Stephen Colbert Addresses Charlie Kirk’s Shooting Death

Stephen Colbert condemned the shooting of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show.” His statement came in a pre-taped segment that aired before the opening credits ran as normal.

“Good evening, everybody,” a solemn Colbert said. “After our scripts for tonight’s show were finished, we learned that Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist, was killed at a speaking engagement in Utah. Our condolences go out to his family and all of his loved ones. I am old enough to personally remember the political violence of the 1960s, and I hope it is obvious to everyone in America that political violence does not solve any of our political differences. Political violence only leads to more political violence. And I pray with all my heart that this is the aberrant action of a madman and not a sign of things to come. And now, ladies and gentlemen, the show that we had prepared for you.”

Kirk died on Wednesday after he was shot at a college event in Utah. He was 31.

Colbert isn’t the only late-night host to speak out against Kirk’s shooting. Jimmy Kimmel took to Instagram to demand an end to “the angry finger pointing” in the wake of the incident.

“Can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” Kimmel wrote. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon. In his post, he wrote, “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Superhero films show violence that is ‘almost pornographic,’ says Stephen King: ‘That’s wrong’

Bestselling author Stephen King slammed the excessive violence that are in display in the superhero films that are made in Hollywood.

Another Stephen King book, The Long Walk, is gearing up for release. Starring David Jonsson (Industry), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), the dystopian horror thriller film has many shocks and horrors. Stephen King asks whether Superhero films need to show so much violence?

About the film

But the author had a condition for this adaptation, given that the film showed the violence that takes place as a totalitarian regime forces a group of young men to enter an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or risk execution. He shared that with director Francis Lawrence and screenwriter JT Mollner.

What Stephen King said

Speaking to The Times UK, Stephen explained his choice and said, “If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood. And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic… I said [for The Long Walk], if you’re not going to show it, don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

Mollner added, “Even though he was writing about specific things at the time, I feel that relevance is generational and wanted to make sure we had that. The beauty, love and the story of friendship along with the brutality of hopelessness and terror. We wanted to go all the way. I knew that Stephen King wanted us to go all the way. I knew Lionsgate wanted us to go all the way. If this book got into the wrong hands, studio or filmmakers. It could’ve been neutered. So, I’m very grateful we were able to keep the teeth that the book has.”

The Long Walk is set to release in theatres on September 12.

Hear Shaboozey, Stephen Wilson Jr.’s Reflective Single ‘Took a Walk’

Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. have teamed up for a new song, “Took a Walk.” The evocative song was written and recorded for Lionsgate’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Long Walk, which was directed by Francis Lawrence and hits theaters Sept. 12.

The reflective country ballad was written by Shaboozey, Wilson Jr., Stephen Musselman, Connor Sullivan, Sean Cook, and Nevin Sastry, and produced by Sullivan, Musselman, Cook, and Sastry.

“I’m so thrilled that Francis thought of us to close out his film,” Shaboozey shared in a statement. “I really felt for these characters. These guys seemingly have no future, but hold on tight to the idea of hope—a better life, a better world. It felt familiar. The movie feels timeless and soulful, so I thought Stephen’s guitar would be the perfect complement to leave fans with a song that feels timeless.”

Wilson Jr. added, “As a fellow Stephen spelled with a ‘ph’, it’s no secret I’m a fan of Stephen King. When I was approached to write a counterpart to this song with Shaboozey, knowing it was based on Mr. King’s work, I was honored and humbled to be invited into the portrayal of such a storyline. I’m such a fan of Shaboozey and his authenticity, and jumped at the opportunity to sonically dance with this visceral but hopeful film and try to highlight the beauty in the most adverse moments.”

The Long Walk is an adaptation of King’s 1979 novel, about a group of 100 young men who enter an annual walking contest in dystopian America. During the competition, the losers are executed and the lone survivor is declared the winner. It stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.

For a long time, the book was consider unadaptable due to its brutality. Prior adaptations fell apart over the years. “I think maybe what held it back in those other adaptations is that merciless quality,” King told Vanity Fair. “Somebody putting down the money for it must’ve been, like, ‘I don’t know… this is hard. This is a painful one.’”

Stephen King criticises the “pornographic” violence in superhero films

by jummy84 September 2, 2025

Stephen King has criticised the depiction of violence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “pornographic”.

The writer, who is most adapted living author in cinematic history, was speaking about the extent of the violence in the new film The Long Walk, which is based on his 1979 novel of the same name.

He told The Times that he insisted to screenwriter JT Mollner (Strange Darling) and director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) that the young characters in the film, who enter a walking contest in which all but the winner will be executed, must be shown being brutally killed.

“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see…some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood,” he explained. “And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic.”

“I said, if you’re not going to show it [in The Long Walk], don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

Set in a dystopian United States, the film depicts 100 young men entering an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or they will be killed. The winner is the last remaining walker.

It stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Charlie Plummer and is released in cinemas on September 12.

It is one of four major King adaptations to be released on the big screen in 2025: The Life Of Chuck, with Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor, is out now, Osgood Perkins’ horror The Monkey was a hit in the Spring, while Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man is coming on November 7.

This is not the first time that King has spoken about the MCU – in 2023, he criticised people that were piling in on the miserable box office performance of The Marvels, calling it “adolescent fanboy hate”.

“I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant,” he wrote. “Why gloat over failure?”

Last month, he spoke about his wishes for the end of the Trump presidency. “I think it would be impeachment – which, in my view, would be a good ending. I would love to see him retired, let’s put it that way. The bad ending would be that he gets a third term and takes things over completely. It’s a horror story either way. Trump is a horror story, isn’t he?”

Stephen King Demanded ‘The Long Walk’ Show Teens Getting Shot

by jummy84 September 2, 2025

As The Long Walk makes the trek from the page to the screen, Stephen King recently revealed the one condition he had for adapting his 1979 novel.

The author explained that the characters in the book are “the same sort of kids that are pulled into the war machine” of Vietnam, noting that he required screenwriter JT Mollner and director Francis Lawrence to show teens getting shot in their film.

“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see … some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood. And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic,” King told The Times of London. “I said, if you’re not going to show it, don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”

In The Long Walk, premiering Sept. 12 in theaters, a group of 100 young men enter an annual walking contest in dystopian America, in which the losers are executed and only one person survives.

As Lionsgate screened the first 20 minutes of the movie at Comic-Con, Mollner said he “wanted to keep the DNA and themes that Stephen King baked into his original novel.”

“Even though he was writing about specific things at the time, I feel that relevance is generational and wanted to make sure we had that. The beauty, love and the story of friendship along with the brutality of hopelessness and terror,” added Mollner. “We wanted to go all the way. I knew that Stephen King wanted us to go all the way. I knew Lionsgate wanted us to go all the way. If this book got into the wrong hands, studio or filmmakers. It could’ve been neutered. Stephen King ‘afraid’ of dementia

by jummy84 September 1, 2025

1 September 2025

Stephen King is “afraid” of dementia and frets about being diagnosed with a terrifying brain condition every time he forgets a word.

Stephen King has admitted he is terrified of dementia

The 77-year-old blockbuster author made the confession in an interview with The Times newspaper revealing he is worried about suffering the same fate as fellow novelist Sir Terry Pratchett, who battled Alzheimer’s disease prior to his death in 2015.

King said: “That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m afraid of that happening to me and every time that I can’t remember a word or something, I think: ‘This is the start’.”

The Shining author revealed he still writes around 1,200 words a day when he’s at home and has at least one more book he wants to publish before he starts thinking about ending his writing career.

He told the publication: “I have at least one more book that I would like to write, and beyond that, man, I’m not going to say … I’d like to go out where people say: ‘I’d like another one’.”

When asked if he will continue writing even if he’s no longer publishing his work, King replied: “I think that might happen. But I’m too old to do the JD Salinger thing and write four or five books that are in the desk drawer.”

King’s writing continues to inspire Hollywood movies with his 2000 novella The Life of Chuck being made into a new film starring Tom Hiddleston and a big screen version of his 1979 novel The Long Walk also about to hit cinemas.

A new version of his 1982 book The Running Man starring Glen Powell is also heading to the big screen later this year.

King revealed The Running Man was initially turned down by a publisher but it eventually hit stores after he scored hits with Carrie and Salem’s Lot, but it was released under his pseudonym Richard Bachman.

The story focuses on a game show in which contestants are pursued by murderous hunters and they win a cash prize if they are able to stay alive.

King said of the book: “I must say I had a fun time thinking up [the] game shows …

“It was kind of amusing,” King says. “In a sick way. I mean, nobody said that I was a well puppy.”
