a vicious, vulnerable and victorious comeback

Lily Allen’s been flirting with a comeback ever since she joined Olivia Rodrigo onstage at Glastonbury Festival 2022. The pair’s joyous, fiery rendition of Allen’s politically-charged 2008 hit ‘Fuck You’ was an overdue reminder of just how fearless a pop star she had been in her heyday. Her first two albums (2006’s ‘Alright, Still’ and the 2008 follow-up ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’) inspired the next generation, with everyone from Joy Crookes and PinkPantheress to Billie Eilish taking influence from her cutting, conversational songwriting.

Third album ‘Sheezus’ sounded like an identity crisis, though, and since the release of 2018’s underrated electropop ‘No Shame’, Allen’s pivoted to become a celebrated star of stage and screen instead. She’s also been topping charts and snatching headlines while co-hosting the Miss Me? podcast (though she stepped down last month). Despite these successful ventures, Lily Allen never stopped writing music – she was just never able to create anything that felt interesting enough to release. “[It was] observational stuff about the internet and the world. It just all seemed really obvious and crap,” she said in a recent interview.

Surprise album ‘West End Girl’ is certainly neither of those. Written and recorded in just 10 days following the breakdown of her marriage to Stranger Things’ David Harbour, it’s a sleek, smart collection that sees Allen back at her very best. The 14 tracks are a familiar blend of experimental electronics, chirpy dance, infectious pop hooks and brutal honesty. For the most part, ‘West End Girl’ is an updated take on the sound that made her a crossover ’00s icon that never settles for comfortable throwback nostalgia.

Starting with the title track, a dreamy, musical theatre-inspired number, ‘West End Girl’ is a slow-burn break-up album with Allen taking heavy inspiration from her own life. She’s been quick to describe it as a “story”, though, which allows her to sing openly about finding a secret bag with “sex toys, butt plugs, lube [and] hundreds of Trojans” in her partner’s “pussy palace”.

As you’d expect from her most “vulnerable” album, there’s a lot of grief and misery across ‘West End Girl’, but it never sounds depressing. Since ‘Smile’, Allen’s always had a knack for making devastation sound exciting. There’s rage behind the pulsating ‘Ruminating’ as she struggles with the realities of an open marriage, playful other woman anthem ‘Madeline’ is a dizzying cocktail of uncertainty, fury and empathy, while the gorgeous ‘Just Enough’ is as crushing as it gets, heartbreak amplified by lush strings. It feels like a much-needed purge.

Diving into the complexities of love and loss, the rumbling ‘Relapse’ is about living up to the expectations of others, joyfully funky ‘Nonmonogamummy’ tackles dating in your late thirties and the art of people pleasing, before ‘Beg For Me’ has Allen listing exactly what she needs from a relationship. It leads into the determined, no-nonsense ‘Let You W/in’ and the smirking clarity of ‘Fruityloop’, which has her quoting her second album ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’. By the end of ‘West End Girl’, it’s clear the relationship in this tale might be over, but Lily Allen’s comeback is just getting started.

Shailene Woodley opens up about feeling “vulnerable” singing in upcoming Janis Joplin biopic

Shailene Woodley has opened up about feeling “vulnerable” doing vocals for the upcoming biopic Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can.

As was announced last year, Woodley is set to star in and produce a film charting the life of Joplin, who died at age 27 in 1970 from a heroin overdose. She was a singular force in the psychedelic rock scene, with the bluesy grit to her voice making her a standout.

With pre-production on the long-gestating project ongoing, Woodley has now told People that singing for the role was one of the hardest elements of stepping into Joplin’s shoes.

“Singing is very scary. It’s very vulnerable,” she admitted.

She is working alongside 4 Non Blondes’ Linda Perry on the feature, and has described her as “an incredible songwriter, singer and music producer”.

Speaking to EW last September, Perry said she was thrilled to see Joplin’s story brought to the screen after “waiting decades for this movie to be made”. She also described Woodley’s “emotional commitment and dedication” to the role as inspiring, saying she “lives for the art”.

“I can’t think of a better person to portray such a powerful, emotional, and complex artist,” she added.

As for embodying Joplin’s style, Woodley has also told Jimmy Fallon that they were given access to clothes from the era for the film, saying, “We have the outfits. Everything.”

The long-awaited feature received $2.49 million in funding from the California Film Commission, and Woodley said in a statement that it was significant given California “meant so much” to Joplin.

“I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche, knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her.”

There have been several attempts made to develop a biopic about the legendary singer previously, with Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink and Melissa Etheridge among those attached at one point to play Joplin in films that never got to production.

Back in 2023, Margot Robbie also expressed an interest in portraying the rock star, telling NME: “I think everyone has been trying to do a Janis Joplin [movie] for a long time.”

At the time of writing, Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can has not yet been given an official release date.

bitchy | Sam McKnight: Stop attacking ‘vulnerable young woman’ Princess Kate

The pro-royal community certainly wants to have it both ways. They want to crow about how the Princess of Wales’s new hair “broke the internet” and became one of the big pop culture stories of the week. They also want to pretend that everyone is “attacking” a poor innocent 43-year-old child who has never done one cruel or racist thing in her life! For the record, I AM concerned, just not in an “infantilizing Kate” way. I’m concerned about Kate because I think she’s been in a frightful state for the past two years and it really doesn’t look like her family is helping her or caring for her whatsoever. I’m concerned because even with a half-dozen luxury vacations this year, Kate looks like she hasn’t gotten a decent night’s sleep in months. I’m concerned because the people around Kate let her step outside yesterday with that bronde/caramel doll wig perched on her head and no one helped her. Well, Princess Diana’s former hairstylist said words about all of the “nasty comments” about Kate’s hair.

Princess Diana’s former hairstylist is weighing in on Kate Middleton’s headline-making new look. After hints of a hair transformation during a brief appearance in August, Thursday’s outing confirmed that the Princess of Wales is now sporting lengthy, highlighted tresses — her blondest and longest style ever. The change prompted a wide range of commentary online, including from hairstylist-to-the-stars Sam McKnight, who served as Princess Diana’s personal hairstylist from 1990 until her tragic death in 1997.

In a strongly-worded post on Instagram, McKnight called out anyone criticizing Kate’s look.

“I am shocked, horrified, dismayed and disgusted by all the nasty comments about the Princess of Wales today,” he wrote. “A woman’s hair is very personal to her, it’s armour, defence, confidence and so much more. I cannot believe how evil and lacking in any kind of empathy are the comments, the majority made apparently by other women, attacking a vulnerable other young woman, who has no choice, by dint of who she married, and the role she took on, to bravely face the public,” McKnight continued.

McKnight also referenced Princess Kate’s cancer treatment and recovery in his message.

“I’m sure she would rather be away from the public arena. She has brilliantly and quietly, unselfishly represented our country, the soft power we still have as a nation. Cancer affects individuals differently, but is life-changing for everyone. So FFS LEAVE HER ALONE. SHAME ON YOU,” he wrote.

[From People]

Again, they want it both ways – “Kate broke the internet/she’s our perfect popular princess/she gets all of this attention for just stepping outside” AND they want to react this way when people notice that Kate rocked up to an event with a really cheap-looking hairpiece. By talking about Kate’s hair (and it is HER hair, she paid for it), we’re actually having a larger conversation about how the royal institution chews up and destroys women. We’re having a larger conversation about what fourteen years in the institution has done to Kate’s physical and mental health. I’m honestly getting a real sense of deja vu to the fall of 2023. I genuinely hope we’re not on the verge of another months-long disappearance.
