bitchy | Target’s new policy requires employees to smile, wave & talk to nearby customers

Almost immediately after his term started, the 47th president issued executive orders to end all federal DEI-related initiatives. He also pressured/encouraged businesses to roll back or end their own diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Target was one of the big corporations to capitulate and immediately announced that they would be ending their DEI policies and REACH (Racial Equity Action and Change) initiative. Consumers, especially Black consumers, felt betrayed and responded with their wallets. By August, Target reported a 19% decrease in profits and a huge devaluation of their stock price. As a result, their CEO announced that he’d be stepping down at the end of January 2026.

We’re entering the holiday shopping season and Target is desperate to get customers back into their stores. So, they’ve come up with a new policy they think will do the trick. They are going to bring people back by killing them with kindness! The new policy, called “10-4” mandates that if an employee is within 10 feet of a customer, they have to smile and wave. If they’re within four feet, then they have to smile and talk with the shopper.

Target customers will soon see more smiles and maybe even exchange more pleasantries with employees, thanks to a new staff policy the retailer has implemented, the company said.

The new policy requires employees who are within 10 feet of customers to smile, make eye contact, wave, and use friendly, approachable, and welcoming body language, the Minneapolis-based retailer told USA TODAY on Monday, Nov. 10.

If staff members are within 4 feet of customers, they must personally greet the guests, smile, and initiate a warm, helpful interaction, Target said. The requirements are part of a program called 10-4. The program is one way Target is trying to elevate the shopping experience, the company told USA TODAY. Target said the company wants to make sure customers truly feel like guests who are appreciated.

Adrienne Costanzo, Target’s executive vice president and chief stores officer, said the company has done a great job so far in creating a good in-store experience for customers.

“We know when our guests are greeted, feel welcomed and get the help they need that translates to guest love and loyalty,” Costanzo said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Heading into the holiday, we’re making adjustments and implementing new ways to increase connection during the most important time of the year powered by our team.”

The company did not say when the policy will go into effect, or whether employees will be reprimanded if they don’t abide by the policy.

Target said the new policy also aligns with incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke’s goals for the company…The company said he has advocated for investments into pay and benefits for the company’s team members.

Some Target employees took to Reddit to express their opinions about the policy, with some noting that they should be greeting customers anyway.

“Kinda what we’re (supposed) to be doing anyway, but still,” wrote Reddit user Ziglet_249. “I truly believe I promoted myself to guest at just the right time. Yesterday was my last day in the system, I am officially (retired).”

Another user, Odd-Face-3579, suggested the reason for the policy is because Target employees aren’t smiling enough on their own due to what it’s like working there.

“The problem isn’t that it’s a job requirement to smile (though the forced verbal greeting at 4 feet is a problem if you ask me.) The problem is that if your employees aren’t smiling at guests, it’s probably because your employees are wildly unhappy. If you fixed things for your employees to be happy, you probably wouldn’t need to announce a new plan mandating happiness,” Odd-Face-3579 wrote.

So, they’re forcing employees to talk and smile more in order to make shoppers feel appreciated? Of course it’s always nice to get a friendly little smile and nod from someone when you walk by. It brightens my day and I try to do it to other people if we make eye contact in an aisle. But when I go shopping I don’t need or expect workers to interact with me if the situation doesn’t call for it. If I need to know where something is, I’ll politely ask for help. Most of the time, people are friendly and happy to point me in the right direction.

Target has completely missed the point here. People stopped shopping there because they capitulated to the president’s and his administration’s bigoted demands. They betrayed loyal customers. You know what makes shoppers feel welcome at your store? Not donating one million dollars to a wannabe authoritarian’s inauguration and then showing whole communities that they weren’t that important to you after all. If Target wants shoppers to end their boycott, they have to earn that trust back (if it isn’t too late). They can start by recommitting themselves to their DEI initiatives and working with Black-owned businesses again.

ITV Targets Extra $46M In Cost Savings Amid “Softening Economy”

UK network ITV is planning to save another £35M ($45.7M) in the coming quarter, despite posting steady year-to-date group revenues.

In a Q3 trading update, the broadcaster and content group said it had identified the additional temporary savings” in its Media & Entertainment division, which houses its linear networks and streamer ITVX.

“UK macro data is showing a softening economy, with increased uncertainty in the lead up to the UK Budget which is impacting the wider advertising market, and we are adjusting our costs to match this current reduction in demand,” said ITV CEO Carolyn McCall in a trading update today. “We do not anticipate these temporary savings to impact our ability to deliver our strategic plan.”

The plan is to move £20M of programming will be moved into 2026 and make an additional £15M of non-content savings, primarily through “reduced discretionary spend” and “reduced marketing spend aligned with the adjusted content slate.” The move means ITV’s total content budget for 2025 is adjusted to around £1.21B.

Overall total year-to-date group revenues for the nine months to end-September at ITV were £2.8B, up 2% from £2.74B a year ago. A strong performance at production and sales division ITV Studios was hailed for offsetting an anticipated drop of 9% in total advertising revenue.

For the full year, ITV said it was “on track to deliver good revenue growth in ITV Studios at a margin of 13-15%,” while warning the “economic outlook in the UK remains uncertain with widespread caution being exercised across business sectors ahead of the Budget in November.”

ITV Studios revenue came in at £1.35B, up 11% on the £1.22B in 2024, with external revenue up 20% thanks to demand for programs from streamers. During the quarter, ITV Studios launched the likes of The Reluctant Traveler Season 3 for Apple TV and Love Island Games for Peacock.

However, internal revenues dropped 7% due to the absence of shows such as Saturday Night Takeaway, sports production and phasing of productions.

The M&E networks arm saw total revenue fall 5% to £1.44B, though digital advertising revenue was up 15% as ITVX viewing grew total streamed hours by 14%. Overall digital revenues were up 13%.

ITV said its overall performance for the nine months to the end of September had been “better than market expectations” thanks to its long-term More Than TV strategy. Full-year revenue and margin outlooks remain unchanged.

“ITV has delivered a good performance in a tough advertising market,” said McCall. “Both our businesses are performing well, reflecting the significant transformation we have delivered. Our strategic initiatives continue to progress well, and we remain confident in delivering good growth in ITV Studios revenue and digital revenue for the full year. This is supported by laser-focused strategic cost management and underpinned by our resilient and highly cash generative linear broadcast business.”

Green Events Code of Practice updated to drive clear and bold sector commitments and targets

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

The national Green Events Code of Practice (GECoP) has been updated to provide a clear, robust, and nationally consistent framework for event organisers, local authorities, and the supply chain. The revised code reflects current best practices and aligns with national policy, aiming to help the UK live events sector achieve ambitious environmental targets.

The GECoP is published by Vision for Sustainable Events, with the review chaired by LIVE Green. It was supported by a working group that included event sustainability experts—specifically A Greener Future, Creative Zero, and Hope Solutions—as well as event promoters Festival Republic and AEG.

Following a successful 2024 pilot with 10 local authorities focused on integrating the code into their processes, the updated GECoP will be adopted by more than 20 UK cities in 2025. This expansion is the next step toward a national roll-out, ultimately aiming to provide an off-the-shelf framework and baseline for nationally consistent event assessment.

Chris Johnson, Chair of the Vision for Sustainable Events Forum, comments:

“Fundamentally, the Green Code aims to answer the question, ‘What does good look like?’ This refresh brings the code up to date, providing clarity for the sector on best practice and on the action we need to take to achieve meaningful reductions in the environmental impacts of events.”

GECoP is intended to establish a common understanding of best practice, offering clear and robust minimum standards that can be assessed to achieve national consistency. The updated code articulates the sector’s continued commitment to achieving a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. It also emphasises the industry’s role as a driver of wider societal change.

Targets for energy have been strengthened in this second version, now including a 100% reduction in onsite fossil fuel consumption at live events by 2030. This aligns with wider creative, TV, and film industry commitments. HVO fuel is acknowledged as a transitional bridge where electric or green hydrogen solutions cannot yet meet power needs.
