Netflix Expands Creative Asia Program, Unveils New Initiatives

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Netflix unveiled an expanded slate of creative development initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region during its Creative Asia conference at the Busan International Film Festival, with executives highlighting the company’s commitment to nurturing local talent and improving production standards.

Speaking at the conference, Karen Park, BIFF program director, emphasized the shifting landscape for Asian cinema. “Asian creativity has always been there — it just wasn’t being seen,” Park said. “Now, thanks to global platforms and shifting attitudes, that’s finally changing. The Busan International Film Festival has become a massive stage for showcasing Asian cinema to the world.”

Park credited Netflix’s global reach with breaking down cultural barriers, noting that “now that everyone is watching ‘Squid Game,’ subtitles aren’t scary any more.” She added that the shift represents more than just consumption: “People are starting to see Asian stories as complex, emotional, not ‘oriental’, not ‘exotic’, but universal human stories.”

Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s APAC VP of content (ex-India), outlined the company’s partnership philosophy. “Authenticity isn’t a formula – it’s founded in relationships,” Kim said. “The only way to achieve that is to work with local creators, local talent, and a wide variety of the best local production partners.” Since beginning local productions nearly a decade ago, Netflix has partnered with over 250 local production partners across the APAC region.

The company unveiled several new and expanding initiatives. In Australia, Netflix is launching Lumina, a program providing neurodiverse individuals with pathways into the visual effects industry through partnership with Bus Stop Films. Participants will receive training and on-set work placement on the upcoming local production “My Brilliant Career.”

Creative Asia itself is expanding to the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Indonesia this December, connecting emerging Southeast Asian creators with masterclasses and networking opportunities.

Netflix’s regional training programs have shown significant impact. The company’s VFX Academy in Korea, now in its fifth iteration, has trained more than 330 students over 2.5 years, with 70% securing industry jobs through partnerships with studios including Eyeline Studios, Westworld, VA Corp, Dexter Studios, and Gulliver Studios.

Other ongoing initiatives include the Reel Life program in Southeast Asia, which recently concluded its third annual event in Bangkok with 100 participants, and on-the-job training programs in Taiwan for emerging writers and production professionals working on Netflix Originals projects.

Sung Q Lee, Netflix’s APAC head of roduction, underscored the company’s focus on improving working conditions. “Our mission isn’t simply to comply with local standards, but to help set new ones,” Lee said. “We also want production teams to have access to the best skills training, so they can use the latest technology or forge new career paths in jobs that have never existed in their countries before.”

A production panel featuring Yongsu Lee (producer, Korea), Chartchai “Nat” Ketnust (CEO of Whitelight, Thailand), and Momoko Nishiyama (intimacy coordinator, Japan) highlighted evolving industry practices. Lee, who is producing the upcoming Netflix series “Can This Love Be Translated?”, described implementing daily crew briefings to maintain safety standards across international locations.

Nishiyama noted the growing acceptance of intimacy coordinators in Japan, a role that emerged only five years ago. “People on set feel safer, more empowered to speak up, and there’s much more open discussion,” she said. “Netflix brings in separate experts for things like mental health, harassment, and respect training.”

From 2021-24, Netflix’s skills and talent development initiatives across APAC have reached more than 8,000 people, demonstrating the company’s commitment to building sustainable creative ecosystems throughout the region.

NOEA Unveils Convention Content and Special 45 Ticket Incentive

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Tickets for the newly formatted and expanded National Outdoor Event Association (NOEA) Annual Convention & Awards will be available for purchase at a special price this year as the organisation announces details of its convention content.

Fusing inspirational and forward-thinking keynotes, meaningful debates, support for small business in the form of a marketing and mainstream afternoon tract of content, and some of the brightest names in the outdoor events community, the NOEA agenda will continue to mix educational talking points with networking.

This year’s event will be held under the banner of ‘Live at 45’, celebrating NOEA’s 45th anniversary and the enduring power of live events and have priced tickets with incredible discounts that make education, networking and celebration even more accessible.

The prices go like this:

  • The first 45 people or businesses to buy a ticket to the Convention will have an exclusive price of just £45 – a massive saving of £112

Then …

  • The first 45 people or businesses to buy tickets to the awards will have an exclusive £45 discount on the price – again a discount from £315 to £270
  • Buying the two together, means a saving of £157 (awards and convention)

Finally …

  • Exhibiting at the convention comes with a £45 discount, so £403 instead of £448

The offers are for NOEA members and only available on a first come first served bases.

The new refreshed format of the event features the Awards and After Party on Wednesday, 26 November, followed by the full-day convention on Thursday, 27 November. This schedule provides delegates with more time to connect, celebrate, and collaborate.

The introduction of the two-day format is a response to the exponential growth and rising demand from attendees. Entries for the awards, which will be closing soon, have shown a continual rise in both quantity and quality over recent years.

The event anticipates a larger attendance for both the day convention and the evening awards session, as well as the after-show party. The new format allows for increased networking opportunities for guests and delegates, which is one of the core reasons for the high attendance at the association’s annual showpiece.

David Byrne Unveils New Album Who Is the Sky?: Stream

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

David Byrne has released his ninth studio album, Who Is the Sky? via Matador Records. Stream the album below.

Who Is the Sky? is Byrne’s first full-length effort since 2018’s highly regarded American Utopia. The new album was produced by Grammy winner Kid Harpoon, with all 12 songs arranged by members of New York-based chamber ensemble, Ghost Train Orchestra. The LP arrives with a slew of guest appearances from the likes of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, St. Vincent, The Smile and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, and American Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco.

“At my age, at least for me, there’s a ‘don’t give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in,” Byrne said about his new work in a press statement. “I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I’m doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure.”

Byrne will celebrate the new release with a multi-leg world tour, which kicks off later this month on September 14th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After covering North America, the show will head over to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, wrapping up March 2026 with a two-night stand in Paris. The new shows will feature a band of 13 musicians, singers and dancers, including some members of the American Utopia band. Like that tour, everyone on stage will be fully mobile. See the complete itinerary below, and get tickets here.

The singer released a trio of singles leading up to the release of the new album: “Everybody Laughs,” “She Explains Things to Me,” and ““The Avant Garde.” Just last night, he previewed a fourth song, “What Is the Reason for It,” with a live band performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the interview with Fallon, he revealed how an autocorrected text helped name his new album.

The world tour will cap an eventful year for the former Talking Heads frontman, which includes getting married to his partner, Mala Gaonka, the same week as the release of Who Is the Sky? Byrne marked the special occasion by sharing the mostly instrumental wedding playlist that spans 42 songs and two-and-a-half hours.

This summer saw Byrne join Olivia Rodrigo at the Governors Ball festival for a surprise performance of Talking Heads’ classic, “Burning Down the House,” complete with synchronized choreography.

In February of this year, he joined Robyn at SNL’s 50th anniversary concert to perform her song, “Dancing on My Own,” as well as Talking Heads’ 1983 single, “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).”

‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Season 3 Sets Premiere Date, Unveils Teaser

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

The third season of “Jujutsu Kaisen” will premiere in January 2026, Crunchyroll revealed during a live-streamed fifth anniversary special for the Crunchyroll Anime Award-winning series.

Crunchyroll will stream the new season exclusively worldwide, excluding Asia, with episodes dropping weekly on the same day as their Japanese broadcast. The upcoming season, also referred to as “Jujutsu Kaisen The Culling Game,” will adapt the manga arc of the same name.

The first teaser trailer showcases protagonist Yuji Itadori grappling with conflict and despair after believing he killed numerous people during the “Shibuya Incident.” The preview also features an intense battle between Yuji and Yuta Okkotsu, the main character from the prequel film “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” along with a heated confrontation between new character Naoya Zen’in and Choso. Brief appearances by Megumi Fushiguro, Yuki Tsukumo and Maki Zen’in round out the teaser.

MAPPA returns as the animation studio, with Shota Goshozono directing and Hiroshi Seko handling series composition and script writing. Yosuke Yajima and Hiromi Niwa will provide character designs.

The Japanese voice cast includes Junya Enoki as Yuji Itadori, Yuma Uchida as Megumi Fushiguro, Daisuke Namikawa as Choso and Megumi Ogata as Yuta Okkotsu.

Based on Gege Akutami’s manga, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The manga concluded its run in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2024. The first anime season aired from October 2020 to March 2021, followed by a second season covering the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death and Shibuya Incident arcs from July to December 2023.

The series earned Anime of the Year honors at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in both 2021 and 2024. The theatrical film “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” won Best Anime Film at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards and grossed approximately $180 million at the global box office.

The anime is produced by Toho Animation, with Viz Media publishing the manga in the U.S.

Bigg Boss 19 looks good and fresh, say fans after BB replaces ‘cringe anthems’ with morning songs, unveils secret room

by jummy84 August 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Bigg Boss is one of the most popular reality shows on Indian television, with fans eagerly awaiting each new season for its dose of drama and entertainment. Over the past two seasons, however, viewers voiced concerns about the show losing its spark. Now, with season 19, it seems the makers have taken that feedback seriously. Just one episode in, fans are already praising the season for feeling fresh, exciting, and true to the Bigg Boss essence once again.

Salman Khan returns as host for Bigg Boss 19.

Fans review Bigg Boss 19’s first episode

One of the biggest changes from the past two seasons is that season 19 doesn’t have the so-called “cringe anthems” played to wake up the contestants. Instead, it has returned to Bollywood songs, just like in the earlier seasons. A Reddit user shared a screenshot of Bigg Boss contestants dancing to Dhating Naach from Phata Poster Nikhla Hero and wrote, “Finally no more cringe anthem this year in Bigg Boss.”

Fans also shared their views on the first episode of Bigg Boss. One wrote, “Song + secret room! Finally BB19 on a good start.” Another commented, “This season looks good and fresh.” A third comment read, “Bigg Boss ka redemption era is going on or what.” One fan added, “Looks like they finally got the budget to buy song licences vs the stupid anthem.” Another praised the casting and wrote, “BB has clearly opened a personality buffet this szn. No pre-made fds, just raw start!”

In the previous seasons, fans accused Bigg Boss of being biased towards contestants and even criticised it for interfering in their decisions. However, this year, Bigg Boss has chosen to stay out of the decision-making process, which aligns with the theme “Gharwalon Ki Sarkaar”—handing over the power to the housemates themselves.

About Bigg Boss 19

On the very first day, Bigg Boss asked contestants to choose a person they felt was unworthy of being a housemate due to having the least interesting personality. The majority named Farhana Bhatt, and Bigg Boss announced that her journey had ended. However, in a twist, she was moved into a secret room, where she will monitor the contestants 24/7 and even play a role in decision-making.

This season stars 16 contestants, including Awez Darbar, Kunickaa Sadanand, Baseer Ali, Ashnoor Kaur, Gaurav Khanna, Pranit More, Tanya Mittal, Amaal Mallik, Nagma Mirajkar, international performer Natalia Janoszek, Mridul Tiwari and Abhishek Bajaj, among others. Salman Khan will once again host Weekend Ka Vaar. The show is available to watch on JioCinema and Colors TV.
