‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ to Resume Airing on Sinclair’s ABC Stations, Ending Blackout in Dozens of Cities Boost

Sinclair Broadcast Group announced it will once again carry “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on its ABC-affiliated stations, lifting a blackout that kept the show off the air in dozens of U.S. cities.

The network had previously blacked out the show even after ABC reinstated it nationally, in response to controversial remarks made by Kimmel. Sinclair said its decision to resume airing comes after engaging with local community and advertiser feedback, and reaffirming its duty to balance national programming with local interests.

In an official statement, Sinclair emphasized: “Our objective throughout this process has been to ensure that programming remains accurate and engaging for the widest possible audience.” The company noted that it must juggle responsibilities to its communities while also honoring its network obligations.

The blackout had affected major markets, including Washington, D.C. and Seattle, spotlighting tensions around media, free speech, and affiliate control.

Two U.S. companies will allow Jimmy Kimmel Live! to return to their ABC stations’ airwaves Friday, ending a brief boycott launched after the show’s return.

In a statement posted on social media, Sinclair Broadcast Group said Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show will return to all of its 38 ABC affiliate stations effective Sept. 26.

“Over the last week, we have received thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders representing a wide range of perspectives,” Sinclair said in the statement.

The company also said it noticed “troubling acts of violence,” referencing the shooting into the lobby of a Sacramento ABC station last Friday.

“These events underscore why responsible broadcasting matters and why respectful dialogue between differing voices remains so important,” Sinclair added.

A short time later, Nexstar Media Group said it would also return Kimmel’s show to its 28 ABC affiliate stations beginning Friday night.

“We have had discussions with executives at The Walt Disney Company and appreciate their constructive approach to addressing our concerns,” the company said in a statement.

“As a local broadcaster, Nexstar remains committed to protecting the First Amendment while producing and airing local and national news that is fact-based and unbiased and, above all, broadcasting content that is in the best interest of the communities we serve.”

Kimmel was allowed to return to work, and hosted the show again on Sept. 23 after the network said it had “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel.

Both Sinclair and Nexstar said this week they would continue to keep Kimmel off their ABC airwaves despite the return, but said they remained in conversations with ABC and Disney.

“In our ongoing and constructive discussions with ABC, Sinclair proposed measures to strengthen accountability, viewer feedback, and community dialogue, including a network-wide independent ombudsman,” Sinclair said Friday.

It noted the company has yet to adopt those measures.

ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! completely on Sept. 17 after the namesake host made comments during a broadcast about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The suspension was announced shortly after Nexstar and Sinclair said they would pre-empt Kimmel’s show.

Brendan Carr, chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, suggested earlier that same day that companies should take action against Kimmel over his comments “or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr added, comments that Democrats and other critics have said amounted to government pressure on affiliate stations, ABC and Disney.

United States President Donald Trump has been openly critical of the late-night host in the past, among others, and has previously suggested putting pressure on networks to have their shows cancelled.

“Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They’re next. They’re going to be going. I hear they’re going to be going. I don’t know, but I would imagine because they’d get — you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon,” Trump said.

In its statement, Sinclair said its earlier decision to pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel Live! was done without government pressure.

“Our decision to pre-empt this program was independent of any government interaction or influence,” it said.

Nexstar also insisted its decisions were made due to its commitment “to be stewards of the public airwaves and to protect and reflect the specific sensibilities of our communities.”

“To be clear, our commitment to those principles has guided our decisions throughout this process, independent of any external influence from government agencies or individuals,” the company’s statement said.

Nexstar last month announced a $6.2 billion deal to buy TEGNA Inc., which owns 64 other TV stations.

The deal would require the FCC to change rules limiting the number of stations a single company can own. Carr has expressed openness to changing the rule.

Sinclair has also petitioned the FCC to relax its rules limiting broadcaster ownership of stations.

Kimmel has referenced the decision to not air his show on some stations since returning to ABC this week.

“We are broadcasting to about 75 per cent of the country from Los Angeles, California, tonight,” he said in his monologue Thursday night.

He noted next week’s shows will be taking place in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“What we have to do now is stay on the move so the FCC can’t get us,” he joked.

Dutch independent radio stations announce 15-hour broadcast in to raise money for Palestine

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Ten independent Dutch radio stations are joining forces for a special 15-hour broadcast to raise money for Palestine. Find all the details below.

The live-stream, dubbed ‘Transmission For Palestine’, is set to air between 10am local time on Sunday (September 28) and 1am on Monday (29).

Listeners will be able to tune into special programming on Radio Radio, Echobox, Folder FM, Pip Radio, Future Intel, Operator, Maxi Radio, Radio Hinter, Open Source Radio and Relate Radio.

Organisers said fans can attend an in-person “community event” over the 15 hours, where they can enjoy music, drinks and food. “You might even get a prize in our raffle!” they added. “You can get lucky with club tickets, gift cards, merch, records, and much more.”

The event is open to the public on a donation basis, with all proceeds going directly to Dutch charity Plant een Olijfboom.

Per the listing, the organisation “supports Palestinian people with essentials like blankets, clothes, water, food and medicine, while also working to raise awareness in the Netherlands about the occupation and colonisation of Palestinian land by Israel and the reality of living in Palestine”.

Those who are unable to attend in person can make a donation online in the run-up to the broadcast, and via the live-stream itself.

“Bring your friends, show up and support!” organisers added. You’ll be able to listen to ‘Transmission For Palestine’ here.

Last week saw Brian Eno host his huge ‘Together For Palestine’ charity show at London’s OVO Arena Wembley. The event featured performances from Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, Cat Burns, Rachel Chinouriri, Yasiin Bey, Bastille’s Dan Smith and more. Presenters on the night included Eric Cantona, PinkPantheress, Richard Gere, Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh and Nicola Coughlan.

The concert, which was also available as a livestream, raised just under £1.5million for the ‘Together For Palestine Fund’. This will be distributed to Palestinian-led organisations such as Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service.

Speaking to NME at the gig, Eno said he “doesn’t blame” those feeling helpless about the ongoing situation in Palestine. However, he called on music fans to always have hope that change is possible with enough solidarity and conversation.

“Don’t be hopeless. You are in the middle of the biggest social movement in human history,” Eno assured. Watch the video interview in full above.

Two major television station conglomerates are “pre-empting” Jimmy Kimmel Live! despite ABC’s reinstatement of the show: Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group. The companies own multiple TV stations affiliated with The Walt Disney Company’s ABC. Here, we explain what Nexstar is, which ABC stations it oversees and how this affects Jimmy Kimmel.

What Is Nexstar Media Group?

Nexstar is the largest television station owner in the U.S. as of 2025. It owns 197 stations around the country. Nexstar now operates The CW and The CW Plus.

Will Nexstar Air Jimmy Kimmel?

No, like Sinclair Broadcast Group, Nexstar is also refusing to air Jimmy Kimmel Live! even though ABC reinstated the show.

On September 23, 2025, Nexstar released a statement, which read, “We made a decision last week to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse. We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.”

“In the meantime, we note that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets,” Nexstar pointed out.

The updated news release was titled, “Company Will Monitor the Show as it Returns to ABC.”

JUST IN: Nexstar joins Sinclair, announces they will continue preempting Jimmy Kimmel following his comments on Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

What ABC Stations Belong to Nexstar?

Here are some of the ABC affiliate’s that Nexstar owns:

  • WDHN: Dothan, Alabama
  • WTNH: New Haven, Connecticut
  • WEHT: Evansville, Indiana
  • WGNO: New Orleans, Louisiana
  • WSYR-TV: Syracuse, New York

The full list of Nexstar’s ABC affiliated stations can be found here.

Why Won’t Nexstar Air Jimmy Kimmel Live!?

Like Sinclair, Nexstar pointed to a remark that Kimmel made related to Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter in Charlie Kirk‘s murder.

“The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during a September 15, 2025, episode of his late-night show. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

Shortly thereafter, Nexstar alerted Disney and the public that it would not air Kimmel’s show for the “foreseeable future” and added that it “strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”

Shortly after news broke of Kirk’s death, Kimmel released a formal statement on Instagram, sending his condolences to the Kirk family.

“Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” Kimmel wrote in a message on Instagram. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Jimmy Kimmel’s show to remain off dozens of U.S. stations despite return – National

The owners of dozens of U.S. television stations say they will continue to keep Jimmy Kimmel Live! off their airwaves despite Disney announcing the late-night comedian’s show will return from a days-long suspension Tuesday.

Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 stations affiliated with Disney-owned ABC across the U.S., said Tuesday it will pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel’s show, noting in a statement that the program “will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products.”

“We made a decision last week to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse,” Nexstar’s statement said.

“We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.”

The statement comes after Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns 41 other ABC affiliates, said Monday it will pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its own stations, replacing the show with news programming.

Story continues below advertisement

“Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” the company said in a statement.

ABC, which suspended Kimmel’s show last Wednesday following criticism of his comments about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, announced Monday that Kimmel’s show would return after the network had “thoughtful conversations” with the host.

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is set to appear on Kimmel’s first show back, publicists for both the musician and her Hulu-distributed Lilith Fair documentary have confirmed.

Disney also announced Tuesday it was increasing subscription costs for its streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu in the U.S. by between $2 and $7 a month. It did not announce similar price hikes in Canada.

Several consumers said on social media they were cancelling their Disney streaming subscriptions in the wake of Kimmel’s suspension.

The suspension was announced hours after Nexstar said it would pre-empt the show due to Kimmel’s “offensive and insensitive” remarks in the opening monologue of his Sept. 15 broadcast.

Story continues below advertisement

Sinclair followed suit and said it would only return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to its affiliate’s airwaves after Kimmel apologizes to Kirk’s family and makes a “meaningful personal donation” to Kirk’s organization Turning Point USA.

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, posted on X that “Disney and ABC caving and allowing Kimmel back on the air is not surprising, but it’s their mistake to make.” He later applauded Sinclair for upholding its decision to block Kimmel’s show and said affiliates “have every right to demand accountability” from the comedian, who he called “an unrepentant liar.”

Kimmel has not yet addressed his show’s suspension or its return.

Nexstar and Sinclair’s announcements last week came after Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, said on a podcast last Wednesday that Kimmel was trying to “directly mislead the American public” and suggested the FCC could take action.

Those remarks set a backlash in motion, with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas saying that Carr acted like “a mafioso.” Hundreds of entertainment luminaries, including Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Aniston, signed a letter circulated by the American Civil Liberties Union that called ABC’s move “a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation.”

Since Kimmel’s suspension, however, Carr has framed the situation as an organic uprising of local affiliates against national media companies to control the content they air.

“Notably, this is the first time recently that any local TV stations have pushed back on a national programmer like Disney,” he wrote on X on Tuesday. “And that is a good thing because we want want empowered local TV stations. After all, local TV stations—not the national programmers—have public interest obligations, and they should be making decisions that in their view meets the needs of their local communities.”

Carr has also accused Democrats and critics who say he exerted government pressure to limit Kimmel’s free speech of “distortion” and “projection.”

“Jimmy Kimmel is in the situation that he’s in because of his ratings, not because of anything that has happened at the federal government level,” Carr said during a conversation at the Concordia Summit in New York on Monday, before Disney announced Kimmel’s return to the air.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is back in its late-night slot on ABC, but certain television stations run by Sinclair Broadcast Group will not air the show. The media conglomerate owns multiple stations associated with ABC and announced that Jimmy Kimmel is still “pre-empted” from airing on its channels. So, what exactly is Sinclair, and what is its significance in the television industry?

The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, and Kimmel were negotiating his return during his week-long suspension. A spokesperson for the company announced on September 22, 2025, “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

What Stations Are Associated With Sinclair?

In addition to ABC, Sinclair is also associated with Fox, NBC, CBS, MyNetworkTV, The CW and The CW Plus.

Sinclair owns four digital multicast networks: Comet, Charge!, The Nest and Roar.

Will Sinclair Air Jimmy Kimmel?

No, as of now, Sinclair will not broadcast Kimmel’s late-night show in its normal time slot. After ABC confirmed his return to the airwaves, Sinclair announced that it will “be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”

Why Won’t Sinclair Air Jimmy Kimmel?

“The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during a September 15, 2025, episode of his show. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

“Regardless of ABC’s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform,” the rest of the news release read.

Shortly after Kirk was fatally shot, Kimmel issued a public statement condemning gun violence and sending his condolences to Kirk’s family. His full statement read, “Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” Kimmel wrote in a message he shared to Instagram. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

BBC launches three new radio stations: “It’s all about the audience”

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

The three stations were part of wider proposals from the BBC, which also included the launch of a Radio 2 spin-off and the extension of the broadcasting hours of 5 Sports Extra. Both the Radio 2 spin-off and the extension of 5 Sports Extra were refused by Ofcom for the negative impact it was deemed they would have on commercial competitors.

Sam Jackson, the controller of Radio 3, says that while he couldn’t be certain that Unwind would get approval, “I wasn’t surprised, because I think we made a very, very strong case. I was very proud of the submission that we made, I felt we did a good job of arguing why this was distinctive and why it would be welcomed.”

He points out that around 8,000 different pieces of music will be played on Unwind each year, from a broad repertoire but with a focus on recordings from the past 10 years – even of Baroque or classical pieces – and a mission to introduce new contemporary works, including from performers or composers who aren’t signed to record labels.

Radio 3 chief Sam Jackson. BBC

Radio 1 controller Aled Haydn Jones is similarly robust in his defence of why we need two new stations: “It’s all about the audience. Ofcom has pointed out that the BBC needs to be doing better with young audiences. Having services for young people is a public service. Radio 1 is the biggest radio station for youth audiences in the UK, so having stations with the Radio 1 brand offering more is a pretty special thing.”

Both men are keen to stress the differences between what their stations are offering and what can be found on commercial radio, with Haydn Jones claiming that Radio 1 plays more tracks in a week than its nearest commercial competitor does in a year, though he understands the commercial imperative that may account for that disparity.

“Commercial stations are going to pick the songs that work best for their audience and play them as frequently as they want to play them. Whereas Radio 1 are about new artists coming through; over 50 per cent of Radio 1 tracks are within the last six weeks of release and Radio 1 Dance will do the same for UK dance DJs and producers coming through.”

On the back of that he expects Radio 1 Dance to play around 3,000 unique tracks a year – in previous years on BBC Sounds it has averaged around 3,200.

Sam Jackson takes an additional angle in his argument as to how Radio 3 Unwind is distinct from its competitors, saying: “If you compare what we do with Classic FM Calm where, I believe, there are no presenters, we have programmes that are presented by experts in their field.”

Close-up of Sian Williams.

Sian Williams. Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

He points to mid-morning presenter Sian Williams, who as well as being a respected broadcaster also has now an NHS practice in the field of trauma mental health, working with first responders. “She brings with her this other side to what she does. She’s a broadcaster, she loves classical music but she’s also trained professionally in mental health and wellbeing.”

Continuing in the comparison with Classic FM Calm, he’s at pains to point out he’s highlighting differences not setting out to denigrate the competition: “This isn’t meant to be a slight on what they do. They do what they do, they do that very well, but they have a kind of jukebox of music that is played with no presenters. There’s an audience for that, there’s an audience for a version of that on Spotify as well and I think anything that introduces more people to classical music is a good thing.

“But I think we have to collectively have the confidence to say there’s room for everybody and then let the audience decide what they want to listen to.”

Haydn Jones also points to the breadth of presenting talent on Radio 1 Dance, which includes many big cheeses from the dance music world, from veterans like Pete Tong to newer names such as Charlie Hedges and the Blessed Madonna.

Defending Radio 1 Anthems, which has a stated mission of serving up nostalgia for young people with a playlist of “bangers” from the Noughties to now, against accusations that it’s just like any number of commercial “decades” stations (Absolute 90s, Heart 80s, etc etc) is a bit tougher but Haydn Jones remains staunch.

“The people who are presenting it are in some of the first presenting jobs, they’ve had out of university. We work with the Student Radio Association, where we had a panel of students playlist our shows, but also inform the Radio 1 team about songs they grew up with or remember.

“But then also we add our curation with our knowledge of young people under 24 to find out which pockets of eras or genres we could delve a bit deeper into to give them ‘new to me’ music; things that they might not have discovered as they were growing up. For us, it’s about the target audience and trying to ensure that they have a service that’s dedicated to them.”

He also points to the fact that getting Ofcom approval is recognition from the broadcast industry that there needs to be a focus on young audiences, and that the BBC is better placed than any to serve that audience.

“It may not be where the easiest money is for our commercial friends, there are going to be more affluent age demographics that can pay bills. The fact that we are able to say we want to make sure that young audiences do not move away from DAB or from broadcast media and drift to streaming, I think is an important one.

“So, I think the fact that we were successful with these is great. It won’t be the full answer to our problems of ensuring that young audiences get what they need from broadcast media and BBC specifically but it’s a brilliant step.”

Asked whether there could be any more spin-offs from their stations, Sam Jackson is cautiously optimistic, saying: “Could there be a Radio 3 jazz station, a Radio 3 live music station? I love the idea of launching some new services that introduce Radio 3 to even more people so long as we keep the main network as healthy and as strong as ever.”

Everything would, of course, be subject to the same lengthy Ofcom approvals process that the new stations have already gone through and it’s this that makes Haydn Jones more reluctant to say yes to more Radio 1 stations: “No one is asking for that right now. And I’m imagining at the pace these things take, if there ever is in the future, I’ll be long gone by then.”
