Dhurandhar Love Song Gehra Hua Out! Arijit Singh’s Soulful Voice Adds Depth To Ranveer Singh, Sara Arjun’s Sweet Romance- Watch

After the massive cultural impact of the Dhurandhar Title Track and the chart-topping Ishq Jalakar – Karvaan, Saregama, in association with Jio Studios and B62 Studios, have unveiled the film’s most awaited romantic song – Gehra Hua. Sung by the undisputed voice of love, Arijit Singh, the track features the budding sweet romance between Ranveer Singh and Sara Arjun’s characters.

Dhurandhar Love Song Gehra Hua Out

Gehra Hua is poised to become one of the year’s defining love anthems. It’s not just a song but a feeling, a mood, and an emotion designed to rule romantic playlists and tender moments through the season. With its soul-stirring melody and vocals, the song perfectly captures the intensity of a love that is deep, consuming, obsessive — and impossible to forget. Check it out here:

While the Dhurandhar trailer stunned audiences with its scale and intensity, it had only offered fleeting glimpses of the film’s emotional core – the pairing of Ranveer Singh and Sara Arjun. Gehra Hua now brings that story to the forefront, giving audiences their first immersive look into the powerful, magnetic bond that anchors the film’s narrative.

The on-screen chemistry between Ranveer and Sara crackles with an intensity that is both intimate and addictive, making the song an instant emotional hook for listeners. The track dives into the intoxicating nature of love that consumes you, breaks you, and yet draws you back every single time.

With winter setting in and romance in the air, Gehra Hua arrives as the perfect soundtrack for late-night drives, stolen glances, and quiet love-filled moments, making it a natural addition to every romantic playlist this season.

About the Film

Dhurandhar features a stellar ensemble cast headlined by Ranveer Singh, along with Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. Dhurandhar is written, directed, and produced by Aditya Dhar, and produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar. Dhurandhar is slated to release on 5th December 2025.

Texas man indicted on murder charge in shooting of ‘King of the Hill’ voice actor Jonathan Joss

HOUSTON — A grand jury in Texas has indicted the man accused of killing “King of the Hill” voice actor Jonathan Joss on a murder charge.

Texas man indicted on murder charge in shooting of ‘King of the Hill’ voice actor Jonathan Joss

But it is unclear whether Joss’ killing will be considered a hate crime. Police in San Antonio did not immediately return an email seeking comment Wednesday on whether its investigation had determined that Joss’ sexual orientation played a role in his shooting, and the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the matter.

Police allege Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 57, confronted Joss and his husband on June 1 as they were checking their mail at their San Antonio home, which had been burned down in January.

Joss’ husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, has claimed the person who killed the actor yelled “violent homophobic slurs” before opening fire.

Ceja Alvarez’s attorneys did not immediately return emails seeking comment Wednesday.

In June, Alfonso Otero, one of Ceja Alvarez’s attorneys, said his client was innocent and denied making any homophobic statements.

The grand jury returned the indictment Monday, and Ceja Alvarez remains free on a $200,000 bond.

A friend of the 59-year-old Joss has said that Joss and Ceja Alvarez were neighbors and the two had argued for years.

Initially, San Antonio police had said there was no evidence indicating the shooting was related to Joss’ sexual orientation. But San Antonio Police Chief William McManus later walked back that statement, saying it had been “premature” and that whether Joss’ sexual orientation played a role in the shooting was “part of the investigation.”

The district attorney’s office said in a statement Wednesday that Ceja Alvarez “is charged with murder, which is the most serious charge applicable to this crime under Texas law. As the case is still pending, no additional details or information can be released at this time.”

Under Texas law, a hate crime — if there’s a conviction — would be handled as an enhancement during sentencing and not as a separate charge.

Joss was the voice of John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular “King of the Hill” animated series, which ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the show, which Joss had already worked on, premiered in August.

Joss also had a recurring role on the television show “Parks and Recreation,” playing Chief Ken Hotate. He appeared in two episodes of the series “Tulsa King” in 2022.

bitchy | People: Prince William is a ‘credible voice’ with a ‘strong personal core’

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Kensington Palace has been trying to do some clean-up on a pretty terrible PR crisis for Prince William in recent weeks, if not months. Personally, I think this latest crisis started in September, when Prince Harry spent four days in England, then traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine. The British media couldn’t hide the fact that William was close to a nervous breakdown because… Harry got good press and Harry met with Charles. It’s been downhill since then, with William and Kate’s refusal to work, their unpopular move into Forest Lodge (a move where they grabbed 150 acres of a public park and shut down a children’s center), and the pièce de résistance, the Earthflop debacle in Brazil, during which William’s big-boy thunder was stolen by his family. We should also note that William surrounds himself with clowns as advisors, which we’ve also seen in recent years, with their horrifically bad crisis management. Which means their version of “clean up” is just “declare victory and pretend that everything is going to plan.” From People Magazine’s curious article:

Optimistic Huevo: “He’s leaving Rio with a renewed sense of optimism about what Earthshot can deliver. We’re seeing the impact Earthshot finalists are delivering. The momentum is really feeling unstoppable,” a palace source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

Credible Bill: “He’s a very credible voice,” the U.K.’s ambassador to Brazil, Stephanie Al-Qaq, tells PEOPLE. “He’s more than ready to step into that space.” Adds Jacinda Ardern, the former New Zealand prime minister and an Earthshot trustee: “He’s pretty consistent. It’s been, ‘How do we do more? How do we scale? How do we better support the finalists?’ ”

The Prince Andrew mess: “William has a strong personal core,” as does his wife, Kate Middleton, says a close source. Together, the insider adds, they embody values “such as constancy, consistency, steadiness and a safe place for the country to reach out to.”

William wants Andrew to be dealt with quickly: In the weeks prior [to Earthshot], the family had confronted the fallout from his uncle’s royal scandal. While William fully supported his father’s decision, there are those who believe he urged closure sooner — and more strongly. “There was pressure from William, who would not want to inherit the headache,” says a source close to the royal household. Adds a palace insider: “He would want it dealt with as quickly as possible.”

Intense Bill: In Rio, William’s environmental purpose took on an unmistakable intensity. From the Sugarloaf summit to Copacabana Beach, the Prince of Wales carried himself less as a royal guest and more as a global advocate. “He’s a door-opener,” says Runa Khan, founder of Friendship, a nonprofit aiding climate-affected communities in Bangladesh, and an Earthshot winner.

Statesman Bill: On Nov. 6, he brought that energy to Belém for the world leaders’ COP30 summit. Stepping off the plane alongside U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer — who had also attended the Earthshot Prize the night before — he looked at home among politicians and heads of state. Following in his father’s footsteps on climate advocacy, William delivered his speech in his own empathetic style, reminiscent of his late mother, Princess Diana, who made her own memorable visit to the country in 1991.

But Harry got attention: The royal remained engaged even as his estranged brother Prince Harry unexpectedly announced a trip to Canada for his own series of Remembrance events — catching palace aides by surprise, despite Harry’s team saying it had informed them.

[From People]

I find it embarrassing when American outlets cut-and-paste from palace emails. This kind of embiggening coverage is horrible for both People Mag AND William. Once you see how William and Kate force the press to treat them like reluctant toddlers who need wall-to-wall praise for every single thing, you can never unsee it. “William delivered his speech in his own empathetic style, reminiscent of his late mother, Princess Diana.” You are a liar telling lies. “The Prince of Wales carried himself less as a royal guest and more as a global advocate…” They’re still trying to force people to forget those volleyball photos. And the “credible voice” stuff is hilarious – Kate gets the same fluffery too, she’s a “credible expert” on the Early Years, don’t you know. Will and Kate really are the two most credible experts in environmentalism and childhood development, we swear! They’re both global statesmen! William is just like Diana! No, Kate is just like Diana! Embarrassing.

“I hear calls for help and…” “You just can’t help yourself.” “Bingo.” Viva Kids has revealed the official US trailer for an animated movie called Charlie the Wonderdog, arriving to watch in US theaters in January 2026. This animated adventure comedy is about a dog who gets superpowers and teaches everyone the true meaning of heroism. Made by the Canadian animation company ICON Creative Studios. A shy boy, Danny, imagines a world in which he & his cherished dog, Charlie, star in their own superhero adventures. When Charlie is mysteriously abducted by aliens, he returns gifted with true superpowers and emerges as Charlie the Wonderdog, the greatest superhero the world has ever seen! A fun story for the whole family about friendship, loyalty, and finding the hero inside us all. Together they battle an evil cat threatening humanity. With the voices of Owen Wilson as Charlie, Sebastian Billingsley-Rodriguez, Anthony Bolognese, and Mela Pietropaolo. This looks extra goofy with some cringe humor. Not exactly an original concept but it might be entertaining with Owen Wilson’s voice bringing laughs as this good boy doggie dog. Take a look.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Shea Wageman’s Charlie the Wonderdog, direct from YouTube:

Morgan Freeman Taking Legal Action Over Al Replicas Of His Voice: My Lawyers Have Been Very, Very Busy

Chile…y’all done pissed #MorganFreeman off!

The veteran actor, who’s been a force in #Hollywood since the 1960s, arguably has one of the most recognizable voices in pop culture. Beyond his acclaimed film career, Freeman’s voice has long been a staple in animation, narration, music collaborations, and even video games. However, with the rise of #AI, his signature vocals are now being replicated for projects he never recorded or approved.

Airing out his frustrations on the matter to The Guardian, he said, “I’m a little PO’d, you know. I’m like any other actor: don’t mimic me with falseness. I don’t appreciate it and I get paid for doing stuff like that, so if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.”

Making it known that his legal team is taking care of the issue, he continued, “Well, I tell you, my lawyers have been very, very busy.” When asked if any cases are being pursued, Freeman added, “Many, yeah. Quite a few.”

Should more celebs take legal action when AI mimics their voice or likeness without permission?

Shraddha Kapoor becomes the voice of Judy Hopps in Zootopia 2’s Hindi version

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Shraddha Kapoor is entering a fresh chapter of her artistic journey. Loved for her bright smile and effortless charm on screen, she is now stepping into the Disney universe. Shraddha will voice Judy Hopps in the Hindi version of Zootopia 2, the spirited bunny police officer who became a worldwide favourite. This time, her voice becomes the main storyteller, allowing fans to experience her talent in a new way.

Disney India shared the announcement with a cute poster showing Shraddha and Judy together. Along with the visual, the official page wrote, “Bohot jyada excited to join the #Zootopia2 family, as the voice of THE AMAZING Judy Hopps in Hindi — she is feisty, courageous, enthu cutlet aur cute toh hai hi bachpan se! Kal aa raha hai aapke liye ek anokha surprise. Stay tuned! #Zootopia2 – In cinemas November 28.” The moment the post went live, fans celebrated the news, thrilled to see Shraddha enter this animated world.

What makes this casting so perfect is Shraddha’s expressive and lively voice. She has a natural softness paired with energy, which matches Judy’s fearless and hopeful personality. Instead of her expressions or performance taking the lead, this time her voice carries the emotion. It is refreshing to see her explore a space where every feeling must be conveyed through voice alone.

With Shraddha now part of the Zootopia universe, the anticipation for the film has only grown. Judy Hopps represents determination and endless optimism, and Shraddha’s playful tone will make the character even more lovable in Hindi. As the film arrives in theatres on November 28, fans already know she will make Judy sound full of heart and enthusiasm.

The Voice Without a Face

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Maintaining an air of mystery in our all-access digital world is nothing short of an anomaly. But staying anonymous? That’s a miracle. Yet somehow, Ado has done so for the past five years, ever since debuting with her first viral hit “Usseewa” in 2020. Her newest single “Magic” comes out on Halloween.

What we know about the singer today is nominal. She’s 23 years old, hails from Japan and initially emerged as a utaite singer (uploading cover songs under the guise of an avatar) mixed in with the synthesized Vocaloid scene and has now become the most-streamed Japanese artist in the world. More than 80% of listeners come from outside her homeland, and on Spotify alone, “Usseewa” has logged more than 270 million streams while Ado claims 6.5 million monthly listeners. In 2022, she also found fame as the singing voice of Uta in the anime film One Piece Film: Red.

In February, Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched Ado’s music into the stratosphere on its Falcon 9 rocket as part of an elite Cannes Gala “BandWagon2” project. According to Variety, the project “aims to—eventually—bring music to the lunar surface” and “represents a collaboration between creative teams from the U.K., Japan and the U.S.”

(Courtesy of Shore Fire Media)

Back Earthside, this August Ado also wrapped up a series of 14 sold-out arena shows in the U.S. where 500,000 people were in attendance, a record for a Japanese artist. Of course, there was a strict no photo/video policy and she performed in full silhouette, from the confines of a cubed cage that provides another protective barrier.

Even so, over time Ado has built a huge following of fans that like to refer to themselves as Adomins who don’t seem to mind they don’t know the proverbial Oz behind the curtains and are just as content to idolize an anime-style character decorated with a trademark blue rose (once impossible to find in nature, it was genetically created for the first time in 2002, Ado’s birth year). It’s reported that even at meet and greets, just Ado’s arm is visible as it reaches out from a hole in a box to shake hands while remaining incognito.

Keeping Ado’s identity under wraps truly takes a village and they’ve got it down to a science at this point. During our recent Zoom chat, Ado had her camera off, her screen name displayed simply as “artist,” while five people from her team (also not visible) chirped in when necessary. Such as when it was asked if there was anyone in her life who knew she was moonlighting as Ado, and the question was quickly shot down out of fears the answer might give her identity away.

(Credit: Viola Kam)

But as we get to talking (through a translator), it’s evident that there’s something about Ado’s carefully paced responses and warm voice that makes her come off as relatable, thoughtful and kind. Even without knowing a lick of Japanese, it starts to make sense how throngs of fans can connect with her through the iron wall. Ado says it’s simply the magic of J-pop.

“As someone who is part of the J-pop scene in Japan and also someone who loves J-pop music, I feel like [it] is really quite interesting and has a very distinct place compared to music elsewhere in the world. It has a distinct personality to it … and even without understanding the language I think there’s something that people can connect to and relate to through the music. There are moments within the show where I felt that the audience and I were really connecting,” the singer shared, recalling high points in her recent Hibana World Tour, her biggest to date, that brought her to new pockets of the globe.

Many of the concerts were described in reviews like massive rock productions (fitting, since some of Ado’s earliest influences outside of J-pop singers like Hatsune Miku were KISS and Queen), and she used the platform well to broadcast hits from two studio albums, 2022’s Kyōgen and 2024’s Zanmu, as well as some of her favorite covers like Sia’s “Chandelier.” Choosing to perform live and in the flesh is incredibly perilous as it risks blowing her cover, but Ado’s mission is clear: “I hope that I can continue to connect with people all over the world through my music and bring a sense of Japan to them.”

(Courtesy of Shore Fire Media)

There’s more to it than that, however. Ado also deeply connects with her Gen Z generation. I’m evidently the first person to bring to her attention that “Ado” in French slang means teenager and it’s kind of kismet since she not only hard-launched her career the day before her 18th birthday but the song “Usseewa” itself is wrapped up in themes of youthful rebellion. Naturally, it struck a chord when it was released during the pandemic.

The song title loosely translates to “shut up,” and is frequently punctuated with pent-up screams and an overall aggressive temperament that gives it more of a punk than pop element. The song—admonishing the conformity Ado found rampant in her culture—was such a different flex and became so popular in Japan that “there were also calls of banning the song from schools citing its negative effects on children,” per Grammy.com. While some of Ado’s frustrations are still there, she admitted her ways of coping have changed with time.

“It’s been five years since I came out with ‘Usseewa’ and this year I turn 23. In Japan if you’re 23 years old it usually means you’re part of society, working, and being an independent person. But when I debuted with ‘Usseewa’ there was more of a rebellious theme or streak to myself and parts of myself where I was rebelling against society. … I shaped that pain more into anger at that time,” the singer said, though nowadays she calls herself “calmer” and said, “I can see things in a more relaxed way.”

(Courtesy of Shore Fire Media)

Ado’s latest album, Zanmu, signifies that shift: The album title refers to the concept of unfulfilled dreams. “This is something that I can also say for myself, but I would like to encourage people to not hesitate and take a direct path towards what they are searching for or looking for. I’d also like to be able to, maybe, nudge somebody gently towards happiness. These are things I would like to sing about—if I could alleviate somebody’s pain, somebody’s feelings of sadness, or somebody’s feelings of loneliness,” she said, adding, “These are some things I was going through as well when I came out with ‘Usseewa.’” In fact, cloaking her identity was just as much about upholding the standards of Vocaloid culture as it was shirking from her own feelings of self-worth and self-consciousness. Now, she said, her music is “about trying to lead people more towards happiness and less pain. It’s more about liking to tell people you are not alone.”

As technology and AI continues to ramp up in both the music industry and society at large, an avatar-driven character like Ado continues to come alive at an interesting time. It’s a topic she’s interested in discussing, promoting the idea of finding her own version of authenticity even if you can’t ever see her in real-life. “Obviously as an artist there are concerns. … I’ve actually heard my voice used on the internet with AI … [where I] was singing a song I had never covered before. I’ve seen that happen with other artists as well,” she admitted.

“As for Ado, I’m not really worried about AI taking over my line of work. I don’t think AI can do what I can do.” She added, “You can’t see me but, for example, when I’m touring I’m actually performing on stage even though it’s only the silhouette you can see. Having been on two world tours, I know there are people all over the world that can tell who I am even if they can’t actually see me. … That connection between people can’t be generated by AI … and nothing that AI creates can surpass the real thing.”

Pierre Robert, Voice of Philadelphia Rock Radio, Dead at 70

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Pierre Robert, the voice of Philadelphia rock radio for 44 years as a DJ on 93.3 WMMR, died Wednesday. His agent confirmed his death to Rolling Stone. Robert was 70.

On the air from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday through Friday, Robert — pronounced Ro-bear — was part of the fabric of Philadelphia. He was a colorful, ubiquitous figure, known for his long hair and gray beard and the welcoming way he saluted callers: “Great day in the morning!” His daily time on the air was punctuated by hearty laughs, self-deprecating jokes about his disregard for time (he was perpetually late, on “Pierre Standard Time”) and wafer-thin sports knowledge (to Robert, every Philly team was “the boys in blue”), and a playlist that, even in the era of corporate radio, took musical risks.

Born William Pierre Robert in California in 1955, he cut his teeth on a San Francisco progressive rock station before ultimately heading east. In 1981, he joined WMMR in Philadelphia, where he worked until his death. Robert, true to his roots, was a passionate fan of the Grateful Dead, but he was an especially unwavering champion of hometown bands in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and the surrounding area, regardless of their level of fame. His playlists included locally grown artists like Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Hall & Oates, the Hooters, and his beloved Beru Revue.

“He didn’t care if you were the fad or the fashion of the moment. He just cared,” Jon Bon Jovi wrote in tribute to Robert on Instagram.

“What made him so great is that he truly cared about the music,” the band the Offspring wrote about Robert on social media. “He was first and foremost a music fan, and his listeners knew it, because they saw him in the pit with them. Just as we were honored to see him in the pit at our shows.”

Along with his noon “workforce blocks” — a cluster of songs by the same artist — Robert also schooled listeners on rock & roll history, especially of the local kind, in his “On This Day” segment. Deep diving into the concert calendar, he’d list off who was playing where in Philly on that particular date. It was a way of preserving the past and honoring those who came before, a hallmark of Robert’s broadcasting style.

Editor’s picks

The centerpiece of Robert’s on-air year came every December, with his annual Christmas Eve show. It was an hours-long marathon of holiday songs, both traditional and rock-based, peppered with copious amounts of Christmas-themed audio snippets. Jackie Gleason’s monologue in the yuletide episode of The Honeymooners was played regularly, along with Cheech & Chong’s “Santa Clause and His Old Lady,” and a corny bit known to loyal listeners as “The Jaguar.”

The throughline for Robert, however, was yet again the local. He played Beru Revue’s live Christmas medley; Philly songwriter Alan Mann’s “Christmas on the Block,” about blind children who decorate their home; and a montage of heartwarming lyrics welcoming former Delaware Valley residents back home.

Trending Stories

For Philly listeners, Robert’s voice was just that: home.

“His voice helped the hungry and the homeless, and he did it because he cared. About you, about me, about making the world a little kinder wonder filled place to live,” Bon Jovi wrote. “His memory will live with us as it will with all of the people he touched. That man is Pierre Robert. The legendary DJ.”

Ralph Edwards Covers Ed Sheeran on ‘The Voice’ Knockouts

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

When Michael Bublé suggested that “Wreck-It” Ralph Edwards could smash the competition in this 28th season of The Voice, he was onto something.

Edwards had just finished an impressive rendition of Teddy Swims’ “I Lose Control” in his Battle with Jerrell Melton, when Bublé let the love flow.

See latest videos, charts and news

The Fresno, California could “go far on the show,” he remarked.

There’s apparently no stopping Edwards, as he shifted gears from that final round of Battles on Monday night, Oct. 27, and leapt into the first wave of Knockouts.

Next up, the 30-year-old Team Snoop singer went for the heartstrings with a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Dive.” Edwards, who proposed to his partner after his Blind Audition, didn’t have any trouble finding the emotional buttons.

“Wow, Ralph,” coach Niall Horan enthused. “The stuff that you were doing. I actually didn’t recognize it as your voice. It was so different than what we’ve heard. You could easily win this show, dude.”

Reba McEntire weighted in. “Wow. What a voice,” the coach and country star remarked. “It comes from your toenails. It’s just incredible.”

Bublé knows he’s looking at, and hearing, the real deal. “You have that grit in your voice, but man, you sort of saved it. You let us hear the sweetness and the softness,” the Canadian king of Christmas remarked. “It looked easy for you, dude.”

Snoop Dogg had a call to make. Edwards or Kenny Iko?

There could be only one. The rap legend tapped Edwards, while Iko goes home. “I think Ralph has the ‘it’ factor,” Snoop noted. “The ‘it’ factor is that he could actually win it, this competition. Knockout performances are really the groundbreaking, award-worthy, top of the line, performing at his highest level.”

Earlier, Snoop welcomed Zac Brown to mentor his team before the Knockouts. “My team is smoking,” Snoop remarked, with some authority.

The Knockout episodes will air every Monday on NBC until Nov. 24. Then, the Playoffs will beam out on Monday, Dec. 1 and Monday, Dec. 8 on NBC, with the Season 28 Live Finale set to spread over the two nights of Dec. 15 and 16. Episodes stream the following day on Peacock.

iLe’s Boleros Give Women a Powerful Voice » PopMatters

There’s love that’s just lovely, and then there’s the love that digs under your skin and sets your guts on fire. Likewise, the Latin boleros can be gauzily romantic, but on Como Las Canto Yo, the singer iLe is more interested in those whose hearts and intellects are aflame.

Boleros began in Cuba over a hundred years ago and have always been a Latin music staple. Sometimes, they are the slow dance break from the more frenetic mambo or salsa tunes; other times, they are the main event, drawing lovers into their measured, deliberate sway. Sometimes, they celebrate the initial limerence phase of love; other times, they embody Tennyson’s bittersweet dictum that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved.

On her latest album, the Puerto Rican singer iLe cherry-picks some classic and deep-cut boleros, mostly choosing ones that tell the story of ill-fated love. Her vocal outpouring makes the songs seem like cousins to flamenco or Portuguese fado, whose goal is to express deep and powerful emotions.

Boleros from the golden age of mambo often feature lush orchestral embellishment, but iLe leaned toward the stripped-down street sound side of the genre. In most songs, her powerful voice plays off just a guitar or a couple of instruments, making it seem more raw and urgent.

In some songs, such as the initial single “Un Amor de la Calle”, which was popularized in 1975 by the late star Hector Lavoe, iLe tells the story of a betrayal by an untrustworthy lover. It’s a heartfelt, straightforward tale told in slow, sultry tones. With soft percussion and a sparely played electric guitar, iLe conjures an arrangement as richly textured as an orchestra. The protagonist is resolute and angry, but it’s a bittersweet moment, capped with a bitter laugh—the siren saying farewell and good riddance. “I thought you were sincere / And I gave you my life / Without any conditions / But it was all a dream.”

Elsewhere, this same ambivalent goodbye to a lover is expressed in more poetic terms, such as “Moon’s Lament”. iLe fills the air with her voice, only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, evoking a quiet night that reverberates with sadness and solitude. The song’s lovely vocals celebrate a love even when it’s slipped away. “A drunken song of bitterness / That the sea murmurs/How to erase this long sadness / That your goodbye leaves behind / How can I forget you if deep inside / You are there.”

Deviating from the classics, iLe sings “No Te Detangas (Don’t Stop)” written by her grandmother, Flor Amelia de Gracia. In contrast to what one might imagine of a song written by a grandmother, this one expresses unequivocal sexual desire. She sings it with clarity and tenderness, accompanied by a sweet acoustic guitar and a dawdling, hand-slapped conga. “Don’t stop / In such a delicious moment / Don’t stop / In such a glorious moment / Like a tattoo I want to carry you / All over my body.”

One of iLe’s vocal touchstones is La Lupe, the Cuba-born singer known for her electric performances, who exploded in New York City in the 1960s, performing with Tito Puente. She tackles two of her songs here. In “El Verdugo (The Executioner)”, she is accompanied by a small combo, but successfully distills the song’s essence, a master class of technique. Where La Lupe was over the top, iLe unreels her stunning voice with perfect control. She works up to a sustained, blow-you-away vocal crescendo. “You are the executioner / Of the love that knew how to lead you / To a path of happiness / That you have never crossed again.”

She follows up by switching gears with “Pepito,” the 1961 hit by the trio Los Machucambos. The quaint tune has a playfulness not heard elsewhere, a sweet tribute to the trio’s long career.

iLe was featured on Adrian Quesada’s experimental Boleros Psicodelicos albums, and her “Si te Contara” has a similar anything-goes, retro-futuristic vibe. The big band sound with horns and vibraphone is processed to sound muffled, giving it the flavor of vintage vinyl, though her voice is front and center, singing confidently to a former lover. “If you knew, would you care / If you were told that there is no light or joy left in me / That your memory is the greatest harm I do to myself / For living dreaming that you will return repentant.”

The next tune takes a very different experimental turn. For “Un Poco Mas (A Little More)”, iLe completely remakes an old tune as an a capella exercise, but only accompanied by a chattering cloud of hand-played percussion. In another surprise turn, she covers La Lupe’s “Puro Teatro”, again showcasing her voice, only accompanied by a church-y electric organ.

In the penultimate song, iLe pays a beautiful tribute to the groundbreaking Puerto Rican female songwriter Sylvia Rexach with the gently heartbreaking “Yo Era un Flor (I Was a Flower)”. The narrator is a flower speaking to a passing butterfly, telling her story, a parable for young women who give themselves to someone who quickly moves on.

The narrator’s sad humility is heartbreaking, but the beauty of its expression—poetically and vocally—embodies what Brazilians call saudade, a bittersweet mix of feelings—a sadness that is still somehow uplifting in its beauty, a reminder of the privilege of feeling and being alive. “I was a flower / That grew in the weeds / And was offered a fleeting love / A nightingale took my chalice / Destroying my soul / And leaving me plunged in pain / I was a flower / That lost its color.”

iLe ends Como Las Canto Yo by putting romantic love aside and taking up a political message. A performer not shy about speaking out politically, she sings the Puerto Rican anthem, “La Borinqueña”. Accompanied by a single martial-sounding drum, she resurrects the song’s original lyrics written in 1868, when the island undertook its first armed rebellion against Spain. Puerto Rican poet Lola Rodriguez de Tío wrote the initial words.

The call to arms within the lyrics was tamed down when the island became a United States territory. Still, iLe goes back to the earlier, angrier lyrics, no doubt feeling the rise of sentiments against Latinos in the United States. “Wake up, Borinqueño / The signal has been given / Wake up from that dream / It’s time to fight.”

iLe’s journey to bolero warrior began in her pre-teens when her older brothers asked her to sing along with their fledgling rap group. What started in their living room in San Juan became Calle 13, one of the best-selling Latin music groups known for taking up social justice causes. Born Iléana Mercedes Cabra Joglar, her little sister was dubbed “PG-13” by a cousin who observed her singing with them in clubs where she was too young to be in the audience.

At age 25, she released her 2016 solo debut, the Grammy-winning iIlevitable, under her new stage name, iLe. The album surprised many fans since it featured a retro big band sound, including some boleros. On her latest, iLe revisits the past, but refashions it in unexpected ways and, along the way, empowers women in a genre that often gives men dominance.

Across her three solo albums, iLe has proven to be an artist constantly looking to explore new sounds. With Como las Canto Yo, which means “how I sing them”, she shows that even with the confines of a single genre, she can create a variety of soundscapes for her stunning vocal instrument and put her own mark on Latin music.
