Mavis Staples Finds the Beauty and Sadness in Life » PopMatters

Mavis Staples has a remarkable voice. While some singers let the rough edges of their vocals show as they age, adding an impression of authenticity to their singing, Staples wraps her seven-plus decades of musical experience in honeyed tones. There is a sweetness that comes across even as she sings about war and injustice, as well as joy and happiness.

The adjectives from the title of her latest opus Sad and Beautiful World could easily fit as a description of her singing. She knows the current state of the nation has declined in terms of race relations and other social causes. It may make her depressed, but not for long. Staples also sees the glory and good that exists. You can hear it in her voice.

Producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee) smartly recorded Staples’ voice first with minimum accompaniment before adding an all-star roster of background singers and players to flesh out the songs. The list includes notable artists such as Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield, Sam Beam, Patterson Hood, and MJ Lenderman. The album also features a first-rate collection of songs by luminaries such as Leonard Cohen, Curtis Mayfield, Tom Waits, and David Rawlings & Gillian Welch, as well as one track specially written for Staples by Hozier and Allison Russell. That song, “Human Mind”, is the standout song in an album full of masterworks.

The confessional track is simultaneously personal and confessional despite not being written by Staples. She sings about her father and family, her past career and present concerns, and “finding the good in us, sometimes”. There’s a comforting, hymn-like quality to the song, abetted by Matt Douglass’ (The Mountain Goats) soulful saxophone playing. Staples simultaneously expresses hope and doubt, and a belief in love without being smarmy or corny. Due to her age, the singer’s awareness of mortality lies latent in the lyrics, both as a fact and a mystery.

These themes carry over into several of the other nine tracks. Staples sings “Satisfied Mind”, a number hit by Porter Wagner in 1955 that’s been covered by everyone from Bob Dylan and the Band, Mahalia Jackson, Willie Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, and countless others, into a soft and primarily quiet acoustic ballad with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) on harmony vocals.

Staple’s take on Kevin Morby’s apocalyptic “Beautiful Strangers” into a surrealistic dream-like prayer. Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) penned the title track. Staples conveys the passing of time by slowing things down and annunciating each word. She croons, “Sometimes days go speeding past / Sometimes this one seems like the last” with conviction.” Love and death go together like beauty and sadness, indeed.

One can find compelling associations with Mavis Staples’ life on all the songs, from Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan’s “Chicago”, to Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch’s “Hard Times”, to Leonard Cohen’s “Anthem”, but one needn’t be familiar with her storied biography to appreciate the richness of her vocals. The Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner continues to inspire with her performances. If anything, she’s only getting better with age—although she’s always been one of our best artists.

Camelia Farhoodi Shares Her Wardrobe Staples

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Camelia Farhoodi has been one of my favorite TikTok follows for years. Based in Melbourne, her taste is impeccable—chic and minimalist, but with a darker, artistic twist that feels both genuine and lived-in. There’s an ease to the way she dresses: sleek, elevated basics and an effortless mix of comfort and sophistication.

She often wears all black, but it never feels boring: Tom Ford sunglasses, a Calvin Klein turtleneck, a Nina Ricci skirt, and a Sirrico jacket (as she recently posted). The details always feel distinct and intentional.

Her aesthetic extends beyond fashion too—you’ll see the same understated sensibility in her interiors and beauty choices. With her visual language, Farhoodi has created a space that feels entirely her own, leading to partnerships with Jacquemus, Chanel Beauty, Rhode, Prada, and Mango, as well as design collaborations with NA-KD and Lioness.

Below, I spoke to her about her personal style and the pieces she’s loving right now.

Camelia Farhoodi.

Camelia Farhoodi.

I’d love to hear more about your background and what originally got you into fashion—do you have any formative memories surrounding it or an overview of your trajectory?

I’ve always been a creatively driven person, from my earliest memories of stealing my mum’s makeup to giving the family fashion shows put together with my grandma’s wardrobe. Throughout high school (before getting a job), I would spend my allowance at my favorite op shop once a week in hopes to find as many pieces as I could. I would never look at the garments as they were—I was searching for fabrics that I loved, something I could chop and change. A size 16 top made out of lamb skin leather, turned immediately into a halter neck and mini skirt (with a pair of very blunt scissors).

When I started working I explored many different avenues trying to find my creative spark. I worked as a makeup artist (self taught) for events, weddings, my family, and friends. I worked as a trainee at a spa—learning to do manicures, pedicures, waxing, etc. I worked in retail and hospitality for 5+ years—double shifts going from one to the other. I loved working as soon as I started and I always put my all into anything I was doing… but none of it felt right.

Whilst I was working in retail (my last job), Covid hit. Forced to stay home—with a closet full to the brim of unworn clothes I had salvaged from the op shop—I decided to start taking photos in my outfits. From that point onwards, I would spend the rest of my time in Covid taking photos that my boyfriend or little brother would help me out with.

My partner is a photographer-videographer-director. So we would shoot tougher during Covid for fun… until we both got signed with the same agents! We worked throughout the whole Covid together. Brands would send us 10 looks and we would shoot a whole campaign at home with his equipment… the rest is history!

How would you describe your personal style?

Clean, fresh, and comfortable. A little bit sexy, a little bit androgynous.

What are must-haves in your capsule wardrobe?

I’m a girl with the opinion of ‘everyone looks their best when stripped back and comfortable.’ So in saying that.. I can’t live without my high-quality basics—new or vintage. I always opt for black silk pants (something that feels comfortable, but looks expensive), a classic black tank, a vintage Jil Sander light wool knit, and ballerina slippers.

Is there any outfit formula in particular you find yourself repeating over and over?

I’m a creature of habit, so unfortunately yes… when i find something I like, I wear it until it makes me sick to look at. No formula, but things that make me feel comfortable and confident. Which is usually an all black outfit (90% of the time). Black also compliments my natural features and tones well, so when I’m feeling the pre-menstrual uglies I know I can count on that. A vintage pair of satin stretch pants, Black tank, and a leather coat—some oversized sunglasses and a pointed boot. This never fails me.

What are your favorite references for finding new brands?

I usually discover new brands from other content creators on TikTok—something about the video format and seeing how clothing moves and looks in real time. I also just love the TikTok girlies and seeing how they style pieces, always sells me.

Do you have any style icons?

Oh, absolutely. I love the Olsen twins… Some people say I’m the missing third sister? It’s the casual and chic mood I’m so attracted to. Wool coat and flip flops, undone loose braids, has she just woken up? But still looks good? Lived in looks that feel like it’s always been you—I’m into that.

Can you share some of your favorite TikTok accounts?

So many favrites, but if I had to choose some current favs it would have to be: @levi.coralynn could binge watch her videos all day, she makes me feel sexy in my own skin, @brown.lexi incredible style always so inspired, @alinatimoo also obsessed with her style and she makes me laugh, @naichamercier insane hauls and love her personal style, @ticklemesilly always obsessed ofc, @there_y0u_are for interior inspo and learnings.

For people who love brand discovery, what are smaller online shops or emerging brands you’re loving?

My current favorite smaller brands are Du Ciel, Flore Flore, and Ayllón.

You’re incredible at sourcing vintage. What are the keywords you’re using right now?

Gold satin, vintage bootcut pants, Plein Sud leather, vintage Manolo Slippers.

What are some items on your wishlist at the moment?

Ugh, we could be here for a while, but if I had to choose a few… an old season The Row Bindle in any fabric really, an old Jil Sander or Gucci turtle neck knit, Tom Ford sunglasses, Maison Magdalena scarf, Flore Flore camisole, Casa Ayllón Noir Pouch, and The Row flip flop.

Is there a fall or winter trend you’re the most into?

I’m loving this very dark and feminine lingerie dressing. Lace hemlines and sheer dresses with long leather coats… so sexy and effortless like you just got out of bed and ready to go get a glass of wine with the girls.

Has there been a standout collection or look you loved this fashion month?

Currently responding to this mid-NYFW, so the month is yet to come and end.. but based on the recent NYFW collections I’ve seen so far… I’m in love with the Calvin Klein show. Old Calvin is back and it put a big smile on my face.

I always love your makeup as well. What’re your current go-tos?

For makeup, I keep it super simple. I touch my face a lot. I generally have a ‘less is more’ approach on makeup. My current routine uses 3 products—I travel everywhere with them and I love knowing if anything gets ruined I can fix it up in 2 seconds. Chanel Lip & Cheek Balm first, Reforme Beauty Power Lip on eyes, cheeks, lip liner, and to finish my fav in the world Dior Lip Maximizer in Mahogany.

I also rarely use concealer. I’m a very easily overstimulated girl, so anything on my skin truly can truly send me into a spiral, but if I have a pimple to cover I’ll go in with the Merit Minimalist Stick—even then, I sometimes don’t apply concealer and like to let my breakout breathe so it can heal. I also find that the less makeup I wear on the daily, the better my skin looks with no makeup. It’s an interesting cycle, but extremely rewarding when you can commit to it.

Do you have a signature scent?

I mix between some favorites depending on my mood! I love Aesop Eidesis after a long shower to give me home spa vibes, Byredo Bal D’Afrique all the time, any time, and Malin + Goetz dark rum for something a little different.

What are your current wardrobe essentials?

Honestly, anything Flore Flore. All my basics are now being replaced for this brand—always happy to invest in their high quality pieces. Francesca Pecchenino satin pants, Tkees classic leather flip flops, Aritzia boyfriend zip fleece jackets! My WTF must-haves. Vintage satin pants, pointed-toe boots, ballerina slippers, a classic vintage leather coat, and some oversized sunglasses!

These Are the Best Timeless Staples from London Label Aligne

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

I used to live in East London for two years, so all things British will always hold a special place in my heart—especially the fashion. It’s where I first started out in the industry, and London Fashion Week remains my favorite on the fashion month calendar. From household names like Burberry to emerging designers from Central Saint Martins, there’s something I love about what’s happening across the pond.

Lately, our editors have been talking about Aligne. I first heard of the brand when a few people on our team were chatting about it’s now stocked on Nordstrom, Shopbop, and Anthropologie. Outside our office, the label has gone viral on TikTok as well—especially its polished fitted jackets.

Here’s a roundup of the timeless staples I found while browsing their website.

A classic black wool coat is a staple in my fall wardrobe.

Aligne LB Blair Mohair Jumper.

Believe it or not, technicolor is back. This less-than-$200 mohair sweater immediately reminded me of the Fall/Winter 2025 runway trend.

Aligne, Katie Knitted Roll Neck Jumper

I live in turtlenecks when the weather gets cold.

Tania Knitted Cardigan

ALIGNE

Tania Knitted Cardigan

I like how this merino wool-cotton blend cardigan is a heavier weight for fall and winter.

Aligne, Gia Knitted Vest

You could layer it over this top as well.

Aligne, Dion Knitted Jumper

I’ve been gravitating towards navy more lately.

The Best Beauty Staples To Buy At Ulta, According To An Editor

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

As a composition-happy, magazine-obsessed girl growing up in the aughts, a beauty editor was the one and only thing I wanted to be when I grew up. It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have actually landed the career I always dreamed of, and there really isn’t a single thing about my job that I don’t love. That being said, and this may sound strange, but I do miss the casual in-person shopping trips that made me fall for beauty in the first place. These days, so many amazing products are sent straight to my doorstep for testing (I know, rough life!) that there’s really no need for me to stop at a favorite retailer like Ulta unless I’m buying gifts or am in dire need of a specific product re-stock.

That being said… whenever I do find myself meandering the aisles of an Ulta store, I feel 15 again and have zero impulse control when it comes to the contents of my shopping basket. I rarely make it out of the store under $250 and my most recent trip featuring 12 products did a $272 number on my credit card. (Although averaging about $22 per product isn’t that bad?!) Regardless, this particular haul was too good and too worth it not to share—keep scrolling to find out which products I’d immediately add to your Ulta cart!

The Brow Glue Crazy Lift

NYX Professional Makeup

The Brow Glue Crazy Lift

What can I say, BeautyTok got me with this one! In all my years of doing makeup, I’ve never—not once—used brow gels. And yet, this clear 24-hour hold formula from NYX has finally broken the spell. I know lots of brow gels promise a lamination-like effect, but they’ve never delivered for me. This one lifts, flattens, and pretty much plasters my brows to my skin (in a good way, I promise) with zero flakes or goop. I’m obsessed, and it’s even lasted through super-sweaty workouts.

Bubble Blending Multipurpose Makeup Brush

Real Techniques

Bubble Blending Multipurpose Makeup Brush

This $12 brush can do anything and everything better than its more expensive counterparts. I’ve seen celebrity makeup artists gush over its blending powers, and the ultra-soft feel and handily rounded “bubble” shape allows you to easily hit hard-to-blend areas like under the eyes and around the nose.

Color Wow, Travel Size Dream Coat Supernatural Spray

Color Wow

Travel Size Dream Coat Supernatural Spray

There is simply no better formula for ultra smooth, hydrated, and glassy strands. I had to pick up a mini because I refuse to travel without it—it’s what I call good hair day insurance.

Body Wash - Salt Water Vanilla

Saltair

Body Wash in Salt Water Vanilla

Ugh. The way I am obsessed with this Salt Water Vanilla body wash from Saltair. The scent (vanilla, sea salt, and sandalwood) is heavenly, it lathers beautifully, and it never leaves my skin feeling dry, tight, or itchy post-shower. I also plan to re-stock the matching body oil the second I run out.

Chromaplus 6-Pan Eyeshadow Palette - Outer Spice

Morphe

Chromaplus 6-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Outer Spice

I rarely wear eye shadow, but when I walked by Morphe’s Chromaplus palettes, I just had to have one. The photo online can’t really do it justice—just wait until you see this one in person.

Hydrating Milky Toner

BYOMA

Hydrating Milky Toner

There is a very popular, very viral milky toner on the market that gets all of the attention and hype. Yes, that one is good, but this one is better and more affordable. (It’s also so insanely good for pre-makeup skin prep!)

True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Bronzing Enhancer - 903 Medium

L’Oréal

True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Bronzing Enhancer

I call this my $18 hack for flawless skin. It blurs, hydrates, bronzes, and adds the perfect amount of glow to the face. It’s a true multitasker, so feel free to use it on its own, as a primer, or even mixed into and/or dabbed on top of your makeup as more of a highlighter. This is another makeup artist drugstore favorite—see here for proof!

Volume Spray 25 - 10.0 Oz

Kenra Professional

Volume Spray 25

Salon blowout hair, bottled. I’ve spent the last year trying to figure out why my hair looks (and lasts!) so much better when my hairstylist styles my hair compared to when I do it. I use pretty much all of the same products she uses at the salon, and I’ve even mastered her exact technique for beachy waves. Turns out, this finishing spray is the culprit. It’s the one thing she uses that I don’t, so I had to change that. It adds shine, hold, volume, and 72-hour humidity resistance!

Sleep: Sleep Tight Gummies

Lemme

Sleep: Sleep Tight Gummies

I’m not a good sleeper, and these gummies from Lemme have pretty much changed that. The berry flavor is great with no weird aftertaste, and the strategic mix of melatonin, magnesium, and botanicals ensures I sleep like a baby.

Eternal Roots Parfum Travel Spray

‘Ôrəbella

Eternal Roots Parfum Travel Spray

I’m so in love with the brand new ‘Ôrəbella scent, Eternal Roots, that I had to grab the travel size. The brand describes it as a “woody fruity” fragrance, which feels pretty spot on to me. It’s lush, juicy, earthy, and just sweet enough to keep it mellow and skin-like. It’s how I’d imagine forest fairies would smell after a rain shower. Need more convincing? I highly recommend watching our NYC office review.

Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm - Trace 105

HOURGLASS

Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm in Trace

I swear I own almost every single shade of the Hourglass glossy balms, and it’s still never enough! This is my ride-or-die lip product that has pretty much made the rest of my lip collection obsolete. It’s everything I need in one product (shine! pigment! plumping!) and Trace—a very chic and versatile shade of beige—is my latest fixation. (However, Invite, Haze, Rise, Desire, and Impulse are also frequent flyers in my rotation.)

Lusso Self-Tanning Mousse in Medium to Dark

Dolce Glow

Lusso Self-Tanning Mousse in Medium to Dark

This stuff is expensive but so worth it if you’re someone who self tans. The color is the most natural I’ve found (not too orange and not too green—IYKYK) and it looks fresh for days and days after you’ve applied. It doesn’t streak, it keeps the skin moisturized, and it dries quickly so you don’t feel like a swamp creature for hours post-application. How long you leave it on will determine how deep your tan will be—you can rinse off in two hours if you want a light glow, but I usually let it marinate for at least six hours to get the rich tan I love.

Italian and French Women are Opting for these Minimalist Staples

by jummy84 August 24, 2025
written by jummy84

f you’re anything like me, your social feed has been completely taken over by sun-drenched snaps from the Amalfi Coast to the streets of Saint-Tropez, with content creators soaking in the last few moments of summer.. While I’m a fan of a good pasta pic or sunset boat selfie, it’s the fashion that really has me bookmarking every other post. Of course, I’m talking about those classic Euro Summer outfits.

While the internet might have you thinking that head-to-toe designer looks are the Euro summer dress code, the stylish women I spotted in Paris and Positano are telling a very different story. Spoiler: it’s not about flashy logos or trendy gimmicks. Instead, European women are opting for tried-and-true staples like linen sets and silk scarves to carry them through the end of the summer. Below, shop all of the Euro summer staples European women are actually wearing this season.

Slip Skirts

Light, fluid, and endlessly versatile. Worn with tanks or oversized shirts, slip skirts are a go-to for effortless dressing. French and Italian women lean into neutral shades or soft pastels for an easy, polished vibe.
