Renowned Bollywood fashion designer Manish Malhotra is preparing to make his debut as a producer. He shared this exciting news on his social media on August 24. The movie, titled Gustaakh Ishq, has released its teaser today, which gives a sense of classic, retro, and romantic charm.

The poster, which was also released today, shows Naseeruddin Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Vijay Varma. Vijay and Fatima are depicted gazing lovingly at each other, while Naseeruddin Shah is seen smiling and holding a cat. The teaser certainly gives a strong sense of retro romance, and the overall setup presents a proper vintage aesthetic. Also, the background song, Uljalool Ishq, seems to represent a form of irrational or obsessive love.

The film will be produced under Manish Malhotra’s production banner, Stage5 Production. Set in the by-lanes of Old Delhi and the fading vintage houses of Punjab, Gustaakh Ishq is a love story of passion and unspoken desire, drawing from a world where architecture holds memory and music carries longing.

The film is directed by Vibhu Puri, with music by Vishal Bhardwaj, lyrics by Gulzar, sound by Resul Pookutty, and cinematography by Manush Nandan. It features a cast ranging from the veteran Naseeruddin Shah to the talented Vijay Varma, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sharib Hashmi.

Regarding his foray into Bollywood as a producer, Manish Malhotra said, “My passion for cinema originated during my childhood. The silver screen served as my portal to the world, and observing the colours, attire, music, and lifestyles presented in cinema halls profoundly influenced my imagination and motivated me to pursue a career as a designer. Now, venturing into film production feels like my way of expressing gratitude to the medium that has given me so much. With Stage5 Production, the path forward involves embracing the unforeseen, through narratives, genres, and films that continue to both surprise and inspire.”

Co-produced with his brother Dinesh Malhotra, Gustaakh Ishq represents a fresh endeavour for Manish Malhotra, one that both honours the style of traditional storytelling and embraces the evolution of Indian cinema. The film is slated to be released in November 2025.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has issued a strong note on a section of social media that called him a ‘dog hater’ after he backed the decision of the Supreme Court to move all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters within eight weeks. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), RGV said that the stray dog menace has gone too far to be ignored and the solutions need to strike a ‘balance’ of compassion with practicality.

In his note, Ram Gopal Varma wrote, “To all those DUMB DOG LOVERS out there, who think I am a DOG HATER, I say this. Are you so blind, deaf and brain-dead that you can’t see children being bitten, mauled and killed on CCTV videos all over the place? Can’t you f…ing read the official reports on exploding rabies cases? It is common sense that in any emergency—fire, flood, riots, etc, you first deal with the immediate dangers, before holding debates on the root causes and long-term solutions…. The Supreme Court order is not some abstract policy note, but it is a blunt acknowledgement that the stray dog menace has gone extremely too far and human lives have to be saved on a priority level.”

‘Tell the dog lovers to take stray dogs’

He went on to add that there are several dog lovers who treat the dog bites as ‘love bites’. He said, “Coming to adoption, the dog lovers who cry hoarse about compassion are the same people buying foreign breeds to keep them in luxury houses which are well looked after by expensive vets. Just try to tell the dog lovers to take stray dogs in exchange for their pedigree breeds…While feeding, many dog lovers get bitten themselves but don’t report it, treating it as a “love bite.” But rabies spreads silently through these uncontrolled packs, endangering the entire neighbourhood.”

He continued that the stray dog problem in India is real and that to combat this issue, the solutions must balance compassion with practicality, which will depend on both the existing infrastructure and local attitudes.

On August 11, a bench of Justices Pardiwala and R Mahadevan took a stern view of the stray dog problem and ordered the Delhi-NCR to start removing stray dogs from all localities and house them in dedicated dog shelters to be set up by civic authorities. In the last few days, multiple protests have been held in the city over the past few days, demanding that the SC’s order be withdrawn.
