Pumpkin pie vs apple pie: Which one is healthier for blood sugar levels?

Pumpkin pie vs apple pie. The ultimate and age-old Thanksgiving dessert debate is unending. While individuals choose their side dishes based on taste and preferences, nutrition experts also have their own say in this. A recent article published by Health claimed that a person “watching their blood sugar should choose pumpkin pie over apple.”

Apple pie vs Pumpkin pie: Sugar levels

The article further noted that a typical slice of apple pie contains around 30 grams of natural and added sugar, and pumpkin pie is placed slightly lower at around 25 grams. Pumpkin pie is also lower in carbohydrates, which a person’s body breaks down into glucose.

Apple pie vs Pumpkin pie: The glycemic load

Sharon Palmer, MSFS, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist from California, told Health that the glycemic load – a measurement of how quickly and how much a food raises blood sugar- of both pies is considered to be medium. This means that even a slice of apple pie will have a moderate effect on blood sugar.

What about calories?

Apple pie typically contains more calories than pumpkin pie (397 versus 323 per slice). Also, pumpkin pie “provides more vitamins and minerals like vitamin A and potassium,” Jackie Topol, MS, RD, a registered dietitian specializing in prediabetes, told Health.

According to American Institute for Cancer Research, apple pie may contain from 300 to a little over 400 calories per slice, depending on the amount of fat and sugar added. A slice of pumpkin pie traditionally contains about 320 calories, but recipe adaptations like using evaporated skim milk can reduce fat from the usual 14 or 15 grams per slice, thus reducing calories, too.

As the holiday season is underway, families can maintain their health by choosing the option that is better for their bodies. Making your own dessert can also serve as a way to control calories and sugar intake.

Topol explained to Health that using spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg can boost flavour naturally, reducing the need for artificial ingredients.

Alia Bhatt’s nutritionist warns this sweet treat, often considered healthy, is nothing but sugar water

Fruits should be an essential part of your daily diet as they are packed with essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. It is always recommended to eat whole fruits, especially those that are in season. However, people mostly substitute it with fruit juices, thinking they are getting the same essential nutrients.

This is actually not the case. Fruit juices, especially the packaged ones available in markets, are nothing but sugary water, according to Dr Siddhant Bhargava, celebrity nutritionist and doctor known for guiding celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday, and Sara Ali Khan.

In a March 16 Instagram video, Dr Bhargava highlighted why fruit juices are not good for your health; rather, they only add sugar to your body.

Why are fruit juices bad for your health?

Stressing that fruit juices are poisoning us, the nutritionist said, “I have been saying the same thing over and over again. Saying it once more with a more entertaining video. Please remember FRUITS are healthy, but without their fibre, vitamins, and minerals, they are nothing but sugar water.”

According to the nutritionist, the notion that fruit juices are healthy is just a myth, as they are nothing but coloured, sugary water. But then how are whole fruits healthy, but fruit juices aren’t?

The nutritionist explained that whole fruits contain vitamins and minerals you won’t find anywhere else. “But they also contain a lot of sugar. And none of the sugar in fruits is healthy, which is why there is so much fibre in the fruits you consume,” he added.

How does the fibre in whole fruits help?

The nutritionist noted that the fibre in fruits prevents the sugar in your fruits from being absorbed quickly into your bloodstream, preventing insulin spikes, and keeping the fruit healthy.

“But when the juice is extracted, the fibre gets separated. Moreover, due to the increased heat during the juicing process, vitamins and minerals also get lost, leaving only the sugary water behind, which is causing a loot in the market in the name of being healthy. So, next time you feel like drinking juice, eat fruits instead of juice,” he warned.

Endocrinologist shares 3 'healthy' foods that spike blood sugar levels faster than a chocolate cake

Endocrinologist shares 3 ‘healthy’ foods that spike blood sugar levels faster than a chocolate cake

by jummy84 October 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Sugar spike is often viewed to come from ‘visually unhealthy’ foods. Based on sight, it usually includes chocolate, cake, pastries, or anything that appears too ‘sugary.’ Because of this appearance’s sake, one may be cautious of foods like these, which appear overly sweet, limiting the intake.

Many healthy foods too spike blood sugar, sometimes even more than chocolate cake. (Picture credit: Freepik)

But here’s the oversight, conventionally healthy-looking foods escape the scrutiny, even when they raise blood sugar just as rapidly.

ALSO READ: Endocrinologist shares best and worst fruits for blood sugar spikes: Know where berries, grapes, bananas, apples stand

Addressing this, New Jersey-based endocrinologist, Dr Alessia Roehnelt, shared 3 healthy foods that raise blood sugar faster than chocolate cake and how one can modify them to make them better. She revealed that a chocolate raises blood sugar in the range of 38–45, which is low to moderate. But the other ‘healthy foods’ which she highlighted spike the blood sugar much higher, in the range of 60s to as high as 90s.

1. Instant oatmeal packets

The first one she warned about is the instant oatmeal. Oats are often the first pick for a healthy breakfast, but which one makes all the difference? As per the endocrinologist, the ones which are instant oats are highly processed, and they cause a very rapid blood sugar spike.

How do you make it better then? Here’s Dr Roehnelt’s suggestion,”If you combine the instant oatmeal with maybe some milk, instead of water, you are gonna add some fat and protein that is gonna slow the blood sugar rise.” Instant oatmilk’s spike level is one of the highest among the foods she mentioned: 79–83.

2. Oatmilk latte

Oatmilk is chosen over dairy products widely, but how risk-free is it, especially when used for a latte?

“Oat milk is made from enzymatically broken down oats, which actually gives them a very high glycemic index,” Dr Roehnelt said. “When you combine that type of milk with some possible sweeteners in your latte, that’s gonna lead to a very high blood sugar afterwards.”

For the uninformed, glycemic index is a scale which evaluates how quickly a food raises blood sugar after eating it. Turns out a latte made with oatmilk is high on this scale. Dr Roehnelt shared the score of 65–75 spike, which is moderate to high. The endocrinologist’s recommendation to make this drink healthy was to replace oatmilk with almond milk to lower the glycemic index.

3. Acai bowl

Acai bowl is a thick smoothie bowl with a lot of fruits on top. Visually, it appears very healthy, but shockingly, the blood sugar spike after eating it is one of the highest. The endocrinologist revealed it to be in teh range of 70–90, which is labelled as high.

“These have a very high fruit-to-protein ratio, and then when you add on any type of juices or granola in there, it’s gonna raise blood sugar even more,” Dr Roehnelt explained why it is high on the glycemic index.

To make acai bowl more nourishing and less prone to spike blood sugar levels, Dr Roehnelt recommended adding a scoop of yoghurt or having some nuts.

So what happens if you continue with these supposedly healthy breakfast picks regularly? Starting your day with them can trigger a rapid blood sugar spike, followed by a crash, as per the endocrinologist. One feels tired throughout the day then.

AIIMS Raipur orthopaedic surgeon shares real reason for middle-aged man’s frozen shoulder: ‘Sugar levels were sky high’

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

What does diabetes have to do with frozen shoulder – a debilitating but normally temporary condition that is characterised by an extended period of pain and stiffness in your shoulder? In an October 14 Instagram video, Dr Dushyant Chouhan, an orthopaedic surgeon from All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) Raipur, discussed the connection between frozen shoulder and diabetes. Also read | Shoulder pain: Causes and treatment

Frozen shoulder can be an early indicator of diabetes, and a simple blood sugar test can reveal underlying issues.(Shutterstock)

He shared a case study to illustrate the importance of body awareness and symptom observation in detecting major illnesses – and explained how a seemingly ordinary case of shoulder stiffness turned out to be an early warning sign for diabetes.

In the video he posted, Dr Chouhan shared that the patient initially sought treatment for severe frozen shoulder symptoms, including pain that disrupted sleep and difficulty with basic tasks like combing hair. However, the doctor realised the patient also exhibited other signs, such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, blurred vision, and tingling in the extremities, which are classic symptoms of diabetes.

What were the man’s symptoms?

Upon testing, Dr Chouhan revealed the patient was found to have severely elevated blood sugar levels, confirming a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, suggesting the shoulder problem was a secondary issue. In the video he posted, Dr Chouhan said in Hindi, “I am sharing with you a very interesting and useful piece of knowledge about how you can become aware of your body and detect serious illnesses in your body. A patient had come in with shoulder pain. The pain was so severe that it would wake them up at night. They could not lift their hands up. They had difficulty combing and buttoning. All these problems were present. Seeing this, we understood that they have the problem of frozen shoulder. Frozen shoulder means that the capsule of your shoulder gets jammed.”

He further said, “But along with this, the patient had other issues too. Such as frequent urination, frequent desire to drink water, slightly blurry vision, and tingling (numbness) in the hands and feet. So, all these symptoms are of diabetes. Meaning, people who have the disease of sugar (diabetes). When I got them tested for HbA1c and a sugar test, the levels were quite high. They had come to me for a shoulder ailment, but their main problem was diabetes mellitus, meaning the disease of sugar. The point is that retrospectively — by catching hold of a small symptom — we discovered a major illness. So, if you also have a shoulder problem, you can consider whether you might have diabetes.”

‘Body’s early whisper that diabetes had arrived’

Dr Chouhan added that 30 to 40 percent of frozen shoulder cases are associated with diabetes mellitus and advised people, especially those with pre-existing diabetes, to be proactive with shoulder exercises and diabetes management to prevent frozen shoulder.

“Furthermore, in 30 to 40 percent of cases of frozen shoulder, diabetes mellitus is certainly found. That means those who have diabetes mellitus may have the problem of a frozen shoulder, or those who have frozen shoulder may have the problem of diabetes. So, if you are already a sugar (diabetic) patient and taking medicine, you need to be extra careful that you do not develop frozen shoulder in your shoulder later. For this, you should do shoulder movements beforehand, take medicines, and control your diabetes (sugar) so that you can avoid a major problem in the coming time, which is frozen shoulder,” Dr Chouhan said.

He wrote in his caption: “A middle-aged patient walked into my clinic, complaining of shoulder stiffness and pain for months. He thought it was just ‘age catching up’. But something didn’t add up — the pain was out of proportion, and the shoulder had almost frozen. When I dug a little deeper and advised a simple blood sugar test, the results surprised him… and even him more than the pain — his sugar levels were sky high. That’s when it clicked: the frozen shoulder wasn’t just a shoulder problem — it was his body’s early whisper that diabetes had quietly arrived. Sometimes, our joints tell the story before the sugar does. If your shoulder suddenly becomes stiff and painful without injury — don’t ignore it. It might be your body’s way of warning you.”

How Sweet: Sugar Return For First Shows Since 1995

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Sugar, the band Bob Mould formed with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcom Travis in 1991 after the dissolution of the massively influential Hüsker Dü, is reuniting next year for their first shows since January 1995. A propulsive, 138-second new single, “House of Dead Memories,” is out now in tandem with a music video featuring vintage VHS clips of Sugar on tour in the early 1990s.

The trio will return to the stage May 2-3 at New York’s Webster Hall and May 23-24 at London’s Kentish Town Forum. In conjunction, The Singles Collection, a new four-LP boxed set commemorating Sugar’s beloved 1992 debut, Copper Blue, is due Nov. 28 through BMG. It includes the first vinyl release of the previously CD-only “Helpless.”

Despite its short lifespan during the height of grunge, Sugar provided Mould, now 64, a crucial bridge back into playing in a rock band after he’d spent the initial post-Hüsker Dü years recording and performing solo. The group is best-known for the Copper Blue single “If I Can’t Change Your Mind,” and went on to release the ferocious 1993 EP Beaster and the 1994 full-length File Under: Easy Listening before disbanding amicably.

“Sugar was a phenomena. No one could have predicted the results,” says Mould. “We held onto the wheel and did our best to enjoy the wild ride. Sugar was part of a pivotal era in popular music, and a special time in my life.”

After Sugar, Barbe, now 62, became an in-demand producer and engineer for artists such as Drive-By Truckers, the Glands and Deerhunter, and also began teaching at the University of Georgia, where he’s now the director of the school’s Music Business Certificate Program. Travis, now 72, has since drummed in a number of projects, including Kustomized, and worked in the administration department at Brown University.

Mould previously attempted to reform the group in 2011, with an eye on performing Copper Blue in its entirety to commemorate its 20th anniversary the following summer. The musicians actually rehearsed for several days in Barbe’s Athens, Ga., home base, but were ultimately unable to merge their schedules in a way that allowed for a tour at that time. Instead, Mould performed Copper Blue in full on a summer 2012 trek with his longtime solo band of drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy.

“When Bob asked me to play in his band, I was making five or six bucks an hour driving a delivery truck and I’d just had a second baby. I’d been hoping that this whole production thing was going to take off for me,” Barbe tells SPIN of Sugar’s earliest days. “But fast forward 20 years and I had worked on hundreds of records and was extremely busy. My youngest kid was graduating from high school that summer and we were getting him ready to go off to college. I just couldn’t make the logistics work for a Sugar reunion.”

“I was bummed out we didn’t find some way to do it because it would have really been fun, but I also know that Bob had his vision of what he wanted to do and I respect that,” he continues. “I’ve now been at UGA for a pretty long time and have a considerable degree of flexibility. I’d mentioned this to him since, just like, hey, if you ever want to do it again, don’t not ask, because things have changed for me.”

The new Sugar single, “House of Dead Memories,” was recorded in June at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studio in Oakland, Ca. “The return of Sugar is a moment that I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time,” says Travis. “What we managed to accomplish in the short span of time we were in existence still boggles my mind. There was so much packed into that period — the travel, the shows, the recordings and getting to meet so many people who loved and supported us. To get back to working together again with Bob and David is such a gift and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for us.”

Adds Barbe, “it will all get real when I feel Bob’s amp shaking my pants legs again.”

Mould just wrapped a solo electric North American tour, during which Barbe opened on several dates. A European run in the same format kicks off Nov. 8 in Barcelona and concludes Dec. 2 in Helsinki.

Orthopaedic surgeon explains hidden link between sugar and knee pain for osteoarthritis patients

by jummy84 October 4, 2025

While sugar is widely known to have negative effects on overall health – from weight gain to increased risk of chronic diseases – its impact can be particularly severe for individuals with osteoarthritis. Excess sugar not only contributes to systemic inflammation but also directly worsens joint pain and stiffness, making everyday movement more difficult for patients.

Sugar consumption causes inflammation in the knees, making osteoarthritis pain even worse.(Pixabay)

Dr Mayank Daral, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports injury specialist, working as an assistant professor at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, is starting a conversation about the dangers of sugar consumption for patients of osteoarthritis and why cutting it down is essential.

In a conversation with Revant Himatsingka, popularly known as Food Pharmer on social media, in Episode 17 of Rethink India Podcast, the surgeon explains why sugar is extremely harmful, its role in aggravating pain and discomfort for individuals with osteoarthritis, and suggests healthier alternatives that can aid in joint formation.

Sugar aggravates joint pain

For individuals living with osteoarthritis, diet plays a vital role in managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. Dr Mayank compares sugar consumption to pouring ghee in a fire – “sugar acts like ghee in a fire” – for osteoarthritis patients and significantly worsens the condition. He explains, “Sugar increases inflammation of the knees. And if someone eats sugar, it causes an insulin spike. So, no doubt, sugar should be avoided.” Knees are one of the most affected areas for osteoarthritis patients, and more inflammation due to sugar consumption, along with insulin spikes, further increases discomfort.

Alternatives for sugar

Instead of consuming sugary foods, Dr Mayank recommends switching to dry fruits. He emphasises the importance of adding dry fruits to your diet due to the presence of certain micronutrients that aid in joint formation.

He explains, “One should focus on dry fruits…because they contain many such micronutrients that help in joint formation – such as chondroitin, glucosamine, rosehip.”

These compounds have anti-inflammatory properties and provide relief from degenerative damage, and hence are used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, according to a study published on Mediators of Inflammation. The orthopaedist adds, “All these (nutrients) will really help a lot in joint health.”

Physiologist shares 3 strategies to naturally lower blood sugar levels quickly: ‘Drinking at least 2 glasses helps…’

Sudden spikes in blood sugar can be concerning, but the good news is there are natural ways to bring those levels down quickly. Small, everyday habits – whether it’s how you move, hydrate, or eat – can make a powerful difference in stabilising glucose and supporting better overall health.

According to Jose, eating veggies before meals can prevent blood sugar spikes.(Unsplash)

Jose Tejero, a ‘dietitian and exercise physiologist’ specialising in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, is sharing three effective strategies to help naturally bring down blood sugar levels quickly. In an Instagram video posted on September 17, the physiologist breaks down his blood sugar lowering strategies, explaining the science behind them and emphasising how simple daily actions can create a big impact.

Walks + squats

Jose recommends going for a 20 minute walk followed by 20 body squats. He explains, “The reason why this works is because muscle contractions increase the rate at which glucose is transported from the bloodstream and into the cell to be used as energy.” The physiologist further elaborates, “When muscles contract, they trigger contraction-stimulated glucose uptake – meaning your cells pull glucose from your blood even without insulin. This makes your muscles act like “glucose vacuums,” lowering blood sugar fast.”

Drink water

While drinking water, in itself, does not lower blood sugar levels, dehydration leads to higher blood sugar concentration, according to Jose. He explains, “While water doesn’t directly lower glucose, dehydration concentrates the sugar already in your bloodstream, making values higher. Drinking at least 2 glasses helps your kidneys filter excess glucose and reduces overall blood sugar concentration.”

Also Read | Fitness coach says doing 7 simple things means you are already fit: How many do you practise in daily life?

Eat non-starchy veggies before meals

Jose recommends eating at least two cups of non-starchy vegetables, like broccoli, spinach, or zucchini, before your meals – it adds more fibre in your diet and slows down gastric emptying. He explains, “This means glucose from carbs enters your blood more gradually, reducing spikes and improving insulin response. Studies show sequencing meals this way can significantly blunt post-meal glucose elevations.”

Summer Walker Reacts To “Sugar Daddy” Claims About VMA Date

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Now y’all know Summer Walker is going to do Summer Walker—and this time, she’s got the timeline shook. The R&B songstress popped out looking unbothered and fully pampered at the VMAs, but it wasn’t just the outfit that had folks talking. Let’s just say, her plus-one may have made a louder statement than her entire red carpet look—and now, Summer’s stepping in to address the chatter.

Summer Walker Reacts To “Sugar Daddy” Claims

After going viral for pulling up with a much older mystery man—who fans are calling her alleged “sugar daddy”—Summer wasted no time clapping back at the self-sufficiency chatter that flooded her comments. The moment sparked debates online, with many questioning her stance on independence in relationships. But, Summer made her message loud and clear—she doesn’t care what y’all think…cause do y’all pay her bills? Nah.

In a clip captured by Live Bitez, Summer hopped on live to clear the air and address all the noise, saying:

“‘You don’t need a sugar daddy, you are you are own sugar daddy’” she read off of her livestream comments. “Uh-Uh, you sound like…one of them n**gas that be calling girls ‘big money,’” Summer continued. “I don’t give a damn if I got my own money. My money is mine, your money is mine,” she followed with a mischievous laugh. “‘Get them coins,’” she read from the comments again. “Exactly, sprinkle mother freakin’ sprinkle.”

Social Media Is Actin’ Up Over Summer’s Date

Social media is split down the middle when it comes to Summer Walker’s surprise VMA appearance. Some folks are questioning whether we should even be taking dating advice from her, given her track record. Others think the whole “sugar daddy” moment was just a calculated stunt—while a chunk of the internet is actually rooting for it to be real, saying Summer deserves her soft life era. Either way, you already know fans ran to the Live Bitez comment section to sound off.

One Instagram user @complexflava commented, “Enjoy girly“

This Instagram user @bayybeautyqueen added, “Beautiful Voice 👏🏽 Cute Couple 😍”

And, Instagram user @mellyago said, “I love how he played along with this 🥰”

While Instagram user @lover_of_wmn wrote, “I don’t think that’s really her man.. they know y’all gonna eat it up Everytime and y’all do😂”

Instagram user @moniece_sluaghter added, “I wanted this to be real so badly 😔”

Lastly, Instagram user @x_thecigarprincess_ joked, “He needed a REAALLLLLLL MANNNNNN to come to the mothf**kin front line and hold a bishh DOWN!!!“

Now, Why Is Everyone So Pressed?

Summer Walker showed up—and showed OUT—with a date that had the whole internet whispering, “Is that her sugar daddy?” The R&B star made her entrance at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7th, looking carefree, colorful, and completely unbothered, sharing cotton candy and laughs on the red carpet with her mystery man. During a quick red carpet chat with Entertainment Tonight, Summer called him her “special friend” but kept it cute and private, brushing off further questions about their connection.

Her date chimed in, saying they met through mutual friends in L.A. However, when asked how long they’d been seeing each other, Summer hit back. The songstress gave a playful reminder that her personal life is off-limits before making her way inside. Fans, however, were on it. Fresh off her breakup with rapper Rico Recklezz, many started speculating that Summer might’ve leveled up to someone older, well-connected, and well-funded. Some even joked she’s deep in her soft life era with the “sugar daddy” rollout—while others clocked the timing as perfect promo for whatever Summer might be dropping next. Either way, one thing’s clear: she’s keeping us guessing.

French biochemist shares the ‘easiest way to reduce blood sugar spikes’: Do this simple 5–10 minute exercise after meals | Health

Managing blood sugar levels can be a daily challenge, especially for people with diabetes or those at risk. Jessie Inchauspé, French biochemist and New York Times bestselling author, shares in her August 25 Instagram post how simple techniques like ‘calf raises’ can help reduce blood sugar spikes and support better glucose control. (Also read: Fitness coach shares the best exercise to regulate blood sugar and lower diabetes risk: ‘Building muscle is key’ )

Simple calf raises help lower blood sugar spikes after meals, says Biochemist.

How to do calf raises to lower glucose

“Just eaten a donut or a big bowl of pasta? Try this: Feet on the ground, lift your heels up and down. This makes your soleus muscle (hiding in your calf) contract, helping soak up the glucose from your bloodstream. And boom, smaller glucose spike,” Jessie wrote in the caption.

In a video, Jessie explains, “The soluup pushup or the calf raise, imagine you’re at your desk, at work, or at school, wherever you’ve eaten something really high in carbs. Here is the easiest and most discreet way you can lower the glucose spike at that meal. You simply put your feet on the ground and go up and down, keeping your shoes on, for 5–10 minutes.”

Jessie shares the benefits of this exercise: “Your calves contain a muscle called the soleus, which studies have shown is especially good at soaking up glucose from the bloodstream after we eat.”

What are the benefits

Quoting the study, she explains, “The study, called ‘A Potent Physiological Method to Magnify and Sustain Cellulose Oxidative Metabolism Improves Glucose and Lipid Regulation,’ asked participants to do calf pushups or raises for five hours. That’s a lot, of course, but here’s what they found: five hours of calf raises reduced post-meal glucose spikes by 52% and lowered extra insulin levels by 60%.”

She clarifies, “We don’t have to do this for 5 hours. Even doing 10 minutes can have a strong impact. In my own test, I compared a pain au chocolat with and without 10 minutes of calf raises. The glucose spike was much smaller with the exercise, and it’s very discreet. It’s very, very easy. I recommend you test this out.”
