Bollywood actor Celina Jaitly has shared a deeply emotional update on social media following a key order from Delhi High Court regarding her brother, Major (Retd.) Vikrant Kumar Jaitly. He has been detained in the UAE since September 2024. Celina’s new note came soon after the court directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to help facilitate communication between her and Vikrant. The court’s order instructs the MEA to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate with authorities in the UAE and to use any available channel, including the TAMM app or other means, to establish contact between Celina and her brother.

Music Nation Launches in UAE to Collect Royalties with BMI Partnership

For years, the Middle East has been regarded as the next hot music market – for talent, streaming and even the live business. But few countries there have modern collective management organizations that can take in and pay out royalties for performing rights or mechanical rights on the publishing side, or neighboring rights when recordings are used on radio or television or in bars or restaurants. On Oct. 23, the start-up Music Nation, which has a partnership with BMI, will begin collecting for those rights in the United Arab Emirates, which includes Dubai and Abu Dhabi – and it will not be the only player in the market.

Related

The UAE’s 2021 update of copyright law established public performance and neighboring rights in the country. Since then, the UAE has given permits to two collection organizations: Music Nation and the Emirates Music Rights Association (EMRA), which has the backing of some foreign societies, including SACEM, and plans to operate as a nonprofit. (A third company has been collecting royalties for several years.) Music Nation, which is technically a Rights Management Entity (RME), is a private company. It has a partnership with BMI, which gives it access to important U.S. repertoire, and it has a deal with SoundExchange to provide neighboring rights administration, so it can license both publishing and neighboring rights for the use of recordings.

“With Music Nation’s technology and a leadership team that understands both the UAE’s cultural fabric and global music operations, we’re delivering a simple, transparent and modern licensing solution that easily licenses businesses and quickly pays creators,” said Music Nation founder and chairwoman Rasha Khalifa Al Mubarak.

The executive team includes CEO Amer M. Samhoun, COO James K. Petrie and chief creative officer Ali Dee.

The launch of Music Nation is the first international partnership of its kind for BMI, after that organization shifted to operating as a for-profit company backed by private equity.

It also represents the opening of a potentially important new market, since the UAE has said it is making the music business and the creative industries an economic priority, and Saudi Arabia is moving in the same direction. The markets are different, however. Foreigners make up about 88% of the population in the UAE, with significant numbers coming from elsewhere in the Middle East, the U.S. and Europe, India and the Philippines. Anglo-American songs and recordings are said to be popular, which means that the country could generate significant royalties for ASCAP, BMI and the UK CMO PRS for Music.

There will be competition, however. As a nonprofit in the traditional European model, EMRA has been championed by SACEM. Since 2020, the UAE has also had another RME, ESMAA, a subsidiary of PopArabia, which is majority-owned by Reservoir Media and run by Hussain Yoosuf, who goes by the nickname “Spek.” Although ESMAA does not have a permit to operate as a collective management organization under the UAE copyright law, it has an Abu Dhabi business license for rights management that allows it to collect and distribute royalties. Right now, it also has more reciprocal agreements in place than its competitors, including with PRS, GEMA (the German CMO) and STIM (Sweden).

Both Music Nation and EMRA will presumably pursue deals with those entities, as well as others, and the market could get very competitive.

Official Trailer for Polygamy Supernatural Horror ‘The Vile’ from UAE

“He brought home a second wife. But something else followed…” The first official trailer has debuted for a film titled The Vile, a supernatural horror thriller from UAE (United Arab Emirates). Directed by genre filmmaker Majid Al Ansari as his second horror feature so far, this film just premiered at Fantastic Fest last month where it won Best Film from the jury. It also plays at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain next this month. When a man decides to bring home a second wife, the new bride is not the only thing that enters the family house. Amani’s peaceful life as a wife and mother shatters when her husband brings home a second wife without her consent, unleashing mysterious dark forces into their household. Blending supernatural & horror elements, the film is a viscerally gripping exploration of polygamy, greed, betrayal, and trauma—told through the eyes of a mother and her daughter. Starring Bdoor Mohammed, Sarah Taibah, and Eman Tarik. While polygamy is a familiar concept in the UAE, Al Ansari’s film boldly questions notions of gender inequality & consent in relationships, making The Vile as thought-provoking as it is unsettling. Al Ansari found inspiration from legendary genre cult classics including Fatal Attraction and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, offering audiences a truly diabolical cinematic feast for the senses. Worth a look! Check this out.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Majid Al Ansari’s horror film The Vile, direct from YouTube:

“As a huge horror fan and as a filmmaker who has predominantly worked in this genre, I wanted to create a female-led film where the fear factor stems from the trauma that is inflicted after a man decides to marry for a second time, without the consent of his current wife. I had to get as close as I could to the same kinds of emotions women could experience when they are confronted by this situation. Empathy alone was not going to be enough and I spent an intense period researching so that I could tell this story in an authentic way. I didn’t want to make a statement or judgement about polygamy, but rather visually express a family’s psychological and emotional journey as a result of deception and secrecy.” –Director Majid Al Ansari

Amani (Bdoor Mohammad) is blindsided & heartbroken when her husband, Khalid (Jasem Alkharraz), brings a second wife into their home. Forced to accept the circumstances and determined to fight for the sake of her daughter, Noor, Amani remains in the house and attempts to assert her role as the family’s matriarch. Living with the new bride, Zahra (Sarah Taibah), crushes Amani emotionally & sends her into a downward spiral. When ominous, seemingly paranormal events begin to overtake the house, Amani launches a frenzied search for answers, leaving Noor fearful for her mom’s own sanity. Driven by instinct and terror, Amani becomes increasingly convinced there is something sinister in Zahra’s past—but her desperate quest for the truth threatens to push her further from reality. The Vile, also known as Hoba, is directed by UAE filmmaker Majid Al Ansari, director of the film Zinzana (or Rattle The Cage) previously, and a few other shorts. The screenplay is by Majid Al Ansari and Johnnie Alward, from a story by Majid Al Ansari. Produced by Derek Dauchy, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, and Rami Yasin. This premiered at Fantastic Fest and plays at the 2025 London & Sitges Film Festivals this fall. No US release date is set yet – stay tuned.
