Medical Examiner Finds Ellen Greenberg’s Death a Suicide

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Dr. Lindsay Simon, the chief medical examiner for the city of Philadelphia, has found Ellen Greenberg’s death to be a suicide.

Hulu miniseries Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg? recently brought to light the unusual circumstances surrounding Greenberg’s death. The three-part documentary series also served among the “Materials Reviewed” for Dr. Simon to reach her conclusion.

Greenberg’s death is unusual for a suicide. She was found dead in early 2011 by her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, with a knife sticking out of her chest, 20 noted stab wounds (three more incisions would be found later by Simon) and 11 contusions. That doesn’t sound like a suicide, but one piece of evidence overruled foul play — Greenberg and Goldberg’s shared apartment door had been latched from the inside.

Goldberg had to physically break through the latch to find Greenberg in the kitchen. There were no signs of struggle in the apartment, no valuables missing and no one else’s DNA (including Goldberg’s) on the knife protruding from Greenberg’s torso. Their apartment building had 24/7 security and was equipped with several cameras, which captured footage of Goldberg’s alibi — a visit to the gym. Though really it was the logistics of the door latch that led first responders to their conclusion.

There were no cameras in the hallways to capture Goldberg forcibly entering their apartment. Cell phone records show Goldberg called and texted Greenberg asking her to unlatch the door dozens of times. Greenberg’s death was ruled a suicide on the scene, a decision that did not preserve the apartment properly for additional study.

Greenberg had a history of emotional struggles, primarily anxiety. Greenberg, a young teacher, had been feeling especially anxious about getting grades in by a deadline. She expressed the feelings with various individuals, and there was no evidence of domestic violence or other issues between Greenberg and Goldberg. Goldberg has since married and started a family; he declined to participate in the Hulu miniseries.

Greenberg’s family and friends did not accept the ruling of suicide, and an autopsy agreed with them. Subsequent reports from various consultants were a mixed bag, with some finding homicide and others suicide. The consultants’ reports were also among Simon’s reviewed materials.

Simon’s report found no defensive wounds on Greenberg’s body, which was consistent with other reports, and identified numerous “hesitation wounds” — shallow incisions consistent with being initial attempts at self harm. Hesitation wounds are exploratory, for lack of a better word, neither deep nor (in most cases) deadly.

Greenberg’s stab wounds were all on her posterior head/neck, right neck and central front torso, Simon found. “While the distribution of injuries is admittedly unusual, the fact remains that Ellen would be capable of inflicting these injuries herself,” she wrote.

“With all of the information considered … Greenberg’s death is best classified as ‘Suicide,’” Simon concluded.

bitchy | Prince William cried while talking to a woman whose husband died by suicide

Have you ever watched Broadcast News? The James L. Brooks film came out in 1987 and largely predicted the decline in quality of broadcast journalism in America. It starred Holly Hunter, Albert Brooks and William Hurt. Hurt played Tom, the handsome newscaster who was not intelligent enough to really be the anchor of a national news broadcast, but he looks the part and he’s good at playing to the cameras. Holly plays Jane, the hard-edged news producer who falls in love with Tom. Part of the plot hinges on Tom doing a one-on-one interview with a rape survivor, which airs as a segment on the nightly news. During the interview, as the rape survivor describes the ordeal, there’s a cutaway to Tom as his eyes well up with tears. Jane thinks the segment is good, but Albert Brooks’ Aaron realizes what happened – Tom was only given one camera for the interview, and he made himself cry and then spliced in the reaction, which is extremely unethical journalism.

I bring up one of my favorite Holly Hunter movies because Prince William went to speak to a Welsh widow whose husband died by suicide. William brought a camera crew with him, and I definitely want to know how many cameras were there, because William was also caught on camera, tearing up as he spoke to Rhian Mannings. The video of William’s interview was published on KensingtonRoyal’s social media and William & Kate’s YouTube channel:

It was possibly a three-camera set-up. One camera for the wide shot of William and Rhian at the table, one camera on Rhian’s closeup and one camera on William’s closeup. Or it could be something else entirely. If KP has the money and personnel for a three-camera set up, just to make their in-house YouTube videos, that’s a stand-alone scandal in my book. What I do know is that William’s tears, however sincere or not, do not make up for his actual words and deeds in the past decade. From calling his mother paranoid, to assaulting his brother, to bullying, smearing and abusing his sister-in-law until she was suicidal, William has zero authenticity or credibility here. It reads as performative because of everything we already know about William. It also reads as performative because royalists are gleefully using the video as evidence for William’s preparations for his reign. From the NY Times:

At a time when the British royal family has been convulsed by drama, infighting and a tendency by some royals to over-share, Prince William has remained largely aloof — loath to reveal the kinds of details found in “Spare,” the memoir by his estranged brother, Prince Harry.

Yet William, too, has lifted the veil in recent weeks, in his own carefully managed way. Appearing with the Canadian comic actor Eugene Levy on an episode of his travel series, and later with a woman who lost her husband to suicide, William has shown a more personal side, speaking about his desire to change the monarchy after he becomes king and tearing up over another family’s tragedy.

The exercise in image making has taken on more urgency since his father was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in early 2024. While Buckingham Palace insists that Charles, 76, is on the mend, the prospect of William having to step up to the throne no longer seems so distant.

“He’s on fast forward,” said Tina Brown, the British American journalist who has written two books about the royal family. “His father had 50 years to tell the world who he was before becoming king. It’s essential for William to show the human side of himself before his image gets set in stone as the stoic foil to Harry.”

In a video released Friday to coincide with World Mental Health Day, William met with Rhian Mannings, who lost a baby to illness and her husband to suicide. As the two sat at Ms. Mannings’s kitchen table in Cardiff, Wales, William asked her what she would say to her husband, if she could.

“I would just like to sit him down like this and say, ‘Why didn’t you come to me?’” she replied. “Because he’s missed out on just so much joy.”

William looked away, his eyes brimming with tears.

“Are you OK?” Ms. Mannings asked.

Struggling to compose himself, William said, “I’m sorry; it’s hard to ask you the questions.”

It was a startling display of emotion — not least in contrast to the stiff-upper-lip stoicism of older-generation royals like Queen Elizabeth II — though it recalled the emotional encounters his mother, Princess Diana, had with people with AIDS in the 1990s. William’s focus on suicide prevention echoed his mother’s desire to destigmatize AIDS.

[From The NY Times]

“The exercise in image making” – Jesus. Am I alone in finding this incredibly exploitative? I’m sure Rhian Mannings simply wants her story out there, with the hope that more people will be willing to talk to loved ones and reach out to people when they’re at their lowest point. But for William to rather ruthlessly exploit her family’s tragedy as part of his really obvious and plodding image rebrand is pretty ghoulish, even for William.

Prince William fights back tears in painful talk about suicide

Prince William was left fighting back tears during a candid talk with a woman who lost her husband to suicide.

Prince William fought back tears during a moving interview to mark World Mental Health Day

The Prince of Wales visited Rhian Manning at home to talk about the death of her husband Paul in 2012 as part of a video filmed to mark World Mental Health Day on Friday (10.10.25). The heir to the throne was seen getting choked up as he sat with Rhian in her kitchen and talked about her loss, which came just days after the death of the couple’s infant son George.

William said: “From the families I’ve spoken to who have had to endure suicide. There’s a lot of unanswered questions that live with you forever, really, don’t they? … If you could say something, or wanted to say something to Paul. What would you … what would you have said?”

Rhian replied: “I would just like to sit him down like this and just say, ‘Why didn’t you come to me?’ Because he’s missed out on just so much joy, and we would have been okay. And I think that’s what’s hardest – we would have been okay.”

William was then seen getting visibly emotional and Rhian asked him: “Are you OK?”

The royal touched her hand and replied: “I’m sorry. It’s just … it’s hard to ask these questions that I … “

The widow then went on to tell him: “No, it’s fine. It’s just … you’ve got children. It’s hard … and you’ve experienced loss yourself …

“Life can throw you these awful curveballs, but by talking about it, by, you know, having hope, you can continue.”

William added: “The best way to prevent suicide is to talk about it. Talk about it early, talk about it with your loved ones, those you trust, your friends. So thank you for talking about it.”

Since the death of her husband, Rhian set up the charity 2 Wish Upon A Star, to help others affected by the loss of a child or a young person while William has donated more than £1 million through his Royal Foundation to help set up the UK’s National Suicide Prevention Network.

Madonna contemplated suicide during the custody battle over her son Rocco Ritchie.

Madonna contemplated suicide during the custody battle over her son Rocco Ritchie

Describing the period as one of the most painful of her life, the 67-year-old singer made the admission during her first podcast interview, a two-hour conversation with On Purpose with Jay Shetty.

She also spoke about how spirituality helped her endure dark moments, including the legal fight with her former husband Guy Ritchie in 2016.

Madonna said: “There were moments in my life I wanted to cut my arms off… I actually contemplated suicide.

“I would say probably one of the most painful moments in my life where I honestly couldn’t see the forest for the trees was when I went through a custody battle with my son.

“Even though my marriage didn’t work out… I mean a lot of people’s marriages don’t work out. They marry the wrong people. They’re not aligned. They’re not meant for each other. Someone trying to take my child away from me was like, they might as well just kill me. That’s really how I was thinking. “And I was on tour at the time, so I had to go on stage every night. I would just be lying on the floor of my dressing room sobbing. I really thought it was like it was the end of the world. I couldn’t take it. I just couldn’t take it.”

Madonna became involved in the custody dispute when Rocco, then 16, chose to remain in London with his father while she was touring with Rebel Heart.

After a lengthy legal process, a settlement was reached that allowed him to stay in the UK.

She and Guy had divorced in 2008.

The singer, who has six children, said she is now “good friends” with Rocco.

She credited her faith for helping her endure:

Madonna added: “But thank God I don’t feel that way anymore… I’m happy to say that I’m really good friends with my son but I couldn’t see it then. I really thought it was the end of the world. So, you know, thank God I had a spiritual life.”

In the podcast interview, her first in nine years, Madonna also spoke about reconciling with her brother Christopher Ciccone before his death in June 2024 at the age of 63, following a battle with throat cancer.

She said: “For my brother, I didn’t speak to him for three years. Years and years. And it was him being ill and reaching out to me and saying, ‘I need your help’, that means having that moment, like, ‘Am I gonna help my enemy?’ And I just did.”

Madonna added: “It was such a load off my back, such a weight that was removed, baggage that was put down to finally be able to be in a room with him and holding his hand, even if he was dying, saying, ‘I love you and I forgive you.’ That was really important.”

The singer also described discovering Kabbalah in 1996 and the strength it gave her to align her life with purpose beyond the spotlight.

She has recently launched a new course, The Mystical Studies of the Zohar, with Kabbalah teacher Eitan Yardeni.

She said: “You need to be spiritual to be successful. Success is having a spiritual life, period. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have one.”

How Did Jeffrey Epstein Die? Autopsy, Jail Footage & Suicide Questions – Hollywood Life

Jeffrey Epstein is still making headlines six years after his death. The late disgraced financier and convicted child sex offender’s death has been challenged by conspiracy theorists, who claimed that the jail surveillance footage outside of Epstein’s cell wasn’t reliable. Furthermore, his autopsy report raised eyebrows. So, what really happened to Epstein when he died?

Epstein’s former confidante Ghislaine Maxwell fueled the conspiracy theories when she shared how she thinks he died.

“In prison, where I am, they will kill you, or they will pay — somebody can pay a prisoner to kill you for $25 worth of commissary,” Maxwell said, according to the transcripts and recordings from her conversation with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. “But I don’t know of any reason why, and I don’t believe in the blackmail or in any of this, I don’t think Epstein had a hit on like that. If it is indeed murder, I believe it was an internal situation.”

Learn what we know about Epstein’s death below.

What Was Jeffrey Epstein’s Official Cause of Death?

Epstein’s official cause of death was ruled to be suicide by hanging using a bedsheet, most likely using the top bunk of his bed and pitching himself forward to hang, according to law enforcement. However, conspiracy theorists have challenged this.

On August 10, 2019, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City. The Bureau of Prisons said that Epstein was given life-saving measures immediately after he was found, and first responders took him to a hospital. He was pronounced dead that day.

The Department of Justice’s Inspector General’s investigation criticized prison guards and officials, alleging negligence, misconduct, and outright job performance failures” in Epstein’s death, according to multiple outlets.

On the night of Epstein’s death, prison officials did not check on him every 30 minutes. The two guards assigned to Epstein’s cell fell asleep and failed to check on him for around three hours. Moreover, they falsified records to hide their mistake, according to The New York Times.

(Photo by Patrick McMullan via Getty Images)

What Did Epstein’s Autopsy Report Reveal?

Epstein’s autopsy report sparked doubt about his manner of death. Dr. Michael Baden was in the room for Epstein’s autopsy, and he raised questions about the fractures in his larynx and hyoid bone, calling those “extremely unusual in suicidal hangings” and aligning with “homicidal strangulation.”

“There’s evidence here of homicide that should be investigated, to see if it is or isn’t homicide,” Baden said, per PBS. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson, who conducted the autopsy, said she stood “firmly” behind her findings of Epstein’s death.

Were There Signs of Foul Play in Epstein’s Injuries?

As Baden indicated, the injuries to his larynx (located between the throat and the windpipe) and hyoid bone (between between the base of a person’s mandible and their third cervical vertebra) appeared to be signs of foul play.

However, this wasn’t the first time that Epstein tried to kill himself. On July 23, 2019, weeks before his death, Epstein was found semiconscious in his jail cell on the floor with marks on his neck. He was placed on suicide watch. Less than a week later, prison officials took him off of suicide watch and put him in a special housing unit.

Did Jail Surveillance Footage Malfunction?

After conspiracy theorists claimed there was a one-minute gap in Epstein’s surveillance footage, the Department of Justice released the footage in 2025. It only showed the outside of Epstein’s cell the night he died, but no one was seen entering or exiting it.

Who Was Epstein’s Cellmate & What Did He Say?

Epstein’s cellmate in July 2019 was former New York City police officer Nicholas Tartaglione, who was awaiting trial on four counts of murder. Tartaglione was not in the cell where Epstein died, and he was cleared of any involvement in Epstein’s first apparent attempt at suicide.

Epstein was supposed to have a cellmate with him after being moved into a special housing unit. However, that didn’t happen.

Aubrey Plaza describes grief as ‘a giant ocean of awfulness’ following suicide of husband Jeff Baena

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

20 August 2025

Aubrey Plaza has described her grief as “a giant ocean of awfulness” following the death of her estranged husband, Jeff Baena.

Jeff Baena died by suicide in January and every day has been a ‘struggle’ since for his estranged wife Aubrey Plaza

The screenwriter and director took his own life on January 3, aged 47, with his body discovered at his home in Los Angeles, California, by his dog walker.

Plaza – who had separated from Baena in September 2024 – admits every day is a “struggle” as she continues to mourn the painful loss seven months on.

Asked how she is doing by her Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, she said: “Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you. Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay, but it’s like a daily struggle, obviously.”

She continued: “This is a really dumb analogy and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but I actually mean it. Did you see that movie The Gorge? It’s like [an] alien movie or something with Miles Teller. In the movie, there’s like a cliff on one side and there’s a cliff on the other side, then there’s gorge in between and it’s filled with all these like monster people that are trying to get them.

“I swear when I watched it, I was like that feels like what my grief is like … or what grief could be like.

“At all times there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s like right there and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, it’s always there.”

Breaking her silence on his death three days later, Plaza had said in a statement given to People: “This is an unimaginable tragedy.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support.

“Please respect our privacy during this time.”
