What Sunjay’s mother claimed

As per the latest update shared by news agency PTI, the Delhi High Court on Monday heard allegations from Rani S Kapur. She said she was never told about her son’s will. The submissions were made before Justice Jyoti Singh during the hearing of a suit of Karisma Kapoor’s children. The court listed the matter for further arguments on December 3.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Rani, said that marital discord between Sunjay and Priya started in May 2023 and there were constant fights. The plea read that it was “highly unlikely and improbable that Sunjay would make Priya the sole beneficiary of his personal estate”. It went on to add that her late son shared “a deep bond and equal affection with all his children, his mother and other members of the Kapur family”. Furthermore, Gaggar claimed that instead of grieving Sunjay’s death, Priya made every possible move to take control of his assets, and alleged that the daughter-in-law concealed massive assets belonging to him.

Sunjay Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading auto parts manufacturer. He died in June in London while playing a polo match. Sunjay was married to Karisma from 2003 to 2016, and they had two children together. He married Priya in 2017.

The case around late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s estate was heard at the Delhi High Court on Monday, with the lawyer of Sunjay and Karisma Kapoor’s children making fiery allegations against their step mother and Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev.

Samara and Kiaan slam Priya Sachdev in court

Samara and Kiaan, the children of Sunjay with his second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, have sued their father’s third wide Priya Sachdev accusing her of forging their late father’s will and excluding them from his estate.

On Monday, appearing for Kiaan and Samara, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani said that the will in question, has glaring errors and ‘blunders’, which implies that ‘it is not a will which Sunjay Kapur had prepared, read or made’. The errors included spelling Kiaan’s name incorrectly and getting Samara’s address wrong.

“He had a very good relationship with his children. How can he have written his daughter’s address wrong and misspelled his son’s name in multiple places in the will? This will demeans the late Sunjay Kapoor. It is so casual,” Jethmalani said, on behalf of Samara and Kiaan.

‘Only one person could have forged the will’

Karisma Kapoor is representing her kids in the case even though she is not a plaintiff herself. Appearing on behalf of the children, the counsel said that there was no evidence that anybody prepared the will except the children’s stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur. “This can only be done by the beneficiary of the will, to prevent any challenges. Only one person was given the benefits. If this will is a forgery, then only one person could have forged it,” he said. The court will continue hearing the matter tomorrow.

Sunjay Kapur estate case

Earlier, on October 9, Samara and Kiaan had accused Priya of being greedy, describing her as “Cinderella’s evil stepmother” before the court. Before that, the court, on September 26, allowed Priya Kapur to file the list of his assets in a sealed cover and suggested that the parties involved in the property dispute not share details with the media.

Sunjay Kapur, head of Sona Comstar, one of the world’s leading auto manufacturers, died in London in June. His death was ruled a heart attack. Sunjay was married to Karisma from 2003-16, and later married Priya in 2017.

The Court refused to accommodate Priya Kapur’s plea to impose a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) or confidentiality clause on the heirs before allowing them access to Sunjay’s Will and list of assets. During the hearing, the court orally said that it will not pass an order for the confidentiality club after the counsel agreed not to disclose the contents of the list of assets, as well as information regarding the case, to the media.

Delhi HC Backs Karisma Kapoor’s Children Samaira, Kiaan

Justice Jyoti Singh was unequivocal in her stance, observing that such a condition could deprive the children of their right to defend themselves. “If they are bound by confidentiality, how will they ever defend their case?” the judge asked in court.

By the end of the week, Priya — Sunjay’s third wife — had stepped back from her NDA push. Instead, she agreed to submit documents in a sealed cover, a judicial mechanism that prevents public disclosure while ensuring full access for family members. For Karisma’s kids, this means they can freely examine and contest the Will, which they have already denounced as “bogus.”

Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for Samaira and Kiaan, strongly criticised Priya’s position. “Two accounts have been wiped clean and 6% share appropriated. For me, there is nothing confidential. What is there to hide?” he argued before the bench.

Legal experts say this is a significant moment. Akshat Khetan, Founder of AU Corporate Advisory & Legal Services, observed: “The Court has struck the right balance, sensitive details need not enter the public domain, but heirs cannot be kept in the dark. By allowing sealed cover filings while rejecting Priya Kapur’s NDA demand, the Delhi High Court reaffirmed that heirs have the right to know what constitutes their father’s estate without involving the media unnecessarily.”

Sujit Lahoti, Managing Partner at Sujit Lahoti & Associates, added: “Inheritance disputes cannot be run like boardroom negotiations. Delhi High Court made it plain that heirs must be able to question every disclosure. NDAs in succession cases would be legally unsound and practically unworkable.”

What Did The HC Direct?

The Court has now directed Priya Kapur to file a comprehensive inventory of Sunjay Kapur’s movable and immovable assets. These details are to be shared with Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, and his children — but kept out of the public domain. Importantly, the judge ruled out Priya’s bid to form a so-called “confidentiality club,” calling it an unfamiliar and inappropriate tool in Indian succession disputes.

The ruling strengthens the position of Karisma Kapoor’s children, who continue to question the authenticity of the Will and allege financial misappropriation by Priya. At its core, the decision underscores a broader principle: inheritance battles demand transparency, not secrecy. And in this high-profile family feud, the Delhi High Court has ensured that Karisma’s children will have their full say in the fight for their father’s legacy.

Karisma focuses on her work

The dispute over Sunjay’s vast ₹30,000 crore estate has escalated, with his children Samaira and Kiaan, from his marriage to Karisma, accusing Sunjay’s widow and third wife Priya Sachdev of forging his will and excluding them from the inheritance. On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court took up the plea filed by Samaira and Kiaan, where several allegations and accusations were made. Karisma is not a plaintiff in the case, but is representing her children.

Amid all the chatter, we have heard Karisma is focusing on her work. “At the moment, Karisma is in Mumbai and totally focused on her work. She is not letting the controversy surrounding her ex-husband Sunjay Kapur’s estate impact her professional life,” says a source.

The insider continues, “Karisma is fulfilling her professional commitment as usual. She is shooting for several projects. She was recently seen in Super Dancer Chapter 5 as a special guest, and even travelled for an event. And she intends to continue to do that. Because the show must go on.”

Sunjay Kapur was married to Karisma from 2003 to 2016. Their children, Samaira and Kiaan, were born in 2005 and 2011, respectively. Sunjay married Priya Sachdev in 2017 after a bitter divorce from Karisma.

The businessman, who was the chairman and founder of auto manufacturer Sona Comstar, died in June in London after a purported heart attack. Reports say his estate is worth ₹30000 crore.

What do we know about the estate feud

Karisma’s children Samaira Kapur (20) and Kiaan Raj Kapur (15) have approached the Delhi High Court demanding a share in their late father’s estate. In their plea, they claimed that their late father had ‘repeatedly assured’ them of their share, which was eventually absent in his final will. They have accused their stepmother, Sunjay’s third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of altering the will. The suit was filed after Priya at a July 30 family meeting presented a will allegedly executed on March 21 – has also sought an injunction on the transfer or disposal of the property.

During the hearing, Priya, through her lawyer Rajiv Nayyar, accused Karisma of being absent from Sunjay’s life for the past 15 years and suddenly appearing in their life after his death. Priya’s legal team emphasised that she was Sunjay’s legally wedded wife.

“I am his legal wife. The claims of love and affection – where was all this when they fought prolonged divorce legal battles in the Supreme Court,” Rajiv said.

The lawyer added, “Your husband left you several years ago.” He was referring to Karisma and Sunjay’s messy divorce in 2016, which saw allegations around domestic abuse as well as substance abuse. Another report claimed that Sunjay was helping his former wife and actor Karisma Kapoor and their kids get Portuguese citizenship.

Justice Jyoti Singh directed Priya to file her replies to the plaint and posted the matter for further hearing on October 9. The Court has asked Priya to submit a list of all movable and immovable assets of Sunjay.

In the early 2000s, Karisma Kapoor was one of Bollywood’s top female stars. When her engagement with actor Abhishek Bachchan was announced, it made news for weeks. The two ‘royal families’ of Bollywood were coming together, it seemed. But it was not to be. Within months, their engagement was broken, and just months later, Karisma was betrothed to industrialist Sunjay Kapur.

Many in Bollywood asked who Sunjay was at the time. The Delhi-based industrialist was a divorcee and known to be the life of the Delhi party circuit. But none of that mattered to Karisma’s mother, former actor Babita. A source told Hindustan Times in the mid-2000s that she always wanted an ‘industrialist husband’ for Karisma. “Sunjay was a good catch and nothing else mattered except his industrialist tag,” the source added, “Sunjay himself was perhaps a little star-struck.”

The fairytale wedding

It was a fairytale wedding at the RK Studios in Chembur, Mumbai, on September 29, 2003. Although a large section of Bollywood avoided the wedding due to their loyalties to the Bachchans, Karisma soon wrapped up her pending films and moved to Delhi.

She continued to travel to Mumbai to film her show Karishma: A Miracle of Destiny, but reports said that Sunjay did not like that. Karisma ended the show and bid her acting career goodbye, at least for a while.

The first cracks appear

But the Delhi-Mumbai divide hit her hard. A source told HT in 2006 that Karisma felt uneasy at Delhi’s parties and did not fit with the socialite crowd. “She was unable to match wits with the Delhi society crowd,” said the source. Apparently, “she once thought a Labrador was a new car.”

In March 2005, Karisma moved back to Mumbai for the birth of her daughter, Samaira, and stayed back. Sunjay went to her with divorce papers, but she refused to sign. After much negotiation, the two reconciled. Son, Kiaan, was born in 2011.

The messy divorce

But the marriage unravelled again. As per reports, Sunjay’s family blamed Babita’s ‘influence and interference’ in Karisma’s life. When she filed for divorce, Karisma alleged domestic abuse and attributed it to Sunjay’s alleged substance abuse. A messy divorce followed, which saw the marriage eventually break down in 2016, almost a decade after the cracks first appeared.

Sunjay eventually married Priya Sachdev in 2017, and they had a son. Karisma and Sunjay’s children—Samaira and Kiaan—remained close to their father even after he remarried. But Karisma largely stayed away from family gatherings and vacations. The delicate balance broke after Sunjay’s death.

Sunjay’s death and the legal battle

The businessman died in June 2025 in London, and soon, Kiaan and Samaira accused Priya of forging his will and excluding them from the estate. The reported ₹30000 crore worth of the estate meant that a fight was on. The case is in the Delhi High Court now.
