Director Milap Zaveri has finally cleared the air on the rumours surrounding Ajay Devgn’s alleged cameo in Mastiii 4. Over the past few days, social media was abuzz after a reports claiming that Ajay would be returning to the Masti franchise after almost two decades.

However, Zaveri has now set the record straight, confirming that there is no truth to these reports. The filmmaker clarified that while he deeply respects Ajay Devgn, the actor is not part of Mastiii 4 in any capacity. “Ajay sir is not in the film,” Zaveri stated, putting an end to all the speculations. The much-awaited film continues to feature the original comedy trio Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani, and Vivek Oberoi reprising their iconic roles as Amar, Meet, and Prem.

The film also stars Ruhii Singh, Shreya Sharma, Elnaaz Norouzi, Natalia Janoszek, Shaad Randhawa, and Nishant Singh Malkani, with Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, and Nargis Fakhri joining the madness. Vivek Agnihotri’s latest political drama, The Bengal Files, has outperformed his 2019 film The Tashkent Files at the box office but still lags significantly behind the phenomenal success of The Kashmir Files (2022).

Modest Opening Weekend for The Bengal Files

The Bengal Files earned ₹2.75 crore on Sunday, following ₹2.15 crore on Saturday and ₹1.75 crore on Friday. According to Sacnilk, the film’s total opening weekend collection in India stands at ₹6.65 crore. While this is nearly three times the ₹2.20 crore that The Tashkent Files earned during its opening weekend, it is only about one-fourth of the ₹27.15 crore that The Kashmir Files raked in.

Comparing Agnihotri’s Political Trilogy

The Tashkent Files, a pre-pandemic outing on the death of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri under mysterious circumstances, featured Mithun Chakraborty, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Tripathi. At the other end, The Kashmir Files, based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, was a box office hit, with a ₹3.55 crore opening and rising to ₹15 crore by day three.

Comparatively, The Bengal Files also had a subdued beginning despite the impressive cast that boasts of Mithun Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi. The movie deals with the Direct Action Day of 1946, Noakhali Massacre, and the “Great Bengal Killing” and compares them to contemporary problems in Bengal and Bangladesh.

Heavy Investment and Stiff Competition

Agnihotri has disclosed that he invested the returns of The Kashmir Files into The Bengal Files, in addition to borrowed money. In the meantime, his last release, The Vaccine War, launched on ₹3.50 crore and concluded on ₹10.33 crore.

The movie also encountered stiff competition this weekend from Baaghi 4 featuring Tiger Shroff and Sanjay Dutt, which debuted at a record ₹31.25 crore.

Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files hit theatres this Friday and has already sparked a lot of discussion. Despite facing controversies and strong competition at the box office, the film showed growth on its second day, which was Saturday.

As per a trade website, the film earned Rs 2.25 crore net on Saturday in India. This brings its total two-day collection to Rs 4 crore. The Hindi occupancy on Saturday stood at 29.91%. The film saw 15.11% occupancy in the morning, 29.20% in the afternoon, 35.08% in the evening, and peaked at 40.23% during night shows.

This new release is part of the director’s trilogy and dives deep into a difficult chapter in Indian history. The story highlights the universal fight for human dignity and the basic right to live. The Bengal Files Twitter review: Vivek Agnihotri’s latest film, The Bengal Files, has sparked a powerful wave of reactions on Twitter. A section of the audience is calling it one of the hardest-hitting cinematic experiences of 2025. But there are others who seem to be dismissing it as hollow and biased. Another viewer echoed the sentiment. “TheBengalFiles is another outstanding film by director #VivekRanjanAgnihotri after #TheKashmirFiles. Superb writing, performances and heartwrenching film for the Indians,” wrote the user.

Praise for performances

The film is being praised for its storytelling that exposes dark truths that have been left out of mainstream history books. “We were never taught this in school. Watching it made me realise how naïve we are as a society—ready to destroy our own for foreign ideologies,” read one post.

The performances also garnered widespread acclaim. Simrat Kaur, who plays Bharathi Banerjee, was singled out for delivering the “performance of a lifetime,” while Namashi Chakraborty, Mithun Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi were lauded for their impactful roles.

Some call it propaganda

But there were many who did not like the film, calling it biased, labelling it propaganda. “The Bengal Files mixes history with drama. Direct Action Day was complex, affecting multiple communities. Dramatizing real figures one-sidedly risks misleading viewers, fictionalizing events, and turning history into political propaganda, need more reasons?” wrote one on Twitter. Another added, “The Kashmir Files & Bengal Files are based on pure religious and hate propaganda.”

The Bengal Files controversy

The controversy erupted ahead of its release, especially in West Bengal, when Agnihotri claimed that theatres were refusing to screen the film, allegedly due to political pressure. Producer and actor Pallavi Joshi even wrote an open letter to the President of India, claiming an “unofficial ban” in the state, despite there being no formal censor board objections.

The Bengal Files features an ensemble cast led by Mithun Chakraborty alongside Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi, who also produced the film. Darshan Kumarr and Simrat Kaur play key roles. The cast also includes Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Eklavya revealed how Lord Ganesha’s blessings at Lalbaugcha Raja came into his life when he was at one of his lowest points. After years of auditions, pitching scripts, and acting in small projects, he was questioning whether he was truly meant for the industry.

Eklavya’s Caption

His post read, “Last year, I was ready to give up… and then Bappa gave me The Bengal Files. Around this time, I was at one of the lowest points of my life. My thoughts were scattered, and I had started questioning if I was really meant for the film industry. I loved acting and screenwriting more than anything, but after 7–8 years of waiting, I was on the verge of letting go of the dream. I had done decent work — made a feature film, acted in a bit of web series, auditioned countless times, pitched scripts to producers — yet nothing seemed to click. It was during the Ganpati festivities at Lalbaugcha Raja that I prayed to Bappa for direction, for just a sign to keep going. And my oh my, didn’t he answer! Three days later, I signed one of the biggest projects of my life — The Bengal Files with @vivekagnihotri sir. It’s all thanks to Bappa. With the film releasing tomorrow, I had to visit him again to seek his blessings for its success. Thank you, Bappa. Love you.”

Adding further, Eklavya reflected, “My film The Bengal Files is releasing tomorrow. Last year, I had come here and prayed, and just 3–4 days later, I got this film. I think it’s a full circle.”

This year, keeping up with the faith that turned his life around, Eklavya once again visited Lalbaugcha Raja ahead of the release. For him, the ritual was not just about tradition but about gratitude. It is an acknowledgement that his breakthrough came at a time when he needed it the most.
