bitchy | Telegraph: Prince Harry was a half-in royal in Toronto, ‘albeit via the backdoor’

by jummy84 November 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Last night, Prince Harry attended the True Patriot Love Foundation’s National Tribute Dinner in Canada. It was the culmination of a whirlwind 48-hour “tour” of Toronto, which saw Harry meeting veterans and active servicemen and women, checking out various military operations and generally being charismatic and cool. Harry was invited to the National Tribute Dinner and he was the de facto keynote speaker as well. True Patriot Love Foundation is a major partner of the Invictus Games, and that’s why they invited Harry and that’s why he came to their events. You can read more about the dinner here at Sussex.com.

Throughout Harry’s Toronto visit, there has been limited press availability (really just a couple of local outlets) and no paparazzi photos and no credentialed international media covering these events. The only reason we have any photos at all is because a photographer attached with True Patriot Love has been trailing Harry at his events, and the photos have been published on Sussex.com. That limited media availability has allowed Harry to keep a lighter footprint in Toronto and focus solely on what he came into town to do. Somewhat hilariously though, Harry has gotten a lot of attention during what was supposed to be his brother’s big week in Brazil. Well, now it’s time for the British media to run the same old play: Harry’s Toronto trip is a signal that he wants to be a working royal again! These people are dumb as a box of hair. From the Telegraph’s big article, written after the Other Brother made a big keen speech at COP30.

A backdoor half-in arrangement: When the Duke of Sussex left the UK to pursue an independent life abroad, he was told in no uncertain terms that he could not adopt the “half in, half out” approach to royal life he had demanded. There was no way that he and Meghan could promote their charitable endeavours on behalf of the institution while at the same time pursuing their own commercial interests, Buckingham Palace made clear. Almost six years on, it looks very much as if the couple are doing something very similar, albeit via the backdoor.

A statement of intent! The Duke’s two-day visit to Toronto has been described by some as something of a marker in the sand, a statement of intent. This was the “grown-up statesman-like Harry” pitching his stall, proving his value and demonstrating where his life was headed, one friend told The Telegraph. And having finally had enough of the tell-all interviews and intimate memoirs, that life looks not unlike the kind he might have been pursuing had he stayed in the UK. Is the visit, therefore, a subtle pitch to his father: “See how useful I could be?” Harry’s support for the military community has never been in doubt. But whether this was a trip based solely on his passion for the Canadian armed forces is a matter for debate. Could it be that it was also intended to act as a subtle nod to the personal support he wants to show Canada, a key Commonwealth country?

Harry & Meghan are pursuing different interests! When Harry and Meghan moved to the US, they made a virtue of being joined at the hip – who can forget the entwined palm trees, salt and pepper analogies? Now though, as Meghan pursues her dream of becoming a billionaire, her husband is reverting to a rather more familiar way of life. All he wants to do, those close to him insist, is to support his pet causes.

Harry will continue to work this way: He may have been banned from pursuing his charitable endeavours on behalf of the Royal family but Harry has seemingly decided that he will plough on regardless. Quasi-royal visits and trips like his visit to the UK in September, and Toronto this week, are likely to become much more common. Meanwhile, in an effort to burnish his philanthropic credentials, he continues to dish out money. When he was in the UK, the Duke announced a personal £1.1m donation to Children in Need to help tackle youth violence in Nottingham. This week, he is understood to have made a six-figure donation to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa wreaked havoc across the Caribbean. As he looks to the future, Harry is also understood to be mulling over the possibility of launching his own not-for-profit social enterprise.

The left-behinds are looking sparse: Meanwhile, on this side of the pond, the number of working members of the Royal family has been further depleted with Andrew’s defenestration. Would the King ever bring Harry off the subs bench? Not a chance. And King William even less so. The Sussexes, though, look set to plough on undeterred with their own version of that “half in, half out” model.

[From The Telegraph]

First of all, this isn’t about Harry “pitching” a half-in solution to his father. These people said the same thing about the Sussexes’ trips to Nigeria and Colombia last year, alongside the palace-issued talking points of “why are the Sussexes doing charity work and traveling on behalf of their charities in the first place, if not to be royal?!?!” At some point, these royal reporters are going to need to sit down and have the conversation that “charity work” does not equal “royal work.” When the short-sighted Windsors rejected the “half-in” suggestion, they believed that they were banning Harry and Meghan from doing anything resembling charity work, which is frankly a stupid assumption but indicative of the rot within the monarchy. What the Sussexes are doing is altogether funnier and more interesting – they’re showing that they don’t need the stagnant royal establishment or the British media to do their own charity work AND commercial work.

Madhur Dixit Thanks Toronto for ‘lovely Meet and Greet’ Amid Controversy

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Madhuri Dixit is making headlines for her Dil Se… Madhuri event in Toronto. The actress faced backlash for allegedly arriving nearly three hours late. Fans who attended expressed their thoughts on social media and criticised the organisers for promoting the event as a concert when it was perceived to be a talk show. Some individuals also criticised Madhuri’s late arrival, while others described the evening as a disappointing experience and a complete waste of time and resources.

However, following the event, the Dil To Pagal Hai actress shared a post on Instagram thanking her fans and expressing her gratitude. She also announced dates of her further meet and greet events that will take place in New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York. This did not sit well with the fan and they demanded an apology from the actress for a similar event that took place on November 2. The confusion ensued when fans thought that the November 2 event would be a dance and musical night, but actually it was a ‘Meet and Greet’ event instead.

“Why were you 3 hours late with no apologies?” read one comment while another person wrote, “Madhuri Dixit Nene. I grew up loving you and watching you. As of now. Toronto is very disappointed in your show. They were misled. False advertising on what the show was supposed to be. What everyone was expecting and what actually happened.” Complaining about a fake advertisement for the Toronto show, another netizen added, “But you owe Toronto an apology for fake advertising…your own post on your profile doesn’t call it a Meet and Greet. You say an evening of dance , music and celebrations”

Meanwhile, Atique Sheikh, the event organiser stated recently that although the actress was on time, she got late due to ‘miscommunication from the management.’

He said in a statement, “It was a management miscommunication. That’s how some fans must have gotten confused, we can’t have a concert in a small banquet. It was pretty well mentioned before about the show being a Fan Meet. Madhuri ji has worked with us in the past as well and something like this has never happened. She in fact performed on her hit songs. Our idea was to present her celebrated journey in the industry and have a fan interaction.”

Madhuri Dixit’s Toronto Show Slammed As ‘Misleading’ By Fans After Three-Hour Delay

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit found herself under fire this week after her live gig titled “Dil Se… Madhuri” in Toronto turned into a flashpoint of fan frustration and social media outrage. Attendees alleged misleading promotions, excessive delays and a format starkly different from the one advertised.

The event, held on November 2 at the Great Canadian Casino Resort, launched with an Instagram poster that boldly stated: “Toronto, are you READY? The timeless diva of Bollywood – Madhuri Dixit – is coming LIVE to set the stage on fire! Experience her magic, her moves & her unforgettable charm – ALL in one night.” Tickets for the evening reportedly sold for up to USD 200, raising expectations for a high-energy concert performance.

Madhuri Dixit was late, but was “unapologetic”

However, what many attendees witnessed was far from that. The show was reportedly scheduled to start at 7:30 pm, but Madhuri made her appearance only around 10 pm—leaving many fans waiting, frustrated and disappointed. Several posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram that the delay was unannounced and unacknowledged, with no official apologies or updates. “We were told an hour show; instead left at 11:05 pm after waiting since 7.30,” one attendee wrote. “Mis-advertised, insulted the audience’s time.”

Additionally, attendees claimed the format of the evening did not match the promotional promise of a full-blown concert. Rather than a full set of songs and dance, the event leaned more into talk-show style segments, influencer appearances and filler activities. One attendee described it as “a glorified Q&A with two songs at the end” and publicly asked for refunds. “This wasn’t what we paid USD 200 for,” another said.

The backlash spread rapidly online. Comments such as “worst show one can ever go to,” “complete rubbish,” and “poorly organised” filled social-media threads. One TikTok post compiled clips of the waiting crowd, bored faces and eventually some fan walk-outs, amplifying the incident internationally. At the same time, a few defended Madhuri’s performance itself—spotlighting her 90-second dance medley that followed her arrival. “Madhuri danced beautifully… but the rest was chaos,” read one comment.

From the viewpoint of the event’s organisers, the fallout appears to be more about expectation mismatch than performance quality. A senior source involved in the production, speaking anonymously, acknowledged delays caused by travel logistics and lighting issues but denied that the event was mis-sold. They maintained “house rules” that prevented more than one full dance set due to curfew limitations in the venue’s region, though these restrictions were reportedly not communicated to ticket-buyers.

For Madhuri, the controversy arrives at an awkward moment. Riding high from her performance in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and an upcoming psychological thriller series, attendees say the Toronto incident suggests a disconnect between celebrity stature and event execution. One insider opined: “Large stars can draw crowds globally, but live-event logistics and local production matter just as much—fans pay for experience.”

The incident also adds to a broader conversation around live show accountability in the post-pandemic era. As artists and venues return to global touring, fan tolerance for delays and misrepresentation appears to be shrinking. Event-industry analysts suggest that complaints like this could push platforms to clarify start-times, format changes and refund policies more strictly.

While Madhuri herself has not personally addressed the backlash, a short statement released by the management said: “Any delays were beyond the control of the artist. We appreciate the patience of all attendees and are working with the organiser to respond to concerns.” It remains unclear whether refunds or concessions will be offered.

For the fans who travelled from multiple states, including Ontario, Michigan and New York, the disappointment is tangible: what was anticipated as a 90-minute concert became a three-hour wait followed by a much shorter performance. One ticket-holder summed it up: “Still glad to see Madhuri live—but we weren’t told we’d be waiting three hours, with 90 % of the time not her performance.”

In the end, the incident serves as a reminder that star power alone cannot guarantee fan satisfaction. Audience expectations—shaped by marketing, celebrity brand and ticket pricing—are demanding sharper clarity and execution. For event organisers, the lesson is clear: bold promises need matching logistics and transparent communication. For celebrities, the incident underscores the risk that even a loyal global fan base can become vocal when expectations go unmet.

Should Film Festivals Like Sundance, Toronto Get Smaller?

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

I have fond memories of sitting in the back row of the tiny Holiday Cinema 3 at the Sundance Film Festival with indie executive Bingham Ray, in acquisition mode, checking out a new movie that only the programmers had ever seen.

Back in the ’90s through the aughts, the excitement of discovering the next “In the Bedroom,” “sex, lies, and videotape,” or Jennifer Lawrence was palpable, when buyers for American narratives were plentiful and the indie market was on the rise. It wasn’t all about celebrity suites and swag giveaways back then. The burgeoning Main Street parties were always musts to avoid, except for one: It was always tough to get into Cinetic’s Monday night party, but you learned everything you needed to know in that upstairs room at Zoom.

Mile End Kicks

Those days, and Zoom — and its one-time owner and Sundance founder Robert Redford — are gone. But as Sundance preps for its January 2026 Park City finale, the industry is wondering what the first Sundance Boulder edition in 2027 will look like. Many hope the festival will contract in scale.

My first visit to the 13th Middleburg Film Festival, set at billionaire founder Sheila Johnson’s posh Salamander resort in the rolling hills of Virginia outside of Washington, D.C., reminded me of the pleasures of a small film festival. If just 45 new features are on view, every attendee gets into the venues. If the press and talent guests are a select few, there’s more access to the folks roaming the halls.

I dropped into a late-night library circle as Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (whose “Hamnet” shared the audience prize with “Rental Family”) confessed she’d like to open a funeral home. I ate lunch with Rose Byrne and Mary Bronstein (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”), Nina Hoss (“Hedda”), and Zoey Deutch (“Nouvelle Vague”). I ate dinner with Middleburgh producer-advisors Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and “Train Dreams” auteur Clint Bentley (“Sing Sing”) and his star Joel Edgerton. And at the annual barbecue, I hung out with songwriter Diane Warren, who still hopes to win a real Oscar after 16 nominations, as opposed to settling for an honorary one. (For the 2023 Oscar show, she practiced her song “Applause” on a dummy piano, she confessed, which turned out to be live accompaniment for singer Sofia Carson on the broadcast. That’s grace under fire!)

Good stuff, right? Over the years, I’ve gotten to know industry people at small festivals around the country, from California’s Mill Valley, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, and Sonoma to Florida’s Sarasota, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale, Washington’s Orcas Island, Oregon’s Ashland, and New York‘s Hamptons. I bonded with friends and expanded my ever-growing film community.

The question for any small festival is how to control growth and expansion. Do you have to keep growing? Middleburg director Susan Koch is weighing these questions now, as demand for attendance grows. She doesn’t want her local audience to not get into her screenings, as happens to regular passholders at Telluride ($780), who often wait in line for popular titles only to see most seats taken by priority passholders ($4900).

Telluride director Julie Huntsinger, who has her 20th festival coming up, keeps the program to about 60 titles. She is not able to control the rising costs and price-gouging in the wealthy Colorado mountain town. “It’s a box canyon,” she said on the phone. “Prices are going to be whatever they’re going to be. But in terms of growing, we’re small, we’ll keep to the same amount of passes.” At Telluride, in effect, the patrons pay for the cheaper passes, which have not gone up in price for 16 years.

The danger of a festival getting too large — Toronto plays more than 200 features — is that it overwhelms its attendees with too much choice. “People want that curation,” said one festival leader, who criticizes festivals like Toronto for programming too many movies that are not “a bold new voice taking a chance. I hope Sundance becomes a little more concise. Bigger is not better.”

Another festival executive added, “Sundance and Toronto are selling titles in the independent acquisitions market. You never know what is the center of attention there.”

The Toronto International Film Festival has scaled back, actually. Since 2015, the feature films in the official selection steadily declined from 287 to 210 in 2025. “We put ourselves on a diet in the mid-2010s,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. “People were just scrambling, trying to see everything, and buyers were trying to see all the sales titles. They felt there was too much on offer. It was hard to tell what they should focus on most. They wanted a tighter selection.”

Bailey has also made an effort to make the festival more walkable, eliminating theaters that required transportation. Now, every screening venue is within a 10-minute pedestrian distance.

Bailey sees festivals as “living things, and they have to evolve,” he said. “Typically, festivals, once they catch on with the industry and public, will increase in size or at least in ambition. Sundance has an opportunity to completely reset.”

On a much smaller scale than Toronto, even though it’s in a bigger city, Film at Lincoln Center’s New York Film Festival main selection has stayed about the same size for years: this year’s slate was 29 films, with additional sidebars tallying a total 75 features. The festival books two films a night in its main venue, Alice Tully Hall. “It’s the best experience for the audience,” said Film at Lincoln Center president Daniel Battsek.

As the indie market contracts, what should Sundance’s primary role be in 2027 and beyond? “Sundance has a long-held and well-deserved reputation for nurturing and anointing new talent; this process and the festival play a critical role in the independent film ecosystem,” said Battsek, who points to a movie like Jordan Peele’s Sundance breakout “Get Out” in 2017. “The audience reaction created a bit of a wave that continued right through to all sorts of success.”

As for Sundance, as festival director Eugene Hernandez often points out, the first half has long been noisier and more crowded, while the vibe changes as the second half returns to the quieter movie-focused Sundance of yore. Sundance has also created a smaller sidebar festival every year, first in London, then, in recent years, Mexico City.

Separated from its ritzy ski resort setting, will Sundance Boulder return the festival to its indie roots and resist the pressure to permit Main Street’s corporate swag suites and raucous parties? Hernandez is still focused on Sundance 2026, and his team has yet to make many key decisions about Sundance 2027, from screening venues and hotels to festival hubs. They have been mounting screenings with the local film community, which includes enthusiastic cinephile college students.

Sundance Boulder promises many changes from icy Park City, which had become daunting to navigate. It could be tempting for the festival to expand into a more spacious town. Already, Sundance has announced plans to center its activities in the walkable downtown area, including the pedestrian mall Pearl Street, wrote IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, “with access to restaurants, cafes, vintage theaters, performance arts spaces, a multiplex, university facilities, and other auditoriums.”

As Sundance makes its transition to Boulder, we can hope that its leadership not only builds a more sustainable film festival but resists the temptation to expand into the Boulder playground.

“Even if it doesn’t work out, at least I tried…” Film Movement has debuted the trailer for a Canadian indie film titled Boxcutter, about an aspiring rapper goes on a quest across the gentrifying streets of Toronto to find his music in time for the event that could change his life. It premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year and drops in limited theaters starting today (on October 24th) heading to VOD next month. After aspiring rapper Rome’s apartment is burgled, and his only copy of his music stolen on his laptop, he devises a plan with the help of his friend Jenaya to track down his four producers & reassemble his album in time for an event with megastar music producer Richie Hill. Starring Ashton James as Rome, with Zoe Lewis, Viphusan Vani, Clairmont The Second, Matthew Worku, & Rich Kidd. Per the description, the film offers a gritty, heartfelt coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of Toronto’s vibrant music and art scene. Boxcutter dives into the hustle & grind of independent artistry, exploring the lengths one will go to to protect their passion and dreams. Looks like another great indie discovery this year – worth a watch.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Reza Dahya’s film Boxcutter, direct from YouTube:

Aspiring rapper Rome (Ashton James) has the talent and vision to break out in Toronto’s hip-hop scene, but his crippling insecurity is holding him back. When he learns that megastar producer Richie Hill will be making an appearance at a local club, Rome seizes the chance to meet him and get his album into Richie’s hands. However, disaster strikes when Rome’s apartment is burglarized and the only copy of his album is stolen. Racing across the city with his friend Jenaya, Rome scrambles to track down his collaborators and his records before the show begins and he misses his one shot. Boxcutter is directed by the Canadian indie filmmaker Reza Dahya, his second feature after making Samanthology previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is written by Chris Cromie. It’s produced by Soko Negash, Reza Dahya. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Film Movement will debut Dahya’s Boxcutter film in select US theaters starting October 24th, 2025 – playing now. For more info, visit their official site.

Foo Fighters to perform in Edmonton, Regina, Toronto and Vancouver in 2026

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

The Foo Fighters are going on a short tour next summer and four of the 12 stops will be in Canada.

The rock band announced their Take Cover Tour 2026 on Thursday, which will begin next August in Ontario with opening act, Queens of the Stone Age.

The first show is slated for Aug. 4, 2026 at Rogers Stadium in Toronto.

The tour then heads west, where Saskatchewan’s Mosaic Stadium is getting its first concert in eight years.

The Foo Fighters will play at the Regina stadium on Sept. 15. The last time a concert was held at the stadium was in 2019, when Garth Brooks played two shows.

The Regina Exhibition Association, which manages the stadium, has struggled to attract events, contributing to financial woes.

The band teased the Edmonton stop on Instagram a day before the concert announcement, posting a video to their stories of a flyover the iconic Edmonton stadium with its yellow and green seats.

“We’re thrilled to host the Foo Fighters at Commonwealth Stadium, the largest venue of its kind in Canada,” said Heather Seutter, the director for Commonwealth Stadium.

“Events like this draw in people from across the city, the province and beyond, shining a light on Edmonton’s welcoming spirit.”

The Foo Fighters have played in Edmonton several times, including a show at Rogers Place in 2018 and Rexall Place in 2015.

The tour’s last Canadian date will see the band take over BC Place in Vancouver on Sept. 20.

The band will also perform eight shows south of the border, in Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Nashville, Washington, D.C., Fargo and Las Vegas.

This is the band’s first North American tour since Taylor Hawkins, the longtime drummer for rock band Foo Fighters, died in 2002.

Hawkins joined the Dave Grohl-led group in 1997 after original drummer William Goldsmith left, which made him one of the longest-serving members of the then-28-year-old band.

It was the second time Grohl has experienced the death of a close bandmate. Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana when Kurt Cobain died in 1994.

General sale tickets for all the shows go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. local time on Friday, Oct. 31 on Ticketmaster.

Rush announces 2026 reunion tour with 2 Canadian dates in Toronto

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Original Rush band members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson announced that they’re planning a reunion tour for the iconic Canadian band in 2026.

It’s the band’s first shows since the R40 tour in 2015 and drummer Neil Peart’s death in 2020.

The tour, called the Fifty Something Tour, will celebrate Rush’s music and legacy as well as Peart’s life, according to the band.

“It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of Rush alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil,” said Lee. “A lifetime’s worth of songs that we had put our cumulative hearts and souls into writing, recording and playing together onstage. And so, after all that has gone down since that last show, Alex and I have done some serious soul searching and come to the decision that we f–king miss it, and that it’s time for a celebration.

“So in 2026 my BFF Lerxst (Lifeson) and I are going to hit the road once again to pay tribute to our past and to Neil by performing a vast selection of Rush songs in a handful of cities. No small task, because as we all know Neil was irreplaceable.”

Lee said that Peart’s place behind the kit will be filled on tour by “incredible” German drummer Anika Nilles.

“We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honour Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist,” Carrie Nuttall-Peart and Olivia Peart, Peart’s widow and daughter, said in a joint statement.

“As the band enters this new chapter, it promises to be truly unforgettable. We are excited to see how their new vision unfolds, and to hear this legendary music played live once again.”

Rush will perform multiple shows in seven cities across Canada, the United States and Mexico, beginning June 7, 2026 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Actor James McAvoy was reportedly punched at a Toronto bar on Monday evening.

First reported by People magazine, the Scottish actor and director was apparently hit, unprovoked, by a patron at Charlotte’s Room, located on King Street West in the downtown area, mere blocks away from where the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) takes place.

The Split star had attended the premiere of his directorial debut, California Schemin’, at TIFF with his wife Lisa Liberati on Saturday.

James McAvoy Allegedly Attacked in Toronto Bar While at TIFF

by jummy84 September 10, 2025

James McAvoy was reportedly attacked in a Toronto bar on Monday while attending the Toronto International Film Festival to screen his directorial debut, “California Schemin’.”

According to a report by People, McAvoy was at Charlotte’s Room in Toronto on Monday when a man hit him just before midnight. The “Split” star allegedly tried to calm the aggressor down before others came to remove him from the bar.

An individual close to McAvoy told People, “James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out. James’ back was to him and the man just punched him.”

The unnamed source added that McAvoy was fine after the alleged punch and that he stayed at the bar to laugh off the incident.

“California Schemin’” is inspired by the real-life story of Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, two aspiring rappers from Dundee, Scotland. When they are turned away by the London music industry in the early aughts because of their accents, they rebrand themselves as Silibil N’ Brains, a bad-boy rap duo from the U.S. West Coast.

Before the film’s TIFF premiere, McAvoy shared his admiration for Bain and Boyd with Variety, comparing them to “folk heroes” like “Robin Hood.”

“Nobody cares that they got caught,” McAvoy said. “Nobody cares that they never made it. We just love that they fucking went down there and played the system. When the system’s rigged against you, try to undermine it or circumvent it. Game the game!”
