Star Trek fans may have said goodbye to two of the Paramount+ series in the franchise in the last two years (Picard in 2023, Discovery in 2024), but there are new additions still to come. One of them is Starfleet Academy, and now, thanks to the panel at 2025 New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 11, we know when it will premiere: January 15. We also now the full roll-out schedule for their first season.

During the panel, Paramount+ also released a new trailer, which you can watch above, introducing the cadets, teasing interactions between Holly Hunter’s captain and chancellor and Paul Giamatti’s villain, and more.

Plus, Stephen Colbert shared in a video, which you can watch below, that he will be the voice of Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean of Students, giving daily announcements to the students and alerting them of anything that needs their immediate attention.

This new series was first said to be in development in February 2022. Just over a year later, it was announced that Paramount+ had picked it up to series (in March 2023).

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!” co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau said in a statement at the time.

“We are excited to introduce Star Trek fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” added Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data, Paramount Streaming. “Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term Star Trek fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek universe.”

The series has yet to premiere, but it has already been renewed! Below, we’re taking a look at everything we know about the latest Trek series. Keep checking back for updates!

When will Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiere?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 will premiere on Thursday, January 15, 2026, with the first two episodes. The rest of the 10-episode season will be released weekly on Thursdays, with the finale dropping on March 12.

What is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. This young group of cadets will come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Who’s in the Starfleet Academy cast?

Holly Hunter stars as Nahla Ake, the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy and Captain of the U.S.S. Athena, who also happens to be a long-lived half-Lanthanite.

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said Kurtzman and Landau in a statement.  “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

Paul Giamatti has been cast in the recurring role of part Klingon, part Tellarite Nus Braka, the season’s villain with an ominous past connected to one of the cadets.

Said Kurtzman and Landau, “Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us. The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”

Discovery‘s Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), and Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance) and Voyager‘s Robert Picardo (The Doctor) are reprising their roles. Notaro and Picardo join as series regulars, and Fehr and Wiseman join as guest stars.

And playing cadets are Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta.

Brooke Palmer/Paramount+

Rosta is Caleb Mir, an orphan with a troubled past – and unlikely Starfleet cadet. Diané is Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon cadet who dreams of becoming a medical officer. Brooks is Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam, the first of her kind to ever attend Starfleet Academy. Hawkins is Darem Reymi, an aspiring captain from a wealthy home world. Shepard is Genesis Lythe, an admiral’s daughter determined to make her own name in Starfleet. Steiner is Tarima Sadal, a Betazoid and daughter of the president of Betazed.

Gina Yashere recurs as Commander Lura Thok, a Klingon/Jem’Hadar hybrid who is the chancellor’s First Officer and Cadet Master.

And at New York Comic Con 2024, it was announced that Tatiana Maslany will be a recurring special guest star in Season 1. No character details have been revealed.

Is there a Starfleet Academy trailer?

Yes, and more than one! In addition to the one at the top, there’s also the trailer that was released at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con. It offers a look at the series’ iconic campus in San Francisco plus the new starship and integral part of the Starfleet Academy campus, the U.S.S. Athena.

“You are all the first Academy class to return to our campus in San Francisco after more than 120 years,” Captain Ake tells the cadets. “Some of you are here for your families, some for yourselves. Together, you are the best and the brightest from across the galaxy, a tapestry that is Starfleet. You will learn the skills that shaped our greatest officers. Like them, we’ll ask you to give more of yourselves than you know you have. To dream without limitations, whatever challenges came before today led you to this moment. You, here now, you weave together the future, so go out and seek, explore, boldly go where no one has gone before. It is my great honor to welcome you all to Starfleet Academy.”

Be sure to watch the video — below — to the end for a look at Giamatti’s villain, plus check throughout to see the names of legendary characters (the James T. Kirk Pavilion is just one instance!).

Will there be a Starfleet Academy Season 2?

Yes! At New York Comic Con 2024, the series was given an early renewal for Season 2. The news came as the show was still in production on Season 1 in Toronto.

Who’s behind the new series?

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. The series’ premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo and directed by Alex Kurtzman. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Plus, Jonathan Frakes, Trek legend and director extraordinaire, told TV Insider he’s “[looking] forward to Starfleet Academy” when discussing his work behind the camera still to come in May 2024.

“It’s like they say: you can choose your friends, your lovers, but you can’t choose your family.” Mubi has debuted their official trailer for the film titled Father Mother Sister Brother, the new Jim Jarmusch film that has been in the works for years. It premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, where it strangely won the Golden Lion award, and also played at NYFF. It will play in limited theaters starting in December later this year. A new ensemble comedy feature a huge cast of characters – this is a triptych with segments set in the US, France, Ireland. Estranged siblings reunite after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents – a mom, dad, & brother / sister. A series of character studies: quiet, observational and non-judgemental — a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy. Starring Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, Françoise Lebrun. Despite this solid cast, this is one of my least favorite films of the year. Excruciatingly boring and entirely pointless – don’t think it deserves any awards or anyone’s attention. But that’s just my own opinion.

Here’s the main trailer (+ poster) for Jim Jarmusch’s film Father Mother Sister Brother, via YouTube:

Father Mother Sister Brother Teaser

Father Mother Sister Brother Teaser

You can watch the teaser trailer for Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother right here for the first look.

Father Mother Sister Brother is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The 3 stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country. Father is set in the Northeast US, Mother in Dublin, Ireland, and Sister Bother in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental – a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy. Father Mother Sister Brother is written and directed by acclaimed American indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, director of many great films including Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Mystery Train, Night on Earth, Dead Man, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Coffee and Cigarettes, Broken Flowers, The Limits of Control, Only Lovers Left Alive, Paterson, Gimme Danger, and The Dead Don’t Die previously. Produced by Charles Gillibert, Joshua Astrachan, Carter Logan, and Atilla Salih Yücer. This is premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival underway now. Mubi opens Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother in select US theaters starting on December 24th, 2025 late this year. How does that look?

“There’s a fine line between love and hate. A very fine line.” Dark Star Pictures has unveiled the official US trailer for the French crime comedy film called Plastic Guns, which originally premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar there. It’s finally getting released in the US this year, after already opening in French cinemas more than a year ago. Inspired by two controversial cases in French criminal history, this searing tragi-comedy exposes the abuses the police can commit in their pursuit of notorious criminals. A Frenchman traveling in Denmark is arrested, accused of being a multiple murderer on the run named Paul Bernardin. Although he maintains his innocence, two rookie detectives are convinced that he’s guilty. Meanwhile, in Argentina, another Frenchman celebrates his wedding; he is the same age and has a very mysterious past. The film stars Delphine Baril, Charlotte Laemmel, Laurent Stocker, Gaëtan Peau, and Anthony Paliotti. One review states: “Plastic Guns is one of those movies that require complicity, giving into delirium and not asking for too much coherence, plausibility, or depth.” Ha… If you’re a fan of oddball, peculiar, off-beat French comedies – this is a good one to seek out and enjoy.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jean-Christophe Meurisse’s film Plastic Guns, from YouTube:

Michel Uzès (Gaëtan Peau), a man in his forties, is arrested during his trip to Denmark. He is suspected by the police to be Paul Bernardin, a wanted murderer accused of killing his wife and three children a few years ago. While Uzès maintains that he is innocent, two amateur detectives – Léa and Christine, set out to conduct their own investigation. They know the whole affair inside out and feel certain that he is the wanted murderer. Meanwhile, in Argentina, a Frenchman in his forties with a mysterious past celebrates his wedding with his pretty, young fiancée… Plastic Guns, originally known as Les Pistolets en Plastique in French, is directed by French genre filmmaker Jean-Christophe Meurisse, director of the films One of Us, Apnée, and Bloody Oranges previously. The screenplay is written by Jean-Christophe Meurisse, collab with Amélie Philippe. Produced by Marine Bergere, Antoine Blesson, Romain Daubeach, Nicolas Descalles. This initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight last year. Dark Star Pics will debut Meurisse’s Plastic Guns in select US theaters + on VOD this fall. Fascinating Doc Film ‘Pistachio Wars’ Trailer About California’s Water

“Why does no one talk about it?” Watermelon Pics is releasing this fascinating, upsetting new documentary film titled Pistachio Wars, a remarkable true story about the billionaires behind the California pistachio farms. Made by investigative journalists who spent years looking into the truth behind what’s going on. They follow a trickle of information upstream, leading to disgusting revelations about California’s water and the people hoarding it to build their own agricultural empire. As Los Angeles burns, everyone wants to know… why do cities in California often seem to constantly go up in flames? Journalist Yasha Levine and filmmaker Rowan Wernham take a road trip into the dark heart of the California Dream. They look at the system and the people that have allowed unchecked development to rage across the state, destroying the environment and creating mega-cities and mega-farms. Right at the center of their story is Stewart & Lynda Resnick. They’re billionaires who live in Beverly Hills. And they have a monopoly on the pistachio trade. Of course they do! It’s always some greedy bastards like this ruining everything just to hold onto their piles of money. I wish everyone could enjoy delicious, health pistachios without this kind of terrible environmental damage.

Official trailer for Yasha Levine & Rowan Wernham’s doc film Pistachio Wars, direct from YouTube:

“Plays like a Chinatown for the age of global warming — complete with mystery, political corruption and at the center of it, the question we’ve confronted since civilization began: who gets the water?” –Filmmaker Adam McKay

Pistachio Wars Doc Poster

Journalist Yasha Levine follows a lead about a water sale between a farmer and a small desert town—and discovers a hidden side to California’s healthy snack industry. At the very center of the story are a couple named Stewart & Lynda Resnick. They’re billionaires. They live in the flashiest mansion in Beverly Hills and have a monopoly on the pistachio trade. They’ve taken control of California’s water—draining rivers, building plantations in the middle of a desert, leaving a trail of environmental collapse. Towns ravaged by drought, farms built on oil fields, mass extinction, a water heist straight from the plot of Chinatown, and… war with Iran? It’s a road trip into the dark heart of the American Dream. Pistachio Wars is co-directed by journalists / filmmakers Yasha Levine and Rowan Wernham, both making their feature directorial debut. Produced by Rowan Wernham; executive produced by Thierry Jutel and Adam McKay. This initially premiered at the 2024 Doc Edge Festival in NZ last year. Watermelon Pictures has debuted Pistachio Wars direct-to-VOD on October 7th, 2025 this fall. It’s available to watch now – head to the film’s official site.

Full Trailer for Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ with Jessie Buckley & Paul Mescal

“What shall I do?” “Keep your heart open…” Focus Features has revealed the full offiical trailer for the film Hamnet, one of the most acclaimed films of the year so far. Hamnet is the latest feature directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, following her work on Marvel’s Eternals, this is her getting back to making something more meaningful and intimate. Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet. Jessie Buckley stars as Agnes Shakespeare, Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare set in the 16th century. It’s telling the story of Agnes – the wife of William Shakespeare – as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her only son, Hamnet. A human and heart-stopping story as the backdrop to the creation of Shakespeare’s most famous play, Hamlet. TIFF describes it as a look at how The Bard was not a cold genius, he was “a real man whose literary prowess was irrevocably impacted by his domestic life.” The full cast includes Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Jack Shalloo, David Wilmot. With a wonderful score by Max Richter. This has been getting nothing but exceptional reviews since premiering at Telluride & TIFF, and will play in theaters starting November / December. Have a look.

Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Chloé Zhao’s film Hamnet, from Focus Features’ YouTube:

Hamnet Official Trailer

Hamnet Official Poster

You can rewatch the initial teaser trailer for Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet film right here for the first look again.

Intro via TIFF: “In William Shakespeare’s day, the names Hamlet & Hamnet were interchangeable. The newest film by Chloé Zhao uses that context as the basis for a tender exploration of Shakespeare’s domestic life, connecting a family tragedy to one of his most famous works. Maybe we can better understand Hamlet, Zhao suggests, if we consider that it was developed while the most famous writer in the Western canon was mourning the death of his 11-year-old son, Hamnet. Based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet’s main character isn’t The Bard — played here by an impressive Paul Mescal — or even the child who gives the film its name. Hamnet belongs to Agnes – Shakespeare’s thoughtful wife, played by an enthralling Jessie Buckley, who bathes the film in her warmth. Many historical accounts preface reports of Hamnet’s death with statistics about how common child mortality was in the 16th century, as though it barely made an impact. Hamnet rejects that premise, showing Shakespeare not as a distant, untouchable genius but as a real man whose literary prowess was irrevocably impacted by his domestic [family] life.“

Hamnet is directed by the Oscar-winning Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao, director of the films Songs My Brothers Taught Me, The Rider, Nomadland, and Marvel’s Eternals previously. The screenplay is written by Maggie O’Farrell and Chloe Zhao; adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s book also titled “Hamnet”. Produced by Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes, Steven Spielberg. This is premiering at the 2025 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals this fall. Focus Features will then debut Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet film in select US theaters starting November 27th, 2025, on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, later this year before a wide expansion in more theaters coming up in December during awards season. “Your guilt must fall below the 92% threshold or you will be executed in precisely 90 minutes.” Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for a sci-fi movie called Mercy, one of many upcoming artificial intelligence thrillers being made by Hollywood. This one is about an “A.I. Judge”, very similar in many ways to Minority Report but with a different spin on our tech future. Mercy (not to be confused with Just Mercy from a few years ago) is directed by sci-fi / Screenlife filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov, his latest feature directed for Hollywood since making Profile in 2018. 90 minutes to prove your innocence or face execution. Chris Pratt & Rebecca Ferguson star in this cautionary tech tale. In the near future, a detective stands on trial accused of murdering his wife. He now has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to the advanced A.I. Judge he once championed, before it determines his fate. Starring Chris Pratt, with Rebecca Ferguson as A.I. Judge Maddox, Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers. Yep it looks like a January movie! Opens in IMAX and 3D at the end of January 2026 if anyone wants to find out if he’s guilty or not?

Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Timur Bekmambetov’s sci-fi movie Mercy, from YouTube:

Official Trailer for ‘Clika’ Starring Jay Dee as Aspiring Musician ‘Chito’

“All I can do is make my music, because music has always been my destiny.” Sony Pictures has debuted the official trailer for a music movie called Clika, made by filmmaker Michael Greene. A small town musician from Yuba Country, California pushes to carve out a place for himself in the new wave of Mexican-American music after a clip of him performing one of his songs goes viral. This film was originally supposed to open in October this year, but it has been pushed back for release sometime in early 2026 instead. Chito tries carve out a place for himself in the new wave of Mexican-American music. As his star begins to rise, Chito finds himself entangled in a high-stakes world where fame comes with a price. In a story of ambition, tradition, and self-discovery, Chito is ultimately forced to confront the choices he’s made in his relentless pursuit of the American dream. From producer Jimmy Humilde, Clika stars Jay Dee as Chito, DoKNOW, Laura Lopez, Nana Ponceleon, with Peter Greene, Percy “Master P” Miller, and Eric Roberts. This looks a bit cheesy in obvious Hollywood ways, rough around the edges, but seems like a worthwhile story anyway.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Greene’s movie Clika, direct from Sony’s YouTube:

“One dream. One shot.” In the debut film from trailblazing music producer Jimmy Humilde’s production company, aspiring small town musician Chito (Jay Dee) is determined to make it big. When a clip of him performing one of his songs goes viral, he seizes the opportunity & pushes to carve out a place for himself in the new wave of Mexican-American music…and ultimately gets caught in a game more dangerous than anticipated. In a story of ambition, tradition, and self-discovery, Chito is ultimately forced to confront the choices he’s made in his relentless pursuit of the American Dream. Clika is directed by American filmmaker Michael Greene, director of the films Live and Vaccinate Watts previously. The screenplay is written by Michael Greene, Sean McBride, and Jimmy Humilde; from a story by Michael Greene, Jimmy Humilde, Ski-Ter Jones. It’s produced by Jimmy Humilde, Sean McBride, Ski-Ter Jones, Lalo the Giant, & Dave “Foots” Footman. Sony releases Greene’s Clika movie in theaters starting in early 2026 next year. Wnat to watch?
