Reba McEntire says a toilet seat cover gifted by her sister keeps the star grounded.

Singer Reba McEntire

The 70-year-old actress says the product, emblazoned with “The Twinkle”, reminds her she is “not a star”.

Reba told the new issue of People magazine: “My sister Alice, for Christmas one year, gave me a toilet seat cover.

“On the top of the toilet seat, it said, ‘The Twinkle,’ to let me know I’m not a star – I’m a twinkle. Keeps me grounded.”

The singer recently marked 50 years since she signed her first record deal.

Reba recalled it was “scary” to step foot into the music industry, but she was supported by her family and friends every step of the way.

The You Lie hitmaker remembered: “Time flies when you’re having fun. Wow, I still see where I was signing the contract 50 years ago … I had no idea about the music business. I was a rodeo cowgirl; I was a rancher’s daughter, and a rodeo brat.

“To get into the music business was scary, leaving all my friends and my family, but I had great people that guided me.

“That was the thing I got out of this whole career – my friends.”

Since then, Reba has sold over 75 million albums, bagged 24 number one country hits and claimed three Grammy Awards.

The music legend is now lending her wealth of knowledge and experience to the next generation of singers on season 28 of NBC’s The Voice.

The I’m a Survivor performer said: “The biggest piece of advice that I like to give any contestant that’s on The Voice is to have fun and make sure you want this as a career because it’s a lot of hard work. It’s a lot of dedication, it’s a lot of commitment, it’s a lot of sacrifices.

“So if you want to be a star, well, you’ve got a long way to go before you become a star.”

Even though Reba – who is engaged to her 68-year-old Happy’s Place co-star Rex Linn – has “no plans” to retire, she does see herself slowing down.

Reba said: “It could be in 20 years. I think I’ll know when it’s the time.

“Dolly [Parton] and I talked about that an awful lot when she did the Reba show, and I said, ‘Are you going to retire?’ She said, ‘Why would I? What in the world could I do and have as much fun as what I’m doing in this job right now?’

“I agree with her a hundred percent. Slow down, maybe, but no plans of retiring.”

We all worry about keeping our homes clean, but some of the dirtiest spots are the ones we least expect. Dr Manan Vora, orthopaedic surgeon and sports and exercise medicine specialist, shares in his September 29 Instagram post, 5 things in your home that are actually dirtier than your toilet seat. “Most people think the toilet seat is the dirtiest thing in the house. But here are 5 everyday items that actually carry more germs,” says Dr Manan.

5 household items hiding most germs

Let’s take a look at his recommendations:

1. TV remote: Passed around with oily, dirty hands and almost never cleaned, the remote control can carry more germs than most expect.

2. Cutting board: Even after washing, leftover food residue can cling to the board and become a hotspot for bacterial growth. Proper drying is essential.

3. Smartphone: Our constant companion, smartphones travel everywhere, including washrooms, public transport, and restaurants, but they are rarely disinfected.

4. Pillow cover: Collecting sweat, drool, and dust night after night, pillow covers need frequent washing to prevent bacteria buildup.

5. Kitchen sponge: Always wet and trapping leftover food particles, kitchen sponges are perfect environments for germs to multiply.

Why regular cleaning matters

“These items look harmless, but can spread illness if ignored. Clean them regularly, your toilet seat might actually be safer,” Dr Manan concludes.

He reminds readers that maintaining a clean home is not just about visible dirt, germs can thrive on everyday objects we interact with constantly. By paying attention to these items, you can reduce the risk of illness and create a healthier living environment.

AIIMS gastroenterologist warns ‘don’t spend more than 10 minutes on toilet’; shares 8 simple tips for healthy gut

Good gut health is more than just smooth digestion, it influences immunity, mood, energy levels, and overall wellness. With so many lifestyle and dietary factors at play, it’s easy for our digestive system to fall out of balance.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi shares tips for maintaining a balanced digestive system.(Freepik)

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, shares in his September 10 Instagram post 7 practical tips to improve gut health and keep your system functioning at its best. (Also read: AIIMS gastroenterologist shares top 10 gut friendly snacks you can have daily: Makhana, sprouted moong chaat, buttermilk )

1. Don’t strain or linger on toilet

Spending more than 10 minutes sitting and pushing can increase the risk of hemorrhoids. About 1 in 20 U.S. adults develops them. If fibre isn’t enough, pelvic floor therapy may help.

2. Know what’s “normal” for you

Healthy bowel habits can range from three times a week to three times a day (Rome IV criteria). The key is comfort, not strict frequency.

3. Go easy on painkillers

Frequent use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin can increase the risk of GI bleeding up to fourfold and damage the gut lining. If you need them often, ask your doctor about safer alternatives.

4. Cut back on sugary drinks and ultra-processed meats

Diets high in processed foods are linked to higher colorectal cancer risk. Switching to a Mediterranean-style diet can lower this risk by about 18%, according to large meta-analyses.

5. Try a bidet

Bidets reduce irritation and are more hygienic than wiping alone, especially helpful for hemorrhoids, fissures, postpartum recovery, or loose stools. Basic attachments start around $50.

6. Eat a bibre-rich, varied diet

The average American consumes roughly 15g of fibre per day, far below the recommended 25–38g. Fibre feeds gut microbes, and once certain species are lost, they may not return.

7. For smelly gas, pepto can help

Bismuth subsalicylate can neutralise over 95% of the sulfide gases that cause odour and also help prevent traveller’s diarrhoea. Use only for short-term relief.

8. Seeds are gut superfoods

Just 1–2 tablespoons of chia, flax, or basil seeds provide soluble fibre and prebiotics that support healthy gut bacteria, reduce bloating, and smooth digestion.
