Sameer Wankhede Breaks Silence On Aryan Khan Arrest: ‘No Scapegoat In This’

Sameer Wankhede, the former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer who oversaw the controversial arrest of Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in October 2021, has spoken out about the high-profile episode. Wankhede’s interview comes just days after he raised legal objections to a scene in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Ba*ds of Bollywood, claiming it was defamatory against him. In the interview, Wankhede gave a detailed, though technically indirect, defense of the arrest and the subsequent month-long custody, tackling accusations of corruption and the ‘scapegoat’ theory.

Speaking on the Mama’s Couch YouTube channel, Sameer Wankhede initially acknowledged that he had signed an affidavit, which was submitted in the Bombay High Court, committing to not speaking about the Aryan Khan case to the media. Despite this constraint, as the interviewer continued to ask direct questions about the case, Wankhede chose to answer in detail, meticulously avoiding the explicit mention of Aryan Khan’s name while addressing the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Wankhede was pressed on why a person, referring to Aryan, was kept in custody for 25 days despite no drugs being found on them. Wankhede used this question to explain the broader legal scope of drug law enforcement, arguing that possession is not the sole factor in an arrest. “People have this misconception that if no drugs were found on you, there won’t be any action,” he explained. “If someone has been caught with drugs, then someone must have manufactured it, someone must have supplied it and there must be someone who is intending to buy it.”

He continued to outline the investigative necessity of a wider dragnet: “Do you think that we should not arrest those who manufacture them, or those who are intending to buy them because both of them will not be in possession of drugs? The law entails that the entire chain should be arrested. No matter who is the one who has the possession,” he said, implying that the arrestee could have been involved in the supply or purchase chain even without direct possession.

Defending the Arrest and Addressing Bribery Claims

When the interviewer directly asked if the arrestee was made a “bali ka bakra (scapegoat)”, Wankhede firmly defended his stance and the investigative process. “Isme bali ka bakra koi banta nahi hai (There is no scapegoat in this),” he asserted. He then detailed the process that precedes any arrest, dismissing the notion that the action was arbitrary. “After a lot of thought, there is a conscious possession, there is some electronic evidence, there is some statement, so on the basis of that, the investigation is done.”

Wankhede also reminded the public that the process of securing bail is complex and involves multiple legal clearances, not just the decision of one officer. “It’s not just Wankhede who is doing it all, there are a lot of procedures,” he said, listing the multiple legal channels that one has to go through to get their bail granted.

The former NCB officer was also asked about the serious allegation of leaking his private conversations with Shah Rukh Khan, where the star was allegedly pleading with him. Wankhede flatly denied the accusation: “Leaking would be the wrong word here. It’s neither my habit, nor am I so weak to do such things. I don’t need to do such things.”

Finally, he addressed the most serious charge leveled against him: the ₹25 crore bribery charge allegedly sought for Aryan Khan’s release. “You all saw the chats and I don’t want to repeat what is in the chats. I took action, and didn’t leave anyone. I will just say that I arrested, and nothing else,” he concluded, standing by his decision to proceed with the arrest regardless of the individual’s high-profile status.

Aryan Khan was ultimately cleared of all drug charges by the NCB in 2022 due to a “lack of sufficient evidence,” closing the contentious legal chapter, but the public scrutiny surrounding the arrest clearly remains.

‘Just did my job’: Actor playing narcotics cop on Aryan Khan’s The Bads of Bollywood opens up on Sameer Wankhede row

Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood, has been in the news ever since its release on Netflix earlier this month. The satire on the Hindi film industry has been praised by fans for its irreverent tone and ability to take potshots at everyone. However, not everyone seems to be loving it. Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede sued the show, Aryan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Netflix for defamation, claiming that the character of a narcotics officer on the show parodies him and defames him.

Sameer Wankhede has said that a character (left) played by Ashish Kumar in Aryan Khan’s The Ba***ds of Bollywood defames him.

Even as the Delhi High Court heard Wankhede’s petition last week and found it not maintainable, the actor who plays the narcotics cop on the show, has opened up on his portrayal, and reacted to the charge that the character is based on Sameer Wankhede.

Actor Ashish Kumar breaks silence

Actor Ashish Kumar plays the officer on the show, described in the credits simply as ‘plain-clothed cop’. The actor shared a picture of himself thanking fans on a newly-created Instagram account, and expressed surprise at how well the character has been received. The post received lots of comments of appreciation from fans of the show. “Small role , big impact,” commented one viewer. Another added, “Aap to main MVP ho pure show ke (You are the MVP of the whole show.”

Some, however, chimed in about the character’s alleged similarities to Sameer Wankhede. One comment read, “Bhai Woh Dhoondh raha he (brother they are looking for you).” When Ashish asked who, the commenter added, “Sameer, jiska role kiya (Sameer, whom you played). Ashish simply added a laugh emoji in response.” Another comment read, “Acted so good the real one got offended and tried to sue for defamation.”

When one Instagram user commented, “Sameer wankhede ki fielding set kar di (You roasted Sameer Wankhede),” Ashish responded, “God bless everyone, bro, I just did my job.”

About The Ba***ds of Bollywood

Ashish plays a cop on The Ba***ds of Bollywood. He arrives at a party thrown by a Bollywood producer and arrests an actor who was not in possession of any drugs. Sameer Wankhede has claimed the character is modelled on him and shows enforcement agencies in a bad light. In 2021, Wankhede famously arrested the show’s creator and director, Aryan Khan, on drug charges. Aryan was later cleared of all charges, and Wankhede was transferred out of the NCB.

The show stars Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Bobby Deol, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Manoj Pahwa, and Mona Singh in the lead roles. It was the fourth-most-watched non-English show of Netflix globally in the week of its release.

‘But how will he prove it is him’: Twitter is confused as Sameer Wankhede sues Aryan Khan’s The Bads of Bollywood

On Thursday, former Narcotics Control Bureau zonal officer Sameer Wankhede filed a defamation suit against the makers of Netflix series The Bads of Bollywood. He is asking for ₹2 crore in damages, citing a character on the show who seems to be parodying him.

A character in The Bads of Bollywood seems to be a parody of NCB officer Sameer Wankhede, something the latter has disapporved of.

However, as the character remains unnamed throughout the series, fans of the show are confused how Wankhede will prove it is about him.

Internet is confused

“No but how is he going to prove that’s his character help ??,” joked a fan on Twitter (X). “He might’ve wanted to do a cameo,” read a comment. “They didn’t mention his name or anything at all,” said a person.

A few are also happy that the episode will lead to a jucier season 2 for the show. “Aryan taking receipts to prepare that explosive season 2 script,” wrote one. “Aryan is good to troll him again in s2,” said another person. Aryan Khan is the writer and director behind the series. He was arrested by Wankhede in 2021 under charges of drugs use.

A person concluded, “Such poetic justice for #AryanKhan maza agaya.”

What is Wankhede’s case?

Sameer Wankhede on Thursday filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High Court against actor Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan owned Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix for allegedly maligning his reputation in their series The Ba***ds of Bollywood

Wankhade’s plea has sought permanent and mandatory injunction, declaration and damages against the Red Chillies Entertainment Private Limited, Netflix and others, for what he alleges is “false, malicious and defamatory video” of the production house and broadcast by Netflix as part of their television series.

Wankhade sought ₹2 crore in damages which he wants to to be donated to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for cancer patients.

“This series disseminates a misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” Advocate Aditya Giri, one of the lawyers representing Wankhade, claimed.

The plea said the series has been deliberately conceptualised and executed with the intent to malign Wankhede’s reputation in a colourable and prejudicial manner, especially when the case involving the officer and Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan khan is pending and sub-judice before the Bombay High Court and the NDPS Special Court in Mumbai.

It claimed that the series depicts a character making an obscene gesture—specifically, showing a middle finger after the character recites the slogan “Satyamev Jayate” which is the part of the National Emblem.

The main point of contention seems to be the character of an ‘NCG officer’ who looks much like Wankhede and claims to be running a campaign against drugs.
