A few months back, Vicky Kaushal was the talk of the town among the audience after his impressive performance in Chhaava. The audience praised his acting skills in a historical action drama, and the movie went on to become a major box office blockbuster. Over the years, Vicky has seamlessly transitioned between intense, emotional, and light-hearted roles, proving his unmatched range. Here’s a look at five of his finest performances that truly highlight his versatility as an actor.

1. Iqbal – Raazi

  • IMDb Rating: 7.7/10
  • Director: Meghna Gulzar
  • Streaming On: Apple TV

Vicky Kaushal‘s performance in Raazi is regarded as one of his finest. The film was released on May 11, 2018, and performed well at the box office. In Raazi, Vicky Kaushal played the role of Iqbal Syed, a member of a Pakistani army officer’s family. Throughout the entire film, the reactions and emotions Vicky portrayed truly demonstrated that he can portray unique roles and switch between antagonist & protagonist very smoothly.

2. Sam Manekshaw – Sam Bahadur

  • IMDb Rating: 7.7/10
  • Director: Meghna Gulzar
  • Streaming On: Zee5

In Sam Bahadur, Vicky Kaushal not only cosplayed the role of Sam Manekshaw but actually lived it. The portrayal of the army officer was so perfect and realistic. Not only the dialogue delivery, but also the accent he adopted, is proof that he is a versatile actor who can impress the audience with such sensitive roles.

3. Sukhi – Dunki

  • IMDb Rating: 6.5/10
  • Director: Rajkumar Hirani
  • Streaming On: Netflix

Dunki was released in 2023 and had stiff competition with Salaar in theaters. Despite having Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, Vicky Kaushal’s cameo presence as Sukhi shone brightly. Vicky was not part of the entire film, and his character was sacrificed in the early stage of the movie. However, his character left a long-lasting impact on the audience, especially due to the innocence and genuine emotions he portrayed as an actor.

One of the turning points in Vicky Kaushal’s career was the film URI: The Surgical Strike. The movie was not only loved by the viewers, but it also gave Vicky the acting fame that he truly deserves. Vicky’s role as Major Vihan Singh Shergill in the URI is clear proof that he is a versatile actor. His high-intensity acting in the role of the Major is something which is commendable.

Chhaava is the latest film from Vicky Kausahl, and he depicted the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The Maddocks’ film was not only a major blockbuster at the box office, but Kaushal’s acting became a wide talking point among the audience. He not only transformed his body for this role but also utilized all his skill sets to provide the best possible depiction of Sambhaji Maharaj.

Los Cinco Cardones’ Debut Shows Their Versatility » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The title track of Los Cinco Cardones’ debut, El Quinto Cardón, sits just about at the album’s center. It’s a spellbinding ten minutes of desert-tinged jazz, keys lifting like a midnight wind, guitar echoing over open sand, bass rolling along on a high-speed night drive, sax soaring into a cloudless midnight. That is both the record’s heart and its pinnacle: the quartet performing not just a piece but a cohesive landscape, breathtaking and dreamlike. Here is where the band move with the tightest fit, everything glowing, everyone creating. It is outstanding.

I start my review five tracks in, not because “El Quinto Cardón” is representative of the rest of the album–no two of its tracks are alike enough for such a claim–but because I can’t stop listening to it in all its lengthy, evocative glory. Part of me thinks I would like an entire album of this song.

A wiser part of me, though, knows that what makes this piece so mesmerizing is that it arrives amid a very eclectic mix. Each of the eight tracks of El Quinto Cardón has its own feel, profoundly so. El Quinto Cardón opens with the straight-ahead grooves of “El Baile De Los Cardones”, a warm introduction to the group on which each member gets at least a moment in the spotlight: bandleader Sebastian Maschat on drums, Sebastian Dimarco on bass, Diego Sole on guitars, and Howard Clifton on sax and keys. “Afresque” picks up the pace with broad Afrobeat references, giving Clifton a chance to loosely emulate Fela with swinging brass.

The band skip into unexpected meters on “Clowns are the Real Magicians”, in which Clifton’s lilting keys are crucial in delivering on the whimsy promised in the title, as are subtle horn squeaks at the end. There’s an esoteric flair to “Ode to Being Weightless”, in which Clifton sings over retro, agile riffs. After monumental “El Quinto Cardón” is a trio of more fast-paced numbers: melodica-infused “Peyotito”, guitar-driven and progressive-tinged “Sheep of My Parrish”, and quirky Afrobeat-meets-fast march “Afrencera En Onze Típico”.

It’s hard to imagine getting bored at a Los Cinco Cardones gig. El Quinto Cardón is an impressive show of the group’s range, and their musicianship throughout is unquestionable. It’s a promising sampler, well-balanced between freedom and structure. The diversity of the band’s repertoire is intriguing, if sometimes hard to parse as a single record. Simply put, a lot is going on. Even so, the band hit marvelous heights, and there are moments here that are truly exhilarating and well worth the time spent listening.

Los Cinco Cardones don’t necessarily need to pare down their stylistic field, to be sure. There is much to be said for how wide a net is cast on El Quinto Cardón. Each member does exceptional work with complex meters and thoughtful melodies. Would they be better off sticking to a single mood for a single album? Maybe the focus would make it easier for me to stop listening to one track over and over.

Then again, maybe the group know better than to try to reuse textures they’ve already put to good use. Whatever their strategy, I look forward to the quartet’s next directions, however many there are and however far they go before making yet more turns.

7 Alia Bhatt Movies That Prove Her Versatility

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

What sets a truly remarkable actor apart isn’t just a string of successful films, but the ability to try on different personalities and to completely step out of their comfort zone and make you believe they are that character. Alia Bhatt, who burst onto the scene with a glamorous, typical Bollywood debut, has in the years since carved out a space for herself as one of the most versatile and fearless actresses of her generation. She hasn’t been afraid to let go of the star image, picking roles that are varied, emotional, or totally unexpected. From an abuse survivor finding her voice on a highway, to a powerful leader from Kamathipura leading a movement, her filmography proves her versatility. Here are 7 films that prove her acting range.

Highway (2014)

This was the movie that truly showed us what Alia could do beyond the typical bubbly heroine roles. The film is about Veera Tripathi, a rich young girl who gets kidnapped right before her wedding. What’s unexpected is that she starts finding a strange sense of freedom and safety with her kidnapper on the long road trip through the beautiful Indian landscape. It’s a story about breaking free from the suffocating pressure of a privileged but abusive life. The open road becomes her escape route from a life that felt like a cage.

Her portrayal of Veera was raw and completely natural. She didn’t act like a movie star; she simply was the character. You see her transition from a trapped, scared girl to someone who finds her own voice and finally addresses her childhood trauma. It wasn’t a loud, over-the-top performance, it was authentic and deeply felt by her. The way she showed vulnerability, confusion, and joy all at once, made you truly connect with her character’s journey. That moment where she finally confronts her family at the end stayed with the audience and is lauded to this date.

Udta Punjab (2016)

Alia Bhatt

A hard-hitting and intense look at the drug crisis in Punjab, the film tells the stories of four people affected by the problem. Alia played a Bihari migrant worker, known as Bauria, who is trapped in the drug trade and faces horrific abuse. Her character portrayed the forgotten victims of the crisis. She was a girl with a simple dream of playing hockey, whose life is completely messed up by the state’s issues.

Dear Zindagi (2016)

Alia Bhatt

This movie tells the story of Kaira, a young, ambitious cinematographer in Mumbai who appears confident but struggles with mental health issues, abandonment fears, and a general inability to form lasting relationships. She seeks help from a therapist, Dr. Jehangir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), and the film beautifully shows her journey toward healing and accepting her own flaws. What made this performance stand out was its relatability. Alia brought an authenticity to Kaira. She captured the feeling of being a young adult who seems to “have it all” but is quietly falling apart inside. Her portrayal of anxiety, defensive behaviour, and the slow, reluctant opening up to her therapist felt honest and personal, showing her acting chops very well.

Raazi (2018)

Alia Bhatt

Based on a true story, Raazi is a spy thriller set during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Alia plays Sehmat Khan, a young and innocent Kashmiri college student who is quickly trained and married into a Pakistani military family to serve as an Indian intelligence agent. Her mission is to gather important information for her country, often putting her at extreme personal risk while maintaining her cover. Alia convincingly played two different sides of Sehmat: the gentle, loving wife and daughter, and the clever spy who had to think on her feet. The maturity she showed in playing such an emotionally complex character was truly remarkable, making every choice Sehmat made feel heavy and real.

Gully Boy (2019)

Alia Bhatt

This film focuses on the life of Murad, an aspiring street rapper from the slums of Dharavi. Alia played Safeena Firdausi, Murad’s bold, immensely protective, and slightly possessive girlfriend. Though not the central focus, Safeena was an important and unforgettable part of Murad’s world. Safeena was a fireball, and Alia played her with flair and perfect comic timing. She perfectly balanced the character’s traditional upbringing with her modern, aggressive confidence.

Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)

Alia Bhatt

This film tells the story of Gangubai, a young woman who is tricked and sold into prostitution but rises against all odds to become a powerful, respected figure of Kamathipura, Bombay’s red-light area in the 1960s. She transforms into a fiery advocate for the rights and dignity of sex workers. This was arguably her most challenging and transformative role yet, especially considering her age. Alia took on a character that was much older and required a completely different, powerful personality. She had to show strength, vulnerability, and a commanding presence all at once. Her voice, her walk, and the mannerisms was something that she carried very well. She successfully carried the entire film on her shoulders, portraying Gangubai’s journey from a terrified girl named Ganga to the fearless Gangubai especially in the long, theatrical speeches. This performance showed her ability to handle a huge, larger-than-life epic role.

Darlings (2022)

Alia Bhatt

Darlings is a dark comedy that addresses the serious issue of domestic abuse in a completely fresh and unique way. Alia plays Badru, a simple, young woman who is madly in love with her husband, despite his continuous physical and emotional abuse. The film’s plot deepens when Badru decides to fight back, with the help of her mother. As a producer on this film, it clearly meant a lot to her, and it showed in her performance. She very well balanced the two sides of Badru: the hopeful, naive wife desperate for her husband’s love and the clever woman planning her revenge. Her acting was superb in the way she moved from moments of pain and confusion to flashes of dark, comedic mischief when she imprisons her husband. She kept the character grounded and believable, allowing the audience to empathize with her situation.
