“On the rise To the world.” This is going to be massive! At a special presentation in the city of Hyderabad, India, beloved Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli revealed a vivid first look his next new movie – officially titled Varanasi. The project had originally been known by its codename Globetrotter, before the final reveal at this major event featuring largest outdoor projection screen in India to hint at it being made for IMAX. Along with the name, Rajamouli debuted this 3 min first look promo. There is one shot real of mega famous Telugu actor Mahesh Babu riding a bull, carrying a trident for a weapon. The rest of it is just epic concept art. Plot details are sparse so far, however Babu’s character Rudhra been described as an “Indiana Jones-style archeologist on a globetrotting search for ancient artifacts.” This trailer reveals a grand “time-travel adventure” inspired by Hindu mythology – and the title is a reference to an actual city important to Hinduism. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime project,” Babu stated. “I will make everyone proud.” The cast includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas along with Prithviraj Sukumaran as the main villain sitting a wheelchair with Doc-Ock robo arms. Prithviraj Sukumaran also teased that working with SS Rajamouli has been a dream for him, and thanked him for the ‘torturous shooting process’ in Varanasi.

Earlier this month, filmmaker SS Rajamouli thrilled fans by unveiling the first look of Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, the formidable antagonist in his upcoming film Varanasi. Prithviraj was present at the Globe Trotter event in Hyderabad where he spoke at length about his collaboration with Rajamouli and said that his role in the film is ‘physically and emotionally exhausting’. What Prithviraj said

Talking on stage at the event, the actor shared, “I still have that message when I was in the middle of directing my own film, when Rajamouli sir said that for my next film, the part of the antagonist has been written, and it has come out very well. Would you like to be a part of it? I always wanted to work with him and he offered me Kumbha. Little did I know that he was going to trust me with one of the most complex, most physically and emotionally challenging characters he has thought of.”

‘SS Rajamouli pushing his extremes’

He then added, “Thank you sir for the most torturous shooting process in Varanasi. I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is SS Rajamouli taking Indian cinema to the world, at his most audacious. The scale, the vision, the ambition, it’s SS Rajamouli pushing his extremes to places never seen before.”

In reponse, Rajamouli joked: “Enda mashe, adipoli (What sir, fantastic)!”

Mahesh Babu headlines the film as Kumbha, with Priyanka Chopra playing Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran playing the antagonist. The story follows an adventurous, globe-trotting hero who confronts powerful adversaries while navigating perilous missions across various countries. The film is touted to hit screens in 2027.

The wait is finally over. SS Rajamouli has officially revealed the title of his next big-screen adventure starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, which had been referred to as GlobeTrotter during production, is now confirmed to be titled Varanasi. The announcement was made during a grand celebration held at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where thousands of fans gathered to witness the moment live.
Just hours before the event, Rajamouli shared a message hinting at a major reveal. He wrote, “The title of the film will be revealed along with a visual to the world… Once it airs on the big screen at the #GlobeTrotter event, we will make it live online.” This immediately sparked excitement among fans who were eager to see what the filmmaker had planned.

During the event, Rajamouli introduced Mahesh Babu’s character, Rudhra, through an epic poster that received roaring applause. Created by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh, Mirzapur: The Film is scheduled for release in 2026. The movie will feature the iconic characters from the series, including Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal), and Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu), along with Abhishek Banerjee. Following its nationwide theatrical release, the film will be available for streaming to Prime members in India and in over 240 countries and territories eight weeks after its release.
