“All you have to fight your detractors is the art of Kabuki.” GKids has unveiled the official US trailer for an acclaimed Japanese film titled Kokuho, made by filmmaker Sang-il Lee. The title Kokuho means “national treasure” and is inspired by a true story. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in Directors’ Fortnight, and it next plays at AFI Fest in LA this fall before opening in limited US theaters in November. Previously announced as Japan’s entry for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards, the smash-hit live action feature is directed by Sang-il Lee (of “Pachinko” Season 2, Hula Girls, Rage), and stars Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, and Ken Watanabe. The film marks a breakthrough performance for lead actor Ryo Yoshizawa, who trained 18 months in the art and history of Kabuki theater, to embody the role of Kikuo, an actor pursuing greatness at all costs, in a story of glory and heartbreak that spans decades. In post-war Japan’s economic boom, gangster family-born Kikuo finds himself adopted by a kabuki actor. Despite life’s challenges, he develops into a gifted performer. Featuring awe-inspiring scope and beauty, it’s a monument to the artists who would sacrifice everything in the pursuit of the ultimate performance. Enjoy.

Nagasaki, 1964. After the death of his father, leader of a yakuza gang, 14-year-old Kikuo is taken under the wing of a famous Kabuki actor. Alongside Shunsuke, the actor’s only son, Kikuo decides to dedicate himself to this traditional form of theatre. Across decades, the two young men grow and evolve together – from acting school to the grandest stages – amid scandals and glory, brotherhood and betrayals, as each pushes to become the greatest living Kabuki master. Kokuho (which means “national treasure”) is a film of awe-inspiring scope & sumptuous beauty, and a monument to the artists who would sacrifice everything in the pursuit of the ultimate performance. Kokuho is directed by prolific Japanese filmmaker Sang-il Lee, director of the films Chong, Border Line, 69, Hula Girls, Villain, Unforgiven, Rage, The Blue Hearts, The Wandering Moon, and “Pachinko” series previously. The screenplay is written by Satoko Okudera; adapted from the novel by Shûichi Yoshida. Produced by Aniplex Inc. and Myriagon Studio. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. GKids will debut Sang-il Lee’s Kokuho in select US theaters starting November 14th, 2025. “I understand the need to find yourself, find your family… I simply said: Frances, this is your grandpa, Jim. But he thought grandpa sounded too old so he gave himself a new name: Jimpa.” Kismet down in Australia has unveiled the first official trailer for a lovely film about family called Jimpa, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It’s the newest film made by the Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde (following Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and has no US release set yet. Jimpa will have its Australian premiere as the Opening Night film at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival in October. Hannah and her non-binary teenager Frances visits her gay grandfather Jimpa living in Amsterdam. Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather for a year, challenging Hannah’s parenting beliefs and forcing her to confront past issues. Starring John Lithgow as Jimpa, Olivia Colman as Hannah, Aud Mason-Hyde as Frances, with Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Kate Box, and Daniel Henshall. “With warmth, humour and joy, Jimpa reminds us that, in every family, there are stories that don’t add up.” I’m very happy to be quoted in this trailer from my Sundance review. I still think it is a wonderfully warm, tender, worthwhile film… Enjoy.

Jimpa Trailer

Jimpa Trailer

Jimpa is an uplifting multi-generational family story starring favourites Olivia Colman & John Lithgow. Hannah (Colman) travels to vibrant Amsterdam with her non-binary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to reconnect with her politically-engaged, gay father—affectionately known as “Jimpa” (Lithgow). Frances is besotted with Jimpa and announces they wish to stay with him for a year – to Hannah’s apprehension. Jimpa is fiercely independent, so it is a shock when his declining health is revealed, upending Frances’ plans and bringing Hannah’s sister in from the UK. As the siblings negotiate what happens next, Hannah must confront her past & stories she has told about her family. Jimpa is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde, director of the films 52 Tuesdays, Animals, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is written by Sophie Hyde and Matthew Cormack. Produced by Liam Heyen, Bryan Mason, Marleen Slot, Sophie Hyde. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). The film opens first in Australia coming up after playing at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival. No US release is set – expected in early 2026. Who’s interested?
