Why ‘South Park’ Suddenly Entered Its 28th Season This Week

This year’s episodes of South Park have brought a resurgence of the franchise. Season 27 of the beloved series is a ratings bonanza for Comedy Central, as well as a creative triumph for its showrunners, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and a delight for fans of irreverent topical satire. In fact, the animated hit’s fans have been so laser-focused on every detail of the show that they were quick to notice when Wednesday night’s episode marked the beginning of the show’s 28th season — an unannounced move that seemed to make little sense.

Wednesday night’s episode focused on several current issues, including surveillance, government encroachment on everyday life, and the annoying “6, 7” meme that has overtaken Gen Alpha. It also marked a whole new season of the show, which returned for its 27th season over the summer after a two-year hiatus to critical acclaim and the chagrin of the White House. Traditionally, South Park seasons consist of six episodes and, like most TV shows, have a long break until the next season begins. However, early in the latest run, it was widely reported that season 27 would consist of 10 new 22-minute episodes. All the better for the show’s many fans.

Ahead of Wednesday’s show, fans began to speculate as to why what was expected to be season 27’s sixth episode was being listed as season 28, episode 1. It must be a glitch, viewers assumed, or maybe a maneuver to fulfill Parker and Stone’s contractual obligations, given the retooling of their deal over the summer. It was perplexing for many to find that many of the plot threads set up in the five episodes that made up season 27 were continued as if they were the same season; in fact, nothing from the storylines — Donald Trump and Satan’s love child, Jesus’ entree into South Park Elementary as a counselor — had been resolved by episode five.

It turns out that this is a case of misreporting, a rep for the show suggested on Friday. Season 27 was never meant to be a full 10 episodes, and the showrunners had planned all along for Seasons 27 and 28 to bow at five episodes each, it seems. No announcement was made regarding the number of episodes in season 27 at the time it debuted, Comedy Central clarified to The Hollywood Reporter. This is all despite widespread reporting of a 10-episode run for the latest season. And what the rep told THR tracks: looking back at the press releases for this season, Comedy Central has consistently provided air dates for the upcoming episodes, but has never referred to them as part of a continuous season of 10 episodes.

Yet the latest season has had a perplexing schedule. Episodes 2701 and 2702 aired on the standard week-over-week schedule, but then it was announced that the team had switched to a biweekly schedule before the delayed fifth episode. That now-apparent season finale aired three weeks later, on Sept. 24. It was another three weeks before Wednesday’s surprise season 28 premiere episode.

Could there be more to this that we don’t know? Perhaps. Does it matter, as long as South Park keeps delivering pitch-perfect satire? Not really.

Cardiologist reveals 1 daily habit that’s putting ‘young, healthy people in their 20s and 30s suddenly in heart failure’

In a September 6 Instagram post, Dr Dmitry Yaranov asked, “Do you think energy drinks are harmless? Or have you ever felt your heart race after one?” The cardiologist, who is known on social media as ‘Heart Transplant Doc,’ titled his post ‘The one daily habit that’s putting young hearts into failure.’ Also read | Cardiologist explains 10 signs of heart disease you ignore but should not: Irregular heartbeat, swollen feet, jaw pain

Cardiologist warns about ‘energy drink heart’

Energy drink consumption has been linked to serious heart issues in young, healthy individuals. Dr Yaranov’s observation of ‘energy drink heart’ cases highlights the potential risks associated with excessive energy drink consumption.

He said, “The ‘energy drink heart’ I keep seeing in my clinic. I’m seeing this more and more — young, healthy people in their 20s and 30s suddenly in heart failure. No smoking, no family history. The common thread? 3–4 energy drinks a day.”

Energy drinks can trigger abnormal rhythms

Dr Yaranov explained that energy drinks can increase blood pressure, trigger abnormal heart rhythms, and weaken heart muscles over time. High levels of caffeine and other stimulants can push the heart into overdrive, leading to potentially life-threatening conditions.

He said, “High caffeine + stimulants push your heart into overdrive. They can trigger abnormal rhythms, raise your blood pressure, and — over time — weaken your heart muscle. Your heart isn’t designed to run at ‘max’ all day, every day.”

Dr Yaranov added it’s crucial for people to be aware of the potential dangers of excessive energy drink consumption, and said: “And here’s the scary part — many of these patients thought they were fine… right up until they weren’t.”

Energy drinks can spike heart rate, increase BP

What are the cons of consuming energy drinks? In a June 27, 2025 interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, consultant, department of cardiology, CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, had said, “Packed with high levels of caffeine and sugar, they (energy drinks) can spike heart rate, increase blood pressure and trigger anxiety or sleep disturbances. Over time, frequent consumption can strain your heart and elevate the risk of arrhythmias or other cardiac problems, even in healthy individuals.”

He had added, “The mental boost is temporary, but the physiological stress can be lasting. It’s important to read labels, stay informed, and choose healthier hydration options like water or natural juices to truly support both heart and mind health.”

Why Every Millennial Woman You Know Is Suddenly Watching ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’

What’s going on here? Have we all been brainwashed in some kind of evil genius, Josie and the Pussycats-inspired scheme? Or is this just one of those timeless stories that has somehow tapped into a set of universal truths that perfectly capture what it means to be human? As someone who was extremely skeptical at first (did I mention that the main character is called Belly?), I can now confidently say I believe it to be the latter. That, and the way the show manages to seamlessly blend nostalgia with romantic intensity, offering a comforting kind of escapism that reminds us all of how we behaved at that age.

Despite being a current show, I do think there’s something definitively millennial—both tonally and plot-wise—about the whole thing. Consider the TV shows and films we were raised on: Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, The OC, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill… love triangles (particularly between two brothers) were an integral part of our cultural diet. “It becomes a real talking point of ‘which team are you on?’ and makes you much more invested in the characters because you’re rooting for your ‘team,’” says Holly, 30.

It’s worth pointing out, too, that Han’s books were first published in 2009, 2010, and 2011—so, when a lot of millennials were teenagers. “It reminds me of being that age and all of the comfort teenage shows and rom-coms I loved,” adds Holly. “With the current state of the world, maybe a lot of us want to feel like we’re 16 again.”

It’s mammoth success could also be partly attributed to the fact that episodes are released weekly rather than all at once—a rare but clever tactic that both builds anticipation and harks back to how shows operated when we were younger. “Back then, we had to wait weeks to find out what was going to happen in our favorite programs,” says Jenna, 40. “And in the meantime, we’re having conversations with people, seeing reactions online, and experiencing delayed gratification rather than binging in a day. Watching new episodes becomes an occasion.”

Then there’s the soundtrack, which has thus far featured no fewer than 20 Taylor Swift songs across the three seasons, not to mention tracks by Olivia Rodrigo, Phoebe Bridgers, and Gracie Abrams. All of this ensures that sonically, the series taps into a wider sad-girl musical universe that is characterized by the same themes and feelings as the show: longing, heartache, and seductive melancholia. Fans are even speculating that Swift may drop the first single from her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, in the series finale—which seems deranged, but weirder things have happened.
