“I am these kids’ propagandist.” Crazy! Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed, award-winning doc film called Mr Nobody Against Putin, made by director David Borenstein as his latest feature. This documentary premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where it won a Special Jury Prize. A brave and resilient primary school teacher secretly exposes Putin’s aggressive militarisation of Russia’s schools and their propaganda tactics in one of the great documentary sensations of the year. It has played at tons of other festivals including CPH:DOX, Docville, Zurich, DOC:NYC and others. Mr Nobody Against Putin was shot over a period of 2 years by Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, the videographer & events coordinator at Karabash Primary School #1. Talankin began seriously documenting his activities after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, when the government began requiring schools to hold regular “patriotic displays” and use a state-written curriculum to justify the invasion to students. Talankin secretly fled Russia during the summer of 2024, aided by his producers and director David Borenstein who worked to get him asylum in Europe, following evidence of police surveillance at his home. This doc looks excellent.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for David Borenstein’s film Mr Nobody Against Putin, via YouTube:

Pavel “Pasha” Talankin loves his job as a teacher in the small Russian town of Karabash – then Russia invades Ukraine. He is outraged by the new government propaganda in the curriculum, not to mention the school’s being used as a military recruitment ground. In class, Pasha finds ways to playfully protest the regime; more crucially, he becomes a whistleblower – secretly filming the alarming shifts under the guise of his work as school videographer. He risks his life to send the footage overseas to filmmaker David Borenstein – while also planning his own escape. Mr Nobody Against Putin is directed by international doc filmmaker David Borenstein, also director of the films Dream Empire and Can’t Feel Nothing, plus a few other series and short film. It’s produced by Helle Faber. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won a Special Jury Prize. No final release date is set yet – still playing at more festivals and beyond. Expected to open in early 2026 in US theaters. Anyone interested in watching?

Teacher Shot By 6-Year-Old Receives $10M Payout

Y’all… school drama just hit different. Abby Zwerner, the teacher shot by a 6-year-old student at Richneck Elementary in 2023, just scored a $10 million civil win against ex-assistant principal Ebony Parker. And now, all eyes are on Parker’s upcoming criminal trial.

Zwerner’s Pain Earns $10M Jury Award

In January 2023, Abby Zwerner was shot while teaching at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. In her civil suit, she accused then-assistant principal Ebony Parker of ignoring multiple warnings. She allegedly ignored that the student had a firearm and failed to allow staff to search him before the shooting.

During the trial, Zwerner detailed how the bullet wounds to her chest and hand continue to impact her daily life. The jury clearly responded to her testimony, awarding her a substantial payout. Though it was only a portion of the $40 million she initially sought. Legal experts noted that the civil verdict won’t automatically be admitted in Parker’s upcoming criminal trial. However, it could give prosecutors added leverage as Parker faces eight felony counts of child neglect later this month.

Civil Win Could Influence Parker’s Upcoming Criminal Trial

The criminal trial, set to start on November 17, will focus on whether Parker ignored clear warnings that the child had a gun at school. Experts say prosecutors have a higher bar to clear — proving guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt” — but Zwerner’s civil win may push Parker toward plea negotiations, especially given the significant prison time she could face if convicted. Observers say this unusual sequencing — civil trial before criminal — gives both sides a preview of the arguments and evidence likely to pop up in court.

Strong Reactions As Zwerner’s Civil Verdict Shakes Schools

Reactions outside the courthouse were strong, with Zwerner’s lawyers stressing the importance of school safety. “I think (the verdict) says that what happened at Richneck Elementary School that day was wrong and is not going to be tolerated,” Diane Toscano said. Parker’s team is expected to appeal the verdict. Still, with the civil jury siding with Zwerner, the legal battle is far from over. And the upcoming criminal trial is now one of the most closely watched cases on school safety and accountability in the country. To note, Deja Taylor, the mother of the child in this case, is even serving time behind bars for her son’s actions.

“You’re not alone, Shy… That’s the whole point.” Netflix has debuted one more final official trailer for the film titled Steve, from the same Belgian filmmaker, Tim Mielants, behind Cillian’s last film Small Things Like These. Steve is now playing on Netflix as of today (view it here) – after premiering at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival last month to mostly positive reviews. The film follows the headteacher Steve battling for his reform college’s survival while managing his mental health & other challenges. Concurrently, the troubled student Shy navigates his violent tendencies and fragility, torn between his past and his future prospects. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular teacher Steve, with a cast including Tracey Ullman, Jay Lycurgo, Simbi Ajikawo, Emily Watson, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, and others. The film features music by Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow. Adapted from Max Porter’s book “Shy”: a story “about guilt, rage, imagination, & boyhood, about being lost in the dark and learning you’re not alone.” This is a much better trailer and really makes me want to watch this. A compassionate, honest film. Worth a look.

You can rewatch the first official trailer for Tim Mielants’ Steve movie right here for even more footage.

Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence. Steve is directed by Belgian filmmaker Tim Mielants, director of the films Patrick Will, and Small Things Like These previously, plus short films & TV work including episode of “Legion”, “Tales from the Loop” and “The Responder” recently. The screenplay is written by Max Porter, adapted from his own bestselling novel titled “Shy”. It’s produced by Alan Moloney, Cillian Murphy, and Tina Pawlik. This will premiere at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival this fall. Netflix will then debut Meilants’ Steve film opening in select US theaters on September 19th, 2025, then streaming on Netflix starting October 3rd coming up this fall. Look any good? Who wants to watch?
