Sydney Sweeney on Trump’s Reaction to Her American Eagle Ad: ‘It Was Surreal’

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Over the past year, Sydney Sweeney has starred in two movies and a TV show, and filmed season three of one of the buzziest TV shows of the decade. But it’s her personal life that’s become something of a national obsession. In May, she confirmed she had ended her engagement with her fiancé, Jonathan Davino; around the same time, she released a controversial, limited-edition batch of soaps allegedly made up of her bathwater in collaboration with the men’s brand Dr. Squatch; then, in August, she starred in an ad campaign for American Eagle ad which ignited a national debate.

In the wake of the discourse, the 28-year-old did not address the backlash directly. Instead, social media commentators led the charge—including President Donald Trump. On August 4, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Sweeney had “the hottest ad out there,” and then went on to declare that “being WOKE is for losers,” among other strange claims.

Now, in an interview for GQ’s Men of the Year issue, Sweeney has finally addressed the reactions to the ad, as well as her thoughts on the president’s statement. “It was surreal,” Sweeney said when asked about Trump’s post.

As for the backlash itself, Sweeney said, “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”

She went on to say that she wasn’t paying much attention to the discourse at its height because she was working such long hours filming Euphoria. “I wasn’t thinking of it like that, of any of it,” she explained. “I kind of just put my phone away. I was filming every day. I’m filming Euphoria, so I’m working 16-hour days and I don’t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn’t really see a lot of it.”

As a refresher, in the ad, Sweeney referenced Brooke Shields’s controversial 1980 Calvin Klein jeans ad with a monologue about genes. The campaign tag line for Sweeney’s American Eagle collaboration was “My jeans are blue.” On social media, some claimed that Sweeney, who has stayed mum on her political affiliations for her entire career but is rumored to be a registered Republican, was signaling a belief in the superiority of her genes, specifically blue eyes. The reaction, and then the reaction to the reaction, quickly snowballed on social media and beyond, becoming something of a litmus test for one’s progressive or conservative bonafides.

Kartik Aaryan reacts to winning Best Actor awards for both Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Chandu Champion in 2025: It’s surreal…

by jummy84 October 29, 2025

For Kartik Aaryan, 2025 will always remain one of his most special years, with big film announcements one after the other, and of course, his Best Actor wins: IIFA for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Filmfare for Chandu Champion, both 2024 releases. As HT City catches up with him, the confidence shines through, in both his choices and ambition:

Kartik Aaryan

Winning your first-ever Filmfare Best Actor award for Chandu Champion – for a new-generation star like you, did the film feel like an ‘experiment,’ and was the win a vindication of sorts?

Honestly, I didn’t look at Chandu Champion as an experiment at all. The moment I heard the story of (India’s first paralympic gold medallist) Murlikant Petkar ji, I was surprised and deeply moved. I felt this was a story of incredible resilience, courage, and self belief; one every Indian should know. I could totally relate to his story and considered myself truly blessed to get the opportunity to portray such an inspirational real-life hero on screen. I will always be indebted to Kabir (Khan, director) sir and Sajid (Nadiadwala, producer) sir for trusting me with this incredible story. Winning the Filmfare Best Actor award feels like a huge validation, not just for me but for the kind of cinema that celebrates real stories and the human spirit.

Is Chatori (your newest pup) a present you have given to yourself for your Chandu Champion win?

(Laughs) Yes, you can say that! Chatori is actually a gift from my mom, and she’s already become everyone’s favourite at home. Bas Katori thodi si insecure ho gayi hai! Abhi tak donon ki dosti nahin hui hai. But still, Katori is very protective of Chatori like a big sister. The house feels livelier with both of them around.

We celebrated Diwali recently, and one is reminded of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 last year, which pretty much set the benchmark for Diwali releases. Do big box office numbers feel like a responsibility, or add pressure?

The love the audience showered on Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was overwhelming, it felt like a festival inside theatres. The film released alongside another massive franchise, and there was immense anticipation among the audience, trade, and media for both. Together, the two films did a combined business of over ₹800 crores worldwide (BB3 – ₹423.85 cr, Singham Returns – ₹389.64 cr). That year, Diwali genuinely felt like Diwali for the entire industry.

For me, these big box office numbers are very motivating, but more than pressure, I see it as a responsibility, to keep entertaining the audience and living up to their expectations. At the same time, I try not to let the numbers dictate my choices. For me, it’s always about the story and the connection it creates with the audience. If that works, everything else follows.

Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri is set for a New Year eve release. How was it reuniting with (actor) Ananya Panday?

The film has shaped up beautifully, it’s got that perfect mix of heart, fun, and festive energy. We had a blast shooting it, and that vibe translates on screen. Reuniting with Ananya was like picking up where we left off, she was a total live-wire on set. She’s going to surprise everyone. I’m sure the audience will enjoy our chemistry in this fun, refreshing rom-com as Ray-Rumi and all the masti the film brings.

Would you call rom-com ‘your’ genre, given your successful track record in them?

Rom-coms come to me quite naturally, maybe they’re just in my DNA (laughs). I guess the audience also enjoys seeing me in such roles, which makes it more special. But I never want to be confined to one genre. I love exploring different kinds of stories and characters. At the end of the day, I go by what truly connects with me, a story that moves me and one that will entertain the audience, no matter what the genre is.

One hears that you don’t limit yourself to just acting, you get involved in marketing too. There’s even a ‘Kartik Aaryan template’ now. Where did this streak come from?

I think I’m also a bit of a businessman at heart (smiles). For me, it’s equally important to market a film in the best possible way. Today, storytelling doesn’t end with the shoot, how you present it to the audience matters just as much. So I like being involved in all aspects of film making. Thankfully, my producers have been welcoming and yes, even I have heard about the ‘Kartik Aaryan template’ being discussed at films marketing meetings! Trust me, its really encouraging.

Rosalía Gets Surreal In ‘Berghain’ Video

by jummy84 October 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Rosalía delivers a stunning first sample from her upcoming Columbia album, LUX, in the form of the Nicolás Méndez-directed, Warsaw-set video for “Berghain,” which features vocals from Björk and Yves Tumor.

In the highly surreal clip, Rosalía is enveloped first by orchestra musicians and then a menagerie of animals as she moves from her apartment to a crowded bus, a jewelry store and a doctor’s office. The track is described by Columbia as “the grand orchestral centerpiece” of the upcoming project’s second movement — “an operatic journey across languages and emotion” that “expands from soft introspection to sweeping cinematic power.”

LUX will be released Nov. 7. It was recorded with the London Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Daníel Bjarnason and features such vocalists as Carminho, Estrella Morente, Silvia Pérez Cruz, the Escolania de Montserrat i Cor Cambra Palau de la Música Catalana and Yahritza.

The album will feature three exclusive tracks on its CD and vinyl editions, which can be pre-ordered here. It’s the followup to 2022’s MOTOMAMI, which topped charts in Spain and Portugal and reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Latin Pop Albums chart.

The Surreal Disney Cartoon That Inspired Fever Dream Episodes of ‘Futurama’ & ‘Ted Lasso’

by jummy84 September 16, 2025

In 1950, Disney released an educational short titled Donald in Mathmagic Land, a 27-minute animated featurette in which the infamous belligerent duck with a speech impediment visits a surreal world filled with geometric shapes, numbers, and puzzles. Adorable, eye-catching, and credited for making mathematics accessible to generations of children, the toon is recognized for inspiring many future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers… and apparently TV writers, as it was used as the massive inspiration for both Futurama and Ted Lasso.

Guided by a disembodied narrator (voiced by Paul Frees, a.k.a. The Ghost Host for all you Disney adults out there), Donald in Mathmagic Land was much more than just a cartoon about math. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), and Walt Disney himself called it “the most interesting film we have ever made” in terms of educational value. More importantly, the brilliant mix of classic Disney animation, abstract design, and colorful visuals made it incredibly memorable.

In 1961, it became the first Disney cartoon ever televised in color as the premiere episode of The Wonderful World of Color, and it often played in syndication for generations, allowing audiences to watch and absorb its trippy, dippy lessons in geometry.

Is it any wonder it got a wink from the writers of Ted Lasso and Futurama, who can’t resist raiding pop culture’s attic for inspiration?

In Season 3 Episode 6 of Ted Lasso (“Sunflowers”), Ted (Jason Sudeikis) finds himself in an American-themed sports bar in Amsterdam while high on mushrooms (as one does). As he sits watching an old basketball game he once shared with his father, a disembodied voice calling itself “The True Spirit of Adventure” (voiced by Corey Burton), who materializes and offers him advice on triangles, inspiring him to try “Total Football” with his players.

It’s no coincidence that this shares the name of the narrator in Donald in Mathmagic Land, who guides Donald through his lessons in spatial design. In addition to the name connection, just as the Disney waterfowl was guided by Frees, a popular Disney voice actor, Lasso is guided by Corey Burton, the voice of Captain Hook, Ludwig Von Drake, Dale, the Mad Hatter, and other iconic Disney characters.

Pretty neat, right? It gets better.

That takes us to Season 13 of Futurama, a show that is no stranger to satirizing pop culture references, no matter how obscure. Given the extraordinarily high level of mad genius on the writing staff, many of whom hold PhDs from Ivy League universities, it makes sense that many of the gags would be peppered with ambiguous references such as puns on architect Buckminster Fuller and the P vs NP problem in computational complexity theory, nods to Toad the Wet Sprocket, or visual sight gags to ELO’s Out of the Blue album cover, just to name a few.

In the episode, ‘The Numberland Gap,” the gang travels to a mysterious world inhabited by numbers after receiving a numbered message through Bender’s (John DiMaggio) AM radio that led to an encoded plan in a paint-by-numbers painting. After Amy (Lauren Tom) builds the machine that transports the crew to the abstract world of Numberland, where the Professor (Billy West) meets a captive Georg Cantor and thus begins a dazzling carnival of clever, calculated quips.

It also features Danica McKellar as a head in a jar! From The Wonder Years! A truly whackadoo episode that only the brilliant maniacs over at Futurama can cook up.

“It’s a very experimental episode,” said showrunner and writer David X. Cohen. “So that is one of the most interesting episodes of the year. It’s called ‘The Numberland Gap,’ but it was inspired at Matt Groening’s suggestion by this old Disney cartoon, Donald in Mathmagic Land, where Donald Duck creeps through this land of numbers and has adventures. And he wanted us to do a version of that, but with more actual math in it, as opposed to vague references to how math is important to architecture.

“He said, ‘You guys do something like that, but with real math,’” recalled Cohen. “It sounds kind of hard, but we’re up for the challenge. So our crew goes into a land inhabited entirely by numbers.”

“There’s some really spectacular 3D graphics, I have to say, in the two done by our studio, Rough Draft Studios and Scott Vanzo, the 3D director there,” continued Cohen. “I’m very pleased with how it came out. But I’m particularly curious because it’s a wacko episode.”

“So it’s an exceptionally abstract episode, but I think we worked extra hard on it for that reason, and came out pretty funny, and there’s some math in it, but you don’t have to know the math to appreciate it. But for those who do know the math, I think it’ll be an extra treat.”

In the end, Donald in Mathmagic Land didn’t just teach kids about geometry; it also taught TV writers how to turn math into comedy gold and how to find magic and humor in treasures from our shared pop culture past.

Inside the Surreal Final Days Before Princess Diana’s Death

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

So, Diana took her friend, Egyptian business magnate and Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, up on his longstanding invitation to host her, along with William and Harry, at his vacation home in Saint-Tropez.

Dodi Fayed, Mohamed’s eldest son, showed up on July 14, a few days into the princess’ stay, docking his boat near his father’s yacht, the Jonikal. The 42-year-old movie producer was accompanied by his model fiancée Kelly Fisher, though Dodi would later deny that they were engaged.

Mohamed, who used to arrange private shopping excursions for the princess at his famed London department store after it had closed for the evening, was excited by the prospect of a love connection between Diana and his son.

Kelly left for work on July 18 and Dodi started spending more time with Diana and her sons, renting out a nightclub so they could dance in peace and taking the trio to an amusement park.

Diana called it the “best holiday of my life,” per Morton.

But in light of the tragic news, after dropping the boys back home in the U.K. she flew to Milan to attend the July 22 funeral for Versace.
