Veteran Showrunner Tom Fontana Elected President of WGA East

written by jummy84

Tom Fontana, the respected showrunner known for HBO’s “Oz” and NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street,” has been elected president of the Writers Guild of America East.

The WGA East electoral results were disclosed Thursday evening. Fontana defeated novelist and screenwriter Charles Kipps for the top elected post at the union that represents more than 7,500 film and TV scribes who live east of the Mississippi River.

Sasha Stewart was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Michael Rauch was elected Vice President of the Film/Television/Streaming sector. Nicole Conlan, Chris Gethard, Liz Hynes, Sarah Montana, Sharyn Rothstein and Erica Saleh were elected to serve on the Council representing Film/TV/Streaming members.

Sie Morley, Nitish Pahwa and Samantha Smylie were elected to serve on the Council representing Online Media members.

Fontana will succeed Lisa Takeuchi Cullen at the helm of WGA East. She served two terms as president and lead the guild through its tumultuous five-month strike in 2023. Last year, the WGA East also saw a transition in its senior management as Sam Wheeler came on board as executive director.

According to the WGA East, participation in the board and officers election was strongest among the guild’s bedrock of members who work in Film/TV/Streaming, as some 14% (4,363) of those eligible members cast ballots. In Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News, votes were cast by 7% of eligible voters (1,251). For those in the guild’s Online Media sector, the turnout was 5% (1,966).

Grace Antony Weds Composer Aby Tom Cyriac in a Heartfelt Kochi Ceremony

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor Grace Antony, one of Malayalam cinema’s brightest talents, is officially married. On Tuesday, she and composer Aby Tom Cyriac exchanged vows at the Our Lady of Dolours Roman Catholic Church in Kakkanad, Kochi. The ceremony was kept deliberately private with no elaborate rituals, no flashing lights, no heavy guest lists. Sharing the moment with fans, Grace posted a simple caption on Instagram: “No sounds, no lights, no crowds. Finally we made it. #justmarried”.

The pair, who have been together for nearly a decade, chose intimacy over grandeur, creating a moment that felt both personal and deeply romantic.

Two Journeys, One Partnership

Grace Antony stepped into the industry with Happy Wedding in 2016 and quickly became known for her ability to slip seamlessly into diverse roles. Whether it was the restrained brilliance of Kumbalangi Nights, the humour of Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham, or the intensity of Rorschach and Appan, she has proven herself one of the most versatile performers of her generation. Recently, she ventured into Tamil cinema with director Ram’s Paranthu Po, starring opposite Shiva, further widening her creative footprint.

Aby Tom Cyriac, meanwhile, has made his mark from behind the scenes. Starting out as an arranger and programmer, he eventually became a full-fledged composer. His discography includes titles like Paavada, Second Innings, Shikhamani, Sakalakalashala and Kadalassu Thoni. With contributions to over 300 projects across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi cinema, Aby is respected as both a prolific composer and a trusted collaborator for some of the industry’s biggest names.

Warm Wishes from Colleagues

As soon as the news broke, social media was abuzz with congratulatory notes from friends and colleagues. Industry peers such as Unni Mukundan, Kani Kusruti, Samvritha Akhil, and Rajisha Vijayan dropped in heartfelt comments under Grace’s post, celebrating the couple’s new chapter. For fans who have followed Grace’s journey from her debut to her latest projects, the wedding felt like a moment of collective joy.

What stands out most about this celebration is how reflective it is of Grace and Aby’s personalities. Just as Grace’s screen presence balances subtlety with power, and Aby’s music blends craft with emotion, their wedding was understated yet meaningful. No extravagant displays, just love, commitment, and the promise of a shared future.

‘The Terminal List: Dark Wolf’: Tom Hopper Explains Psychological Perils

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

[This story contains spoilers from The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.]

Navy SEAL brother and loyal friend Raife Hastings, played by Tom Hopper, quickly surmises there are no brakes applied regarding his team brother, Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), in the fourth episode of Prime Video’s prequel series Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

In “The Sound of the Guns,” Edwards has already broken his promise to his brother-in-arms that the takedown of Iraqi assassin-for-hire Danawi would be enough to get some type of revenge for killing their Iraqi sergeant and asset in Mosul (during the first episode), and then move on with their dishonorable discharged lives. But now the audience has discovered that the two former SEALS are in even deeper with black ops agent Jed Haverford (Robert Wisdom) and his team, as they plan to stop a multimillion-dollar deal that will help put Iran closer to its goal of developing their own nuclear weapons. Hastings is not feeling it, and he can see that Edwards is even more enthralled to go along for the espionage ride, instead of their original agreement to kill Danawi and move on.

Haverford has assembled his team, which includes Edwards and Hastings, in Germany to intercept the handoff of the real bearings in exchange for giving Iran fake ones. But the plan goes severely awry when Hastings’ and Edwards’ planned ambush of the convoy is interrupted by German intelligence officers in a surprise attack, leaving their members wounded and in need of a retreat. And then there is one big betrayal by a Haverford team members that adds even more peril to the surprised ambush. Who saw this coming? Hastings did, of course.

Hastings seems to have a sixth sense that all is not what it appears in the world of black ops, but he is loyal to his SEAL brother and will ride out this dangerous game until Edwards hopefully comes to his senses and says he has had enough. It’s becoming clear, however, that Edwards has found his element, even if Hastings has not.

The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with British Game of Thrones actor Hopper to talk more in depth about his Raife Hastings, how he operates in a world of war, what loyalty looks like among Navy SEAL brothers and which is harder: SEAL training or defying a queen and her fire-breathing dragon?

***

I have to ask: Which was harder, being consumed in flames by a dragon [Hopper’s Dickon Tarly, son of Randyll Tarly, refused to bend the knee to the Dragon Queen on Game of Thrones], or training as a Navy Seal and CIA operative for this Terminal List prequel series?

(Laughs.) The stunt guys did a lot of the work for being burned by a dragon, and a lot of that was CGI. So that was a lot easier. The work you put in to be a Navy SEAL is much more in depth. I would be remiss to not say anything about the amount of work that those guys put in to make us look authentic. It’s a constant state of making sure we were doing the right thing on Terminal List to be a legitimate Navy SEAL. So I would have to give it to the Navy SEALs.

Would it be safe to say that Raife Hastings was already connected to the CIA in some way before he and Edwards got kicked out and involved in the espionage business throughout Europe?

Well, actually, Raife is not linked to them at all really. He is very aware of the agency because they had operations where he’s from in Mozambique, and he has seen his family go through some tough times; they used to operate with the CIA and his dad was in the South African Special Forces. So there’s an awareness, but he is certainly not involved with them.

What are some similar personality traits that you share with Hastings? And how are you two different?

He’s certainly much calmer in those crazy heightened situations than I would be. Raife’s nickname is “Mtulivu,” which means “the calm one” [in Swahili]. He always has this very cool head in any situation. No matter how crazy the firefight is, he’s able to keep a cool head for his men around him and deliver information to keep them safe in a very calm manner, which is what he is known for. I’m not as calm, but Jared Shaw is one of our executive producers and one of the [former] Navy SEALs who teaches all of us how to operate accordingly and authentically, and I take a lot from Jared for Raife. Jared has a constant calmness about how crazy the day is. No matter how crazy the action is, he’s got this cool head. I take a lot of inspiration from the way he is in situations.

But our similarities, like Raife, I’m incredibly loyal. We are extremely loyal to our brothers; anyone who I consider a teammate I will do anything for. I will throw myself in front of a bus for people like my family, my children and my wife. They are my day-to-day team, and my extended family, I’ll do anything for them. And that’s who Raife is. He considers the brothers around him like family. Tthe way he operates with his teammates is who I could relate to.

What drew you to the role of Hastings?

There were a few things. I was a big fan of the books. I had come across Jack Carr [Terminal List author] previously in the years before; so I was a big fan of the books and Jack’s work. I think what’s so special about Terminal List is the group of people behind it; the authenticity that comes with it and the challenge of our show. What we do on Terminal List is so huge and the show is so ambitious, I sometimes wonder how we do what we’ve done in the time frames and resources we have available. It’s incredible! What I always look for in anything I’m doing, in terms of a job, is my next big challenge. And this is a huge challenge for me.

Because they had the books, and because the character is already kind of established with the fanbase from the books, it was a huge responsibility for me to adhere to that and make sure I’m doing him justice. Raife is a popular character; so, for me to go on there and deliver him as a live-action character was extremely important and a challenge I relished. I only hope I’ve done it justice for the fans of the books.

Raife Hastings (Tom Hopper) and Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), left, in The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

Prime Video

What were some of the toughest scenes to shoot, physically or mentally, that made you realize all over again why you love what you do as an actor?

The physical stuff, I always find that’s a little bit more less tiring; you keep more energy up when you’re doing the physical stuff. The psychologically straining stuff is more demanding, like taking your mental state to a very dark place.

Some of the scenes I have to do, where there’s a torture element to the show, one of the things I like about Raife’s character is that he is not fundamentally like that, but he’s able to take himself there. And that’s what’s so beautiful about some of these SEALs — they are not like those people, but there’s a side to them that, if they need to, if they have to, if the moment requires it and the job requires it, they can go to the darkest places you could imagine as a human. That is what Raife seems to do, it’s that switch between dark wolf and light wolf. If you’re a light wolf, you’re able to walk around civilian life and be a very humble, normal nice person. When you need to turn on that dark wolf, you are able to turn that switch.

And those scenes are challenging because you have to take yourself, as the actor, to that place. Jared was so instrumental in that for me because he would come and talk in my ear quietly when I had to get to that place and talk me through it. And as an actor, that’s the challenge to go there mentally and take yourself where they would have to get to, and to play that out authentically.

Do you think Hastings or Ewards begin to feel a sense of disloyalty to each other in their brotherhood as the series carries on?

Well, there’s a gray area. I don’t think either of them were disloyal to each other. I think they approach the mission from a very different standpoint. Raife says something that is very important for that relationship,: “Some men will go to war to fight the enemy, and others will go to war to fight themselves.” I think the reason Ben is fighting this is because he’s fighting something greater. He wants to go and fight because he’s fighting something deeper and he’s convincing himself he’s fighting for that right cause. Raife just sees it differently: This is not what we signed up in the teams for, thi  is something deeper and something that I’m not interested in fighting — this is not our fight. We’re being used as pawns in a much bigger chess game here.

It’s like a marriage, right? When you’re looking at a problem and you’re trying to keep it together, but you’re both trying to fix it from a completely different avenue. It’s going to fall apart. That’s what this is, it is two warriors fighting for very different reasons.

I know you will be working on the next season of Terminal List, what else is on your plate?

There are a few things. One of the things that I just finished, which will be coming out next year, is a movie called Better, which myself and my wife, Laura [TK], produced with our producing partners, Dash Productions. It’s a thriller where I play identical twins. Talk about challenges! When I read that script, it was like, “This is what I want to do next!” We just wrapped on that and it was a huge challenge, but one that came off brilliantly. We were really pleased with how the movie turned out, and I think audiences will love it.

And we’re right in the middle of shooting Terminal List, the second season.

West Point Graduates Cancel Ceremony Honoring Tom Hanks

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

The West Point Association of Graduates has canceled a ceremony that was set to honor Tom Hanks with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, which recognizes an “outstanding citizen” whose career exemplifies the U.S Military Academy’s ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country,” according to The Washington Post.

In an email to faculty, Retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, president and chief executive officer of the Association, explained the decision as a desire to “focus on [the Academy’s] core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force.”

Hanks was announced as the 2025 recipient of the award in June. At the time, the Association highlighted the actor’s numerous portrayals of military figures in films such as Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Greyhound; his work as a producer on acclaimed series like Band of Brothers and The Pacific; and his long-standing advocacy for veterans, including leading a fundraising campaign for the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

“Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the care of the American veteran, their caregivers and their families, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans,” Robert McDonald, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Association’s board chairman, said when Hanks was first announced as the honoree.

The West Point Association of Graduates’ cancelation of the award comes amid a wave of controversial changes the Trump Administration has made to the US military. Since returning to office, Donald Trump has fired numerous top leaders, ordered reviews of the curriculums at academies like West Point, and just this week, he renamed the Department of Defense as the Department of War.

His son, Donald Trump Jr., celebrated the decision to strip Hanks of the award, writing on X: “Great to see [Secretary of War Pete Hegseth] holding the line for @realdonaldtrump to make the military strong again. West Point should be focused on training the next generation of war fighters, not celebrating woke leftwing celebrities with awards!!!”

Tom Holland Says ‘The Odyssey’ Is the ‘Best Script I’ve Ever Read’

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Tom Holland continues to heap praise upon Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey,” which he wrapped production on earlier this year before kicking off filming on “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Holland is playing Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, in the movie. The actor recently told Agence France-Presse that Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic is “the best script I’ve ever read.” No offense, Spider-Man.

“Chris [Nolan] is a real collaborator,” Holland added. “He knows what he wants… but it is not an environment where you can’t pitch ideas or build characters in certain ways.”

“The Odyssey” marks Nolan’s highly-anticipated follow-up to his Oscar winner “Oppenheimer.” Matt Damon leads the movie as Odysseus opposite a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal. Holland told GQ Sports in July that filming The Odyssey” was “the job of a lifetime, without a doubt” and “the best experience I’ve had on a film set.”

“It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” Holland added at the time. “Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Holland previously told “Good Morning America” that getting the offer from Nolan to star in “The Odyssey” was “the phone call of a lifetime” and “reminiscent of getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and I’m really, really excited.”

As for “Spider-Man,” Holland is currently in production on his fourth standalone Marvel movie as the iconic web-slinger. Overall, the movie will mark his seventh appearance in the MCU. He told AFP that it “still feels like the first time.”

“Yesterday, I was on top of a tank driving down the high street in Glasgow, in front of thousands of fans, and it was awesome,” Holland said. “It was so incredible, it was exciting, and exhilarating, and it felt fresh.”

“The Odyssey” is set for release on July 17 from Universal Pictures. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” follows on July 31 from Sony.

Sony CEO Tom Rothman on Hollywood Execs Depiction in ‘The Studio’

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman knows what it takes to be a studio exec, and he called out the way people in the role are depicted in The Studio.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Hollywood satire series follows Matt Remick (Rogen), the new executive of Continental Studios who struggles to run the fictional company.

“In each one of those episodes, there is a kernel of brilliant, blinding truth, and that’s what makes great satire,” Rothman told Letterboxd in an interview published on Thursday. “The show is wonderfully satiric.”

While he was able to admire “that kernel,” Rothman said that “everything else is horseshit.” He continued, “Maybe some days, but most days we’re not morons.”

Despite his issues with the portrayal of studio execs, Rothman insisted he was able to view the Apple TV+ series “with the sense of humor intended.” In fact, he even referenced The Studio while giving a presentation in March.

“When I took the stage a few months ago at CinemaCon, I walked out and said, ‘Hi, everybody, I’m Seth Rogen!’ which was good for a laugh there,” he said, referring to Rogen’s character on the show. During the final two episodes of Season 1, Remick presented at the Las Vegas exhibitors’ conference.

Meanwhile, Rothman also said that The Studio accurately depicts Remick’s undying passion for cinema despite the persistent mistakes he’s made as an executive. “What it gets right is that there’s a fundamental truth of studio executives trying to do the right thing, and there being many, many obstacles to doing [so],” Rothman said. “The difference there is it depicts a great deal of moral compromise in pursuing that. That’s not really the way it is. Most people are people like me, who love movies, have a lot of integrity and are just trying to do the best we can.”

Season 1 of The Studio was critically acclaimed and nabbed 23 nominations at the 77th Emmy Awards. Additionally, the show made headlines for featuring an all-star cast of guest stars including Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Dave Franco.

Following the Emmy nominations, Rogen and Goldberg spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about tying the record with The Bear for most comedy nominations in a season.

“I think I’m still in shock a little bit, but it’s very, very, very nice. It’s not something that has been a part of our career, really, in any way, shape or form,” Rogen said. “We’ve had a lovely career despite awards, and so the fact that at this age, there’s a whole new novelty and level of recognition that we’ve never gotten is very nice, and it’s surreal that it’s for something that is so Hollywood specific.”

Mubi has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new Jim Jarmusch film Father Mother Sister Brother. The clip features a lot of Tom Waits, who stars alongside Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Luka Sabbat, and others. Watch the video below.

Father Mother Sister Brother opens in U.S. theaters on Wednesday, December 24. It premieres this Sunday, August 31, at the Venice Film Festival.

Father Mother Sister Brother is writer and director Jim Jarmusch’s feature film since 2019’s The Dead Don’t Die. The new movie, according to a press release, is “carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country.”

Tom Waits has a long collaborative history with Jim Jarmusch, dating back to 1986’s Down by Law. He’s since appeared in 2003’s Coffee and Cigarettes and The Dead Don’t Die, while also doing the soundtrack for 1991’s Night on Earth.
