blockages.”

⦿ He said, “It’s not just about the heart — peripheral arteries (especially in legs) are equally important and often ignored.”

⦿ “Many patients come to us at stage 3 or 4 — when surgery is the only option. But many blockages can be prevented or reversed early,” Dr Kapadia said.

Early awareness = saved limbs, saved lives

He concluded, “Let this post be your reminder: Take that symptom seriously. Book that test. Change that habit. Because when it comes to your vascular health, early awareness = saved limbs, saved lives.”

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult a vascular surgeon or a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early detection can help prevent severe complications, such as heart attack, limb loss or stroke.
