Did you know babies don’t sweat much? Physician explains why excessive sweating could be a sign of chronic heart disease

Did you know that babies don’t actually sweat much? Unlike adults, their tiny bodies regulate temperature differently because their sweat glands are still developing. So, if your baby seems to sweat frequently or excessively, it might signal something more than just warmth or activity.

Dr Sermed Mezher, a family medicine physician and health content creator based out of England, shared the interesting fact that babies rarely sweat – and when they do excessively, it could be a cause for concern. In an Instagram video posted on October 27, the physician reacts to a clip of a woman showing her sweaty baby and explains that such excessive sweating may indicate an underlying medical condition.

Should babies sweat?

Dr Mezher explains that babies typically don’t sweat much because their sweat glands are still immature and not yet fully developed. In fact, the physician notes that babies are more likely to experience dry skin than excessive sweating.

He elaborates, “Instead, infants rely more on other mechanisms – like increased blood flow to the skin or changes in body position – to regulate their temperature. Because of this, mild warmth or activity usually doesn’t cause a baby to sweat noticeably.”

When to worry

Dr Mezher warns that persistent or uncontrollable sweating, especially while feeding or sleeping, is not normal, and can be a sign of chronic disease. Possible causes could be linked to heart problems, infections, metabolic or endocrine disorders. He points out, “That could include things like excessive production of thyroid hormone. It can also be an early sign of congenital heart disease for which they are coping for now, but sometimes a stressor can actually change that.”

Moreover, according to the physician, patients with cystic fibrosis can also experience excessive sweating as newborns. He explains, “This is associated with recurrent respiratory infections because of a mutation in the CFTR gene. This mutation changes how salts are secreted in the body leading to thick secretions that are tough to get rid of.”

Celebrity Trainer Harley Pasternak Reveals How the Right Outfit Can Enhance Your Sweat Sessions

Fashion meets fitness! Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak sat down with ET to share simple ways to take your workouts to the next level, and surprisingly, it all starts with your outfit.

The fitness guru, whose star-studded roster includes Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Megan Fox, Adele, and Katy Perry revealed how the right wardrobe can work out with you while celebrating the opening of Vuori Studio by Harley Pasternak in Los Angeles, California.

“Vuori Studio is designed to be a fully immersive and elevated experience,” he says. “It’s a private, VIP training and recovery space where my clients, brand partners, and athletes can come to move, recharge, and feel their best. We’ve integrated best-in-class equipment with their innovative apparel, so it’s more than just working out.”

And, according to Pasternak, your ‘fit can fuel your fitness from the moment you step into the space.

“What you wear impacts how you move and how you feel. … When you feel good in your clothes and they fit right, move with you, and reflect your personal style it shows. You walk into a gym with a different mindset.”

His go-to brand? Vuori. “It’s performance-driven but also designed to make you feel confident and powerful. That alone can help push you to give more.”

Sporting proper attire also allows Pasternak to teach his A-list approved technique — rooted in science and sustainability — to the fullest extent.

“Great apparel helps you focus on the work, not what you’re wearing. … It gives you the flexibility and support you need during a workout, without distraction,” The Carb Reset author explains.

But your wardrobe is just the beginning. For Pasternak, lasting results come down to healthy habits woven into your daily grind.

Vuori

“Whether you’re on a movie set, or behind a desk, it’s about building routines that enhance your life, not overwhelm it. … My clients are busy, often traveling, and need programs that are effective, but realistic. I give them the tools to stay healthy no matter where they are or how full their schedule gets,” he notes.

Some of those strategies include walking every day, eating balanced meals, and prioritizing sleep.

“What you do between workouts often matters more than the workout itself. … It’s usually the small things, done consistently, that create the biggest changes,” the nutritionist notes.

“Getting outside and moving regularly, using the PATH method (Palm of carbs, All the veggies, Thumb of fat, Hand of protein), and staying off your phone before bed can do more than any fancy trend,” the public speaker shares.

Weather changes and pollution can take a serious toll on your skin, triggering pimples, acne, and flare-ups. The good news? With the right protection strategies, you can shield your skin from pollutants, sweat, and breakouts effectively. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ameesha Mahajan, cosmetic dermatologist and founder, Eden Skin Clinic shared a few tips to protect your skin daily. Cloudy or sunny days, sunscreen is a must.(Shutterstock)

1. Face cleansing twice a day

Cleanser used should be gentle and have a balanced pH. Use it twice a day and if you sweat profusely, such as after workouts. After sweating or exposure to environmental pollutants, cleansing must remove the bacteria.

2. Regular and gentle skin exfoliation

Skin exfoliation should be practiced with gentle exfoliants once or twice a week to unclog the skin pores. Harsh scrubs are a big no as they damage the skin’s protective barrier and cause more acne flare ups.

3. Anti-pollution care

Use an antioxidant loaded serum on your face as it helps to fight free radicals such as vitamin C and niacinamide. These ingredients are helpful to fight premature aging and dull skin.

4. Daily skin moisturisation, irrespective of skin type

Even oily skin needs hydration. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Moisturisers protect the skin barrier, keeping dirt and pollutants from penetrating.

5. Sunscreen 365 days a year

Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even indoors. Pollution can worsen sun damage, so sunscreen acts as your first line of defense. Also read | Can’t quit screen time? Here’s the skincare routine you need to protect your skin against blue light damage

6. Managing stress

Pat sweat off instead of rubbing to prevent irritation and clogged pores. Use breathable fabrics and avoid heavy creams that trap sweat.

7. Refrain from touching face with dirty hands

Hands carry bacteria and pollutants. Touching your face increases the risk of pimples. Keep phones, masks, and glasses clean to prevent skin transfer.

8. Lifestyle modifications

Stay hydrated to flush out toxins. Include a diet rich in antioxidants, fruits, and vegetables to support skin health. Get 7–8 hours of sleep to allow skin repair overnight.

9. Acne management

On the acne spots, consider applying salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or niacinamide based serums or other skincare products. Don’t pick or touch acne as it worsens inflammation and may even lead to scarring. Also read | What is ‘skin zoning’ and does it really work? 10. Regular skin check-ins

See the changes your skin shows with changing weather or after sweating. Shift your skincare products as per the season and consult a dermatologist in case of repeated acne flare-ups.
