Tate McRae Is the Leader of the Sheer-Dress Pack at the VMAs 2025

Tate McRae at the VMAs 2025 led the pack of ladies in sheer dresses on the red carpet, proving that the trend isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s actually getting chicer as time goes on.

The singer arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards show on Sunday night in a custom look by Ludovic de Saint Sernin that is giving the red-carpet version of pool-party day at your bachelorette party.

Tate McRae’s VMAs dress was complemented with glam by makeup artist Lilly Keys, who worked with Neutrogena products to give McRae a glowy and sun-kissed look.

“My vision was sun-kissed ’90s supermodel vibes with soft brows, radiant skin, and that lived-in glow,” said Keys in a press release. The look was rounded out by applying Lilly Lashes Sheer Band Inviting Half Lash to the singer’s eyes and styling her hair down and tousled with a classic middle part.

Of course, McRae wasn’t the only girlie to hop on the sheer-dress bandwagon for the awards show. As we all know, celebs have been pushing the envelope of the trend on the carpet for the past few years, and the 2025 VMAs were no exception.

Nikki Glaser went the polar opposite of McRae in her black sheer ensemble, though she similarly wore her hair simple and natural. If the looks seem complementary, that’s because Glaser’s dress is also by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, with a Victoria’s Secret black stretch cotton V-string underneath.

VMAs 2025 TV Ratings Surge on CBS

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

The audience for the MTV Video Music Awards, unsurprisingly, spiked with a move to CBS.

The broadcast network, airing the awards for the first time, fueled a 42 percent increase in viewers for the VMAs. Sunday’s show, which also aired on MTV and streamed on Paramount+, delivered 5.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s earliest-available numbers (that include out-of-home viewing). That’s the most for the show in six years.

The 2024 telecast, including the pre-show and encore airings, averaged 4.09 million viewers on MTV and 11 other Paramount cable outlets. (The directly comparable number here is 3.91 million viewers, according to Paramount; final adjustments for the ‘25 telecast to follow.) CBS has a much wider reach than MTV does, as it’s available (at least in theory) to anyone with a TV — some 125 million homes in the United States — and means to capture the broadcast signal. MTV, by contrast, is available in only about half as many households.

The 2025 Video Music Awards were the most-watched entertainment special on CBS since Feb. 2’s Grammy Awards.

Last night’s VMAs had some serious competition from an all-time great Sunday Night Football game on NBC. The close out the NFL’s opening weekend of 2025, the Buffalo Bills came from behind to defeat the Baltimore Ravens as time expired. Buffalo erased a 15-point deficit in the final 4:05, winning 41-40 at home.

Lady Gaga won the award for artist of the year along with three other awards Sunday. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each took home three honors; Grande’s “Brighter Days Ahead” won video of the year, and Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet took album of the year.

The 2025 VMAs were hosted by LL Cool J, who has quite a history with CBS and its sister cable channels, which were formerly (twice) under the Viacom umbrella. LL was a cast member on CBS series NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawaiʻi, and he hosted Lip Sync Battle on Paramount Network. As a rapper, he was a staple on MTV and was named among VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time” list.

And before you ask, no, Taylor Swift is not attending the VMAs this year. Despite earning one nomination for Artist Of The Year, Swift has opted to forego this year’s awards ceremony. With her next studio album, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’, dropping next month, 2026 is sure to be a bigger year for her.

The 2025 MTV VMAs red carpet is here! Tonight, the annual awards ceremony—one of music’s biggest nights, aside from the Grammys—will hand out accolades to some of the buzziest musicians of the year, across competitive categories such as Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. The night will also feature a number of can’t-miss performances from artists such as Mariah Carey (who is receiving the prestigious Vanguard Award this evening), Doja Cat, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, and many more.

Before the ceremony kicks off, however, the red carpet affair will deliver plenty of memorable celebrity outfits to take in. After all, the VMAs has a history of encouraging bold and avant-garde looks. Remember the infamous Lady Gaga meat dress, or Lil’ Kim’s purple pasty back in 1999? Since its genesis in 1984, the VMAs always a place where fashion gives birth to pop culture moments—especially on-stage, where pop icons like Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera have all performed wearing matching wedding looks. What will tonight hold, meanwhile? Who can you expect on the 2025 VMAs red carpet? We are about to find out—but one thing you can count on is to expect the unexpected.

Below, catch all of your favorite stars here as they hit the red carpet for the 2025 MTV VMAs, and stay tuned for more fashion coverage throughout the night.

VMAs Performances Ranked: 2025’s Best & Worst

See how the newcomers, hitmakers and veterans stacked up.

The 2025 VMAs have wrapped, with Lady Gaga walking away from the USB Arena in Elmont, N.Y., with the most Moon Person trophies this year – four in total. Well, technically Gaga left the arena before winning all four of those VMAs – after all, she had a headlining show to perform at Madison Square Garden – but she was there long enough to collect one in person before jetting off to Manhattan.

Hosted by LL COOL J, the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards were one of the best VMAs in recent memory, a smart mix of newcomers who brought their A-game (and inventive visuals) and veterans who demonstrated why they’ve lasted in the game so long. Of the latter category, each one received some sort of Moon Person trophy during the three-hour telecast, with Mariah Carey receiving the Video Vanguard Award, Ricky Martin collecting the Latin Icon Award and Busta Rhymes getting the Rock the Bells Visionary Award.

As with any awards show, the awards are important, sure – and based on the deeply personal acceptance speeches from ROSÉ and Ariana Grande, they seem to mean quite a lot – but most viewers are tuning in to see some incredible live music. And this year’s VMAs did not disappoint.

We’re running down our ranking of the 2025 VMA performances, from worst to best, below. We’re not including the side stage performances (doesn’t really seem fair to rate a 70-second performance against a full-on song) or the pre-recorded halftime show from Gunna (though that was pretty sick). All that being said, here we go.

  • Post Malone & Jelly Roll

Usually when he’s at an awards show, Jelly Roll absolutely steals the spotlight, delivering gritty, astonishing vocals and smart, simple staging that knocks your socks off. So maybe the problem with this performance was simply that Jelly Roll and Post Malone were not actually at the show. Beamed in from an arena in Hanover, Germany, this duet on “Losers” sounded fine but just couldn’t complete with magic you get from an in-venue awards show performance. That being said, another VMA performer who did an offsite show at this year’s ceremony absolutely smashed it (more on that later). But that artist’s outlandish theatricality goes a long way toward making up for the distance; while Posty and Jelly have chemistry, this duet unfortunately faded into the background. Socks were not, in fact, knocked off.

  • Alex Warren

Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” is a certified smash, a Billboard Hot 100 topper and 2025’s song of the summer. But a ballad, no matter how powerful, is a tough proposition at an awards show, and his new single, “Eternity,” didn’t exactly set up this two-song medley to soar. When he brought out the choir for “Ordinary,” his impassioned vocals (and the audience’s enthusiasm) helped right the ship a bit. Even so, with the forest glen staging and the smiling choir singers wearing all-white outfits, the whole thing was giving a bit of “for those suffering from moderate to severe psoriasis” advertisement energy.

  • J Balvin, Justin Quiles, Lenny Tavárez and DJ Snake

Certainly the night’s most colorful performance came via J Balvin, who brought a widescreen neon vision of boom boxes and palm trees to the VMAs. Justin Quiles and Lenny Tavárez joined him for recent track “Zun Zun,” before DJ Snake took over, dropping the beat for his Balvin collab “Noventa,” a thumping reggaetón track complete with dancers, a bodega storefront and gigantic shoes.

  • Conan Gray

Conan Gray gave the VMAs a queer Sleeping Beauty/Romeo & Juliet fantasia, belting his lovely, emotional “Vodka Cranberry” while draped in princely, velvety robes (and sporting some seriously luscious locks). The fairytale production was sumptuous, the fatalistic ending was romantically theatrical, and that high note he hit toward the end? Pro-level.

  • Mariah Carey

As Mariah Carey pointed out in her acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award, this year marked her first-ever VMA win (for best R&B). “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?” she asked. Well, MTV’s tardiness to honor the icon was our gain, as it was a delight to watch the elusive chanteuse take a trip down memory lane during her medley, trotting out her evil alter ego Bianca (and roller-skating dancers) for “Heartbreaker,” bringing in a string section for “We Belong Together” and touching front-row fans during “It’s Like That.” Plus, new single “Sugar Sweet” sounded great, making us even more excited for upcoming LP Here For It All (Sept. 26).

  • Ricky Martin

Prior to accepting the inaugural Latin Icon Award, Ricky Martin delivered a sizzling medley of bilingual hits, opening with his 1999 smash “Livin’ La Vida Loca” before hitting “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” “The Cup of Life” and more. His voice is a bit deeper and fuller than back in the ‘90s, but that’s not a bad thing – one thing that hasn’t changed, however, is Martin’s tireless energy and his dynamite dance moves. He’s still got it, and then some.

  • Busta Rhymes

Rapping with a speed and intensity that puts rappers half his age to shame, Busta Rhymes brought fire to the VMAs stage – not to mention GloRilla, Papoose, Spliff Star and Joyner Lucas. Ripping through “Touch It,” “Gimme Some More” and “Pass the Courvoisier,” Rhymes reminded viewers he’s one of New York’s finest. You might point out, hey, didn’t Busta do a career-spanning medley at the VMAs not that long ago? And yes, he did one of those in 2021, too. But when a performance is this strong, who cares?

  • Sombr

Sombr, whose debut studio album I Barely Know Her dropped last month, brought some ‘00s New York City dive-bar vibes to the VMAs – which is kinda funny, consider he was born in NYC in 2005. Whether singing in a photobooth or letting a dancer gratuitously lick his chest, Sombr maintained a cool insouciance in his demeanor while wailing through romantic pain on “back to friends” or bringing the indie-dance party on  “12 to 12.” It was his first awards show performance ever, and it certainly will not be his last.

  • Doja Cat

A Max Headroom reference? A checkered floor drenched in pink light? A keytar? Kenny G?! What more do you want! With the sax titan in tow, Doja Cat brought fabulously weird dance moves and an ‘80s visual extravaganza to “Jealous Type,” the evening’s first performance. It was a delightfully retro way to kick off the night that nevertheless felt electric, exciting and fresh.

  • Yungblud, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry & Nuno Bettencourt

When The Osbournes debuted on MTV in 2002, it was a mutual win, with the reality show catapulting Ozzy Osbourne back into the spotlight and the Prince of Darkness gifting the network with a ratings juggernaut that would prove fateful for its transition to reality programming. So it was fitting that the Black Sabbath frontman got a sendoff from the network’s signature awards show — and while Yungblud probably wasn’t the first (or even third) name you’d think of for an Ozzy tribute, the English rocker (with Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt on guitar!) absolutely killed it. He nailed the “Crazy Train” wail, cackle and prowled around the stage with the energy of a wild cat and a kid whose wildest dream is coming true. Truthfully, he out-sang the Ozzman on “Changes,” and teed up Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry to take it home, literally, on a heartfelt, bluesy “Mama, I’m Coming Home.” A knockout.

  • Lady Gaga

Typically at awards shows, the performances that sag the most are the ones beamed in via satellite or pre-recorded. But Lady Gaga is seemingly immune to what’s typical. Somehow, she turned in a pre-recorded VMAs set (filmed during her recent run at Madison Square Garden) and managed to make one of the biggest splashes of the night. Those who have caught the Mayhem Ball IRL had already seen her “Abracadabra” staging – with the massive dress hoop opening to revealed a cage of dancers – but it’s so maniacally marvelous that seeing it a second time, even on a TV screen, was still a thrill. Plus, the live debut of “The Dead Dance” that followed breathed a huge, gothy gust of life into the VMAs – quite the feat for an artist who wasn’t even there at the time.

  • Sabrina Carpenter

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but when Sabrina Carpenter emerges from a manhole during a song, there’s a joke in there. Sab might be a newcomer to global stardom, but as she joked during her VMA speech, she’s no newcomer to making albums. The years under her belt have served her well: she brings not just an ineffable aura and presence to the stage, but a vision. Her rain-drenched performance of “Tears” on a set dressed-up to look like NYC streets was not only a visual treat, but a much-needed political statement for trans rights during a time when many so-called allies are either strangely quiet or walking back their previous support. Trans, nonbinary and drag performers (including Drag Race alumni Willam and Laganja Estranja and ballroom veteran Honey Balenciaga) joined her on stage, rocking picket signs (“Dolls! Dolls Dolls!” and “In Trans We Trust”) and bringing that defiant, celebratory energy that LGBTQ people do better than anyone. And when a downpour from above drenched Carpenter while she sang the line “I get wet at the thought of you,” it was that kind of sly, winking entendre that she does better than anyone.

  • Tate McRae

Even more than the Grammys, the VMAs are the proving ground for pop princesses to demonstrate their mettle — and at the 2025 ceremony, Tate McRae muscled her way to the top. Surrounded by a coterie of oiled-up muscle men in underwear, McRae pulled out some mind-boggling dance moves while revving “Sports Car” into the fast lane after spinning through “Revolving Door.” Whether writhing around in the sand, giving sultry looks to the camera or doing an onstage back bend, McRae made it clear that she doesn’t just deserve the stage – when she’s there, she owns it.

VMAs 2025 Review: The VMAs Are Back

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Are the VMAs back? Or was MTV simply pandering to my millennial sensibilities at the 2025 VMAs?

There had to be someone at MTV whispering “do it for the 30-somethings” into the ears of the producers. Or maybe the millennials are in charge now. Whatever—all I know is that when I saw the stars arriving on the red carpet at the UBS Arena on September 7, I felt as though I’d tripped, hit my head, and woken up in the year 2009. The guest list was littered with early ’00s pop culture royalty—Ciara, Ricky Martin, the Simpsons (sisters Ashlee and Jessica), the Hiltons (sisters Paris and Nicky), Brittany Snow, Taylor Momsen, Mike “the Situation” Sorrentino, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, and many, many more.

Of course, stoking our collective nostalgia for views is nothing new to the awards show. That’s basically the reason for the Video Vanguard Award, which is given each year to an artist for lifetime achievement.

In addition to the Vanguard Award, which was presented to Mariah Carey this year (rumor has it she’s still slowly shuffling off the stage. Take all the time you need, queen!), MTV bestowed its first ever Latin Icon Award to Ricky Martin, who, I’m happy to report, has absolutely still got it. Fans got an extra hit of that sweet, sweet nostalgia when Jessica Simpson presented him with the award and reminded the audience that, back in 1999, she opened for him on his Livin’ La Vida Loca tour.

The Best Moments From the 2025 VMAs

The 2025 MTV VMAs took place Sunday night, bringing with them a chance to lock in on the buzziest names in music right now—namely, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Rosé, Jelly Roll (…sure, why not?), and, of course, Mariah Carey.

But what were the standout moments of the night? We’re glad you asked. Here, a round-up of the five most memorable performances, speeches, and special appearances from the 2025 MTV VMAs.

Sabrina Carpenter’s timely tribute to trans rights

With Man’s Best Friend, Carpenter currently has the number-one album in the country. She made the most of her spotlight at the MTV VMAs on Sunday by performing her new song “Tears” for the first time, surrounded by drag queens holding signs that read, among other things, “Dolls Dolls Dolls” and “In Trans We Trust.” As the Trump administration ramps up its needless attacks on trans people, it’s nice to see Carpenter speak up for an oft-maligned community—without whom pop music as we know it simply wouldn’t exist. Plus, that Britney homage didn’t hurt either!

Sabrina Carpenter advocates for trans rights during MTV VMAs performance: “In trans we trust”

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Sabrina Carpenter turned the 2025 MTV VMAs into a huge dance party with her ‘Tears’ performance, which also saw her celebrate and advocate for trans and LGBTQ+ rights – watch the full performance below.

The 2025 MTV VMAs took place last night (September 7) at the UBS Arena in Long Island. A highly anticipated moment of the entire awards show was Sabrina Carpenter’s performance, which lived up to fans’ expectations.

For her performance, she played ‘Tears’, taken off her latest album ‘Man’s Best Friend’. The performance saw the singer appear from underneath a manhole cover to join a slew of drag and trans performers and other dancers onstage.

Throughout the performance, dancers in the background held up hand-drawn signs that read “Protect Trans Rights”, “In Trans We Trust”, “Support Local Drag”, “Love Each Other” and “If You Hate You’ll Never Get Laid” among others. Later on, Carpenter ditched her shimmery top for a dance break that saw sprinklers rain down on her and her dancers, a la Flashdance.

Watch the full performance below.

Elsewhere at the VMAS, Sabrina Carpenter also won Album Of The Year for last year’s ‘Short N’ Sweet’, Pop Artist and Best Visual Effects for her ‘Manchild’ music video. During her acceptance speech for Album Of The Year’, Carpenter doubled down on her support for the queer community, thanking her “queens on stage”.

“This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity,” she said in her speech. “So to get to be part of something that can bring light, make you smile, make you dance, and make you feel like the world is your fucking oyster. I’m so grateful to do that.”

As for her new album ‘Man’s Best Friend’, that record scored a four-star review from Nick Levine for NME: “Given Carpenter’s fondness for even a dodgy double entendre, it feels fitting to end on one. With ‘Man’s Best Friend’, she’s done more than enough to keep herself on top.”

Elsewhere at the 2025 MTV VMAs, Ariana Grande took home the night’s biggest award, Video Of The Year’ for ‘Brighter Days Ahead’, while Lady Gaga was crowned Artist Of The Year, Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song Of The Year for ‘APT.’ and Mariah Carey was awarded the Video Vanguard award for her historic career. Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a touching performance. Check out the full list of winners here.

Sombr Makes MTV VMAs Debut With ‘Back to Friends’ and ’12 to 12′

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

The 20-year-old musician continued his breakout year with a medley featuring “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12”

Sombr is only looking ahead with his debut performance on the MTV Video Music Awards main stage. The 20-year-old musician added more fuel to the fire of his breakout year with a medley featuring the hit single “Back to Friends” and the standout record “12 to 12.”

Sombr’s set started off in a photo booth, where he emerged with the opening lines of “Back to Friends.” As the song progressed, he worked his way over to a performance stage with NYC club posters plastered across the walls as his band played on. Then it was time to really get the party started. “This one’s for the girls that get it,” Sombr announced before launching into “12 to 12.” His dancers made out under disco ball lights while he partied with a bunch of girls. Whatever sadness lingered from his heartbroken opening song was gone by the time he reached the “12 to 12” bridge.

Sombr also received his first VMAs nominations at this year’s show. The singer-songwriter was up for Best New Artist against Ella Langley, Gigi Perez, Lola Young, Alex Warren, and the Marías. He took home the award for Best Alternative for “Back to Friends,” while “12 to 12” appeared as a contender for Song of the Summer but lost out to Tate McRae.

“It’s hard to step back and be like, ‘Wow, this is amazing’ when everything is happening so fast, but it is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” he told MTV about his quick rise when he was named MTV’s Global Push Artist for September. “Being able to meet all these people, go to all these countries, and see all these new faces and beautiful people who connect with my music — it’s all I ever wanted to do in my life, so it’s the best thing ever.”
