Manipal Hospital neurologist reveals why strokes can happen even to healthy people

Sometimes, despite any health issues, a major medical emergency like a stroke can strike. You may be doing everything right, or at least it may appear so, but still, you are at risk. To understand more about the hidden triggers that go unnoticed, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Satwant Sachdeva, senior consultant- neurology, Manipal Hospital, Patiala, who revealed that there are hidden culprits that quietly raise the risk of stroke in seemingly healthy individuals.

Describing how stroke occurs, he said, “A stroke strikes when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, reducing the amounts of oxygen and other essential nutrients that the brain needs.”

Among the many risk factors, hypertension and diabetes are well established. The neurologist added, “Hypertension and diabetes are two common culprits that lead to strokes, but hidden culprits like stress, dehydration, and genetic factors may also play a significant role.”

But there are some less obvious, hidden triggers which can quietly damage the body and slowly push one towards developing a stroke without showing any clear warning signs. So while the health parameters may look fine on paper, there are some silent factors which may be working in the background, increasing your stroke risks significantly.

Hidden triggers for stroke

Elaborating on the lesser-known causes, Dr Sachdeva explained, “Chronic stress and insufficient sleep increase levels of cortisol, which can damage blood vessels and lead to increased blood pressure.” While you are regularly stressed, your body stays in the state of stress, producing stress hormone, cortisol, which weakens your blood vessels, making your blood pressure rise and subsequently increasing the risk of a stroke.

The next trigger is dehydration. As if you are dehydrated, the neurologist revealed that the blood gets thicker and one becomes vulnerable to clotting. “Dehydration can make blood thicker and more susceptible to clotting,” he said.

Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, crash dieting or excessive exercise, according to Dr Sachdeva, may also cause a stroke.

5 preventive measures for stroke

Strokes can be prevented with the help of a few simple lifestyle changes. The neurologist recommended these:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink enough water throughout the day to maintain healthy blood flow.
  2. Monitor Heart Health: Get regular check-ups to detect conditions like atrial fibrillation early.
  3. Know Your Family History: If strokes or clotting disorders run in your family, talk to your doctor about preventive screening.
  4. Adopt a Balanced Lifestyle: Avoid smoking and crash diets; instead, focus on moderation, nutritious food, and regular physical activity.
  5. Exercise Regularly: At least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days helps keep blood vessels healthy.

One of the reasons stroke is an emergency is that the initial signs are ignored. Dr Sachedva said, “Strokes usually begin quietly and with noticeable signs that can easily be ignored. A headache, sudden weakness or fatigue may seem benign, but they can all be the body signalling an urgent note.” He drew attention to how these warning signs often overlap with common issues like stress or exhaustion. Then they are often dismissed, until it’s too late.

Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil Had Three Strokes Leading Up to the “Big One”

Earlier this month, Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil revealed that he suffered a stroke last Christmas, leading to the band postponing its planned Las Vegas residency. Now, the veteran rocker has disclosed that he actually had three other strokes leading up to the “big one.”

Mötley Crüe are currently in the midst of the rescheduled residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, running through an October 3rd show (tickets available here). The concerts were originally slated to take place this past spring, but were postponed due to an at-the-time undisclosed medical issue affecting Neil.

In his interview with the Las Vegas-Review Journal a couple weeks ago, Neil revealed, “I had a stroke. My whole left side went out… I had to learn to walk again, and that was tough. The doctors said they didn’t think I’d be able to go back on stage again.”

In a new conversation with SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Neil shared more details about his medical battle, saying he may have recovered a lot sooner had he caught the “big” stroke sooner.

“It was Christmas night, and I went to sleep,” recalled Neil. “I woke up and I couldn’t get out of bed. I’m, like, ‘What’s going on?’ And my left leg wouldn’t work, and my left arm wouldn’t work. So I had to get help out of bed. I couldn’t push myself up to get myself comfortable in bed. And I had to have help. And slowly but surely, the sensation came back in my legs.”

He continued, “[My then-girlfriend] Rain has an aunt who’s a nurse, and she called her aunt, and she said, ‘This is what’s going on with Vince,’ and [her aunt] goes, ‘He’s had a stroke.’ And by then it was just too late to go to the hospital because you have to get [there] within, like, 12 hours or something. And I was just kind of, like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna go away. It’s gonna go away.’ … I thought, ‘Oh, well, it’ll come back in a little bit.’ But it didn’t. Yeah, that was the hard part. Then I went to the hospital. They said I had a stroke, and they go, ‘We can’t do anything for you now because you’ve already had it and you’ve gone past that time’ where they give you this drug — it makes it so you’re not numb on the side.”

As for what caused the stroke, Neil explained, “Well, they said that I had a blood clot in my leg that ran up through to my brain. And they showed me — I had a neurologist come out and they took x-rays and stuff, and you see I had scars in my brain. [And they said], ‘See that’s where you had a stroke.’”

The singer also found out that he’s actually had “four strokes throughout the years. Two of ’em I didn’t even know I had. One of ’em was a mini stroke that happened and I just lost feeling in my hand. And that was it. And I got over that pretty quickly. But then this last one, it was a big one.”

Asked by Trunk about how doctors knew he had four strokes, Neil responded, “Because they could see it in your brain. It’s scarred right around the same spot. I had four scars in my brain, and the neurologist said those are all strokes.”

Neil, who’s father died of a stroke in 2021, went through months of physical therapy to get back onstage. He performed a solo show in early August, and is currently rocking at “95 percent” with Mötley Crüe as they continue their Vegas residency. “There’s things that I can’t do on stage still,” he noted. “It’s hard to run back and forth on that stage. That stage is so huge. But I’m getting used to it.”

Coachella 2026 Lineup: Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Karol G, the Strokes, and More

The 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup has been unveiled. Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G are heading to the desert next year as the festival’s headliners, topping the two-weekend bill in Indio, California, on April 10-12 and 17-19. Also slated to perform are Young Thug, the XX, Turnstile, David Byrne, FKA twigs, Addison Rae, Ethel Cain, and dozens more. See the festival poster below.

Rounding out the Coachella 2026 lineup are Alex G, PinkPantheress, Iggy Pop, Givēon, Little Simz, Devo, Blood Orange, Geese, Dijon, Wet Leg, Oklou, Black Flag, Disclosure, Sexyy Red, Katseye, Moby, Joyce Manor, Lykke Li, CMAT, Wednesday, Model/Actriz, Ceremony, Bedouin, Lambrini Girls, Fakemink, Jane Remover, Drain, and the Rapture. Plus, the bottom of the poster lists “The Bunker Debut of Radiohead Kid A Mnesia.” Passes go on sale this Friday, September 19 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

As rumored, Carpenter returns to the desert after making her debut in 2024, now promoted up the billing after the whirlwind success of her albums Short n’ Sweet and Man’s Best Friend. She is set to close out 2025 with a string of dates including residencies in New York and Los Angeles. She also has a smattering of South American festivals booked in the months leading up to Coachella.

This will be Bieber’s first-ever headlining set at Coachella. Although he’s been a guest performer joining other artists onstage—Ariana Grande, Daniel Caesar, Chance the Rapper, and Tems and Wizkid—four times at the festival, Bieber has never actually performed at Coachella as a billed artist before. This set will also mark his first live concert in over three years, with his last show taking place in September 2022. Bieber is coming armed with his guest-heavy records Swag and Swag II, both of which came out this year.

This is also Karol G’s second stop at the Indio festival, following the Colombian superstar’s 2022 debut appearance. Her latest album, Tropicoqueta, came out last June, and, as things stand, the Coachella set is scheduled to be her first full live show behind the album. In early September, she performed at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, as the halftime act at the NFL game between Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Last year’s Coachella headliners were Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, and Travis Scott, with Green Day and Scott both squeezed in on the Saturday night. Others on that bill included Charli XCX—who brought out Billie Eilish, Lorde, and Troye Sivan—and Clairo, who got a Bernie Sanders introduction, but not the visa-beleaguered FKA twigs or Massive Attack, who turned down a slot after lamenting the festival’s environmental impact.
