Chubby Checker’s Unexpected Journey Into Psychedelia

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

At first listen, you may think you’re hearing unreleased music from Arthur Lee and Love. Or more accurately, an outtake from their album False Start with a less-than-on-top-of-his-game Jimi Hendrix on guitar, something akin to their collaboration on that record’s opener, “Everlasting First”. However, what’s coming through is “Stoned in the Bathroom”. It’s a track from Chequered!, the obscure, long-out-of-print “psychedelic” album waxed in 1971 by the most unlikely musician: Chubby Checker, the man behind the 1960 hit that popularized a dance craze, “The Twist”.

When Checker is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on 8th November, chances are you won’t hear much, if anything, about it, and that is even though it’s a top-rate collection. It’s a guilty pleasure for veteran musicians like Throwing Muses‘ Kristin Hersh and Lenny Kaye, as well as younger players like Peter Negroponte, the drummer for the psych-punk band Guerilla Toss.

Checker’s stylistic U-turn occurred when he teamed up with Ed Chalpin. He was the notorious producer who sued Jimi Hendrix in 1968, seeking to claim rights to his new musical riches under a three-year, one-dollar contract the guitarist had signed as a sideman during a 1965 recording session.

The 11-track album’s creation is shrouded in mystery, with few firm details about where it was recorded (some say Holland or Norway, while others claim New York, or both) or the studio musicians who played on it. In another turnabout, Checker penned all but one of the record’s songs. Originally titled Chequered!, it was first released only in Europe and sold poorly. Subsequent rereleases and bootlegs, with titles such as New Revelation and The Other Side of Chubby Checker, met a similar fate until a minor critical notice emerged with their 2012 reissue on Sunbeam Records.

Chequered! is chock-full of the musical and lyrical touchstones of late 1960s psychedelia – screaming Hammond organ, Hendrix-styled fuzz and wah-wah guitaring, thunderous drumming, and abundant appearances of the words “trippin’” and “high”.

“How Does It Feel?” is seven-plus minutes of country-gospel swing, accented with overdriven organ and lyrical proclamations like “how does it feel when you’re trippin’ with somebody else”. In “My Mind”, Chubby and the band sound like a fusion of Iron Butterfly and the Chambers Brothers. Checker does a call-and-response with thick fuzz-toned guitars, deploying grunts and squeals as he returns to the refrain “my mind comes from a high place”.

“Stoned in the Bathroom” features a carnivalesque organ and a military snare drum march as Chubby sings about being in this altered state in his bathroom on a Sunday afternoon. “No Need to Get So Heavy” is a boogie that sounds like the bastard offspring of Canned Heat and early Deep Purple, while “Slow Lovin’” is a sludgy blues akin to Grand Funk. “He Died” is a funereal lament—the story of Jesus’ crucifixion—which wouldn’t sound out of place on 666, the apocalyptic concept album by proto-prog rockers Aphrodite’s Child.

Throwing Muses’ Kristin Hersh has been a long-time fan since she became acquainted with the record via this 2012 reissue. “A fellow musician who knew I hated industry crap gave me a CD of it, saying, ‘Trust me on this one,’” says Hersh. “As for the mythology of the album, I heard Chubby went a bit mad, moved to Holland, discovered weed and Hendrix, and this was the result.”

The opener, “Goodbye Victoria”, is one of Hersh’s favorites, one she plans to cover with her noise rock band, 50 Foot Wave. “This song is a special moment in music,” says Hersh. “We’re so used to being sold fake passion that when you hear the real thing like this, someone lost on Earth and in sound, it hits really deep.”

Hersh has also witnessed the reaction to Chubby’s virtually unknown psych music when it’s deployed on an unsuspecting audience. “Once I guest DJ’d at a club in Edinburgh and played this record start to finish,” continues Hersh. “It had everybody on the dance floor. I had 50 drinks bought for me that night, all balanced precariously next to the turntable.”

Just how obscure was Chequered! at the time of its release? It’s one that even slipped unnoticed by one of rock’s most knowledgeable authorities, musician/author/producer Lenny Kaye. “I never knew it existed, even though I was working in a record store and writing about music at the time of its initial release,” adds Kaye. “It’s a strange album, almost as if Chubby had entered an alternative universe and turned into a credible soul singer with overtones of Curtis Mayfield and Baby Huey, escaping the caricature as a dance choreographer. It recreates the quasi-psychedelic soundscape of the late 1960s but was overlooked to the point of invisibility.”

New York drummer Dave Donen had the unique opportunity to both see Chubby perform his psychedelic album live and then play with his band a few years later. “At the time I was playing with people like Slim Harpo and Chuck Berry and knew the owner of Ungano’s, so I would get in free every weekend to see new bands like Free and Fleetwood Mac,” says Donen. “When I heard Chubby was going to be there, I went, thinking it would be a bit of a laugh.”

“What I saw was a very different Chubby,” continues Donen. “He was dressed in a psychedelic shirt and pants with colorful scarves and a headband, playing thunderously heavy music, a bit of cliched psychedelia, and, yes, he didn’t play ‘The Twist’ even though the audience kept calling for it.” Donen continues: “Ironically, four years later, I auditioned for and toured with his band for six months.  The set list was all rock ‘n’ roll oldies, with no psych or headband in sight.”

Klemen Breznikar, the founder of It’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine, is another fan. “From the first needle drop, you can feel this album has a remarkable momentum. It’s especially fascinating to compare it to his early 1960s recordings and see how he developed into a guy who wrote songs with a sort of streetwise soul with psych overtones.”

Peter Negroponte, drummer for the New York art rockers Guerilla Toss, concurs. “This is a compelling listen, perhaps a forgotten psychedelic gem. It’s full of big riffs, ripping organ, fuzzy guitars, and his attempt at socially relevant lyrics. There are some strong songs here, for sure, like ‘My Mind’ and ‘Stoned in the Bathroom.’”

As for Checker, his opinions on the album remain mysterious. He reportedly distanced himself from it soon after its release. In fact, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and his management, he will not be present at the induction event.

On Checker’s brief psychedelic chapter, Lenny Kaye offers a final word. “I have to applaud Chubby for trying something unexpected,” concludes Kaye. “Too bad it had to wait half a century to be unearthed.”

When the Scott family gathers for Christmas, the perfect dream reunion that Momma Scott (Anna Maria Horsford) planned quickly turns upside down. Her daughter Marissa (DomiNque Perry) returns fresh off a breakup with her boyfriend Richard (Lil Rel Howery) and is shocked when Richard arrives arm in arm with her estranged stepsister Kerry (Reagan Gomez). Marissa tries to play it cool and invites a surprise guest of her own who has everyone talking, while Kerry is cooking up a scheme that could ruin the whole celebration. Add in a few romantic mix-ups, old rivalries, and plenty of family secrets, and everyone is in for an unforgettable holiday. With love, laughter, and a bit of chaos ’round every corner, this Christmas might bring the Scotts closer together—or blow the roof off the house! Unexpected Christmas is directed by American filmmaker Michael Vaughn Hernandez, making his first feature film after many short films and the TV series “For the Love of Jason” and “Honest T” recently. The screenplay is written by Cassandra Mann. Produced by Trell Woodberry, Phil Thornton, Perrí Camper. 3 Diamonds Films & Eammon Films will debut Unexpected Christmas in theaters starting on November 7th, 2025 this fall. Who wants to watch?

Rani Mukerji And UK PM Keir Starmer’s Unexpected Meeting At YRF Studio – A New Bollywood Diplomacy? | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 9, 2025

On 8 October Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived at the iconic Yash Raj Films (YRF) studio in Mumbai during his two-day trade visit to India. The visit, aimed at increasing business and cultural cooperation, particularly in the creative industry, saw Starmer welcomed warmly by actress Rani Mukerji, YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani, and waving children.

Starmer screened the film specially at the studio and held talks with Mukerji and Widhani on how to enhance cooperation between the entertainment industries of the UK and India. The UK Prime Minister noted Bollywood’s rekindled interest in Britain, underlining its ability to drive jobs, investment, and cross-cultural exchange. “Bollywood is back in Britain,” he said, “with opportunity and growth and showcasing the UK as a world-class destination to make films.”

YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani also discussed the importance of the UK to YRF, reminding us that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) was shot there. The visit comes also after the 30th anniversary of DDLJ and with YRF currently producing Come Fall in Love—a stage adaptation of DDLJ in English—in the UK.

As part of this new collaboration, the British Film Institute and the National Film Development Corporation of India entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU will facilitate co-productions, make sharing talent possible, and open up easier access to UK locations and infrastructure for Indian producers.

This collaboration leverages previous success such as Slumdog Millionaire, the UK-Indian co-production that garnered £300 million on a £12 million budget, underpinning cross-cultural storytelling backed by UK financing and Indian ingenuity.

Jennifer Lopez Tries the ‘Toasted’ Mani Trend With an Unexpected Nail Shape

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Honestly, Lopez’s look is one of the simpler versions of the style. There are plenty of variations of the “toasted” idea, like the bridal version Gomez wore for her wedding, or the more involved “espresso” Bachik showed off that does necessitate the use of a magnet (magnets: how do they work?), but if you’ve got the time…

One important point: this doesn’t have to be the most high-effort manicure in the world. If you’re over long nails like Lopez’s squoval shape, consider even keeping your nails on the shorter side. “Nail shapes are trending shorter and more square, which is interesting because normally, as we transition into fall and winter, nails get longer,” Bachik revealed to Glamour. “I think maybe with all the craziness happening in the world right now, minimalism in beauty feels like a nice balance. We still want to feel beautiful, but not in a ‘look at me’ sort of way.”

Wayward is unlike any other thriller – for one unexpected reason

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Everyone is a bit too friendly, the local school a little too efficient… And the chatty principal of the school? Far too nice, with an eerie smile endlessly plastered across her face. It all feels a bit uneasy, deliberately so, which is why it’s so surprising that the one aspect of this story which does fit in perfectly is queerness, despite the sinister, small-town setting and genre at hand.

OK, it shouldn’t be that surprising if you’re even slightly familiar with the work of series creator Mae Martin, who also stars as Alex Dempsey, a police officer investigating some troubling disappearances at the local school.

Fans of Taskmaster or the Canadian comedian’s semi-biographical dramedy Feel Good might already be aware of how Martin explores their non-binary identity in their work. But even so, a genre-blending psychological thriller like this might be the last place you’d expect to see Martin navigate such themes. And what’s even more surprising is exactly how Martin goes about this.

It would have been easy to play off the horrors that so often come when queer people are forced to return to their hometown, or any small town for that matter. There’s a reason so many of us migrate to cities, after all, often as an escape from the bigotry that – not always – but often comes in the rural parts of pretty much any country.

But after Mae’s character Alex joins their wife in Tall Pines, no one bats an eyelid at his identity as a trans man. When a fellow cop instantly accepts Alex into the “brotherhood”, it’s hard not to wonder if this so-called acceptance might be part of the wider facade that’s hiding something dark and rotten at the heart of this town.

However, as the series progresses, it becomes clear that this isn’t actually the case at all.

Sarah Gadon as Laura Redman and Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey. Netflix

Yes, it turns out that Tall Pines is all kinds of messed up, but the problems at hand have nothing to do with intolerance or hate (at least when it comes to queer and trans identity).

Alex never hides who he is, and he never feels the need to talk about it lots either. This isn’t a queer drama about the struggles or even joy of being trans. Instead, this is an occasionally funny nightmarish thriller where the main character just so happens to be a trans man.

Non-conforming gender identities are rarely seen on screen as it is – and much less than some would have you believe – but what’s even rarer is to see these themes incorporated so organically in a wider genre story that has nothing to do with queerness at all.

When Alex pretends to be taking his testosterone shots as an excuse to escape and further his investigation, it’s a small detail that normalises trans identity without making it the focus. Not that there would be any issue in doing so – these stories are hugely important and valid too – but there’s something to be said for normalising such experiences in this current climate especially.

There’s an exchange around the midway mark between two teenagers called Abbie and Leila where the former jokes that, “Cops just swing their dicks around,” while the latter suggests “I don’t think [Alex] has a dick.”

In another show, this could have come across as distasteful or even disrespectful, but Wayward is queer through and through, so jokes like this hit differently here (especially given Martin’s key involvement in the writing itself). Leila is bisexual even, as many of the characters are suggested to be.

Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila and Sydney Topliffe as Abbie talking to Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey in a corridor, who is wearing a police uniform. They look panicked, dressed in blue jumpsuits

Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey, Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila and Sydney Topliffe as Abbie. Michael Gibson/Netflix

It’s not just through language or visibility where Wayward champions this, though. From the very first episode, Martin regularly appears shirtless and even naked in one particularly memorable sex scene between Alex and his wife. At a time when trans bodies are regularly othered, framing Martin’s sexuality so viscerally with so much nudity is groundbreaking in and of itself. Plus, it’s hot, and what would a thriller be without at least one moment as steamy as this?

But what’s perhaps most impressive about Wayward is how it neither demonises nor idolises queer characters like Alex. While some people in the show are more monstrous than others, they all exist in the murky greys of good or bad, right or wrong. And I’m not just talking about that icky tadpole water either.

Looking at the series as a whole, that’s what makes the ending in particular so special.

Because just when you think Alex has escaped Tall Pines with Abbie and his baby in tow, it turns out that this happy ending the show tricks us into seeing wasn’t actually real at all. The truth is that Alex lets Abbie down, choosing his new family over doing the right thing.

It’s never framed in a way to make you think Alex is selfish because he’s queer. If anything, it’s quite remarkable to see a queer family foregrounded in a show of this nature, made up of a trans man, his queer wife and their newborn child. In fact, the family is actively celebrated by the entire community, and sure, it’s mostly made up of cult weirdos now led by Alex’s wife, but it’s a celebration nonetheless.

Nothing is what it seems in Wayward, twisting and bending our expectations throughout. And that might be the queerest thing of all about this show, which redefines mainstream notions of family and genre with a delightfully queer outsider perspective. More than the thrills or the scares or the Mufasa one-liners, it’s this that helps set Wayward apart in the best way possible.

Iris Law’s Unexpected Color Combo Is So Fresh for 2026

by jummy84 September 18, 2025
written by jummy84

In the fashion world, certain things just go together like PB&J. A T-shirt and jeans. Black and white. Leggings and sneakers. A trench coat and rain boots. I’d venture to say that Iris Law’s newest color combo, however, is not at the top of anyone’s list of classic pairings—but that’s exactly what makes it cool. Why blend in when you can stand out? She defied expectations by teaming two unexpected hues on the red carpet, and I have a feeling she’ll inspire others to quickly follow suit.

Supporting her father, Jude Law, at the premiere of his new limited series, Black Rabbit, the younger Law wore head-to-toe Miu Miu, including a chocolate brown keyhole top and a marigold yellow pencil skirt. Admit it: You’ve never thought to wear these specific shades of brown and yellow together, have you? If you’re ready to give it a try, you certainly don’t have to invest in a full Miu Miu wardrobe. Scroll down to shop some Law-inspired pieces in our color combo du jour, and be prepared for the compliments to start rolling in.
