Neurologist explains why resistance training is important for all ages: ‘Keeps bones dense, reduces fracture risk…’

Bone density naturally declines as we age, but the good news is that regular exercise can slow this process and protect you from serious injuries later in life. If you’ve been putting off strength training, consider this your sign – your stability, balance, and overall strength depend on it. Simple, consistent resistance work can make the difference between fragile bones and a resilient, healthy body as you grow older.

According to Dr Bing, resistance training is important for everyone. (Unsplash)

Dr Bing, a neurologist, biostatistician, brain-health advocate, and health content creator, has explained why resistance training is essential at every age to maintain strong, healthy bones and muscles. In an Instagram video shared on November 12, the neurologist explains how lack of exercise weakens bones and makes them susceptible to fractures, and emphasises how resistance training helps build strength, stability, and long-term bone health.

Why is resistance training important?

Dr Bing highlights the importance of regular exercise, especially resistance training, for optimal bone health, no matter what age you are. He narrates the story of one of his patients – “I recently saw a patient in her 70s who came in after a simple fall at home. She tripped on a step, didn’t even fall from a height and she broke her femur and also suffered a brain bleed from hitting her head and then she had seizures from that. She was then found to have osteoporosis which is when your bones become weaker and more brittle.”

He notes that, unfortunately, cases like this are quite common because of a lack of physical activity. If we fail to challenge our muscles, our bones lose strength, and the balance and stability that naturally wane with age deteriorate even more quickly. The neurologist stresses the importance of resistance training and explains, “But why is resistance training particularly important? Well, because it loads the skeleton and stimulates your bone growth and it signals your body to keep your bones dense and that would drastically reduce hip and femur fracture risk.”

What happens when you skip resistance training?

Dr Bing emphasises, “If you don’t do resistance training in your lower body or your core, you won’t have strong quads, glutes, and core. And your body would have a hard time stabilising itself when you trip. And weak muscles mean that you have slower protective reactions as well. And you can’t catch yourself in time if you fall.”

The neurologist clarifies that you don’t need to be an Olympic-level weightlifter or squat 200 pounds. The key is routine muscle engagement – resistance bands, your own body weight, light dumbbells, or anything that makes your muscles work against some resistance.

Fitness coach shares the 3 foundational principles of strength training to build lasting strength

Strength training isn’t just about going through the motions – it’s about mastering the basics with focus and consistency. Building real, lasting strength takes time, patience, and a commitment to perfecting the foundations rather than chasing quick results.

Fitness trainer Raj Ganpath – the Founder of Slow Burn Method, the Co-founder and head coach at Quad Fitness and the author of Simple, Not Easy – has revealed three foundational principles to focus on if you want to build enduring strength.

In an Instagram video posted on October 28, the fitness coach highlights, “If you can take the time to learn the foundational movements, engage the right muscles, and build on them over the course of the next few years, you will continually get stronger inside the gym and feel stronger outside the gym.”

Foundational movements of strength training

Raj recommends learning the six foundational movements of strength training, which include – the plank, the hang, the squat, the deadlift, the overhead press, and the rope. He highlights, “The reason for focusing on these six movements is that they cover pretty much all the major joints and muscles in the body, and learning to do them will serve you well for a very long time.”

Engage the right muscles

The fitness trainer emphasises that the whole point of strength training is not to merely complete the movements for the sake of it, but to stimulate and strengthen the right muscles. He explains, “This stimulation happens when you utilise the right technique and ensure you are feeling the right muscles. Achieving this level of engagement will require a lot of practice, self-awareness, and most probably the guidance of a coach, but it is most definitely worth it.”

Build on the foundational movements

Raj emphasises building on the six foundational movements – practising and working on them over and over again, doubling down on the basics – as the key to building lasting strength, without getting distracted by quick fixes. He stresses, “If you can accomplish this, 90% of strength training is done, and everything else is just minutia.”

Rishab Shetty’s 2-Year Kalaripayattu Training: The Key To His Authentic Warrior Performance In Kantara Chapter 1! | Glamsham.com

Rishab Shetty is on top of the world after his new movie, Kantara Chapter 1, was creating a buzz since its release on October 2. As a prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, the movie features Shetty once again in the lead role, this time as the writer and director as well, with critics hailing him for his stellar performance and bold narrative.

To get fully into the character of Berme, a warlike fighter from the village of Kantara at the time of the Kadamba dynasty in Karnataka, Shetty devoted two years to learning the ancient Indian art of Kalaripayattu. Under the tutelage of Vipindas Gurukkal at the hallowed Athma Kalari Village, his path was dotted with demanding discipline, injuries, and rigorous daily practice.

Athma Kalari posted behind-the-scenes looks at his training on Instagram, highlighting Shetty’s makeover. One of the viral shots is of him in mid-stretch in the midst of a brutal session, with the caption:
“Every bruise, every drop of sweat became pure art on screen. True dedication. True warrior spirit. Hats off, Rishab Shetty.”

Another piece of content celebrated his transformation:
“Not only an actor — a storyteller, a visionary. From the kalari mat to the silver screen, folklore comes alive through Rishab Shetty.”

Kantara Chapter 1 plunges into the depth of Karnataka’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, touching upon themes such as tradition, identity, and conflict. Besides Shetty, the grand saga also features Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah in important roles.

With soul and heart invested in the movie, Kantara Chapter 1 is not only a film experience — it’s an ode to tradition, regimen, and storytelling in its purest form.

Sydney Sweeney sheds light on training regime for boxing biopic ‘Christy’

Sydney Sweeney sheds light on training regime for boxing biopic ‘Christy’

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Sydney Sweeney has shed light on the prep she did to embody boxer Christy Martin in the new biopic Christy.

  • READ MORE: Sydney Sweeney doesn’t get why you’re obsessed with her: “I’m just being me”

The film charts the career of American boxer Martin, who rose to prominence as one of the most successful female athletes in the sport in the ‘90s and ‘00s, later enduring and surviving domestic violence and an attempt on her life by her husband and former trainer, who is portrayed by Ben Foster in the film.

Speaking at the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday (September 5),  Sweeney touched on her much-discussed transformation into the film’s titular boxer, which has seen her gain over 30 pounds in preparation for the role.

Sweeney told the crowd that she trained for around three months with a boxing coach before filming, and also worked with weight trainers and a nutritionist. “I trained two to three times a day, every day, and then while I was filming, I trained, as well,” said Sweeney.

As for packing on muscle, director David Michôd said there was “a lot of Chick-fil-A” involved. Sweeney agreed, adding: “A lot of Smuckers, a lot of milkshakes, a lot of protein shakes. But it was incredible being able to completely embody such a powerful woman.”

Martin, who consulted on the film, said her boxing persona felt very separate from her genuine personality, which she felt Sweeney did an “awesome job” balancing.

“Christy the boxer was just the persona, very bombastic and very egotistical, but that is not who I am. I am actually very shy and reserved,” she explained. “I have these two different parts of my personality, which I think is why Sydney Sweeney does this awesome job.

“She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected. She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie.”

Scheduled for a November 7 release in the US, there is no UK release date announced as yet for Christy, although it will be one of the gala screenings at this year’s London Film Festival on October 17.

Elsewhere at the film festival, the actor made headlines after emphasising that she would not be talking about the recent American Eagle controversy, saying: “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”

It comes after the Euphoria star drew criticism for her involvement in the brand’s jeans campaign, which many online have accused of having racially charged undertones. Both Lizzo and Doja Cat have criticised the campaign, while Sweeney was heckled at a separate film premiere recently, with an onlooker shouting: “Stop the ad, that is being racist!”

American Eagle released a statement in early August, saying: “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story”. The commercial received praise from US President Donald Trump, who also expressed delight at the news that Sweeney was registered as a Republican supporter at the last election.

Recently, Sweeney hit back at critics of another of her endorsements, pointing out what she perceives as the hypocrisy of people criticising her for selling soap infused with her own bathwater.

bitchy | Dean Cain, 59, could barely limp his way through the ICE training obstacle course

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s a big competition to find the most chilling or infuriating piece of news about the Trump administration. For my money, one of the biggest candidates for “the worst thing about this whole sh-tshow” is that Congress gave ICE $76.5 BILLION in “new money,” with $30 billion for new staff. Taxpayers are now paying for a ramped-up, mercenary-lite faux-police force with little training and broad authority to arrest, abuse and detain people at will. With this new funding, ICE has loosened their restrictions on who can join. They’re now accepting applications from 18-year-olds with no experience and wingnut actors in their 50s. Speaking of, Dean Cain made a big deal, several weeks ago, about how he applied to be an ICE agent. Someone published Cain trying to go through an ICE-training obstacle course and… well… it did not go well for the 59-year-old.

First of all, if this was just some random 59-year-old guy doing a random obstacle course, I would not judge this. I wouldn’t care at all! It’s specific to this guy and this obstacle course. Dude thought he was signing up to be a big SS officer with a gun, rounding up minorities, and he can barely crawl through a pipe.

It’s been more than a quarter-century since Dean Cain played the Man of Steel—and it shows. The 59-year-old actor has begun his training to become an “honorary” ICE officer after signing up earlier this month as part of the agency’s massive recruitment drive, and Fox News was there to witness his efforts. In a Saturday morning segment on Fox & Friends, correspondent Alexis McAdams interviewed Cain at an ICE training facility in Brunswick, Georgia, about his decision to join ICE. Cain explained to McAdams that he joined because he “stand[s] with our law enforcement.”

”People don’t realize, they think that ICE is this horrible, nefarious group and they’re not—they’re phenomenal people,” he said.

The segment then cut to footage of Cain struggling to make his way through an obstacle course that took him over a wall, through a tunnel and required him to drag a dummy around. He was also filmed firing guns at a shooting range alongside acting ICE director Todd Lyons, who previously expressed a desire for turning the deportation process into something ”like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings.”

Commenters on social media were quick to highlight Cain’s lack of prowess on the course, with one person noting, “So they can literally just easily run from this dude and not get caught. Cool.” Another asked if the video was slowed down, while someone else said that the footage proved Cain never did his own stunts. ”It’s kinda like watching a dog agility show but with a senior dog near death that attempts the course to the sympathetic applause from the audience,” one X user said.

[From The Daily Beast]

The Fox News banner is like “look, Superman joined ICE!” And it’s just some out-of-shape has-been who desperately needs a knee brace, a couple of anti-inflammatory pills and some Icy Hot. About the whole Superman thing… again, Superman is an immigrant. He “came” to America illegally, in a spaceship or whatever. The “actual” Superman would not join ICE.
