Buddy Guy, Larkin Poe, and the Cross-Generational Power of B.B. King’s Blues Summit 100

by jummy84 November 15, 2025

Joe Bonamassa’s sprawling centennial tribute keeps unfolding – Vol. III reminds us that the blues is still alive, still changing, and still finding new ways to connect generations.

When B.B. King said, “The blues are the roots, the rest are the fruits,” he wasn’t making a slogan. He was describing a foundation that still feeds every branch of popular music. Sixty years on, those roots keep spreading – and B.B. King’s Blues Summit 100, the multi-volume tribute curated by Joe Bonamassa, has become a kind of year-long proof.

The new installment, Vol. III, leans hard on emotional memory. Its centerpiece, “Sweet Little Angel,” pairs 88-year-old Buddy Guy with the ghost of his oldest friend. The accompanying video stitches archival clips of King and Guy onstage with newly restored footage – less a music video than a conversation across time.

“Buddy Guy is obviously the first call you make when putting this project together, and ‘Sweet Little Angel’ was his preferred song,” co-producer Josh Smith said. “This take shows you why Buddy is the living legend he is. Our most important living blues artist. Both his vocal and guitar playing are from the same live track – no messing around, old school. The real deal indeed.”

Then Guy adds a line that lands like a benediction: “I’m remembering you, B. You know that. I can’t do it like you, but I can try.”

Elsewhere, Vol. III spreads the gospel sideways. Larkin Poe rough up “Don’t You Want a Man Like Me” with swagger and slide guitar, while Trombone Shorty and Eric Gales turn “Heartbreaker” into a brass-fueled storm. Texas mainstay Jimmie Vaughan brings an easy shuffle to “Watch Yourself,” and Larry McCray closes with a slow burn take on “When It All Comes Down (I’ll Still Be Around).” Smith called McCray “the greatest contemporary bluesman in the world,” and on this track, it’s hard to argue.

Taken together, the songs feel less like nostalgia and more like continuation – a reminder that King’s influence was never about imitation but interpretation.

The earlier volumes drew from a similar idea. Vol. I gathered Michael McDonald, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Bobby Rush, George Benson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and D.K. Harrell. Vol. II widened the frame: Gary Clark Jr., Pat Monahan of Train, Keb’ Mo’, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Paul Rodgers, and Aloe Blacc.

Keb’ Mo’ recalled meeting King in the early ’70s: “Did a show with B.B. King and the Average White Band. That’s when I met him, but I’ve been listening to B.B. King my whole life.” Joanne Shaw Taylor remembered the encouragement she got opening for him as a teenager: “He was incredibly encouraging towards me… I’m so thankful Joe asked me to be part of this project in honor of him and this important birthday.”

Now comes the project’s biggest reveal so far: “The Thrill Is Gone” – the song that defined King to the world – will feature Chaka Khan and Eric Clapton, a pairing that feels both obvious and daring. If Buddy Guy’s appearance represents lineage, this collaboration represents reach.

“When B.B. was alive and active, he was the blues – he was the sun which all planets rotated around,” Bonamassa has said. “You only get one shot to do this correctly. And I think we nailed it.”

Whether you buy that or not, Blues Summit 100 is hard to ignore. The 32-track rollout, dropping in monthly waves through February 2026, plays like a serialized history lesson: each song another voice testifying to why the blues still matters. Some artists whisper it, some shout it, but all of them keep the circle unbroken.

As Guy puts it on “Sweet Little Angel,” the job is simple and impossible: try to do it like B.B., knowing you never quite can. The mission is just to play and that’s where the blues lives.

bitchy | Duchess Meghan talks As Ever, Netflix, WLM & more at the Fortune summit

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

The Duchess of Sussex was a speaker at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, DC on Tuesday. She wore a creamy ensemble from Brochu Walker, lowkey one of her favorite post-Sussexit labels. She also wore some jewelry pieces from Ukrainian brand Guzema! She wore some Guzema pieces in New York as well. I have no idea if she was gifted all of these rings and earrings, or if she received one or two gifts and decided to buy more. I do know that Harry came back from Kyiv absolutely loaded down with gifts, many of which were specifically for Meghan. Anyway, the blouse is beautiful, and Meghan just looked amazing here.

During her Q&A session, Meghan spoke at length about women’s financial independence, what her first year of As Ever taught her, and what was her headspace in 2020, when she and Harry were just starting to build their lives in California. I was really interested in a lot of business talk. She confirmed that With Love, Meghan has an eighty-person crew, which still astounds me. And yet, she says that As Ever has a ten-person team. Hm. She also spoke about the new Netflix deal, which the Sussexes signed a couple of months back. Some quotes:

Meghan’s 10-person As Ever team: “I think you have to work as a team. You’re only as solid as the rest of the people around you. And also, I want the life-work balance, if such a thing exists. I’m still going to go and chaperone the first-grade field trip and run back and try to finish the meetings. I love the creative part, which I think I’ve touched on quite a bit, and the brand is an extension of my aesthetic, but it’s more than that. The operational side is so key.”

The Sussexes’ new first-look deal with Netflix: “My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix then, not dissimilar to Higher Ground and the Obamas’ deal, once that had come to its term, the extension of it — which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership — was now being in a first-look deal. Which is also exciting because it gives us flexibility to go to our partners first, then at the same time, shop content that might not be the right fit for Netflix but has a home somewhere else.”

Whether we’ll get a WLM Season 3: “Well, the holiday special is coming out in November. It’s a really good one. So I think looking at that format — again, it’s a year of learns — so we’re able to say, ‘Eight episodes for two seasons — it’s a lot of work. And having done Suits for seven years, I remember what goes into a production. I also recognize how much people want content in different sizes. Part of what we’re testing out now is, it’s amazing to sit and watch a show for 30 minutes, but how can I give you a recipe in two minutes? And where can I share that with you? And how that continues to grow As ever.”

[From People Magazine]

I’m including the full video of the Q&A session below. Meghan expands even further on the new Netflix deal and mentions that there’s been work behind-the-scenes developing content, and she makes it sound like there are some projects coming up in the next year. That being said, it doesn’t sound (to me) like she’s super-committed to With Love, Meghan. Her priority is clearly As Ever above all else, and she sees WLM as primarily adjacent to As Ever at this point. It will be very curious to see if there’s a Season 3. While her WLM crew is insanely large for such a small, intimate show, I also feel like they’re shooting the episodes pretty quickly. So… I don’t know.

Girls Make Beats — a non-profit empowering the next generation of female producers, DJs and engineers — hosted a summit for local middle- and high-school girls at Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles on Friday (Oct. 10) in honor of International Day of the Girl.

Approximately 500 students from L.A., Compton and Inglewood spoke with executives and creatives such as Rochelle Balogun, senior hip-hop & Afro programmer at Amazon Music; Qiana Conley Akinro, senior executive director of the Recording Academy LA Chapter; producer/songwriter Trinity; and songwriter Whitney Phillips during speed mentor sessions. The girls also practiced DJing through virtual reality with Tribe XR and with Serato through TEC Leimert, a Black-owned non-profit dedicated to helping communities of color to keep pace with technological innovations in an effort to bridge a growing digital divide. Other activations at the Girls Make Beats Summit included jamming with pink and purple Girls Make Beats branded guitars in the Plug and Play area, learning about the audio pitch modification tool Melodyne with the musical software company Celemony, and checking out Mobile Sessions, a mobile recording/mix/live production studio built inside of an RV.

The girls later filed into the Paramount Theatre, where they were treated to a performance of “Big Screen” by Girls Make Beats event producer Stichiz and Janice & The JAC Trio, and greeted by host Kaiya Nyasha. Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and Phylicia Fant, global head of music industry and culture collaborations, delivered more remarks. Later, the girls tuned into the “What Is Sync Licensing?” workshop with Racquelle Proctor, senior manager of creative music strategy at Paramount, and the “How to Make a Beat” masterclass with Girls Make Beats founder Tiffany Miranda. And three students won the $1,700 You Glow Girl scholarship.

Girls Make Beats was also honored by Janelle Monáe at Songwriters of North America’s fifth annual Warrior Awards on Sunday evening (Oct. 12).

beam & MIA ESG Summit highlights industry shift from ambition to action

by jummy84 September 19, 2025
written by jummy84

The UK meetings and events sector has underscored its commitment to sustainability at the beam & MIA ESG Summit, where industry experts came together to share practical strategies for embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across the meetings and events sector.

The summit examined how purpose-driven business models, responsible supply chains, and transparent certification frameworks are transforming the industry. Highlights included:

  • Ticket Tailor’s ‘growth on purpose’ strategy, which ties profit-sharing and carbon reduction to business growth.
  • Panel discussions around authenticity, business efficiency, and the importance of ingraining ESG into business practices.
  • The younger generation being encouraged to lead in ESG initiatives, with training and clear communication essential.
  • The introduction of the carbon literacy concept, with a call to action for businesses to work towards it.

A recurring theme was the importance of consistency and credibility. With clients demanding tangible proof points, speakers stressed that schemes such as B Corp and Greengage ECOsmart are becoming essential. At the same time, innovation is helping venues and agencies cut energy bills, reduce waste, and demonstrate measurable impact while maintaining competitive pricing.

Louisa Watson, beam Chair, said: “This summit shows that our industry is moving from words to action. What really stood out for me was the reminder that purpose and profit can go hand in hand. As an industry, we mustn’t be afraid to start small, be authentic, and accept that we are all a work in progress. What matters most is that we take action, however modest, and do it with credibility. ESG is about being brave, creative, and consistent, and when it becomes part of everyday decision-making, it delivers reputation, resilience, and change.”

Shonali Devereaux, MIA chief executive, added: “Every session reinforced that embedding ESG into our business DNA is not only a moral imperative but also presents a powerful commercial advantage. To truly see sustainability as a winning strategy, we must broaden our definition of ROI recognising that it delivers trust, loyalty and long-term business resilience. Small, authentic actions, from advocating with clients to building carbon literacy and accountability within our teams, are steps that will future-proof our organisations and our industry. Most importantly, we must begin asking ourselves: what can we do tomorrow that we aren’t doing today?”

The beam & MIA ESG Summit positions the UK’s meetings and events industry at the forefront of responsible business practice, setting a strong example for global counterparts.

beam and the MIA (Meetings Industry Association) have announced that Stuart Goldsmith, internationally acclaimed climate comedian and speaker, will deliver a keynote at the ESG Summit on 15th September 2025, at Warwick Conferences.

Complementing the summit theme of championing responsible business in events, Goldsmith’s unique blend of sharp wit and powerful insight will address one of the most pressing issues of our time – the climate crisis.

Well known for his intelligent and thought-provoking stand-up, Goldsmith has performed climate comedy on the BBC’s Live at the Apollo, Conan in Los Angeles, and at leading global festivals. His 2023 solo show Spoilers won Best Show at Leicester Comedy Festival 2023, received five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was widely praised for its ability to confront sustainability with humour and hope.

Goldsmith’s work has featured across BBC News, Radio Times, and News UK, and he has appeared at leading sustainability events including the Net Zero Festival, Blue Earth Summit, and GreenBiz in the US. His performances engage audiences and alleviate our collective dread by using comedy to tackle a serious subject.

Louisa Watson, beam Chair, welcomes Goldsmith to the event line-up, commenting: “Stuart’s ability to combine comedy with such a serious and urgent topic offers a brilliantly refreshing way to inspire conversations and action. His voice will help lift the tone for a summit dedicated to shaping a more sustainable and responsible future for the events industry.”

Alongside Goldsmith’s keynote, the collaborative ESG Summit 2025 will feature content curated in partnership with isla, Greengage, event:decision, Circular Life, and Scopes Carbon. The programme features panel discussions, interactive breakout sessions, and best practice case studies designed to accelerate the industry’s progress towards embedding ESG as a core business strategy.
