‘Knees Are a Private Business’: Bill Nighy on Good Trousers, Terrible Advice, and His Love of Knitwear

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

My first introduction to Bill Nighy came via the vaguely lecherous “washed-up pop star” he so expertly plays in the backbone of the British Christmas canon, Love Actually. I was probably (definitely) too young to understand any of the jokes, but since that first fateful viewing, I’ve watched it enough times to recite the script start to finish—a limited-use party trick that’s not particularly enjoyable for whoever’s watching it with me. And, though my repertoire of comfort films has grown, Nighy has remained a constant: whether I’m hysterically crying through About Time or rewatching Emma and Chalet Girl for the millionth time, his unique breed of British stoicism and understated style is always there.

Beyond his extensive acting credits, Nighy has become quietly famous for his no-nonsense opinions on the machinations of life and regular sightings in and around London cafés. Meanwhile, his penchant for clothes has led to a partnership with the heritage knitwear brand John Smedley. The love story between Nighy and Smedley dates back over five decades, though it’s only recently that the actor has stepped out of the role of long-time wearer and into the creative collaborator seat to produce a collection of ’40s-inspired twinsets and long johns, in addition to the merino and cashmere classics.

With its discreet doodles and a “Stay Modern” mantra woven into the collection, Nighy hopes he “hasn’t done anything to disturb the average customer,” adding that “the people who buy John Smedley are pretty committed to the brand, but I’ve committed to crimes.” And for anyone in need of more sage soundbites from the star, you’re in luck: he’s just launched the podcast Ill-Advised by Bill Nighy, which allows listeners to call in for words of wisdom, no matter how trivial. Getting a head start on proceedings, Vogue sat down with Nighy to discuss his mod origins, what makes a decent pair of trousers, and why it’s never acceptable to be sock-less.

bitchy | Princess Kate & Melania Trump’s Scouts event featured terrible fashion & honey

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier today, King Charles and Camilla did a formal “goodbye” to Donald and Melania Trump. Camilla and Melania had their own separate event where Cam showed Mel some stuff from the Windsor library and archives. Then the group of four did their goodbye portraits, and Droopyface Don’s right hand was once again spackled with off-color makeup. Don went off for meetings with Keir Starmer while Melania stayed behind for her event with the Princess of Wales. It’s endlessly amusing to me that Kate was given more responsibility than her husband for this state visit!! Anyway, Kate and Mel met with a Scouts troop in Frogmore Gardens. It apparently went well:

In a historic first, Kate Middleton stepped out on her own without other senior members of the royal family to host first lady Melania Trump for a joint outing.

After Melania toured Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle with Queen Camilla, the first lady joined the Princess of Wales, 43, in Frogmore Gardens. There, they met Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields, and members of the Scouts’ Squirrels program who were learning about nature to achieve their “Go Wild” badge. The women joined a group of 4- to 6-year-olds as the children created artwork. At one table, children pressed inked leaves onto paper, adding illustrations.

“This is beautiful!” the first lady, 55, said as she joined in, filling in a bear outline with a brown marker and adding a sun and grass with yellow and green markers, guided by the children.

Princess Kate sat on the grass nearby, speaking with the children about their art. A small girl took Trump’s hand and led her to another table, where the children were building “bug hotels” from cardboard and tubes.

“Show me how, what I should do,” Trump said. When asked her favorite bug, she replied: “A ladybug.”

Princess Kate and the first lady also joined the children in a lively game with a parachute full of balls, laughing as the kids scrambled underneath to push them out. Kate arranged a special packed lunch for the children, featuring sandwiches made with honey from her Norfolk home at Anmer Hall. Trump contributed her own sweet touch, gifting each child a jar of White House honey.

[From People]

“In a historic first” – they’re just openly lying, because they don’t want to remind everyone of Kate’s 2022 event with Dr. Jill Biden, when Kate made an ass out of herself in like ten different ways. It’s also sad to consider that Kate is a 43-year-old princess who has been in the Firm for fourteen-plus years, and she’s only done “solo events” with first ladies twice in that time.

As for the fashion… Melania looks like she’s doing a “safari” photoshoot for catalogue (not a magazine). Kate looked INSANE. The boots with the skirt with the pussybow blouse with the cropped jacket?? Man, Natasha Archer really was keeping Kate from her worst instincts. Kate absolutely needs to invest in a real stylist, because there’s no reason for her to walk out of the house looking like this.

bitchy | ‘The White Lotus’ received zero Emmys & their fashion was pretty terrible too

In my opinion, The White Lotus’s quality has improved each season. I was meh on the first season, I loved the second season (set in Italy) and it felt like Season 3 became a phenomenon, an increasingly rare water-cooler show where it felt like everyone watched it at the same time. Well, somewhat hilariously, TWL did not win ANY Emmys last night. It came into the awards show as one of the most-nominated dramas! TWL got 23 nominations, the bulk of which were for the actors! And they all canceled each other out. No Emmys for Carrie Coon or Walton Goggins or Parker Posey. It’s kind of bonkers, actually.

So, some fashion photos for The White Lotus cast! Carrie Coon wore Chanel, and I hate all of this. I dislike her pixie cut and the dress is TERRIBLE. Leslie Bibb looked nice in Armani Prive. Aimee Lou Wood wore McQueen, and I’m not into the dress at all – stiff-looking satin, an unflattering cut and she looks like she’s aiming for “quirky” but it came out as “frumpy.” Aimee also avoided Walton Goggins, who was there with his wife (IYKYK), but Aimee brought her boyfriend too. See, take that! Parker Posey wore a wacky custom Valentino which is very… Parker Posey. Michelle Monaghan wore Rabanne Where, kind of disco ball look. And Lisa wore Lever Couture.

bitchy | Telegraph: Princess Kate needs a new home untainted by terrible memories

by jummy84 August 23, 2025
written by jummy84

When we first learned, over the weekend, of the Prince and Princess of Wales’s planned move to Forest Lodge, their office confirmed that they have no plan to ever live in Buckingham Palace. Or Windsor Castle. Or Clarence House. Their “future-planning” for when they are king and queen includes “staying” in Kensington Palace Apt. 1A, plus Forest Lodge, plus Anmer Hall. My reaction was disbelief. Not “disbelief” in the sense that I couldn’t believe their audacity. “Disbelief” in the sense that I do not believe their current claims whatsoever, and I find William and Kate’s office so lacking in credibility, it’s bonkers that anyone really believes anything coming out of their mouths. I think whenever William becomes king, suddenly we’ll be told something else entirely about the family’s living arrangements and plans. But in the meantime, the royal sycophants are falling all over themselves to justify the palace’s talking points. The Telegraph’s Hannah Furness writes, in the newspaper’s Royal Appointment blog, that at least William is being “honest” and upfront. Boot-licker.

Full marks to Prince William for honesty this week. He has made clear that he has no intention of living full time at Buckingham Palace, even when he is King. Controversial, certainly. But there is something refreshing in letting it be known now, upfront, and getting any criticism out of the way. The Waleses and their young family will be moving to Forest Lodge, a large-by-my-standards but small-by-royal-standards home not too far from their current residence Adelaide Cottage. Safe to say it is very on-brand for the Waleses.

They will still be without live-in staff: a Middleton upbringing rather than a Royal one. In a generation to come, the practice of former royal valets, butlers and underfootmen building a second career out of their glimpses of the Royal family in their private quarters will be gone.

The Wales family have been at Adelaide Cottage for three years, although I imagine periods of that must have felt like a lifetime. They have been both very happy and indescribably sad, worried and in pain there. It is not too much of a stretch to imagine how they now associate the property with the most difficult time of their life. Does the Princess look around her and remember the exact place she told her children she had cancer? The bed and sofa where she recovered from chemotherapy, anxious for the future?

The decision to move a short drive away will give the family a chance for a “fresh start and a new chapter”, a source has said, leaving “some of the more unhappy memories behind”. Anyone who has been through personal trauma will understand that instinct on a visceral level.

It leaves a question around Buckingham Palace, although that is not, frankly, a new issue at this point. Monarchy HQ has not been the home of a monarch since before Covid-19, and the King and Queen are happily living at Clarence House while the palace’s long renovation continues. We have been told repeatedly that the intention is for the King to move in eventually but I’m not sure anyone really believes that anymore. Like the old assurances that Camilla would never be known as Queen (the idea, 20 years ago, was that she would be “Princess Consort”), these things move on and the palace hopes that the public gradually gets used to something different.

It is to Prince William’s credit that he is being clear about his plans now. The estimated 775 rooms in Buckingham Palace can be used as offices and staff quarters, to host events, and opened up further to visitors. For tourists, if the palace is an office rather than a home, the old magic of seeing the Royal Standard fly above it and wondering if they might catch a glimpse of the monarch is diminished. But the institution must find a way of retaining it. With £369m having been spent on refurbishing the palace to make it safe and fit for use, the public must understand how it will be used to everyone’s benefit, other than for a few royal “balcony moments” each year. That is a question for the future.

For now, a source says, the Waleses are “looking forward to creating many happy memories in their new home”. After a tricky few years, it doesn’t seem too much to ask.

[From Royal Appointment]

“It is not too much of a stretch to imagine how they now associate the property with the most difficult time of their life. Does the Princess look around her and remember the exact place she told her children she had cancer? The bed and sofa where she recovered from chemotherapy, anxious for the future?” By this rationale, surely they would need a different country home in Norfolk as well, considering Kate spent a good deal of her recovery at Anmer Hall? And what about her parents’ home, Middleton Manor in Bucklebury? Surely they need a new manor house because of all the dreadful memories. Do the kids need to go to a new school as well? That’s the problem with arguing that you need an emotional-support mansion. They really should have used a different rationale. And no, I don’t have to hand it to William for being “honest.” These people have been lying and obfuscating for the past two years (longer than that).

Phoenix Student F@tally $tabbed During Fight At Maryvale High School: ‘Terrible Tragedy’

One student is d*ad following a st*bbing at Maryvale High School in Phoenix on August 19, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Police said they responded around 11:00 a.m. after reports of a f*ght between two male students.

“Officers arrived and learned there was a fight involving two male students,” read part of the police statement. Officials confirmed there are no ongoing thr*ats.

“Parents have been notified by the school, and they request for parents to continue following the school directions for release,” police added.

Arizona Superintendent Tom Horne called the death “a terrible tragedy,” adding, “Schools must be safe places. The on-campus school safety officer responded immediately, rendered aid to the student and did his job well.”

Phoenix Union school board member Jeremiah Cota said, “My thoughts and prayers are with the students, staff, and families.” Councilmember Betty Guardado said she was “heartbroken and deeply disturbed,” stressing that classrooms “should be a safe place for all students.”

Prayers to the victim and their family.
