Inside Square Peg Social’s New Model for Indie Filmmakers

There’s a fine line between passion and desperation, “Bugonia” and “Eddington” producer Lars Knudsen told 35 filmmakers at Square Peg Social in Austin in late October. Desperation is driven by fear. Passion is driven by confidence. And throughout a filmmaker’s career, there will be people who try to capitalize on that desperation to get a film made.

I keep thinking about that distinction because desperation is often the low-octane fuel of independent film. Filmmakers need substantial money to support singular ideas that don’t correspond to mainstream concepts of what will sell. Being an indie filmmaker requires real nerve.

Desperation produces flop sweat. But under the right circumstances, that energy can be channeled as passion that moves the dream forward. Real-world stories give filmmakers the chance to lead from strength rather than need.

That reframing was central to Square Peg Social, the four-day gathering co-hosted by Knudsen, his Square Peg partner Ari Aster, and Amy Knudsen. By bringing 26 writer-directors and 9 producers together with 27 industry mentors, they created something filmmakers desperately need but rarely make space for: unguarded honesty about what it takes to sustain a filmmaking career.

Why It Matters (Even If You Weren’t There)

Only 35 filmmakers experienced this firsthand, but the conversations illuminate what the broader independent film community needs to reckon with: the terror of being bullied by agents, mistakes made under pressure, the “very bad experiences” even successful filmmakers endure. These aren’t aberrations. They’re common struggles being navigated in isolation when they shouldn’t be.

Independent film is in an incredibly challenging moment. As distribution models fracture and budgets contract, losing hope becomes not just understandable but almost practical. As assumptions that once structured the industry no longer hold, we have to try new ways to see what might work.

What made Square Peg Social notable was its rejection of conventional outcomes. There were no script developmentsessions, no pitch meetings, no financing goals. Instead, the event operated on a different theory: that bringing together excellent mentors and genuinely impressive filmmakers to share the unvarnished good and bad of their experiences would produce its own value.

Evidence suggests it did.

“When [Lars] invited me, he said something like, ‘You guys will get up there, some casting directors, the financiers, it’s a little bit loose, but at the end of the day, if nothing else will be a great opportunity to catch up with everybody,’” said Sara Murphy, producer of “One Battle After Another.”

“It was a very casual approach that ended up being warm and welcoming,” she said. “And more productive than any of the conferences I’ve been to. So yeah, I loved it. I was like, how do I get invited every year?”

Intentional Opacity

This summer, I announced the call for entries for Square Peg Social, with slim details: a gathering in Austin for filmmakers and mentors, hosted by Aster and Lars and Amy Knudsen. They would provide writer-directors and producers with mentors, programming, private dinners, and intimate gatherings designed to help them make movies.

Nearly 1800 applications arrived. In a sharp departure from similar programs, neither the selected filmmakers nor the invited mentors were announced. The application was vague, asking only for a body of work and a cover letter explaining what applicants hoped to gain.

Unconventional but intentional. The result was an event that felt unbuttoned but was crafted with the care usually reserved for state dinners.

“You didn’t have to listen to pitches, you didn’t have to team up with anybody,” Murphy said. “It was a meticulously curated guest list of people that were exciting to meet. Everybody I sat down with, filmmakers and fellow industry professionals, were everybody I wanted to talk to, which is rare at these things.”

A Room That Wouldn’t Stop Talking

I was the only journalist, and only attended the final day to ensure everyone felt comfortable; the rest was kept confidential. My first impression was Austin being Austin: The start pushed to 10am instead of 9am after a long Saturday night. But then the room started to fill and it became like a lively, coffee-powered party that toggled between intimate sit-downs and groups standing and talking.

And it never stopped.

Until 6pm, when everyone headed out for a final dinner, the conversations in the Soho House salon never let up. Even at lunch, everyone grabbed sandwiches and kept talking. By the end, Square Peg Social spoke with one voice: hoarse.

This wasn’t about developing screenplays, shooting scenes, or seeking financing. Pitching was specifically discouraged. While there were some panels and curated conversations, the real point was creating multiple opportunities for everyone to be honest about what sustaining a filmmaking career actually requires.

The Currency of Candor

“Many of [the filmmakers] mentioned that they appreciated our candor,” Aster wrote me the day after the event. “It was important to us that we not give calculated answers or pat advice, but that we be as unvarnished and unguarded as possible. Otherwise, what’s the point? Lars and I have also had a couple very bad experiences in this industry, especially in one distressing and endlessly prolonged instance, and I think it was useful to talk about what we learned there. There are certain things I won’t ever let happen again, and I wish someone would have warned me about those things before I went through the gauntlet.”

The willingness to discuss failure and missteps—not as cautionary tales, but as evidence of survival—ran throughout the event. Alex Orlovsky, who recently produced “Roofman” and executive produced “Sorry Baby,” identified this as “the beauty of what [Square Pegs] did. I think mistakes are the things that you can be like, ‘No, that happened to me and I’m still here.’ Just that messaging is really important for young filmmakers to hear.”

While many conversations covered familiar territory for emerging filmmakers—festival circuits, sales processes—Orlovsky valued discussing “mistakes that I’ve made that they should not make if they don’t have to. Or just, ‘Don’t get bullied by agents. It’s okay. They say they’re never going to talk to [you] again and that’s a lie.’ To speak from experience about things that, if you’re a young producer, can feel quite intense and terrifying.”

The specificity matters. Knowing that agent threats are performative, that certain mistakes are common and survivable, that even successful filmmakers have endured “distressing and endlessly prolonged” experiences—it’s all ballast against desperation.

A Deliberately Curated Community

The 27 mentors (full list below) also included Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight Pictures; WME partner Roger Green; and Harrison Huffman, executive producer of “Christy,” “Eddington,” and “The Iron Claw.”

The guest list emerged from friendships and network connections, but the filmmakers were “curated”—a word that came up repeatedly in conversations with mentors. This curation meant the exchanges could transcend simple mentorship into something more mutual.

“I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s going to happen. They’re going to do it,’” Orlovsky said of the participating filmmakers. “There are a couple that I’m even interested in figuring out if there’s ways for us to be involved. I think there’s almost too many people I want to stay in touch with.”

The Shared Condition

Tomorrow, I’ll share what the filmmakers themselves took away from Square Peg Social. But I want to close with Knudsen’s opening words to the group because they frame why building community around vulnerability rather than mere opportunity matters:

“What everyone here has in common is that “There was never anything else I wanted to do” — and we thought it could be empowering to bring like-minded filmmakers together and help create a sense of community around that statement — to share experiences and help each other.

“There was never anything else I wanted to do.” It’s both a blessing and a curse. It’s not accurate to say we do it because we love it. There are plenty of times where I hate being a producer. But since it’s all I know how to do I’ve had to find a way to take the good with the bad — and luckily for me, I’ve learned the most from the bad.

“I produced my first film over 20 years ago and as I prepared for this weekend I realized that there are so many things that I take for granted today that I would have benefited from knowing back then — for example, one thing that I have learned the hard way is that there is a fine line between being passionate and desperate. Desperation is driven by fear, passion is driven by confidence, confidence creates momentum and momentum makes films — so a big hope of mine is that you leave here with confidence in what is to come and let your passion drive you, not your desperation.

“Throughout our careers we are surrounded by people who — sometimes — will try to capitalize on our desperation to get a film made. We want to equip you with the tools to take those people on and allow you to be more firmly in the driver’s seat on the films that you direct or produce. Nothing is off limits.

“There was never anything else I wanted to do” describes not ambition but condition. It was the shared ground beneath every conversation at Square Peg Social — the reason why honest talk about fear, mistakes, and survival mattered more than networking strategies or pitch practice. When there’s no alternative path, the question isn’t whether to continue but how to continue well. That’s the conversation worth having, and the one this event made space for.”

“RHOA” Star Angela Oakley’s Husband, NBA Veteran Charles Oakley, Ordered To Pay $642K In Legal Fees To Madison Square Garden Following Viral 2017 Arena Ejection

#RHOA Star #AngelaOakley’s hubby will have to hand over a pretty penny to #MadisonSquareGarden (MSG).

Former NBA forward #CharlesOakley has been ordered to pay more than $642,000 in legal #MSG, stemming from the fallout of his ejection from a 2017 game. The fee award stems largely from a court determination that Charles failed to preserve five years’ worth of text messages, which were crucial to his civil suit accusing MSG and owner #JamesDolan of a$$ault, battery and defamation.

The incident in question occurred on February 8, 2017, when Charles was removed from his courtside seat at MSG during a game between the #NewYorkKnicks and the #LosAngelesClippers. He was seen arguing with arena security and was handcuffed and escorted out by several security guards. He was later charged with misdemeanor a$$ault and criminal trespassing.

Charles maintained that he “never said a word to Dolan” and was “minding his own business when…security asked why I was sitting so close to Dolan.” Charles’ legal team plans to appeal the ruling.

Staging company T3W make their mark in Trafalgar Square

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Staging and crewing company T3W were the stage suppliers of choice for a triad of major events which took place over the summer at London’s Trafalgar Square.

Chosen for their expertise, T3W provided staging solutions for McLaren Racing Live: London, run by Velocity Experience, and Pride in London and Canada Day, run by LS Events. Their structures supported a week of high-profile performances and public showcases in one the capital’s most iconic locations.

Run by brothers, Mark, Paul and Andrew Gibson, T3W prides itself on offering a personal, professional service and brings over 20 years of industry experience to every project. For these events the T3W team installed a covered 14-meter-wide performance space, which was tailored to the constraints of Trafalgar Square, along with two technical wings, two PA towers, two video wall structures and a wheelchair-accessible lift. Layer scaffolding formed the substructures and towers, and a T3W-owned custom fabrication formed the roof and decking system.

Julia Bruns, production manager, at LS Events said, “We commissioned T3W to build a Layher stage in Trafalgar Square and the team were brilliant to work with, both during the advance process and onsite, navigating the challenges of the site build space and surrounding heritage infrastructure. They were easy to work with, and their team were professional and respectful of the build environment.

“Paul and Mark were excellent at finding solutions for several build changes across three shows and co-operated with other suppliers. Their customer service was excellent, and we look forward to working with T3W again.”

Paul led the build with his team of eight skilled stage builders, who worked under tight time pressures due to the central London location to meet strict deadlines. Despite the challenges and weather conditions ranging from blistering 32°C heat to torrential rain and thunderstorms, the team successfully completed the build within the strict two-day window and dismantled the stage in one day.

Paul said: “It was an honour to be trusted to build on such a prestigious site for such large-scale events. The team rose to every challenge and went above and beyond to do our bit in making these events so successful.”

Given Trafalgar Square’s historic and architectural significance, including its designation as a listed site and proximity to the Grade I-listed Nelson’s Column, which the stage was built in front of, T3W implemented a series of protective measures. These included the use of Cap Track plastic matting beneath stillages during the build to safeguard the flagstones and using trusted operators to manage the heavy plant machinery including the 14-meter JCB telehandler, the 40-ton mobile crane supplied by Raymond Crane Hire Ltd, and the cherry picker.

McLaren Racing Live: London saw live appearances from key racing figures including racing drivers Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Mika Häkkinen, CEO of McLaren racing Zak Brown and Team Principal of McLaren’s Formula 1 team Andrea Stella. They joined the FormulaE car on the stage unveiling its new livery and showcasing the new papaya accents. J&C Joel branding company dressed the stage in papaya to reflect the new colour scheme and over 35,000 people attended the event. The stage itself went through three different rebrands throughout the week with red scrim for Canada day and rainbow colours for PRIDE.

Alongside the FormulaE car onstage Canada Day saw a diverse lineup of musical talent representing the Canadian music scene whilst London PRIDE showcased a powerful mix of legendary talent headlined by Chaka Khan and Durand Bernarr.

It was a successful week for T3W who alongside the Trafalgar Square build also supplied crew to a number of prestigious gigs and events including, Ed Sheeran at Ipswich’s Portman Road, Black Sabbath at Birmingham’s Villa Park, Oasis at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, ELO at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, Drake at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, Gracie Abrahams at Nottingham’s MotorPoint Arena and they supplied stage builders to Silverstone Race Course for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

Square Eyes Acquires ‘The Kartli Kingdom’ Ahead of IDFA World Premiere

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Vienna-based sales outlet Square Eyes has secured international rights to “The Kartli Kingdom,” directed by Tamar Kalandadze and Julien Pebrel. The film is set to world premiere in the International Competition at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), taking place Nov. 13-23.

“Kartli” refers both to Georgia’s medieval kingdom and a Tbilisi sanatorium sheltering refugees from the 1990s war in Abkhazia, meant as temporary but lasting 30 years. The collapsing building became a recreated “country”: a farm, garden, terraces, and rooms where old VHS tapes revive memories of Abkhazia, their lost paradise. Through Tamuna, Irma and others, the film reveals the exile’s trauma and shared resilience. Even if time seems frozen in Kartli’s walls, nothing stays the same.

“Our film narrates a community’s story through the shelter of Kartli: past, present and imagined future, lending gentleness, violence, sadness, memories, and humor,” Kalandadze and Pebrel commented. “These layers of time merge in editing, combining image and sound materials. Memories, words and tales of Kartli’s past shape its inhabitants’ lives, forming foundational myths. These stories, like an underground stream, resurface during conversations, interrupting scenes we filmed. Archival footage adds bursts of collective memory, showing the 1992 war’s impact on the community.”

“We love how the film gives us a glimpse inside the walls of the Kartli sanatorium, where the collective memory of the 1992 war in Abkhazia and the current lives of the residents mix into a touching and poetic documentary,” stated Wouter Jansen, CEO of Square Eyes. “The mix of these two narratives makes the film a perfect match for our catalog.”

“The Kartli Kingdom” is produced by Ketevan Kipiani for Giorgia’s Sakdoc Film and Jean-Baptiste Bonnet for Habilis Productions in France. Square Eyes is in charge of world sales.

Nas-Backed Casino Approved After Times Square Denies Jay-Z’s Proposal

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

A Nas-backed casino bid in Queens just got the green light to move ahead days after JAY-Z’s Times Square casino dreams were deferred.

On Thursday (Sept. 25), Aqueduct’s Resorts World received preliminary approval from a state siting board to move forward in the race for one of up to three casino licenses in New York. The move felt like a full-circle moment for Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who couldn’t resist throwing a little shade in Hov’s direction while hyping Nas’ ties to the project.

“There’s a theme in Queens and I know Nas is a part of it. Queens gets the money!” Richards said. Then, with a grin, he doubled down: “Sorry JAY-Z. We win again. I just had to rub it in.”

Nas, who has equity in Genting Resorts World’s $5 billion proposal, has been hands-on about the vision. The plan includes live table games like blackjack, craps, and poker, plus a concert hall and even a sports academy with Queens hoops legend Kenny “The Jet” Smith attached. On Thursday, Richards and five other members of the state’s community advisory committee unanimously voted in Resorts World’s favor.

The “One Mic” MC spoke of his new venture into the gambling world prior, and called it a win for his community. “This is an ambitious project that will give new opportunities to the hard-working families who call Queens home, attract top-tier talent, and build up the next generation of leaders. Clearly, with this project, the world is ours,” he said.

Meanwhile, JAY-Z’s Caesars Palace Times Square bid, with partners SL Green Realty and Caesars, didn’t survive the advisory stage. Every Manhattan casino proposal was struck down amid opposition from the Broadway League and neighborhood residents who made it clear that a new gambling hub in Times Square was likely not happening.

Next up, the statewide Gaming Facility Location Board will review the approved bids before the Gaming Commission makes its final decision. Up to three licenses will be awarded by the end of the year. Other contenders still in the mix include Bally’s in The Bronx, The Coney in Coney Island, and the Mets-Hard Rock partnership eyeing space near Citi Field.

But for now, Queens has bragging rights.

Jay-Z’s Times Square Casino Proposal Rejected By Advisory Committee

by jummy84 September 17, 2025
written by jummy84

Jay-Z, SL Green, and Caesars Entertainment’s bid to transform Times Square into the next major casino playground has been struck down. On Wednesday (Sept. 17), the state’s six-member community advisory committee denied the proposal with a 4-2 vote, per numerous sources.

Those four “nay” votes came from reps for Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, state Sen. Liz Krueger, Assemblyman Tony Simone, and Councilman Erik Bottcher, while the governor and mayor’s appointees stood in support with a “yay.”

Following the decision, SL Green CEO Marc Holliday reportedly blasted the naysayers, saying, “Go run and hide. You have to live with that history forever.”

The Broadway League and the No Times Square Casino Coalition have argued that plopping a gaming hub in the middle of Manhattan’s theater district would destroy the magic that draws millions to Broadway every year. Richard Gottfried, former Manhattan assemblyman, stated, “Most residents of the area we heard from are opposed. The Broadway theater industry is adamantly opposed, and they make a strong case that a casino in this area would do major damage to that gem. There’s lots of other places in the city where a casino could thrive.”

Rev. Al Sharpton, who supported the plan, called the decision a missed opportunity. “I was here for Jay-Z,” Sharpton told The Post. “We haven’t seen Black ownership in the entertainment industry in Times Square. I was disappointed that they didn’t break the color line.”

Meanwhile, Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, celebrated the “safeguarding” of the culture and community. “A vote to protect the magic of Broadway for the one hundred thousand New Yorkers who depend on it for their livelihoods, and for the tens of millions who come from around the world to experience it,” he said. “A casino can go anywhere, but Broadway only lives here.”

While Manhattan has denied a new casino, Queens still has a chance to secure one of those licenses.

Hip-Hop icon Nas has teamed up with Resorts World New York City on a $5 billion expansion plan for Aqueduct Park. If approved, their casino would become one of the largest in the world, featuring a 350,000-square-foot floor, 3,000 units of workforce housing, and 50 acres of new park space.

Nas spoke of his new venture and called it a win for his community. “This is an ambitious project that will give new opportunities to the hard-working families who call Queens home, attract top-tier talent, and build up the next generation of leaders. Clearly, with this project, the world is ours,” he said.

Unlike Times Square, Queens’ community is backing the proposal. Community Board 10 chair Betty Braton praised Resorts World’s track record. “They have been with us in good times and tough times ever since, giving both financial support and their time to this community,” she stated. “I know this partnership will only continue.”

With only three licenses on the table, the stakes are higher than ever.

Jay-Z Defends Times Square Casino Bid As Cultural Investment + Says It’s About ‘Strengthening’ Broadway & Creating ‘Real Value’ Within The Community

Jay-Z is doubling down on his love for New York City by investing in what he calls a “world class destination” in the heart of Times Square. He shared his vision in a new interview with City & State New York.

Through Roc Nation, Jay-Z has partnered with SL Green and Caesars to propose a casino at 1515 Broadway.

“New York City is the entertainment capital of the world,” he said. “Caesars Palace Times Square is an extension of culture.”

He believes the project will support the community and Broadway.

“Casino visitors will buy tickets, fill seats, book dinners before shows, and keep hotels full,” he explained. “This project isn’t about taking away from Broadway – it’s about strengthening it.”

Addressing critics, he emphasized responsible gaming programs and investments in arts and public resources.

“Our goal is to create opportunity and ensure this project delivers real value,” he added.

When asked what he loves most about NYC, he said, “The attitude, the culture, the energy. You can’t replicate New York anywhere else.”

Do you think the casino project is a good idea?
